  • Hollywood Police Get Body Worn Cameras: The City Has Been Awarded $1.7 Million To Launch The Program

Hollywood Police Get Body Worn Cameras: The City Has Been Awarded $1.7 Million To Launch The Program June 23, 2022 Share Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) Presented a check for $1.7 Million Dollars to the Hollywood City Commission for Body-Worn Cameras intended for the Hollywood Police Department. The funding for Body-Worn Cameras is an effort to increase the Transparency and Accountability of Local Law Enforcement that will help build trust and understanding within the City of Hollywood’s Community. The Hollywood Police Department is one of the few Departments across the State that doesn’t have Officer Body-Worn Cameras, but thanks to some Federal Funding, Cameras will be coming to this Department. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson stopped by the Hollywood Commission Chambers recently to present the Funding In-Person. The Department is now getting $1.7 Million in Federal Funding for some long overdue Equipment which are 250 Body-Worn Cameras. As part of the $1.5 Trillion Omnibus Spending Bill signed by President Biden, Funding for this Program was Co-Sponsored by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Congresswoman Frederica Wilson as part of their 2022 Community Project Funding Appropriation Requests. “In recent years, we’ve seen how the bonds of trust between the Public and Law Enforcement have become frayed across the Country. To heal those broken bonds, we must take steps to address this disconnect and put in place initiatives that seek to rectify them,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “Body-Worn Cameras are here to protect everybody – that means both our Residents and the Police alike. I’m proud to have delivered for the City of Hollywood and to have secured $1.7 Million for Body-Worn Cameras to the Hollywood Police Department’s Law Enforcement Officers.” “Thanks to the efforts by Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz and Wilson, the City will now be able to implement a BWC (Body Worn Camera) Program that is expected to provide enhanced transparency between Police Officers and the Public and with quicker resolution to cases via this additional form of Evidence,” says Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy. Through this Funding, in the first year, the Department is expected to purchase 250 BWC’s and the additional necessary Hardware, Software and Infrastructure to launch the Program. Four (4) new Staff Members, including a Sworn Sergeant and three Civilian Digital Evidence Specialists will be hired to Administer the Program. Full Deployment, Ongoing Operational and Administration Costs associated with the Program is estimated at approximately $572,000 Annually, which will be Funded through the City’s Budget. “As an Agency, we are committed to exploring Technology that will bring forth the High-Quality Public Service expected of Police Officers and Convey a sense of Procedural Justice that our Community expects and our Mission States,” says Hollywood Police Chief Chris O’Brien. “The BWC will be an additional set of eyes on the scene that can then later be used in training sessions as an uncensored look at a response to unfolding events.” The Public’s perception and trust in Law Enforcement is a crucial component in reducing Social and Racial Inequality within Communities. In 2014, a National Institute of Justice Study found that Body-Worn Cameras increase positive interactions and make people feel safer. Increasingly, Law Enforcement Agencies across the Country and the World have incorporated Body-Worn Cameras as essential tools to enhance Safety, Trust and improve interactions between the Public and Police Officers. < Previous News Next News >

  • Protecting Paradise: Alarming Statistics Show 1-in-4 Residents Are Willing to Defy Evacuation Warnings

Protecting Paradise: Alarming Statistics Show 1-in-4 Residents Are Willing to Defy Evacuation Warnings June 15, 2023 Share As summer approaches, the allure of pristine beaches and vibrant sunsets beckons Floridians to enjoy the season's bliss. However, amidst the allure, the looming threat of hurricanes casts a shadow over paradise. The American Automobile Association (AAA) has conducted a groundbreaking survey to shed light on the state of Hurricane Preparedness among Floridians. With 1-in-4 residents willing to defy evacuation warnings and a startling 67% lacking Flood Insurance, it is evident that education and comprehensive coverage are paramount. AAA published the findings of their survey and provides valuable insights into insurance policies that can safeguard