- 100 Years Of Gershwin - South Florida Symphony Orchestra Launches Its 2024-25 Season
100 Years Of Gershwin - South Florida Symphony Orchestra Launches Its 2024-25 Season October 18, 2024 Share South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by the Award-Winning Sebrina María Alfonso, will launch its riveting 2024-25 Icons & Rebels Masterworks Season with “100 Years of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue,” an anniversary tribute to one of popular culture’s most beloved masterpieces, featuring Acclaimed Pianist Benjamin Hochman, the orchestra premiere of Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges Suite and Elgar’s Symphony No. 1. The programs will take place on Wednesday, November 13th at 7:30 p.m. at The Parker, located at 707 Northeast 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304 and on Saturday, November 16th at 7:30 p.m. at New World Center, located at 500 17th Street, Miami Beach, Florida 33139. "Opening with Rhapsody in Blue, one of the most consequential works by an American composer ever, performed with Hochman’s sparkling virtuosity, is sure to energize audiences. Coupled with the premiere of Prokofiev’s whimsical and bold Love for Three Oranges Suite and Elgar’s majestic First Symphony, we are setting the tone for an unforgettable season," says Maestra Alfonso. "I’m especially thrilled that, for the first time, we will perform all five of our Masterworks concerts at Miami Beach’s spectacular New World Center as well as return to our beloved theaters, The Parker and Broward Center's Au-Rene Theater. The musicians and I are positively buzzing with excitement as we kick off our 27th Season and can't wait to greet new and familiar faces.” Celebrating 100 years of Rhapsody in Blue, George Gershwin shocked critics who did not know how to process the unconventional work when it debuted in 1924. Gershwin’s melding of American Jazz and Classical Music broke boundaries and shattered norms. Today, he is revered as one of the greatest American Composers of all time. Acclaimed Pianist Benjamin Hochman lends his talents to the masterpiece. In all roles, from orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber musician to conductor, Benjamin Hochman regards music as vital and essential. At 24, he debuted as a soloist with the Israel Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall conducted by Pinchas Zukerman. Orchestral appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago and Pittsburgh Symphonies, and Prague Philharmonia soon followed. A winner of Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Career Grant, Hochman has performed at venues and festivals across the globe, including the Philharmonie in Berlin, Vienna Konzerthaus, the Kennedy Center in Washington, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Germany’s Klavierfestival Ruhr, and Lucerne and Verbier Festivals in Switzerland. Despite a medical setback in 2015 affecting his left hand, he pursued a conductor’s role, studying with Alan Gilbert at Juilliard where he received the Bruno Walter Scholarship and the Charles Schiff Award. He created the Roosevelt Island Orchestra, consisting of some of New York’s finest orchestral and chamber musicians alongside promising young talent from top conservatories. In 2018, fully recovered, he returned to the piano. Hochman’s recent highlights include conducting the Szeged Philharmonic in Hungary and the Orlando Philharmonic in Florida. He also appeared as a piano soloist in Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Rheinische Staatsphilharmonie conducted by Benjamin Shwartz in Germany. His chamber music collaborations have taken him to Berlin, Budapest, Vancouver, Boston, Seattle, Dallas, Charlottesville, The Clark in Massachusetts, and Brown University. He curates the Kurtág Festival at Bard College in New York. His new classical album, Resonance, will be released by Avie Records on November 1st. Hochman adds, “I am excited to perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody with Maestra Alfonso and the talented musicians of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. It’s an iconic work by a great American genius of the 20th Century who bridged the gap between Classical Music, Popular Music and Jazz. Everyone knows this piece and for good reason. I love playing it and can’t wait to share it with you all.” Sergei Prokofiev, unorthodox and inventive, is known for his Neo-Classical, modernist approach. His The Love for Three Oranges Suite, taken from his comedic opera, is a whimsical musical jaunt about a cursed prince who is forced to journey to distant lands in search of three rather large oranges, each containing a princess. Will the affable prince break the curse and find his ‘main squeeze’ or run out of juice along the way? A symphony in A-flat major? Quite rare indeed. Sir Edward Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 stands out as a remarkable exception in this regard. As a violinist, Elgar