“One City At A Time" Returns To Hollywood - Event Celebrated Impact, Brought Additional Health Resources And Services To Community South Florida Sun Times Apr 23, 2026 Memorial Healthcare System Recently Hosted A “One City At A Time” Event In Hollywood, Two Years After The Program Launched In The Community To Offer Uninsured Or Underinsured Residents Access To Health Resources And Services At No Charge In Locations Convenient To Them. Memorial’s adult and pediatric mobile health vehicles were on site at Boggs Park and Sports Fields to provide medical exams/screenings. More than 40 community partners offered services, lunch was served and healthy food packages were distributed to 150 families. The community event also included games, music and wellness activities for all ages. “We know not having easy access to care is one of the social determinants that impacts a person’s overall health,” said Dionne Blackwood, vice president of Memorial Primary Care and Ambulatory Services. “That’s why we’ve made the commitment to have our mobile units at community locations to make it easier for people to care for themselves and their families.” In the two-year period since Memorial initially launched the One City program for Hollywood residents, nearly 1,300 people (60% of them children) sought care at mobile units that came to Boulevard Heights Community Center, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, Washington Park Community Center, YMCA of South Florida and numerous churches. Nearly 600 people participated in the most recent Hollywood event, which was supported by partners that included the City of Hollywood, Hollywood PAL and Children’s Services Council of Broward County. Memorial Primary Care has had an ongoing presence not only in Hollywood, but also in Hallandale Beach, Dania Beach, Miramar and Pembroke Pines. The outreach improves the health of these communities, in part, by removing barriers to health and care and making it easier for individuals to connect with available resources. It’s all part of Memorial’s commitment to proactive health that can prevent or more easily treat chronic conditions before they become a crisis for individuals and their families. - State Of The City 2023: 2022 Was An Exciting Year For Sunny Isles Beach
State Of The City 2023: 2022 Was An Exciting Year For Sunny Isles Beach By Larisa Svechin, Mayor Sunny Isles Beach - www.sibfl.net February 8, 2023 Share It is my distinct privilege to be giving the 2023 State Of The City Address for the first time as your Mayor. I first moved to Sunny Isles Beach in 1987 and I am committed to furthering my previous work on the City Commission, now as your duly Elected Mayor. Going into our 25th year, 2022 was an exciting year for the City. We gained two new Commissioners, Jerry Joseph and Fabiola Stuyvesant, most recently following the Elections in November and Run-Off Election in December, myself, Commissioner Alex Lama and Commissioner Jeniffer Viscarra were Re-Elected. It was a year of unprecedented Elections, sometimes the campaigns were inimical. But now is the time for accord. A passion for the City is an important part of elected office. I applaud the Commission for their fortitude and dedication. I am sure that this Commission will unite through our collective motivation to bolster Sunny Isles Beach and all it has to offer. Having been away from City Business this past year, experiencing our City as a resident only and not also as a Mayor, I have a unique perspective, fresh eyes and a deeper understanding of what we the residents want to see in 2023. I have big goals for 2023 and beyond, which include bringing Absolute Budgetary Transparency to the Public, fostering a culture of Governmental Accountability and Reliability, providing much needed resources to residents, taking on our school overcrowding, providing for the most inclusive community and enacting the highest standards of service for our residents. Further, it is critical in this economy that your government is right sized, providing both professional and efficient services, so that we can once again lower our Tax Rate. My goals for the future are ambitious, but I am confident that our Commission and City Staff will make great strides in the coming years. In the last three years, our City saw a population boom. This created a test of our Infrastructure and Services. Our City Staff and Police Department strived to meet the demands. However our local school suffered. For the first time in twelve years, Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8 saw an influx of hundreds of new students over years past, topping out at over 2,300 students. The Commission, local volunteer groups and parents, united to call for change. One of my top priorities is to ensure that all of our residents and their children have access to the best possible facility. Already working with the District, I intend to do all things necessary so that our school is the jewel which attracted