both property and travel plans during Hurricane Season. Join us as we explore the implications of these statistics, delve into the importance of Flood Insurance, and discover the top insurance policies recommended to ensure peace of mind for Floridians facing the tumultuous Storm Season. The recent survey conducted by AAA exposes a concerning lack of preparedness among Florida residents as Hurricane Season approaches. Astonishingly, 1-in-5 Floridians (19%) fail to make any advanced preparations for severe weather. Equally disquieting is the fact that 24% of respondents admitted they would disregard Evacuation Warnings, putting their lives and properties at grave risk. Among those who would consider evacuating, a mere 56% would take action only when a Hurricane reaches a Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Understanding the motivations behind these decisions is crucial in addressing the gaps in preparedness. Survey respondents revealed a variety of reasons for ignoring Evacuation Warnings, including a desire to stay and repair Property Damage (40%), inability to accommodate pets (30%), faith in the storm changing course (22%), lack of knowledge regarding Evacuation Destinations (18%), fear of looting (17%), and financial constraints (15%). Importance of Adequate Insurance Coverage In the face of such alarming statistics, AAA urges Floridians to prioritize their safety and financial security by ensuring they have adequate Insurance Coverage. Hurricanes and Severe Weather can wreak havoc on homes, vehicles, and travel plans. Understanding the intricacies of Insurance Policies is crucial for protecting one's Assets. Here are the top Insurance Policies recommended by AAA for Comprehensive Coverage during Hurricane Season: Homeowner's Insurance: While this policy covers Wind Damage to your property, it does not extend to Flood Damage caused by rising water. Homeowners are strongly advised to acquire separate Flood Insurance Policies to ensure full protection. Flood Insurance: Flooding is a common and devastating consequence of Severe Weather, often causing extensive damage. AAA emphasizes that Flood Insurance is essential for all homeowners, regardless of their property's Flood Zone Classification. Waiting until a storm forms can be perilous, as new Flood Insurance Policies issued through FEMA have a Mandatory 30-day waiting period. Comprehensive Auto Coverage: To safeguard against potential Vehicle Damage from fallen trees, Flooding, or Hail during a Hurricane, AAA advises Motorists to ensure they have Comprehensive Auto Coverage. It is important to note that Vehicle Damage is not automatically covered under Homeowner's Policies. Travel Insurance: For those planning Summer or Fall vacations, Travel Insurance provides crucial protection against unforeseen disruptions caused by Severe Weather. Policies are available to reimburse covered losses resulting from flight delays, cancellations, and non-refundable deposits on hotels, cruises, and excursions. Steps For Homeowners To Take Immediately In addition to acquiring appropriate Insurance Coverage, AAA emphasizes the importance of taking proactive steps to protect one's property and ensure a smooth Claims Process. Here are some vital actions that Homeowners should undertake without delay: Review Your Insurance Coverage: Schedule a comprehensive review of your Homeowner's Insurance Policy with a Licensed Agent. Evaluate the adequacy of your coverage, discuss deductibles, and verify that recent home upgrades, such as pools, screen enclosures, and fences, are appropriately protected. Document And Store Essential Information: Store your Insurance and Flood Policy numbers on your Mobile Phone for quick access during emergencies. Familiarize yourself with various methods of filing Claims, including Online Platforms or Mobile Apps, to expedite the process. Additionally, maintain a thorough inventory of your belongings by recording a video or taking pictures, noting important details such as receipts, purchase dates, and model numbers. Preserve Important Documents: Store vital documents, including: Birth Certificates, Social Security Cards, and Insurance Policy information, in a portable waterproof container. This precaution ensures these valuable records remain safe from Water Damage during a Hurricane. The Significance of Flood Insurance The destructive power of flooding cannot be underestimated, as evidenced by the historic floods that ravaged South Florida earlier this year. AAA emphasizes that Catastrophic Flood Damage can occur regardless of one's residence being in a High-Risk Flood Zone. The organization strongly advocates for all Floridians to consider obtaining Flood