- City Of Hollywood Launches New Accela Permitting Software System
City Of Hollywood Launches New Accela Permitting Software System July 25, 2024 Share In a bid to streamline and modernize its permitting processes, the City of Hollywood is set to unveil its new Accela Permitting Software System this August. Aimed at simplifying the often complex and time-consuming task of applying for Permits and tracking their progress, the Accela Platform promises to revolutionize how residents and contractors interact with the city government. The Accela System represents a significant upgrade over the city’s existing online services, offering a user-friendly interface and a range of new functionalities tailored to meet the needs of both individual residents and contractors alike. Scheduled for release in mid-August with Version 1.0, the system will initially cover a select number of Permit Types including: Demolition, Fence Installation, Window and Door Replacements, Plumbing, Driveway Construction, Electrical Work, Mechanical Installations, and Reroofing Projects. Accela is designed to guide and assist the building and development community. This platform marks a milestone in the City's efforts to enhance transparency, efficiency, and customer service in our permitting processes." One of the key features of Accela is its ability to provide real-time updates on the status of Permit Applications, allowing users to track progress and receive notifications directly through the platform. This transparency aims to reduce the frustration often associated with waiting for approvals and ensure that projects move forward smoothly. To access Accela, users will need to create an account on the platform, which will serve as a centralized hub for managing all Permit-Related Activities. While the Accela Portal undergoes its initial rollout, the city’s existing online ePermit and Express Same Day Permitting Services will remain operational, catering specifically to more complex building projects that may require additional support. Looking ahead, the City of Hollywood plans to expand the capabilities of the Accela Platform with the introduction of Version 2.0 slated for 2025. This future update aims to incorporate more Permit Types and further refine the user experience based on feedback gathered during the initial deployment phase. Community Engagement In preparation for the launch, the City of Hollywood will educate residents, contractors, and developers about the benefits and functionalities of the new Accela system. Residents interested in learning more about Accela or beginning the Registration Process are encouraged to visit the dedicated Permit webpage on the City of Hollywood’s official website at: www.hollywoodfl.org . - Reducing Caregiver Stress: Advice For Family Caregivers from The Alzheimer’s Foundation
Reducing Caregiver Stress: Advice For Family Caregivers from The Alzheimer’s Foundation April 7, 2023 Share Stress doesn’t just affect your mood—it can have long-term health impacts as well if you don’t take steps to manage it constructively. For individuals who face the stressful task of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s Disease or another Dementia-related illness, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is providing six steps to reduce caregiver stress as part of National Stress Awareness Month (April). “Finding ways to manage and reduce stress is of paramount importance for every Alzheimer’s caregiver—untreated stress over a prolonged period of time can lead to caregiver burnout and a host of other health issues,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Caregivers need to take care of themselves so they can provide the best possible care for their loved ones. National Stress Awareness Month is a great time for caregivers to be proactive about managing and reducing their stress and make an investment in self-care that will benefit them and their loved for whom they are caring.” Here are six steps caregivers can take to manage and reduce stress. • Be adaptable and positive. Your attitude influences stress levels for both you and the person you’re caring for. If you can “go with the flow,” and avoid fighting the current, that will help you both stay relaxed—conversely, becoming aggravated or agitated will increase the chances that your person will as well. Focus on how to adjust to the situation in a constructive way. • Deal with what you can control. Some things are totally out of your control. What is in your power to control is how you respond and react to these outside factors. Concentrating on finding solutions can help make the problem itself a little less stressful. • Set realistic goals and go slow. Everything cannot be resolved at once, nor does it need to be. Don’t hold yourself to unrealistic expectations. Prioritize, set practical goals, do your best to achieve them, and take things one day at a time. • Mind your health. Inadequate rest, poor diet, and lack of exercise can all exacerbate stress (and cause other health problems as well). As best you can, make it a priority to get sleep, eat right, drink plenty of water and find ways to be active. You cannot provide quality care to a loved one if you don’t take care of yourself. • Clear and refresh your mind. Exercise, yoga, meditating, listening to music or even taking a few deep breaths can all help relax the mind and reduce stress. Find something that works for you and do it regularly! • Share your feelings. Disconnecting from your support structure and staying bottled-up increases stress. Whether it’s with a loved one, trusted friend or a professional, don’t be reluctant to talk about your stress, because that can actually help relieve it! The AFA Helpline is available seven days a week to help provide information and support regarding caregiver stress and other caregiving questions. Connect with a licensed social worker by calling: (866) 232-8484. Web chatting at: www.alzfdn.org Or sending a text message to: (646) 586-5283. The web chat and text message features can serve individuals in more than 90 languages. < Previous News Next News >

- Finding Forever Homes: Rio And Royette’s Search For Love | sun-times