understood the challenges of playing in A-flat, yet that’s what he boldly composed in his first symphony, which beautifully explores the universal human experiences of love and hope. Now in its 27th Season, SFSO invites audiences to a tantalizing season featuring upcoming works by Mozart, Strauss and Berlioz, plus a glorious Handel’s Messiah performance and an eagerly anticipated orchestra premiere of Bernstein’s satirical masterpiece Candide. The concerts will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Key West. From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. This season’s popular collaborations include performances of ARRIVAL From Sweden: The Music of ABBA and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, featuring the iconic film screened live with audio and musical accompaniment on Saturday, October 26th at Broward Center for the Performing Arts. - Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League
Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League By Stephen Cummings July 1, 2021 Share PAL has embraced the phrase that “Sports are a metaphor for life” The Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League has followed the lead of its national parent and will now be known as the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic/Activities League. Jonathan Carrillo, Program Director explains that the organization will not only focus on team sports but, to emphasize its newly formed Leadership Academy supervised by Robert Flagg, who is mentoring teens, molding them with values to become productive citizens and conducting interactive exchanges via Zoom with young adults, regarding civic responsibilities. Currently, Hallandale Beach PAL offers participation in basketball, baseball, football, cheerleading, soccer, track and field and girls’ volleyball, hosting 1,200 members. Athletes have earned several medals and won championships with the hallmark stressing the importance of good sportsmanship and teamwork with respect for the players and the coaches. PAL has embraced the phrase that “Sports are a metaphor for life” aiming to provide the youth for actual adult situations and developing, outstanding virtuous behavior. The nascent Hallandale Beach Leadership Academy commenced during the recent Pandemic, through a generous grant from the national PAL office and offers an alternative to non-organized athletic competitions. Coordinated by PAL employee, Robert Flagg, the program bears the name Civics-101, A Conversation over ice cream. There are no classrooms or textbooks, but rather, interactive exchanges between the boys, the girls and various role models, from within the community. Flagg is also credited with starting the anti-bullying program, it is aiming not only for our local schools, but hopefully, it is intended spreading throughout Broward County. Slogans such as “Imagine its you, Do Something” and “Don’t be apathetic, be empathetic,” to encourage our youth to be intolerable of such foolishness and not to watch, idly. Schools are encouraged to post signs that read NO BULLY ZONE throughout the buildings. Many students have adorned the beautiful NO BULLY ZONE T-shirts that have been seen throughout Hallandale Beach. Another notable activity through the Leadership Academy, is entitled PAL Girls Summit with the tagline “Play nice, as I could be your CEO one day.” This activity is strictly geared toward females, where women who are corporate leaders share their experiences with the aspiring young girls. The Hallandale Beach Police Athletic / Activities League sustains its programs through grants, fundraisers and donations from caring individuals. - Evil Walks Among Us: Child Trafficking Has Become Big Business In America
Evil Walks Among Us: Child Trafficking Has Become Big Business In America By John & Nisha Whitehead February 2, 2023 Share It takes a special kind of evil to prostitute and traffick a child for sex and yet this evil walks among us every minute of every day. Consider this: every two minutes, a child is bought and sold for sex. Hundreds of young girls and boys—some as young as 9 years old—are being bought and sold for sex, as many as 20 times per day. Adults purchase children for sex at least 2.5 million times a year in the United States alone. In Georgia alone, it is estimated that 7,200 men (half of them in their 30’s) seek to purchase sex with adolescent girls each month, averaging roughly 300 a day. On average, a child might be raped by 6,000 men during a five-year period. It is estimated that at least 100,000 to 500,000 children—girls and boys—are bought and sold for sex in the U.S. every year, with as many as 300,000 children in danger of being trafficked each year. Some of these children are forcefully abducted, others are runaways and still others are sold into the system by relatives and acquaintances. Child rape has become Big Business in America. This is not a problem found only in big cities. It’s happening everywhere, right