Insurance, stressing that delaying this decision until a storm threatens could prove disastrous. Astonishingly, AAA's Survey revealed that a staggering 67% of respondents do not possess Flood Insurance. The reasons cited include residing outside a Flood Zone (57%), lack of prior flooding experiences (34%), concerns about affordability (24%), and a mistaken belief that Homeowner's Insurance provides sufficient Coverage (9%). Facts About Flood Insurance To emphasize the importance of Flood Insurance, AAA presents key facts that shed light on the magnitude of flood-related losses and the significance of proper Coverage: • Annual Flood Damage exceeds $5 Billion nationwide on average, making it the most costly Natural Disaster in the United States. • In 2022, the National Flood Insurance Program processed over 54,000 Claims, providing Policyholders with over $1.6 Billion in Coverage. • Hurricane Ian alone resulted in more than 46,000 Claims and $1.5 Billion in Policy Coverage. • Surprisingly, almost 40% of Flood Insurance Claims originate from homes located outside High-Risk Flood Zones. • Repairing just one inch of Water Damage in a home can cost over $25,000. • Flood Insurance Policyholders received an average Claim payment of $68,000 between 2016 and 2021, which never requires repayment. As Floridians bask in the Summer sun, the specter of Hurricanes looms large. This recent comprehensive Survey exposes alarming statistics surrounding Hurricane Preparedness and highlights the pressing need for proper Insurance Coverage. By prioritizing Safety and securing the right Insurance Policies, Floridians can protect their homes, vehicles, and travel plans from the devastating effects of Severe Weather. Flood Insurance emerges as a critical component of Comprehensive Coverage, as flooding can occur anywhere in the state. By taking immediate action and ensuring they have adequate coverage, Floridians can navigate Hurricane Season with peace of mind, confident that they are well-equipped to weather any storm. < Previous News Next News >

  • Avenue Q, The ‘Triple Crown’: Tony Award-Winning Musical That Is ‘Part Flesh, Part Felt And Packed With Heart’

Avenue Q, The ‘Triple Crown’: Tony Award-Winning Musical That Is ‘Part Flesh, Part Felt And Packed With Heart’ February 14, 2025 Share Entr’acte Theatrix’ first production of 2025 will be Avenue Q, the ‘triple crown’ (Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book) Tony Award-winning musical that is ‘part flesh, part felt and packed with heart’. The production will run from Thursday March 6th – Sunday, March 16th in the Bhetty Waldron Theatre at Actor’s Rep in West Palm Beach. A truly unique show that ran for over 6 years on Broadway, Avenue Q, the musical that bested Wicked at the 2004 Tonys, focuses on recent college graduate, Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it's clear this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. The show addresses adult issues with humor, empathy, monsters, and music. Director Carlo Sabusap, who will also take on the role of Trekkie Monster in the production, has cast Esqui as Princeton and Rod, Elizabeth Robinson as Kate Monster, Elijah Pestana as Nicky, Greg Halmos as Brian, Rose Foster as Christmas Eve, Sarah Romeo as Gary Coleman, Ariel Hodgetts as Lucy and Bad Idea Bear, and Sarah Kenny as Bad Idea Bear, Mrs. Thistletwat, and others. Avenue Q’s Musical Director is Aaliyah Moin. Elizabeth Southwell will serve as the production’s Technical Director and Lighting Designer, Jaycie Cohen is the Sound Engineer, and Jason Fisher doubles as the show's Stage Manager and Assistant Director. “We are yet again at one of those times in our history when we need some levity in the world,” Director Sabusap says. “The current economic and political climate, for some, is rough. I think we need to bring some light into our lives, and Avenue Q is definitely one of the best ways to remind ourselves that even when the times get tough, we must remember to laugh. “I feel like Avenue Q is one of those shows that reaches deep down inside of everyone, the comedy comes from us finding the ridiculous in the mundane, an experience that all of us go through as we grow up,” he continues. “The puppets give us the comfort food of childlike wonder while the subject matter pulls us into those relatable situations that we as adults have experienced. Although the cast is primarily young adults, they know and can express the experiences presented in the show. They're all talented, hard-working, and very funny. Avenue Q comes with the unique challenge that most other musical theater shows don't have, in that when you're on stage with the puppet, you're acting