Finding Forever Homes: Rio And Royette’s Search For Love South Florida Sun Times Mar 13, 2025 Adoption is often a joyous occasion—the culmination of hope, patience and a fresh start for a furry friend in need. However, not all pets get the immediate attention they deserve. Some face obstacles that make it harder for them to find the right family. Two such pets, Rio and Royette, are currently at the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC), waiting for their forever homes. These loving animals have unique stories that deserve to be shared and with your help, their lives could be transformed. Rio: A Sweet Senior Seeking Cuddles Rio is a 7-year-old cat with a heart full of love and a calm demeanor. Despite his age and a condition that may scare some away, Rio has a lot of life left to live, but he’s been waiting far too long for someone to give him a chance. He’s been at the shelter since December, and as each day passes, it seems like potential adopters simply overlook him. Rio’s biggest challenge? His FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) status. While an FIV-positive diagnosis may sound alarming, it does not mean he will live a short life. FIV is primarily spread through bites from an infected cat, so Rio's immune system is a little more vulnerable than other cats, making him more susceptible to illness. However, with the right care, an FIV-positive cat can live a normal, healthy life, especially if precautions are taken. At the Humane Society of Broward County, the staff ensures that Rio’s condition is well-managed. Protective gloves are worn when handling him to prevent any risk of exposure to other shelter animals, and Rio enjoys a quiet life where he’s well cared for. His gentle, loving nature makes him the perfect companion for anyone willing to give him a home. Whether curled up on a couch or simply sitting nearby, Rio just wants to be loved and cherished. Unfortunately, Rio’s FIV status has made finding him an adopter more difficult. People may see the diagnosis and walk away without considering the possibility of providing a caring home for this sweet senior cat. But Rio is more than his medical condition. He is a quiet, affectionate cat who will thrive in a home where he can feel safe and loved. Rio’s future is bright, but only if someone is willing to take that first step and offer him a chance. What makes Rio’s situation even more heartwarming is that thanks to the kindness of Benny’s Buddies, Rio’s adoption fee has been fully paid. This means that there is no financial barrier standing in the way of bringing this sweet cat into your home. He simply needs a loving family to care for him in the years to come. Royette: A Joyful Soul Ready for Her Forever Home Royette is a 3-year-old dog with a zest for life that’s hard to ignore. She arrived at the Humane Society of Broward County after being transferred from a shelter where adoption traffic was low. Royette’s new environment has allowed her to shine. Staff members describe her as incredibly sweet, playful, and affectionate, especially when it comes to toys. If you’re looking for a dog who will entertain you with her playful spirit, Royette might just be the perfect fit. While Royette’s personality is the epitome of joy, she hasn’t had an easy start. When she first arrived at HSBC, she tested positive for heartworm, a potentially life-threatening condition if left untreated. However, thanks to the shelter’s commitment to animal care, Royette received the necessary treatment to cure her of heartworm. Now, she’s ready for her new chapter. Heartworm treatment is a significant undertaking, and it’s a testament to the shelter’s dedication that Royette is now healthy and full of life. She loves sunbathing, playing with toys, and, of course, receiving attention and affection from anyone she meets. Royette also appears to get along with other dogs, so if you already have a canine companion at home, a meet-and-greet at the shelter could be arranged to see if they’ll hit it off. Like Rio, Royette’s adoption has been made possible thanks to the generosity of a kind donor. Dolly’s Dream, a program dedicated to helping dogs like Royette, has kindly covered her adoption fee and provided a starter pack of goodies to help her settle into her new home. This means that Royette’s potential family can focus on giving her the love she deserves without worrying about the cost of adoption. The Importance of Adoption and the Shelter’s Role Rio and Royette’s stories are just two examples of the many animals waiting for their forever homes at the Humane Society of Broward County. The shelter plays a crucial role in helping vulnerable animals find their families. Whether it’s providing medical care, socialization, or a safe haven from the uncertainty of the outside world, the Humane Society is dedicated to giving animals the chance at a better life. But they can’t do it alone. Without the community’s support, many animals like Rio and Royette would struggle to find homes. Adopting a pet is not just about giving an animal a home. It’s about changing a life. Pets like Rio and Royette have so much love to offer, and they just need someone who will give them that love in return. By adopting from a shelter, you’re not just adding a pet to your family; you’re giving an animal a second chance. Could You Be Rio or Royette’s Forever Family? If you’re considering adopting a pet, Rio and Royette are waiting for you. Rio’s calm and affectionate nature makes him an ideal companion for anyone looking for a sweet cat to curl up with. Royette, with her playful spirit and joyful heart, would make a wonderful addition to a family who enjoys outdoor adventures and sunny days. To meet Rio, Royette, or any other adoptable pet, you can visit the Humane Society of Broward County at 2070 Griffin Road in Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312. The shelter opens its adoption kennels daily at 11:00 a.m., so you can stop by and learn more about the animals available for adoption. If you’re interested, you can complete a pre-adoption application at: www.humanebroward.com - Or call the shelter at: (954) 989-3977. Extension#: 6 for more information. Remember, adoption is an act of love. Could you be the one to offer Rio or Royette the forever home they deserve? Their hearts are ready to open to you. Are you ready to open your heart to them? - Fill Your Child's Summer With Adventure: Camp Can Be The Most Special Time Of A Child's Year