under our noses, in suburbs, cities and towns across the nation. As Ernie Allen of the National Center For Missing And Exploited Children points out, “The only way not to find this in any American city is simply not to look for it.” Like so many of the evils in our midst, sex trafficking (and the sexualization of young people) is a cultural disease that is rooted in the American police state’s heart of darkness. It speaks to a sordid, far-reaching corruption that stretches from the highest seats of power (governmental and corporate) down to the most hidden corners and relies on our silence and our complicity to turn a blind eye to wrongdoing. It is estimated that the number of children who are at risk of being trafficked or have already been sold into the sex trade would fill 1,300 school buses. The internet has become the primary means of sexual predators targeting and selling young children for sex. “One in five kids online are sexually propositioned through gaming platforms and other social media and those, non-contact oriented forums of sexual exploitation are increasing,” said Researcher Brian Ulicny. It’s not just young girls who are vulnerable, either. According to a USA Today investigative report, “boys make up about 36% of children caught up in the U.S. Sex Industry (about 60% are female and less than 5% are transgender males and females).” Every year, the ages of the girls and boys being bought and sold get younger and younger. The average age of those being trafficked is 13. Yet as the head of a group that combats trafficking pointed out, “Let’s think about what average means. That means there are children younger than 13. That means 8, 9, 10-year-olds.” “They’re minors as young as 13 who are being trafficked,” noted a 25-year-old victim of trafficking. “They’re little girls.” This is America’s dirty little secret. But what or who is driving this evil appetite for young flesh? Who buys a child for sex? Otherwise ordinary men from all walks of life. “They could be your co-worker, doctor, pastor or spouse,” writes Journalist Tim Swarens, who spent more than a year investigating the sex trade in America. According to criminal investigator Marc Chadderdon, these “buyers”—the so-called “ordinary” men who drive the demand for sex with children—represent a cross-section of American society: every age, every race, every socio-economic background, cops, teachers, corrections workers, pastors, etc. America’s police forces—riddled with corruption, brutality, sexual misconduct and drug abuse—represent another facet of the problem: police have become both predators and pimps. As the Philadelphia Inquirer reports, “Hundreds of police officers across the country have turned from protectors to predators, using the power of their badge to extort sex.” Young girls are particularly vulnerable to these predators in blue. Former Police Officer Phil Stinson estimates that half of the victims of police sex crimes are minors under the age of eighteen. According to The Washington Post, a national study found that 40 percent of reported cases of police sexual misconduct involved teens. For example, in California, a police sergeant—a 16-year veteran of the police force—was arrested for raping a 16-year-old girl who was being held captive and sold for sex in a home in an upscale neighborhood. A Pennsylvania police chief and his friend were arrested for allegedly raping a young girl hundreds of times—orally, vaginally and anally several times a week—over the course of seven years, starting when she was 4 years old. Two NYPD cops were accused of arresting a teenager, handcuffing her and driving her in an unmarked van to a nearby parking lot, where they raped her and forced her to perform oral sex on them, then dropped her off on a nearby street corner. The New York Times reports that “a sheriff’s deputy in San Antonio was charged with sexually assaulting the 4-year-old daughter of an undocumented Guatemalan woman and threatening to have her deported if she reported the abuse.” And then you have national sporting events such as the Super Bowl, where sex traffickers have been caught selling minors, some as young as 9 years old. Whether or not the Super Bowl is a “windfall” for sex traffickers as some claim, it remains a lucrative source of income for the child sex trafficking industry and a draw for those who are willing to pay to rape young children. Finally, as I documented in an earlier column, the culture is grooming these young people to be preyed upon by sexual predators. Social media makes it all too easy. As one news center reported, “Finding girls is easy for pimps. They look on … social networks. They and their assistants cruise malls, high schools and middle schools. They pick them up at bus stops. On the trolley. Girl-to-girl recruitment sometimes happens.” Foster homes and youth shelters have also become prime targets for traffickers. Rarely do these children enter into prostitution voluntarily. Many start out as runaways