He has discovered the ‘lost treasures’ of Jewish comedy and music, the songs and comedy routines that entertained hundreds of thousands of people from the Catskills to Miami Beach, from Carnegie Hall to Yiddish Vaudeville. He comes to the stage armed with books, songs, dances and jokes...” His extensive resume includes his groundbreaking productions of “Songs of Paradise” with the famous Broadway Impresario, Joe Papp and the New York productions of “The Golden Land” and “The Rise of David Levinsky.” From New York to Los Angeles, from the stage to the big screen, Hoffman has received numerous awards and great acclaim from critics and audiences alike. - What Property Tax Reform Could Mean For The Community | sun-times
What Property Tax Reform Could Mean For The Community By City of Hollywood Feb 25, 2026 Proposals under discussion in Tallahassee could significantly change Florida’s Property Tax System. If approved by the Legislature and placed on the ballot, voters may ultimately decide whether to reduce or eliminate certain Property Taxes. So what would that mean at the local level? Property taxes are one of the primary sources of funding for municipal services across Florida. In the City of Hollywood, Property Tax Revenue helps fund essential, day-to-day operations such as Police and Fire Rescue Services, Emergency Response and the Maintenance and Improvement of Parks, Roadways, Stormwater Systems, and other critical Infrastructure that residents rely on each day. In the current fiscal year, approximately 46% of the City of Hollywood’s General Fund Revenue comes from Property Taxes. Public safety represents the largest share of the City’s operating budget. Roughly two-thirds of the general fund is dedicated to public safety services. These services rely heavily on Property Tax Revenue to maintain staffing, equipment, vehicles and training. Florida voters previously approved the Save Our Homes amendment, which caps annual increases in assessed value for homesteaded properties at 3 percent or the Consumer Price Index, whichever is lower. This provision has helped limit rapid increases in taxable value for full-time homeowners. If Property Taxes were substantially reduced or eliminated, the revenue that currently supports municipal services would need to be replaced, or service levels would need to be adjusted accordingly. Possible alternatives could include higher sales or other taxes that are directed to state or federal budgets — not governed by your City. Property Tax Reform could also result in new or increased local fees, as well as reductions to programs and services residents have come to expect. As discussions move forward at the state level, residents are encouraged to stay informed and review official ballot language if amendments are placed before voters. Understanding how cities such as Hollywood are funded provides important context when evaluating potential changes to Florida’s tax structure. - Seeing The Possibilities - Living With Low Vision | sun-times
Seeing The Possibilities - Living With Low Vision By Family Features Feb 25, 2026 Millions Of Americans Are Living Low Vision, A Visual Impairment That Can Turn Everyday Moments - Recognizing A Friend's Face Across The Street, Reading A Recipe Or Checking A Text Message - Into Unexpected Challenges. Low vision isn't a natural part of getting older, though the conditions that cause it do become more common with age. Whether low vision is affecting you or a loved one, Low Vision Awareness Month is a perfect time to have your eyes examined for signs of eye diseases and to take steps to make daily life easier if you are experiencing low vision. Consider this information from the National Eye Institute to make the most of your vision and improve your quality of life. Understanding low vision You may have low vision if you can't see well enough to read, drive, recognize faces, distinguish colors or see screens clearly. Many different eye conditions can cause low vision, but the most common causes are age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, a condition that can cause vision loss in people with diabetes. The most common types of low vision are: • Central vision loss (not being able to see things in the center of your vision) • Peripheral vision loss (not being able to see things out of the corners of your eyes) • Night blindness (not being able to see in low light) • Blurry or hazy vision Diagnosing low vision Your doctor can check for low vision as part of a simple, painless comprehensive dilated eye exam. He or she will ask you to read letters that are up close and far away and will check whether you can see things in the center and at the edges of your vision. Then eye drops are used to widen your pupils and check for other eye problems - including conditions that could cause low vision. Low vision is usually permanent, but glasses, medicine or surgery may help with daily activities or slow progression. Living with low vision If you have low vision, you aren't alone. There are steps you can take to make life easier. For minor vision loss, simple adjustments like using brighter lights, wearing anti-glare sunglasses and using magnifiers can help. Changing the settings on your phone and computer to increase contrast, make text larger or have the device read out loud may also help. If your vision loss is getting in the way of everyday activities, ask your eye doctor about vision rehabilitation. These services can give you skills and resources to help manage your daily life and keep your independence. Examples include: • Employment and job training • Environmental modifications, like improving lighting and contrast • Assistive devices and technologies, like magnifiers, filters and screen readers • Adaptive strategies for daily living and independent living skills training • Emotional support, like counseling or support groups • Transportation and household services Finding the right vision rehabilitation services and support may take time, but working closely with your eye doctor or care team is an important first step. Discuss your needs and goals for living with your visual impairment so they can help identify the best services for you. - Experience Expressive Works With A Dramatic Flair - SFSO Presents A Program Bursting With Bohemian Joy And Nordic Intensity | sun-times