so many of our young families to begin with. The City started the process of a New Standard for Assuring Accuracy, Accountability and Transparency across all levels of the Government. This will continue through active engagement by the Public, Civic Groups, Religious Institutions and Volunteer Groups. It is important that all New Projects and Existing Programs are reviewed using a Systemic Process allowing for the best result for the amount of effort, time and money invested. The City launched a Roundtable Series for seniors and teens, as well as the Resident’s Academy, a Semi-Annual Course that introduces residents to the operations of the City. As a continuation of the work we have been undertaking on the Comprehensive Plan over the last few years, the City is in the process of completing a Holistic Review of the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The City not only supports but encourages Local Civic Groups to meet and bring ideas to the Commission. That is why we provide free meeting space for these groups, with more information available here: https://www.sibfl.net/clerk-facilities/ Most importantly, the Commission appointed residents to sit on the Charter Review Commission. This is done every ten years to improve our City Charter and make revisions so that our Government runs more effectively and efficiently. I applaud the women and men of this committee and thank them for their time and taking on this big responsibility. The Public is also invited to attend these Meetings and provide feedback to the Committee. Once the Committee completes their findings, they will present the revisions to the Commission so that the Commission can set a date for residents to decide and then it’s back to the polls! Voters will have an opportunity to Vote for Revisions they support sometime in May 2023. Public Safety has been top of mind for our City and myself personally. Moving into 2022, we continued to increase Enforcement and Visibility, while promoting our Public Safety Strategies. Longtime SIBPD Employee Edward Santiago was sworn in as Chief Of Police in April 2022. Exceptional Officers were also promoted to Sergeant and Lieutenant. These efforts will increase in 2023 so that we provide the highest levels of Service and Safety. Sunny Isles Beach Police are the best bar none. We will double efforts to partner with Volunteer Groups and other organizations, offering Safety Seminars for children and families. Serving our residents remains a top priority as we are constantly looking at ways to enhance your quality of life. Through various Outreach Efforts, Activities, Facilities and Public Art, we strive to provide Well-Rounded and Exceptional Services for every citizen in Sunny Isles Beach. Since opening Gateway Center in 2021, the City has provided expanded Diverse Programming for adults and seniors, including class offerings for seniors 62+ as part of our SIBHealthy Program, a subsidized list of programming, which provides seniors two free classes every month. Starting this year, residents can now rent Gateway Center for personal events, in addition to corporate meetings and gatherings. We are excited that early this year, The Spot, a brand-new center for teens located at 215 185th Street will be opening. The Spot will provide a dedicated space for our growing teen population to hang out after school, attend new classes and meet new friends. Another new facility coming soon is the Intracoastal Courts Park at 15800 Collins Avenue, Demo of the Ritz Carlton Sales Center was completed last year and the courts are expected to open in 2023. We are shining a light on Senator Gwen Margolis Park with the installation of new field lights. This Project will allow our soccer stars to have greater visibility when practicing on the field and is expected to be completed by the end of spring this year. At Pelican Community Park, the City installed fencing around the playground and a walkway to secure the entrance and exit for visitors. With locking gates on both sides, we can restrict access to the gym, playground and restrooms while keeping the park open to the general public. Keeping our parks secure allows our patrons to feel safe while enjoying the vast amenities they offer. The CCS Department Supplemented Current Program offerings at Pelican Community Park with a diverse set of new courses including ballroom dancing, guitar, theater and two competitive travel volleyball teams, who competed in local tournaments and the AAU Junior Nationals in Orlando. Our Competitive Sports Programs continue to reign supreme as the Advanced Cheer & Dance team received their first bid to compete in a national level competition, the SIB Select Soccer teams won several tournaments including the United Soccer Cup & Showcase, Enigma Cup and multiple divisions in the City’s SEAS Soccer League. CCS successfully implemented new parent and me classes and pee-wee sports, in addition to offering new after-school options in lieu