About My Hollywood Pride developed as the result of advocacy by The Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council on behalf of the voices, perspectives and presence of LGBTQ+ residents in the Greater Hollywood area to build a more diverse and inclusive community. The Council was founded in 2019 by Hollywood residents and continues to be a leading advocacy group, representing over 700 members. In 2022, members of the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council successfully produced the Inaugural My Hollywood Pride, which was held on January 22nd, 2022. The success of the event led to the incorporation of My Hollywood Pride, Inc. later that year to take over the role of producing this annual event. The Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council continues to be an important Sponsor of My Hollywood Pride. The 2022 Inaugural “My Hollywood Pride'' was a tremendous success and the 2023 “My Hollywood Pride” is expected to be even bigger and better. On Sunday, January 29th, 2023 we will be back on Hollywood Boulevard to greet you for the second edition of this now-annual tradition. And we have chosen the theme “Welcome Home!” to guide us. Over the last couple of years, Florida has been a leader in Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislations and as a result LGBTQ+ people, especially our youth, are the target of unfair and unequal treatment. LGBTQ+ people have long created their own chosen families in the face of adversity and marginalization. With that in mind, we are inviting you to join us as though we were welcoming you back to our home and remind everyone that we are stronger together. Our mission is to provide a space where everyone is welcome and where you can feel proud to be who you are. And it is in that space where we can laugh, dance and learn together. In 2023, we will continue to provide a place for kids, youth and families to come together and also be a place that invites everyone in to learn more about LGBTQ+ Art and Culture and where you can celebrate. My Hollywood Pride, Inc. is 501(c)3 Non-Profit as determined by the Internal Revenue Service and is governed by a Board Of Directors that oversees the Pride Committee, which develops programming and activities around the Annual My Hollywood Pride. - Is It A Lemon? Is It A Lime? Try...An Etrog
Is It A Lemon? Is It A Lime? Try...An Etrog October 3, 2024 Share Jewish Community To Celebrate Sukkot Holiday This Month - As the seasons change from summer to fall and families spend more time inside, the Jewish community of South Florida will celebrate the Annual Holiday of Sukkot by heading outdoors. Sukkot, also known as the holiday of booths, begins this year (5785/2024) at sundown on Wednesday, October 16th and concludes on the evening of Wednesday, October 23rd. As the seasons change from summer to fall and families spend more time inside, the Jewish community of South Florida will celebrate the Annual Holiday of Sukkot by heading outdoors. Sukkot, also known as the holiday of booths, begins this year (5785/2024) at sundown on Wednesday, October 16th and concludes on the evening of Wednesday, October 23rd. The two day holiday of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah immediately follows Sukkot, beginning the evening of Wednesday, October 23rd and ending on Friday, October 25th. During Sukkot, we remember G-d's kindness to us during our journey through the desert by dwelling in a Sukkah--a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches--for the duration of the Sukkot Festival. For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the Sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home. The temporary booths emphasize how the world and the Jewish people rely on G-d’s protection. Eating under the stars allows us to truly thank G-d and see the blessings that surround us. Sukkot is a wonderful way for us to continue celebrating and connecting with our Judaism after the High Holidays. Another unique holiday practice is the gathering of four different species. The taking of the Four Kinds: an Etrog (a rare citrus fruit, originally from Italy, but now also commonly grown in Morocco & Israel), a Lulav (palm frond), Hadassim (myrtles) and Aravot (willows), tied together with Lulav Leafs. On each day of the festival, except for Shabbat, we take the Four Kinds, recite a blessing over them, bring them together in our hands and wave them in all six directions. The Four Kinds represent the diverse types and personalities that make up our community, and whose intrinsic unity we emphasize on Sukkot. Chabad Houses and many synagogues throughout Florida will be available to help each family plan a Sukkah during the weeks leading up to the start of the holiday. They will also all be equipped with a Lulav & Etrog set