Experience Expressive Works With A Dramatic Flair - SFSO Presents A Program Bursting With Bohemian Joy And Nordic Intensity South Florida Sun Times Feb 25, 2026 South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), Led By Award-Winning Music Director Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso, Presents A Program Bursting With Bohemian Joy And Nordic Intensity. Dvorak’s Beloved Symphony No. 8 Radiates Warmth While Sibelius’ Violin Concerto Featuring Special Guest Artist Siwoo Kim Stirs The Soul. Schubert’s Overture In D major (In The Italian Style), A Playful Wink To Rossini’s Famed Operas, Opens The Program On Tuesday, March 10th, 2026 at New World Center In Miami Beach, Located At 500 17th Street, Miami, Florida 33139 And On Wednesday, March 11th, 2026 At The Parker In Fort Lauderdale, Located At 707 Northeast 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304. Both Performances Begin At 7:30 p.m. Also On Tuesday, March 10th, 2026 At New World Center, Enjoy A Pre-Concert Chat 30 Minutes Before The Concert With Dr. Alan Mason, Professor Emeritus Of Music At Barry University For In-Depth Conversation And Insights About The Works And Composers. “Dvorak’s Eighth is like a love letter to his native Bohemia — you can hear that passion for his homeland burst through every note. It’s one of his most beloved symphonies, and it is as joyful to perform as it is to hear," says Maestra Alfonso. "Having Siwoo Kim, one of my favorite guest artists, return to perform Sibelius’ Violin Concerto provides a striking contrast. It’s breathtakingly demanding for the soloist, darkly romantic, and emotionally charged from start to finish. And it all begins with a delightful nod to Rossini with Schubert’s Overture in D major (In the Italian Style). It’s like visiting Prague, Finland, and Italy all in one night. I’m looking forward to the journey.” Radiant melodies and rustic charm define Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8, a heartfelt tribute to his Bohemian homeland. Composed at the height of his career and inspired by the countryside surrounding Prague, the symphony brims with birdsong-like themes, folk rhythms, and sweeping lyricism. Joyful and deeply expressive, Dvorak’s Eighthcaptures the spirit of Bohemia and the heartbeat of Prague. Haunting lyricism and virtuosic fireworks come to life in Jean Sibelius’ emotionally expressive Violin Concerto, the only concerto he composed in his lifetime. Written during a turbulent time in the composer’s life, the expressive brilliance of returning SFSO guest artist Siwoo Kim, will bring a passionate take on the demanding and dramatic work. Siwoo Kim is an “incisive” and “compelling” violinist (The New York Times) who “plays with stylistic sensitivity and generous tonal nuance” (The Chicago Tribune). Kim actively performs as soloist and chamber musician and he is the Founding Co-Artistic Director of VIVO Music Festival in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Since his Carnegie Hall concerto debut with the Juilliard Orchestra, he has gone on to perform as soloist with orchestras in four different continents including Tucson Symphony, Houston Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Seongnam Philharmonic, Johannesburg Philharmonic, and Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie. As chamber musician, he performs regularly at festivals. He is the principal violinist of Music From Copland House. An advocate of new music, Kim premiered and recorded Samuel Adler’s only violin concerto with Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt on Linn Records. Along with ECCO (East Coast Chamber Orchestra), Siwoo recently made the premiere recording of Michael Torke’s “Last,” a 12-movement work for solo violin and string orchestra. Hoping to gain an operatic commission from the Viennese theaters, Franz Schubert wrote two operatic overtures “in the Italian style” in 1817. His Overture in D major, composed of several tunes, and laden with Schubertian harmonic changes, is zesty, filled with operatic flair, and is pleasingly adorned with unmistakable charm. SFSO’s 28th Season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts, where the bold and the sublime intersect, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today’s most compelling and celebrated musical voices. SFSO’s upcoming finale performance on Wednesday, April 8th, 2026, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304 will burst with color and power evoking visions of sun-drenched skies in Mendelssohn’s “Italian” and the dark mysticism of Scotland in his Hebrides Overture “Fingal’s Cave.” This season’s illuminating musical journey ends with the graceful, yet high-spirited Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores including Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Back to the Future, featuring the iconic films screened live with audio and musical accompaniment, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. "It's my pleasure to continue to bring world music programming to the Florida Keys, and I am looking forward to this year’s event." Elias is known for his work with Cortadito and will perform with his other project, the Everglades Songbook Suite ensemble. Since its origins thirteen