or throwaways, only to be snatched up by pimps or larger sex rings. Others, persuaded to meet up with a stranger after interacting online through one of the many social networking sites, find themselves quickly initiated into their new lives as sex slaves. According to the National Center For Missing And Exploited Children, nearly 800,000 children go missing every year (roughly 2,185 children a day). For those trafficked, it’s a nightmare from beginning to end. Those being sold for sex have an average life expectancy of seven years and those years are a living nightmare of endless rape, forced drugging, humiliation, degradation, threats, disease, pregnancies, abortions, miscarriages, torture, pain and always the constant fear of being killed or, worse, having those you love hurt or killed. A common thread woven through most survivors’ experiences is being forced to go without sleep or food until they have met their sex quota of at least 40 men. As David McSwane recounts in a chilling piece for the Herald-Tribune: “In Oakland Park, an industrial Fort Lauderdale suburb, federal agents in 2011 encountered a brothel operated by a married couple. Inside ‘The Boom Boom Room,’ as it was known, customers paid a fee and were given a condom and a timer and left alone with one of the brothel’s eight teenagers, children as young as 13. A 16-year-old foster child testified that he acted as security, while a 17-year-old girl told a federal judge she was forced to have sex with as many as 20 men a night.” One particular sex trafficking ring catered specifically to migrant workers employed seasonally on farms throughout the southeastern states, especially the Carolinas and Georgia, although it’s a flourishing business in every state in the country. Traffickers transport the women from farm to farm, where migrant workers would line up outside shacks, as many as 30 at a time, to have sex with them before they were transported to yet another farm where the process would begin all over again. This growing evil is, for all intents and purposes, out in the open. Unfortunately, as I document in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the government’s war on sex trafficking, much like the government’s war on terrorism, drugs and crime, has become a perfect excuse for inflicting more police state tactics (police checkpoints, searches, surveillance, and heightened security) on a vulnerable public while doing little to actually protect our children from sex predators. That so many children continue to be victimized, brutalized and treated like human cargo is due to three things: one, a consumer demand that is increasingly lucrative for everyone involved—except the victims; two, a level of corruption so invasive on both a local and international scale that there is little hope of working through established channels for change; and three, an eerie silence from individuals who fail to speak out against such atrocities. - Laughs, Logic, And A Little Math: Comedy Night With Matthew Broussard At The Hub | sun-times
Laughs, Logic, And A Little Math: Comedy Night With Matthew Broussard At The Hub Jewish Connection News Jun 4, 2025 On The Evening Of Thursday, June 26th, Prepare To Trade Spreadsheets For Punchlines And Equations For Absurdities, As Comedy Night With Matthew Broussard* Brings Brainy Laughs To The Hub’s Frankel Family Performing Arts Center. Known For His Razor-Sharp Wit, Self-Deprecating Charm, And More Academic References Than Your Average Netflix Special, Broussard Is Not Your Typical Stand-Up Comedian—And That’s Exactly What Makes His Comedy So Magnetic. A former financial analyst turned nationally touring comedian, Matthew Broussard’s career detour reads like the setup to one of his jokes. The son of a Cajun chemist and a Jewish microbiologist, Broussard grew up fluent in sarcasm and science. He graduated with a degree in computational mathematics—a fact he manages to mention onstage more often than you’d expect (or want), and yet, you’ll be glad he did. His comedy is an unexpected fusion of the intellectual and the absurd. One moment he's explaining Greek mythology using pop culture analogies; the next, he’s poking fun at his own modeling headshots. Broussard's style is as likely to make you think as it is to make you laugh, offering a uniquely heady blend of logic and lunacy. He’s the only comic who might leave you Googling a math joke on the ride home—and laughing about it all the same. If you recognize Broussard’s chiseled jawline and boyish grin from your TV screen, it’s probably because you’ve seen him on The Tonight Show, Conan, Comedy Central’s The Half Hour, or verbally duking it out on Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle. He’s also appeared in hit shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Mindy Project, and The League. On the big screen, he shared scenes with Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish in Here Today. And in the digital space, he’s the creator of