Fill Your Child's Summer With Adventure: Camp Can Be The Most Special Time Of A Child's Year By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil June 21, 2024 Share With the school year coming to a close, many children are now looking forward to going to camp, while some parents are on the fence. They’re not sure if there’s enough value in camp to justify their investment. Afterall, to run a proper camp is not cheap. Especially with the new inflation on everything, think of what it costs just for eggs! Besides, for some children, they’ve gotten used to and are actually happy to hide behind a mask. In addition to basic social reasons, here’s some food for thought for those parents that may be on the fence. Camp is the most special time of a child's year. In a way, it’s the most educational part of their year. Unlike school, where kids are in learning mode and not always excited to go school, camp is fun, full of exciting activities and always looked forward to by all kids! They're in a great mood and ready to soak things in! Many kids who have a difficult time memorizing what they learn in school, have a much easier time memorizing camp songs and every silly skit & shtick they see in camp. They remember it with every hand movement, detail & nuance. The same kid who's failing school is excelling in camp! For this reason, The Rebbe established the first Camp Gan Israel in N.Y. 68 years ago, with the goal to capture the best of the child's year and infuse it with good character traits and a noninvasive education that kids look forward to. Gan means a garden - a pleasurable place to spend time and where things grow. Israel, in addition to being the name of all Jews, is also the name of the founder of Chassidim, the great Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov. Thus, Camp Gan Israel (CGI or Gan Izzy as it’s lovingly known) is a garden where kids grow in every way, from learning how to be a mensch to the proper way for a Jew to tie his shoes. Between overnight camps and day camps, today there are over 500 Camp Gan Israels, with close to a quarter of a million campers attending this summer! For our local Camp Gan Israel in Highland Lakes, activities include: Swimming, Cooking, Sports, Arts & Crafts, Boating, Survival, Crazy Science, Kabala 101, Team Building, Field Trips & Tons of Fun! When Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov was a child of five years old, his father said to him: "My son, have no fear from anyone, except G‑d. Love every Yid, whoever he may be and however he may be, with all the fire of your soul!" These two things -The Rebbe taught - fear of G‑d and love of our fellow man, accompanied the Baal Shem Tov throughout his life and was the guiding force to his holy work. And it's these 2 things that are infused in every child that attends a Camp Gan Israel. We, therefore, focus many activities on getting rid of children's fears. From Swimming Lessons with professional instructors to encouraging kids to play a sport that they're not yet good at. From Animal Therapy to exploring new kinds of art, children are fully immersed in exploring new experiences. And when kids learn to let go of fears together with other kids, there's a magical bond that develops between them! A bond that is sure to last a lifetime! Kiddie Camp is for Preschoolers aged 18 months through 4 years old, while the Regular Camp is for boys and girls ages 5 to 12. You can find a Camp Gan Israel in just about every county in Florida, with 2 dozen chapters right here in South Florida alone! To learn more about camp go to: www.ChabadChayil.org/camp. Take Part In The Hollywood Beach Candy Cane Parade - This year's theme will be: "Your Favorite Children's Christmas Movie (PG Rating) November 21, 2024 Share Welcome to the 68th Annual Hollywood Beach Candy Cane Parade. Registration is now OPEN to include your holiday float in the 68th Annual Hollywood Beach Candy Cane Parade! Don’t miss your chance to be a part of one of the country’s longest-running holiday parades, rolling down the beautiful Hollywood Beach Broadwalk on Saturday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m. Space is limited! What began as a creative initiative back in the mid-1950’s by a group of enterprising Hollywood merchants has blossomed into one of the longest-standing holiday parades in the nation. The inaugural parade was conceived as a clever strategy to entice patrons to peruse the local shops and businesses. Over the decades, this simple yet ingenious idea has grown into a beloved tradition, captivating audiences with its array of brilliantly illuminated floats and vehicles. Today it features dozens of lighted floats and vehicles along the parade route entertaining the thousands of spectators who line the Broadwalk. The parade begins at 7:00 p.m. on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk at Missouri Street and heads south to Harrison Street. Guests are also encouraged to bring a lawn chair for top-notch viewing of the parade floats, marching bands and creative displays from civic, non-profit and children’s groups, or reserve a table at one of the many seaside restaurants. The parade’s emcee will be stationed at the Hollywood Beach Theatre at Johnson Street. This year's theme is "Your Favorite Children's Christmas Movie!" Parade participants are being asked to “Help Keep Hollywood Beautiful” by handing out candy to parade goers, rather than throwing it from floats. This will help reduce waste on the Broadwalk and sandy beach. Parade goers can also pitch in by bringing reusable water bottles. Due to the high demand for parking on the barrier island, beginning at 5:00 p.m., parade goers are encouraged to park in one of the Downtown Parking Garages and take the free patron shuttle to the beach. The Downtown Parking Garages are located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Shuttles will circulate non-stop throughout the evening with the last shuttle leaving the beach at 10:00 p.m. Downtown Parking Rates apply. Hollywood’s signature holiday event, the Candy Cane Parade is presented in partnership with the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts.