years ago, Cortadito has evolved into one of the torchbearers of a pop culture phenomenon that is two centuries strong. A traditional folk and acoustic band named the Miami New Times' Best of Miami "Best Latin Act" in 2009, the band focuses on performing one of the earliest styles of Cuban country music known as Son (pronounced sOwn), their sound can best be described as reminiscent of the famed Buena Vista Social Club. Last year, Cortadito released a full-length album titled The Guajiro Triangle which features guest performances by Nestor Torres and Aymee Nuviola, including a fourth single and video titled "Lo Que te Cuento es Poco." The vastly resplendent Everglades has inspired countless works of literature and art, including the musical project "Everglades Songbook Suite," which was created by Elias. A 2016 Artist in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) fellow, Jose wrote music for ESS after spending considerable time at Everglades National Park. The project, which stands as the creative and artistic statement of his experiences, first came to fruition on June 21, 2021 as a short film shot in the Everglades, co-produced with Live Arts Miami and AIRIE. In 2022, the project received the support of the Kennedy Center to produce a pop up concert event at the Long Pine Key Amphitheater inside the park, then later in Key West at the Studios of Key West. The performance included artists from around the world and served as a collaborative effort which featured different composers as well. Born Louis Lesly Marcelin, Sanba Zao is a master drummer and Haitian roots music legend. He was also a professor at L'Ecole National des Arts, Haiti’s national arts school, and has devoted his life to teaching and promoting the culture and music of Haiti. Marcelin ran an elementary school called the Bazilo Ecole Communautairei, which was one of the first to reopen after the 2010 earthquake that devastated his home country. Sanba Zao has also sings and tours with Lakou Mizik and performed with other Haitian groups such as Group Sa, Foula Jazz, and Djakata. Famato is a West African musical ensemble based in Gainesville, Florida that plays traditional music from Guinea, particularly from the Mandinka tribe. The group's name is a Sanso word that means "come and see," and is led by Aboubacar "Amo" Soumah, a master drummer from Guinea, West Africa. They play instruments such as the Djembe drum and the balafon combined with vocals. Anchoring the MoradaWay Arts & Cultural District, FBKC is the Upper Keys first microbrewery. They always have a great selection of favorite beers, as well as a rotating list of seasonal and barrel aged beers, on draft. There is plenty for everyone to enjoy here. Take a tour of the brewery, enjoy a flight of beers, check out the local artwork, play games, or just relax and listen to some world music. Located at Mile Marker 88, the Tasting Room is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Explore Curiosities Travel is about more than seeing new places. For many Americans, it's also a time to learn, explore new interests and slow down. Booking a cruise can encourage those behaviors. According to the survey, 61% of Americans are more likely to try new foods while traveling on a cruise, and nearly half (48%) said they've discovered a new interest or hobby during their cruise, including wildlife, food, history or culture. For example, cruise guests may be able to try local specialties, like fresh Alaskan seafood, reindeer sausage, birch syrup and Alaskan berries, while on board. Unstructured time is part of the appeal of cruises, with 28% of respondents sharing they read more during their trips. Focus on Nature Nature-focused destinations stand out because they offer experiences that feel rare and immersive, especially in places where wildlife and landscapes are central to the journey. More than 4 in 10 survey respondents said seeing wildlife in nature would be the most memorable family vacation experience, compared with about 12% who said meeting a character at a theme park would stand out most. Whether spotting whales, watching glaciers calve or seeing the Northern Lights stretch across the Alaskan sky, the landscape being part of the experience helps define the journey. To help guests witness the majestic animals found in Alaska, including whales, eagles, bears, moose, otters, seals, sea lions and more, Holland America Line carries a wildlife expert on board. Plus, a wildlife spotting guide points out native animals found along the cruise route and a map with the best places to see each species is included. "Guests tell us time and again how profoundly nature shapes the memories they carry home," said Robert Morgenstern, Senior Vice President of Alaska Operations at Holland America Line. "Wildlife sightings, time outdoors and shared moments linger long after the cruise ends, especially for families exploring Alaska together." Reimagine Family Time For families, travel often creates time for bonding that daily routines simply don't allow. More than half of the survey respondents said their best family memories occurred while traveling together, and more than 4 out of 5 (82%) said some of their strongest family bonding moments happened during a vacation or family trip. In addition to shared memories, more than 91% said travel had a positive impact on their mental and emotional well-being. As travelers look for relief from routine and overstimulation, finding experiences rooted in nature, exploration and shared moments can help create lasting memories and emotional connection. - JCS Matzah Mitzvah 2026 - This Passover, More Than 500 Seniors Are Counting On Us | sun-times