for anyone to use, free of charge. Many Chabads will also have available Etrog and Lulav sets for you to order, as it is preferable to actually own your own set. They will be offering guidance and classes for all community members interested in learning more about the holiday. If you would like to learn how to bind together your own Lulav set, you can join me for a hands-on class on Sunday, October 13th, 10:00 a.m. at Chabad Chayil in the Highland Lakes section of Miami North (Aventura). The class will be free of charge and open to anyone who reserves at: www.ChabadChayil.org/Sukkah. Drawing from the gravity of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Sukkot gives us the chance to celebrate the sweetness of nature and to thank G-d for His protection. Sukkot touches all five senses: the sweet smell of the Etrog, the feel of the palm branch and twigs in your hand, the sights and sounds of the Sukkah around us and the taste of the festival’s feasts. Sukkot, referred to as the holiday of rejoicing, comes just five days after Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. The group of four plants, including the Etrog fruit, are replete with symbolic meaning, including the fall harvest and gathering season, and the unity of the Jewish people. We encourage you to contact your local Chabad or synagogue to celebrate the holiday. You’re of course welcome to join us at Chabad Chayil for a community meal in the Sukkah, Shabbat or any of the holiday nights. Reservations can be made via: (305) 770-1919. Or: www.ChabadChayil.org/High-Holidays. You can also use our Sukkah any time of day or night 24/8. We’ll leave the lights on for you, and keep a set of Lulav and Etrog for use any time during the day. To learn more about the holiday, or to order a Lulav & Etrog, visit: www.ChabadChayil.org/Sukkah. The Author Rabbi Kievman together with his wife are the ambassadors of The Rebbe to Highland Lakes, FL. They are the founders of Gan Chabad Preschool, your local CTeen & CKids chapters, CHAP - an afterschool program for Jewish children in Public Schools and direct Chabad Chayil. $5,000 Scholarship To Interested Students: DAR Marian Anderson Legacy Scholarship Is Accepting Applications January 15, 2025 Share Undergraduate and graduate students studying music can apply for the DAR Marian Anderson Legacy Scholarship through January 31st, 2025. Sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the scholarship provides a one-time $5,000 award to one student annually who is pursuing undergraduate or graduate study in music. Marian Anderson (1897-1993) was a groundbreaking African American contralto and an inspiration for civil rights. “This scholarship pays tribute to Marian Anderson’s life, and the Daughters of the American Revolution seeks to honor her legacy through today’s aspiring musicians. Her legacy lives on in others who aim for excellence in musical studies, are committed to their communities, and willing to stand up for what is right,” said Pamela Wright, DAR President General. Applicants should be accepted or currently enrolled in an accredited university or college in the United States and have a concentration in music in their course of study. Music performance, composition, theory, or education are all areas that students may be specialized in to qualify for the scholarship. They should have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent GPA on the scale used by the institution. Applications require references sent through the application system, so students need to request their references ahead of the January 31st application deadline. In honor of Ms. Anderson’s commitment to the community throughout her life and her willingness to share her incredible talent with the world, applicants are asked to write a personal statement describing their humanitarian or volunteer contributions on behalf of their community and/or country. To recognize the city Marian Anderson called home, preference will be given to students from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania metropolitan area, even if they are not pursuing music studies in the Philadelphia area. - Francine & Bella: The Life Of The Party & A Quiet Soul Waiting To Shine | sun-times