of our traditional after school program, including study hall, e-gaming and DIY classes. After a two-year hiatus due to the Pandemic, Summer Camp was reintroduced providing service to more than 370 participants. My goal is to bring back aftercare and other options for working parents so that our youngest residents are active and safe after school. Our parks remain a center focus for the CCS Department and they are always studying ways to improve our resident’s experience. That is why they are in the process of creating a Parks and Recreation Master Plan that will define the direction, development and delivery of the City’s Parks and Recreation Services over the next 10 years. The City’s Public Art Program continues with one of the first projects involving a meditation garden located in the western area of Town Center Park. This is the site of the old skate park which was relocated to Haulover Park. This meditation garden is the result of many volunteer hours by the Public Arts Committee, who worked many years to bring this project to fruition. I thank them for all their hard work, expertise and dedication. This project is fully funded and construction is expected to begin this year. The IT Department is spearheading the deployment of a citywide Fiber Optic Network, a Project that has been in the works for the last 10 years. Until now, the City has relied on wireless for connectivity between all City Facilities, without any physical Infrastructure connecting our locations. This project will interconnect every City Property to provide superior redundancy and resiliency that will offer better service to our Staff and residents. The Final Phase of this Project will commence this year and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The Building Department hosted a Condominium Workshop to inform stakeholders of the possible policy, procedural and protocol changes to the Building Recertification Process to ensure our buildings are designed, constructed and maintained in a safe manner. The Department has also been working closely with properties to guarantee the proper maintenance and integrity of our buildings. By implementing an online appointment and queuing solution, Building has been able to increase efficiency with customers visiting the third-floor lobby. We will build on this improvement so that Permits and Meetings can be completed electronically and seamlessly. Our City should have the most state-of-the-art electronic system and process to ensure ease and minimize the cost to residents. Our Code Compliance Department hired additional officers to provide enhanced service, the goal is augmenting enforcement on the beach, along Collins Avenue and in our single-family neighborhoods. The Licensing Division performed Local Business Tax Receipts and Certificates of Use Renewals electronically when business owners had all documents uploaded to their accounts. The Planning and Zoning Department issued more than 700 Valid Short-Term Vacation Rental Licenses while continuing their strategy of monitoring delinquent licenses and violations. The Department also worked with an independent consultant to conduct a full review of the City’s Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code to identify conflicts and discrepancies. The City’s Roster of City Projects remains extensive. We have many exciting initiatives currently in progress and several slated to begin this year. I want to thank the entirety of our City Staff for demonstrating continued excellence in their work. All of the work accomplished would not be possible without the individualized efforts of our Departments and Staff. I also want to acknowledge my fellow Commissioners, both familiar and new colleagues, who I am ready to get to work with this year. There is much to do and I look forward to the progress and accomplishments we will make together. < Previous News Next News >

Direct from New Orleans with 'An Evening of New Orleans Jazz, Funk, and Soul,' we hope to have you dancing in the aisles! Celebrating over 48 years since their founding in 1977, this Grammy-winning New Orleans-based band has taken the traditional foundation of brass band music and incorporated it into a blend of genres, including bebop jazz, funk, and R&B/soul. With their special “musical gumbo,” the Dirty Dozen has toured across five continents and more than thirty countries. Thursday, December 4th will feature jazz vocalist Allan Harris in "Poetry of Jazz." The Brooklyn-born, Harlem-based vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and band leader, is a true luminary in the world of music. Revered by the Miami Herald as an artist graced with "the warmth of Tony Bennett, the bite and rhythmic sense of Sinatra, and the sly elegance of Nat ‘King' Cole," Harris stands as an embodiment of moving and magisterial artistry. As Harlem’s own modern-day troubadour, Harris takes classic poetry — from Shakespeare’s sonnets to Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance — and drops it into the deep pocket of jazz. He’ll be joined by his fantastic group of jazz musicians. Jazz vocalist Niki Haris joins us on Wednesday, January 14th, 2026 alongside The Shelly Berg Trio. Niki is a multi-talented singer, dancer, actress, choreographer, and daughter of the Grammy® nominated jazz pianist Gene Harris. Her vocal collaborations include a “Who’s Who” of the music business. She has worked with jazz greats from Stanley Turrentine, Joe Sample, and the Jazz Crusaders to recordings with Ray Charles to Mick Jagger, Whitney Houston, Sheryl Crow, and many others. Shelly Berg is a Steinway piano artist and five-time Grammy® nominated arranger, orchestrator, and producer, with numerous recordings to his credit. Not only a performer, he is the Dean of the University of Miami’s prestigious Frost School of Music, host of Generation Next on Sirius XM, music director for The Jazz Cruise, and artistic advisor for the Jazz Roots series at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami. “Shelly Berg has always been a musician’s musician. And even for jazz enthusiasts who had considered Berg to be a technically-astounding and aggressive pianist with unstoppable energy,” says Don Williamson of JazzReview.com. Back by popular demand, Diego Figueiredo and Friends will return on Wednesday, February 4th with The Jazz Duets. Acclaimed as one of the greatest guitarists in the world, Figueiredo will perform a series of duets with his fantastic jazz friends, Nestor Torres on flute, pianist Shelly Berg and percussionist Sammy Figueroa. An extraordinary star among the world's greatest jazz guitarists, Figueiredo’s superb technique, timing and imagination have made him one of the hottest international names. His unique skills and his concert performances have been a success in more than 60 countries around the world. He has released 28 CDS, three DVDs and a book. “I suggest that anyone who knows or appreciates the greatest jazz guitarists who ever lived check out this Brazilian genius," says Jazz Impresario Todd Barkan. On Wednesday, March 11th Gold Coast Jazz Society will present jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson in her "Karrin’s Kaleidoscope" show. For her Kaleidoscopeconcerts, Karrin eases through an eclectic array of styles she’s known for, from her 5 Grammy® nominated recordings, to the Great American Songbook; from Classic Pop songs to her own originals from “Some of That Sunshine;” from French chansons to Brazilian classics; from the Blues and Bebop to songs of justice and beyond. Showcasing the material of such artists as Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, James Taylor, The Beatles, Billy Joel, Carmen McRae, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Blossom Dearie, Shirley Horn, Mose Allison, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Rosa Passos, Djavan, Edith Piaf, and her own material, this show is soulful and heartfelt, and her band is always top-notch. The March 25 concert will feature the return of the internationally-renowned Canadian pianist and vocalist, Michael Kaeshammer. This show is part of his "Turn it Up" 2024/2025 Tour. The acclaimed Canadian virtuoso pianist and singer, Kaeshammer has earned an international following as a triple threat: a technical master of many different moods, an eloquent singer-songwriter, and a charming and engaging performer. His signature style weaves classical, jazz, blues, boogie-woogie, stride, and pop into a rich and vibrant sonic tapestry. Turn It Up, Kaeshammer’s 15th album, is a dynamic and rollicking collection resistant to a single, catch-all genre. Closing our concert series on Wednesday, April 15th will be the jazz phenom, Grace Kelly, with her Quartet for her "Grace Kelly 20th Anniversary Tour." An unequivocal musical prodigy, singer-saxophonist-songwriter-composer and band leader, Kelly has rocked the jazz world with sold-out concerts, acclaimed albums and a resume that includes performing at the Hollywood Bowl and as part of the house band for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” – all before reaching her mid-twenties. Kelly has performed and recorded with renowned artists including Lin Manuel- Miranda, Dave Brubeck, Phil Woods, Huey Lewis, Harry Connick Jr., Gloria Estefan, Questlove, and Wynton Marsalis. Grace is “[A] jazz innovator… Making jazz young” says Billboard Magazine. - Tip of The Spear: DPW Is The Heart of the City That Makes Everything Work