Monday Punday, a clever, pun-driven webcomic and puzzle app that’s basically what would happen if a dad joke got an arts degree. The Thursday, June 26th show takes place at The Hub, Pinecrest’s beloved cultural epicenter. Known for its multifaceted offerings, The Hub isn’t just a performing arts venue—it’s also home to an instructional pool, athletic facilities, a youth lounge, and even the cozy Top Nosh Café. Whether you're in it for community, culture, or comedy, The Hub offers it all under one roof. "Matthew Broussard is the perfect blend of smart and silly,” said a concert-goer. “He’s got this incredible way of making complex ideas feel funny and relatable. We’re so excited to have him in the area — it’s going to be a night people talk about for a long time.” The show kicks off at 7:30 p.m., with tickets priced at $28 for premium seating and $18 for standard seats. Refreshingly, there’s no drink minimum—so the only thing you’re obligated to consume is laughter. Light bites and beverages will be available for purchase beginning at 6:30 p.m. before the show. If you’ve ever wondered what it would look like if a mathlete joined the comedy circuit, this is your chance to find out. Broussard doesn’t just tell jokes—he deconstructs them, rebuilds them, and adds a graph. Whether you're a comedy connoisseur or someone who just likes a good pun, you’ll leave the show feeling a little smarter—and a lot more amused. So grab your tickets, grab a friend, and come experience the wonderfully weird, weirdly educational world of Matthew Broussard. Your brain might thank you. Your abs definitely will. - Surprise Powerz: Popular STEM Dolls Available At Macy’s Aventura
Surprise Powerz: Popular STEM Dolls Available At Macy’s Aventura March 10, 2023 Share Surprise Powerz, providers of educational talking STEM dolls that make it easy for girls to build confidence in critical subjects like math and science, today announced that their 16-inch dolls are available for sale at Macy’s Aventura in Florida at 19535 Biscayne Boulevard, Aventura, Florida 33180. March is a crucial month for women and girls - Women's History Month, Expanding Girls' Horizons in Science and Engineering Month and Tuesday, March 14th, 2023 being Science Education Day. Surprise Powerz dolls inspire young girls to build curiosity, creativity, critical thinking and confidence. A recent study found that by third grade, most children believe boys are more interested in computer science and engineering than girls. Furthermore, the study notes, "the more that individual girls endorse gender-interest stereotypes favoring boys in computer science and engineering, the lower their interest and sense of belonging in these fields." This results in young girls being systematically tracked away from Science, Tech, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in schools - limiting their future opportunities. Women make up only 28% of the STEM workforce. Surprise Powerz’ educational talking STEM dolls make it easy for girls to gain confidence in the critical subjects of math, science, and more. The dolls, created for toddlers and preschoolers ages two to five, encourage counting, STEM vocabulary, problem-solving, and healthy imaginative pretend to play. The dolls: Astro the Astronaut, Vera the Vet, Maria the Mathmagician, and Codie the Coder were conceived to spark curiosity and engage kids in the world of STEM while helping them reach developmental milestones. Each time the doll's hand is squeezed, she can deliver one of 75 phrases, singalongs, and sound effects - all of which encourage playing and learning. The toys also feature a diverse range of real girls' voices to reflect ethnicity and create an authentic experience - with Maria, the Mathmagician speaking both English and some Spanish. "This is a great time to celebrate the future breakthroughs that our toddler and preschool girls are capable of. It's also a great time to empower our young girls to know they can be anything they put their minds to, and one day they can change this world to be a better place,” said Surprise Powerz Founder Kristel Bell. “Like most women today, the girl toys available when I was a kid were for playing princess or mommy. As an adult, I was surprised that girls’ toys hadn’t changed much. Boys’ toys, in contrast, were already teaching critical skills in serious subjects like science, technology, engineering, and math. So it’s no surprise that many girls lose confidence in those subjects as early as nine." Noting this imbalance fueled Bell to create her line of toys to equip girls with critical skills like curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving. Bell founded Surprise Powerz because she believes in empowering girls and understands that girls need dolls that look and sound like them to instill confidence and facilitate STEM learning from an early age. “As a professor who focuses on early science, math, and engineering in the early childhood classroom, I can state without hesitation that the Surprise Powerz Stem Dolls are a wonderful addition to the STEM toys-for-kids market,” says Kathleen Sheridan, Ph.D. “The focus on empowering young girls to engage in science activities and careers is laudable.” The dolls are available at Macy’s Aventura and at: https://www.macys.com/ for $64.99. - Linda Eder: One Night Only: Performing To Sold Out Crowds Throughout The World & Coming To Aventura