twice. You're not only expressing and emoting your own physical body, but also this seemingly inanimate object which they can magically bring to life. I'm sure that audiences will find this one to be side-hurtingly funny. Whether you're looking for your purpose in life, a reason to get out of your house, in search of crude humor, Avenue Q is definitely the best bet!” “This is our first production at Bob Carter’s Actor’s Workshop,” says Entr’Acte Theatrix Founder and Executive Producer Vicki Halmos. “The space is perfect for us – it’s small and intimate, with just the right number of seats. And there’s lots of parking available! Avenue Q is one of our favorite shows,” she continues. “It allows our actors the opportunity to stretch their skill sets – working with these puppets takes discipline and strength – mental and physical. It’s funny, and clever, and yet it packs a number of important messages concerning personal relationships, discrimination against people who are different, and the truths about learning to be an adult. Avenue Q will run from Thursday March 6th – Sunday, March 16th in the Bhetty Waldron Theatre at Actor’s Rep, located at 1000 North Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401. Performances are on Thursdays and Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at: www.PalmBeachTheater.org - Or by phone at: (561) 833-7529. • The Cooke Book: Darrian Ford And The Music Of Sam Cooke

The Cooke Book: Darrian Ford And The Music Of Sam Cooke January 18, 2023 Share Darrian Ford, a Chicago native began his professional theater career at age 13 in Oscar Brown Jr.'s THE GREAT NITTY GRITTY. At 15, the dance prodigy joined The Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theater and at 19 moved to New York City to dance in the companies of Alvin Ailey and Donald Byrd/The Group. He made his Broadway debut as Charlie in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s STATE FAIR, about which the New York Times said “...note the irrepressibly comic Darrian Ford.” He also appeared in The Who’s TOMMY (B’way/First National), SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE (First National), for which he won The Black Theater Alliance Award for Best Actor in a Musical and the First National tour of THE COLOR PURPLE. He finally re-debuted in his first Chicago Production since 1998. Of the Court Theater's 2017 production of FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE, The Chicago Tribune said "Little Moe (Ford) lends High Tenor zest to these songs... the long-time dancer has lost nothing to the years." Get a load of that! Darrian also co-starred opposite Halle Berry in HBO’s INTRODUCING DOROTHY DANDRIDGE as Fayard Nicholas of the legendary Nicholas Brothers and recurred on Disney's THAT'S SO RAVEN! In addition to a dozen appearances on daytime talk shows as musical guest, he has been featured on several of his Broadway colleagues’ albums, original workshop recordings and concept albums. Since its 2006 debut in New York City, Darrian continues to tour and perform his original concept concert, THE COOKE BOOK - The Music of Sam Cooke, around the country. The reviews everywhere have been stellar and along the way he's initiating a whole new generation of Sam Cooke fans. As a performing Singer/Songwriter, you can catch him in top Jazz Venues, Performing Arts Centers, Cabarets and Clubs around the country with the most refreshing, exciting and new voice in Jazz. Prior to the release of his latest album, he released two EPs, EVERYTHING and HEAVY DEMONSTRATION. In February of 2018, he gratefully released his first full-length album of original vocal Jazz, NEW STANDARDS. It debuted at #1 on the NACC Jazz Album Debut chart, #9 on the ROOTS Chart and #11 on the VibeUK Top 20 Jazz Albums of 2018. You will hear influences from his theatrical background and some of his music heroes like Al Jarreau, Mel Torme', Nancy Wilson and Tony Bennett. On the anniversary of the great singer’s birth, The City of Aventura presents The Cooke Book: The Music of Sam Cooke, a celebration of his innovative (but too brief) career on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Cooke blazed a trail for Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Rod Stewart, Smokey Robinson and many other giants of soul music. The concert delivers songs from the legendary Singer/Songwriter that seamlessly highlight Cooke's musical journey from gospel golden boy to his transition into an international pop sensation as well as his remarkable Jazz and Blues interpretations from his triumphant Copacabana appearance. A Chicago son, like Cooke himself, Darrian Ford performs these timeless and classic melodies with expanded and re-invigorated arrangements that hold stylistically true to the era, while his "... scorching vocals send you searching for your soul," according to The Chicago Tribune. • Miami Teen Volunteers: Changing The Lives Of Special Needs Kids Simply By Being Their Friends