Tip of The Spear: DPW Is The Heart of the City That Makes Everything Work By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper February 23, 2023 Share Municipal Governments have many services that they perform. Obviously Police and Fire Services are right up there at the top of the list. There are other services that are not always that obvious unless you lose them. Public Works encompass water, sanitation, sewer, drainage, fleet services, trash removal, cemetery, sidewalks, lighting and streets. I like to say DPW (Department of Public Works) is the heart of the City that makes everything work. There are many employees that contribute to the operations of our City. Beginning with Director Jeff Odoms. Director Odoms came to us after working in the City of West Palm Beach for 25 years. He heads a team of assistant directors, engineers, operators and other specially trained employees. Dr. Jeremy Earle addressed the amazing accomplishments of the entire team in a recent update from Jeff Odoms. As he said, “you have been the “tip of the spear” in our efforts to completely revamp our Infrastructure from top to bottom.” Recently we were informed that Peter Kunen will be leaving the Engineering Team. While on staff he led many efforts including safe neighborhood projects, late night and weekend repair work projects. We wish him luck on his new endeavors. Also, in the Engineering Team we have Assistant City Engineer Carla Sanchez and GIS Coordinator Wilson Sanchez. This Team is tasked with monitoring projects and outside vendors to make sure all projects are moving forward and are on budget. On the managerial side of operations we have Assistant Director Casimir and Operations Manager Kelvin Thomas. This Team oversees operations of Plants, Pumping Stations and Distribution Pipes. With our aged Infrastructure this job has been very daunting and demanding. The Water Services Team has accomplished the First Green Belt Six Sigma Project. Six Sigma is a set of standards that was established back in 1986 by an engineer to improve quality delivery of services. The Team set a goal to fix water breaks within 4 hours. Their first test case was 4.5 hours. After evaluation and setting up different counter measures the repairs of pipes were improved. Now all repairs due to this new approach have repairs done in an average of 3 hours. This means water pipe failures are having less impact on residents and businesses. On the Sanitation Sewer Side Operations Manager Thompson, Supervisor Travis Tucker and Mechanic Jermaine Eleby also have been working tirelessly. Often getting called out all hours, sometimes early mornings for sewer alarms. This Team is tasked with protecting our City and citizens from sewer overflows. Even at peak capacity and Hollywood asking for reduced flow they have balanced the system without environmental impacts. The DPW Team is also tasked with Environmental Compliance. EC Manger Jocelyn Brogan and her team follows all properties in the City to ensure they are in compliance with drainage and treating their out flows. This includes grease traps and drains. The Team managing water meters has been faced with a year-long task of fixing the entire system. If you have been following my column, I have informed our readers on the malfunctioning of the meters throughout the City. They have been working with a special team to replace the malfunctioning meters and set up a new business model for billings. The core to funding our future replacement and repairs will depend on accurate billings and collections. Stormwater Teams continue to monitor and clean our City drains. With the two large systems in the Southwest and Northeast Quadrants ensuring that these pumps are operational and this is vital to the safety and security of our residents and properties. Another “tip of the spear" is Mary Francis Jeannot the Fiscal and Budgetary Manager of DPW. She was transferred from the City Manager’s Office years ago. She took with her a true understanding of the internal processes in the City which she has utilized and expanded on. Through hard work she has improved close out of issues by 70% in one year alone. She not only works on the water side but works with Fleet Manager Yesid Caballero on equipment and fuel purchasing. Alongside Master Mechanic Byron Taylor they truly have kept us literally moving. The Sanitation Team led by James Simmons continues to perform under demanding conditions. Years ago, there were anywhere from 30-40 employees in Sanitation. Through automation and operational changes like purchasing front end loaders for commercial accounts the team consists of 15. Currently we are reviewing all of Sanitation Operations with a focus on maintaining it in house. Once completed the study will be brought to the Commission. In addition to DPW Director Odoms oversees the maintenance of all facilities, streets and the cemetery. The past year the Commission approved revamping the cemetery and we are looking at how the service can be expanded and improved. This year is the first that funds of $500,000 have been approved for street resurfacing throughout the City. As we continue to fine tune our Staff levels to ensure we are doing the work that is needed in our facilities, we also need to be retrofitted for Staff. This work is being performed in-house by our Wonder Construction Team. In closing Director Odoms shared that by count there have been 56 projects executed with 45 this year alone. This