Linda Eder: One Night Only: Performing To Sold Out Crowds Throughout The World & Coming To Aventura August 22, 2024 Share Showcasing one of the greatest voices of our time, Linda Eder’s diverse repertoire spans Broadway, Standards, Pop, Country, and Jazz. When she performs “live” in concert, it is amazing to experience the ease with which she moves back and forth from one genre to another as if she were gifted with the vocal ability to perform each genre as well as all the others. Born in Tucson, Arizona and raised in Brainerd, Minnesota, Eder began her career right out of high school singing all around her home state, and she eventually landed a gig at Harrah’s Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. But it was her appearance on the 1987 season of “Star Search,” during which she won for an unprecedented 12 straight weeks, which attracted the attention of audiences and record companies alike. Eder launched her recording career in 1991 with her self-titled debut album and soon established a vital niche as America’s most popular and acclaimed new interpreter of Pop, Standard and Theatrical genres. She released two more solo albums before starring in the Broadway production of JEKYLL & HYDE beginning on April 28th, 1997. As the tragic character “Lucy” in this new musical, Eder blew the roof off New York City’s Plymouth Theatre eight times a week as she belted out her signature songs “Someone Like You” and “A New Life.” Her Broadway debut, for which she was rewarded with a Drama Desk nomination, sent her already rapidly rising star blazing across the sky securing her a spot as one of America’s most beloved singers and dynamic “live” performers. Stephen Holden of The New York Times wrote, “What do we mean when we use the word perfection? The question arises every time I watch the pop singer Linda Eder.” After leaving Broadway, Eder’s recording career continued “full steam ahead” with her discography to date being composed of 18 solo recordings and numerous musical recordings. She focused on mostly Broadway, Standard and Pop music for many years, which highlighted her abundant vocal gifts as well as her skill for delivering dramatic, emotionally resonant interpretations of mostly familiar songs while making them her own. Her highly successful first Christmas album, CHRISTMAS STAYS THE SAME, is a perfect example of the way she is able to transform and interpret best loved Christmas music and make it her own without compromising the original. In 2008, Eder stepped outside the box and her familiar “wheelhouse” to record THE OTHER SIDE OF ME, a Country Pop blend of contemporary music, which included a song written by Linda herself. And, in June, 2010, she and Clay Aiken covered Roy Orbison’s “Crying” as a duet on Aiken’s album, TRIED & TRUE. In 2013, Linda established her own record company under the name Tressamail, Inc., and in that same year she released her first recording on that newly established label, the highly acclaimed CHRISTMAS WHERE YOU ARE. This CD features 12 tracks – six selected by her fans via social media and two originals from Eder herself. It also featured a unique twist on the classic, ”Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” which Linda rewrote and recorded with her teenage son, Jake. It was to represent a classic mother-son debate over going outside to play in a snowstorm. Eder has released two additional recordings on her own record label. In 2014, she released her first ever “live” CD, LINDALIVE, which was recorded in Saratoga, New York before a wildly enthusiastic crowd. In November, 2015, she released RETRO VOLUME 1. This recording features 14 tracks written by Frank Wildhorn, Jack Murphy, Jason Howland, Leslie Bricusse, Nan Knighton, Baird Jarman, and Maury Yeston. It is filled with the kind of lush, sweeping Broadway-esque melodies that first introduced Linda’s voice to her many fans. In 2018, Linda recorded her 17th solo album, a Broadway/Standards CD entitled IF YOU SEE ME, with music for the title track written by her son, Jake Wildhorn, and lyrics written by Linda herself. She has also put out her first “behind the scenes” DVD entitled THE OTHER SIDE compiled from personal moments at work and at home over a three year period and culminating with the making of her new CD (IF YOU SEE ME). She has appeared on television numerous times. TrailMIX, her prime time Animal Planet special about singers with a passion for horses, was a natural extension of her love for animals and featured Linda interviewing fellow recording artists and performers Sheryl