Francine & Bella: The Life Of The Party & A Quiet Soul Waiting To Shine South Florida Sun Times Apr 16, 2026 At the Humane Society Of Broward County, Every Animal Has A Story—Some Known, Others Left To The Imagination. Yet What Truly Matters Isn’t Where They’ve Been, But Where They’re Going. For Two Very Different Souls Waiting Patiently In Fort Lauderdale, That Future Could Begin With You. Francine: The Life of the Party If you’ve ever imagined life with a joyful, spirited companion who greets each day like it’s a celebration, Francine (ID 712606) might just be your perfect match. At four years old and 46 pounds, she’s the kind of dog who fills a room—not just with her playful energy, but with genuine warmth. Francine’s past is something of a mystery. She arrived at the shelter from another facility, leaving her history unwritten. But spend even a few minutes with her, and it becomes clear that whatever her beginnings, her heart is wide open. Her personality shines through in everything she does—from her enthusiastic greetings to her signature silly moments that never fail to make staff and visitors smile. And then there are her ears—endearingly expressive, they seem to have a personality all their own. Francine is, above all else, a dog who loves to live. Toys? She’ll take them all, thank you very much. Fetch? Yes, please. A long walk exploring new sights and smells? Even better. She’s the kind of companion who turns ordinary days into mini adventures, whether you’re strolling through the neighborhood or heading out for a weekend outing. But what makes Francine especially lovable is her balance. For all her playful enthusiasm, she also appreciates the quieter side of life. After a good play session, she’s more than happy to settle in for some well-earned cuddle time, leaning into you as if to say, “This is exactly where I belong.” A Smart Girl with a Bright Future Beyond her playful charm, Francine is impressively intelligent and eager to learn. She already has some great habits under her belt—she rides calmly in the car, takes treats gently, and responds well to guidance. On walks, she can be a bit strong at times, especially when something exciting catches her attention. But the important thing is that she listens and wants to improve. With a little patience and consistency, she’s likely to become an excellent walking companion. Like many enthusiastic dogs, Francine is also learning that hands aren’t chew toys when excitement takes over. The good news? She’s catching on quickly and is more than willing to redirect that energy toward one of her beloved toys. It’s a small reminder that she’s still growing—and that with the right guidance, she’ll continue to blossom into an even more wonderful companion. Social, Sweet, and Ready for a Family Francine is what you might call a social butterfly. She enjoys meeting people and thrives on interaction, making her a great fit for a household that can match her energy and affection. Because of her playful exuberance, a home with older children would be the best match, ensuring everyone can interact safely and happily. If you already have a dog at home, the shelter recommends a meet-and-greet to make sure personalities align. As for cats, her compatibility is currently unknown—something potential adopters may want to consider. Francine has also overcome a significant hurdle. When she first arrived, she tested positive for heartworm disease—a condition that requires careful treatment and recovery. Thanks to the dedicated veterinary team at the Humane Society, she has completed her treatment successfully. Now, she just needs a few weeks of relatively calm activity to ensure everything continues to heal properly. It’s a testament to her resilience—and to the care she’s received—that she’s now ready to begin the next chapter of her life. Bella: A Quiet Soul Waiting to Shine While Francine bursts into your life with enthusiasm, Bella (ID 716021) tells a very different story—one of quiet vulnerability and gentle hope. This tiny cat, weighing just 5.2 pounds, was abandoned in the shelter lobby. No explanation, no goodbye—just a small, shy creature left in an unfamiliar place. It’s the kind of beginning that could make any animal retreat inward, and Bella has done just that. She spends much of her time tucked beneath her blanket, finding comfort in the small space she can call her own. It’s not that she doesn’t want love—it’s that she needs time to feel safe enough to accept it. For potential adopters, this means patience is essential. Bella isn’t the kind of cat who will immediately greet you at the door or curl up in your lap on day one. Instead, she’s the kind who will slowly, quietly reveal her true self to someone willing to earn her trust. And when that trust comes, it’s often deeply rewarding. The Beauty of Patience Bella’s ideal home is a calm, quiet environment—one without too much noise or commotion. She would thrive with someone who understands that love doesn’t always arrive instantly, but grows over time through gentle care and consistency. A dedicated cat lover, someone who appreciates the subtle joys of feline companionship, would be the perfect match. With patience, Bella is likely to emerge from her shell, gradually replacing fear with curiosity, and eventually, affection. There’s something uniquely special about helping a shy animal come out of hiding. Each small step—a