did not include the large-scale replacement projects. Replacement of catch basins and curb inlet improvements. There were also over 20 boiled waters tested, performed and cleared. The other great news is we have received a $14.9 Million Dollar Grant for Pumping Stations, a $2.8 Million Dollar Grant for a 70 inch force main project and are bonding $53 Million Dollars for additional improvements. I personally want to thank Director Odoms and the entire Team for their professionalism and hard work! They are making our City run 24/7/365 and are now planning for a positive and sustainable future! As always, I am available for your questions, concerns, and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out to me at my Office: (954) 457-1318. On my Cell/Text: (954) 632-5700. Or email at: jcooper@cohb.org < Previous News Next News >

- Back To School Food Allergy Guide: What Parents Need To Know | sun-times
Back To School Food Allergy Guide: What Parents Need To Know By BPT Sep 17, 2025 Children Spend Anywhere From 800 To 1,100 Hours At School Each Year. For Those With Food Allergies, That Time Comes With Added risks. From Cafeteria Meals To Classroom Snacks, The Risk Of A Food Allergy Exposure Is An Everyday Concern. And with good reason: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 13 children - roughly two per classroom - are affected by food allergies. Of those, 42% have experienced at least one severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis. For children at risk, even a small exposure can be life-threatening. The good news? With the right preparation, you can help your child manage food allergies with care and consistency. Discover how to educate, plan and confidently communicate with school staff and other parents to support your child throughout the school year. Awareness and education are key What is a food allergy? Simply put, it's an allergic reaction that occurs after eating a food allergen. Your body's immune system mistakenly responds to a certain food as if it were a harmful germ, causing an allergic reaction. In children, the most common food allergies are to peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fin fish and shellfish. A serious allergic reaction involves two or more body organs - the skin, lungs, stomach and/or heart. Symptoms may include: • Hives on the skin, sometimes on several parts of the body • Shortness of breath, wheezing, repetitive cough • Tightness in the throat, hoarse, trouble swallowing • Swelling of the tongue, lips or throat • Stomach discomfort such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea or vomiting • Blood pressure changes • Pale, faint, dizzy, confused Epinephrine is the only medication that can stop anaphylaxis. Administer it as soon as possible. Remember the rule: "Epinephrine First, Epinephrine Fast." 10 tips for a safe school year Here are 10 essential tasks to help ensure your child with food allergies is safe, supported and included at school. • Schedule a back-to-school health checkup. Obtain updated medication forms, epinephrine prescriptions and an emergency care plan. Discuss whether new food allergy therapies - such as biologics - might offer added protection in case of accidental exposure. • Meet with school staff. Discuss food allergy accommodations in the cafeteria and classroom. Review the emergency plan. This is especially important if your child starts a new school. • Teach your child how to stay safe. Help your child recognize signs of an allergic reaction and understand when and how to ask for help. Make sure your child knows who to turn to and what steps to take in an emergency. • Be ready for the first day of school. Submit all required school health forms, drop off your child's epinephrine and share a copy of the emergency care plan. • Pack allergy-safe meals and snacks. Make sure your child only eats what is safe based on his or her dietary restrictions. • Plan for snacks and special events. Confirm school policies for snack times and meals during field trips. Encourage no sharing of food. • Ensure epinephrine is easy to access. Find out if the school stocks epinephrine, where it's stored, and if the staff is trained to administer it in an emergency. Remember, your child is permitted by law to self-carry an epinephrine device. • Address bullying and exclusion. Talk with your child about speaking up if they are being excluded, teased or bullied due to food allergies. Encourage talking with a trusted adult. • Check in with your child. Make it a habit to ask your child how things are going at school, including if there's any difficulty managing food allergies. • Keep the conversation going. Communication between home and school is key. Keep teachers, school nurses and staff informed of any changes in your child's health or needs. Food allergies don't have to get in the way of a safe, fun school year. With a little planning and teamwork, you can help your child thrive in and out of the classroom.