Crow, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Irish Tenor Ronan Tynan, Rob Thomas, and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry. She has been featured on numerous PBS television concert specials including Clay Aiken’s Tried & True, Hallelujah Broadway, Linda Eder: The PBS Concert, Best of Broadway: Broadway The Leading Ladies, Best of Broadway: The Love Songs, Jim Brickman Plays The Disney Songbook, and more. Her 2001 Holiday Concert, Christmas Stays the Same, was broadcast on Bravo TV and continues to be a popular selling DVD. The concert stage remains the mainstay of Eder’s career. She has performed for sold-out crowds in venues across the country and throughout Europe. She has performed at many prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, The Palace Theatre, Radio City Music Hall, Wolftrap, New York City’s Town Hall, Davies Hall, among many others. Always touring in great company, her collaborators have included the late Oscar-Winning Composer and Pianist Marvin Hamlisch, Emmy and Grammy Winner Michael Feinstein, and Conductor of the Boston Pops Keith Lockhart. Eder is happiest on stage singing for her audiences and spreading the joy she exudes. Linda Eder will be in Aventura for one night only, Friday, January 17th, 2025 at 8:00 p.m., tickets start at $67. - The Final Masterworks Concert: South Florida Symphony Orchestra Celebrates Triumphant 25th Anniversary
The Final Masterworks Concert: South Florida Symphony Orchestra Celebrates Triumphant 25th Anniversary April 6, 2023 Share South Florida Symphony Orchestra will close out its triumphant 25th anniversary season with a grand finale concert featuring Rachmaninoff’s demanding Piano Concerto No. 3 performed by Svetlana Smolina; along with Bruckner’s choral masterpiece, Te Deum, featuring the South Florida Symphony Chorus and vocalists Elaine Alvarez, soprano; Rehanna Thelwell, mezzo-soprano; Neil Nelson, bass-baritone; and Arnold Rawls, tenor. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are on sale, now. "Our final Masterworks concert at The Parker is a thing of beauty and the perfect way to say farewell to our milestone 25th anniversary season,” said Maestra Alfonso. “We’ll be celebrating Sergei Rachmaninoff's 150th birthday with his virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 3 featuring Svetlana Smolina's gorgeous yet technically masterful playing and presenting Bruckner's great, large-scale choral work of praise and thanksgiving, Te Deum. It has been an absolute joy to lead this incredible orchestra for 25 years, and I am thankful for every opportunity we have to share our love of this art form with our audiences.” Born April 1, 1873, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is considered to be one of the most demanding and beautiful of all of the Russian composer’s piano concertos. The romantic, yet complicated piece, was originally intended as a spotlight soloist piece for Rachmaninoff’s friend Josef Hofmann, who eventually elected not to perform it. So complex is this piece, that the biographical film drama “Shine” detailed pianist David Helfgott’s quest to conquer the concerto resulting in his ultimate mental breakdown. Performing Piano Concerto No. 3 will be audience favorite and recurring South Florida Symphony soloist Svetlana Smolina. Smolina has performed with orchestras and in recitals, worldwide. Notable appearances include the Mariinsky Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, New York Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Odessa and Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, New Florida Philharmonic, Shreveport Symphony and New York Chamber Orchestra. A frequent guest at international festivals, Smolina has performed at the Salzburg Festival, Hollywood Bowl, Ravinia Rising Stars, White Nights, Maggio Musicale, Mikkeli, Ruhr, Easter, Rotterdam Phillips Gergiev, International Gilmore, Settimane Musicali di Stresa, Michelangeli, Hennessy Artists Series at Hanoi Opera House, The Voice of Music in Upper Galilee, Royal Covent Garden Opera, Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory, Mozarteum, Merkin Hall, Kravis Center, NJPAC, Gulbenkian Foundation, Grand Artists Series in Tel-Aviv and Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome. In addition to her touring engagements, Smolina is currently Piano Program Director for European Academy of Fine Arts/Piano Conservatory (a division of Irish American University) and Piano Program Director of the Philadelphia International Music Festival. Anton Bruckner’s Te Deum premiered in Vienna on May 2, 1885. The composer himself called the work "the pride of his life" and it stands as the composer’s most overtly joyful hymn of praise and thanks. The piece was performed more than 30 times in his lifetime with the first performance in the United States occurring at the Cincinnati May Festival on May 26, 1892 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati May Festival Chorus and soloists.