JCS Matzah Mitzvah 2026 - This Passover, More Than 500 Seniors Are Counting On Us South Florida Sun Times Feb 25, 2026 On Sunday, March 8th, 2026 At 9:00 a.m. Sharp, Hundreds Of Volunteers Will Gather With A Shared Purpose: To Ensure That More Than 500 Homebound Seniors And Holocaust Survivors Feel Remembered, Honored, And Cared For This Passover. The Annual JCS Matzah Mitzvah Returns In 2026 With Renewed Energy, Deeper Connection, And A Clear Message To The Community — Our Seniors Are Counting On You. Organized by Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS), this beloved initiative transforms the weeks before Passover into a hands-on experience of kindness. Volunteers don’t just pack food; they deliver dignity. They don’t simply assemble baskets; they carry stories, heritage, and human connection straight to the doorsteps of those who need it most. And this year, spots are filling quickly. A Morning That Matters The day begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. at two community locations: • North - Scheck Hillel Community School • South - Bet Shira Congregation From the moment volunteers arrive, the atmosphere is charged with purpose. Tables fill with Passover essentials — matzah, shelf-stable holiday foods, and thoughtfully selected personal hygiene items. Every box is assembled with care, knowing that for many recipients, this delivery is more than practical support — it is a lifeline to the community. Clients expect their deliveries between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., making punctuality essential. Delivery assignments are first come, first served. Arriving late may mean missing the opportunity to deliver. This is not a drop-in event. It is a coordinated mission. More Than a Basket Passover is a holiday rooted in memory, resilience, and freedom. For Holocaust Survivors in our community, those themes are deeply personal. A holiday basket is not simply a convenience; it is a reaffirmation that their lives and stories matter. Many recipients are over 80 or 90 years old. Some live alone. Others are physically unable to shop or prepare for the holiday without assistance. Through JCS Matzah Mitzvah, volunteers bridge the gap between isolation and inclusion. Each knock on the door carries warmth. Each smile exchanged reinforces that no one is forgotten. Participation requires commitment — and that’s part of what makes it meaningful. Volunteers will dedicate up to four hours to both packing and delivering Passover food and personal hygiene baskets. Packing only is not allowed; every participant completes the full experience. Delivery drivers should be prepared to travel 25+ miles if needed. Assignments depend on demand and geography, and flexibility ensures that every senior receives their package on time. All volunteers over age 18 must be registered in advance. Children under 18 no longer need to register, but must be accompanied by an adult for the entirety of the event. Registration closes on March 1st, 2026. There will be no walk-ins or guest changes after that date. All guests must present their registration ticket and photo ID at the door. Without these items, entry will be denied. These guidelines aren’t barriers — they’re safeguards that allow the operation to run smoothly and respectfully for the vulnerable clients who depend on it. The Vibe: Community, Caring, Connection Step into the packing room and you’ll feel it immediately. Multi-generational volunteers working side by side. Parents teaching children about giving back. Teens lifting boxes. Adults coordinating routes. Friends laughing as they tape packages shut. Then comes the delivery — often the most moving part of the morning. Volunteers are welcomed into living rooms adorned with family photos and memories of decades past. Conversations unfold about childhood Seders, immigration journeys, grandchildren, and hope. Sometimes the exchange lasts just a few minutes. Sometimes it lingers. But it always matters. This is what a community looks like in action. Matzah Mitzvah is a reflection of this mission — practical support delivered with compassion. Why Your Participation Matters The need is real. More than 500 seniors and Holocaust Survivors are expecting deliveries this year. Many rely on fixed incomes. Some have limited family nearby. All deserve to celebrate Passover with dignity. By showing up, you become part of something larger than yourself: • You preserve memory. • You strengthen community bonds. • You honor resilience. • You ensure that no elder feels forgotten. And in return, volunteers often say they receive far more than they give. Important Details at a Glance Matzah Mitzvah 2026 Sunday, March 8th, 2026 9:00 a.m. (arrive on time) • Registration closes: March 1st, 2026 • No walk-ins permitted. • Photo ID and confirmation ticket required for entry. • Ages 18+ must register. • Children must be accompanied by an adult. • Packing and delivery required. All deliveries are first come, first served. Arriving promptly ensures you will receive a delivery assignment. Ways to Get Involved Beyond Volunteering Not everyone can attend in person — but everyone can help. Financial contributions directly support the purchase of food, hygiene items, and logistical coordination required to reach hundreds of households in just one morning. There are moments in the year that define who we are as a community. JCS Matzah Mitzvah is one of them. It is not glamorous. It is not complicated. It is simply neighbors helping neighbors — honoring elders who helped build the very community we cherish today. Cars will fill with boxes. Doorbells will ring. And in homes across Miami-Dade County, seniors and Holocaust Survivors will feel the warmth of being remembered. Spots are filling quickly. Registration closes March 1st, 2026. Show up. Pack with purpose. Deliver with heart. Because this Passover, more than 500 seniors are counting on us.