cautious glance, a tentative approach, the first time she accepts a gentle touch—becomes a milestone worth celebrating. Two Hearts, Two Journeys Francine and Bella couldn’t be more different on the surface. One is exuberant and adventurous, the other quiet and reserved. But at their core, they share the same need: a loving home where they can feel safe, valued, and understood. Francine is ready to fill your life with laughter, movement, and affection. Bella is waiting for someone to see beyond her shyness and give her the chance to bloom. Both are reminders that adoption isn’t just about choosing a pet—it’s about forming a connection, offering compassion, and becoming part of an animal’s story in the most meaningful way. How to Meet Them If either Francine or Bella has captured your heart, the next step is simple. Visit the Humane Society of Broward County website to complete a pre-adoption application. The shelter, located in Fort Lauderdale at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312 opens its adoption kennels daily at 11:00 a.m. Whether you’re drawn to Francine’s joyful energy or Bella’s quiet charm, one thing is certain: both are waiting for someone to say “yes.” And for them, that yes could mean everything. The adoption kennels open daily at 11:00 a.m. If you have any questions, please call: (954) 989-3977. Bella ID#: 716021 Francine ID#: A712606 Previous Next
- Let's Learn from COVID: Prepare For Future Pandemics Now
Let's Learn from COVID: Prepare For Future Pandemics Now By Candace DeMatteis, JD MPH April 21, 2022 Share One COVID-19 lesson is already clear: The time to invest in preparedness for the next pandemic is now. A major focus of our preparedness effort must be combating the foes we know -- namely drug-resistant superbugs. Without swift action to address this public health threat, I fear we'll be facing the next deadly pandemic sooner rather than later. Like COVID-19, antimicrobial resistance -- which occurs when strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens develop resistance to the medications used to treat them -- is a global crisis. The World Health Organization has named AMR a top global public health threat facing humanity. Each year, nearly 3 million Americans contract a drug-resistant infection. By conservative estimates, 35,000 of them die. Yet some experts believe the actual toll is much higher -- approaching 162,000 annual deaths in the United States. Antibiotics provide a safety net for infections caused by these superbugs -- and all types of injuries, illnesses, and medical interventions. Our ability to prevent and cure infections is foundational to our safety and health. But any time we use an antibiotic, the threat of resistance grows. That means we must use antibiotics only when needed -- and develop more of them. Without new antibiotics, the risk of dying from infection after routine medical procedures becomes dangerously higher. About 10% of people, including several of my family members, report having allergies to some first-line antibiotics. That makes the need for additional and better options even more important. For example, diabetes, also common in my family, raises risks of all sorts of infections -- foot, kidney, and bladder -- and the seriousness of them. We worry about running out of options for otherwise routine ear, bladder, or strep infections. So should you. People undergoing common dental care to dialysis to chemotherapy all face infection risks and need antibiotics to cure them. But protecting against widespread antimicrobial resistance won't be possible without government support. U.S. biotech firms have the know-how to develop new antibiotics, but the antibiotic market is broken. To prevent or slow resistance, new antibiotics are used rarely -- held in reserve for serious infections. As a result, many firms that have invested hundreds of millions and spent years pursuing novel antibiotics end up declaring bankruptcy because sales of their drug are too small. Policymakers are aware of this problem, but progress is slow and antibiotic development takes time. A bipartisan bill in Congress called the PASTEUR Act would fix these market barriers and encourage much-needed development. Under a "Netflix-like" subscription system, the federal government would pay participating research companies a flat fee in exchange for guaranteed access to a stream of new, innovative antibiotics and antifungals. We've seen the devastating costs of not being prepared. We're closing in on a million lives lost from Covid-19 and economic damages approaching $16 trillion for businesses and families across the nation. Our policymakers need to act now so we are better prepared for the next public health crisis. Making sure we can kill superbugs should be at the center of preparedness efforts.