Miami Teen Volunteers: Changing The Lives Of Special Needs Kids Simply By Being Their Friends January 19, 2023 Share Dozens of Miami teenagers are helping change the lives of special needs children by simply spending time with them. While special needs children may have the best doctors and therapists, they don’t necessarily have friends and safe places they can go for social interaction. The Friendship Circle of Miami offers a solution to these issues. The Friendship Circle of Miami is a nonprofit dedicated to offering friendship and acceptance to individuals with special needs, and providing respite to their families. The nonprofit pairs teen and young adult volunteers with kids, teens, and adults with special needs to bond over shared experiences such as art, band, swimming, equestrian and social circles. Volunteers come from a variety of high schools in the Miami-Dade School District. Samantha Elkins, Sydney Hochstadt, and Jordan McKean are all seniors at Miami Palmetto Senior High School. They have each been volunteers at the Friendship Circle for three years participating in the Friendship Circle Band, and Tween and Teen Scene. “The kids at Friendship Circle are very kind, smart, and unique in many ways. Getting the privilege to interact and form relationships with them is something that I don't take for granted. Carrying friendships outside of the designated volunteering hours to text or call and reuniting each week is definitely rewarding. I also like seeing the kids become more confident in themselves and see that they can make friends and they are capable,” says Elkins. “Through Friendship Circle, I form valuable friendships with people who sadly do not often experience such,” adds Hochstadt. “The most rewarding aspect of my volunteerism with Friendship Circle is seeing the happiness on my friends' faces upon first seeing me at every event. It is something I would not trade for the world.” McKean says, “Seeing their faces light up when they play an instrument or sing a song is an amazing feeling. The most rewarding part of this entire experience has been the ongoing connections I've made with my friends.” About Friendship Circle The Friendship Circle model involves carefully matching teen volunteers one-to-one with children who have special needs, providing the mentoring and friendship that these children seek. Our model promotes inclusion and builds social and recreational skills among children, teens and young adults with special needs, regardless of their level of ability. Beginning with a pilot program and handful of children in 2004, they have served hundreds of children with special needs and empowered thousands of teenagers to become community leaders, advocates, and role-models. The facility they currently operate their 21 programs out of has become insufficient to manage their tremendous growth and lacks the necessary space to introduce new, innovative services they aspire to offer and that families seek. Under the leadership and direction of their Board of Directors, they are building a state-of-the-art campus. The new Friendship Campus will offer 20,000 square feet of space which will serve as an activity center, social meeting place and hub for their network of families, individuals with special needs, volunteers, professional staff, and supporters. The new campus will comprise two main buildings which will include beautiful and engaging activity rooms, lounges, classrooms, and a number of custom rooms. More space will allow them to grow their programs and add specially designed rooms for their participants, which will allow them to add new, innovative programs. The most powerful force in society is a child with a dream coupled with the knowledge, nurturing and means to achieve that dream. The Friendship Campus is a lifelong dream for children with special needs and their families. They hope you will help them make this dream a reality by joining them to meet their $7.5 million goal to develop a beautiful state-of-the-art home for children, for now, and for the future. The event will also give community leaders and supporters throughout Miami-Dade County the opportunity to unite and celebrate the power of friendship. • Caring For A Special Needs Dog | sun-times

Caring For A Special Needs Dog South Florida Sun Times Mar 19, 2026 Providing A Safe, Loving Home For A Dog Is Rewarding For Many Reasons, And It Can Sometimes Be Even More So For A Canine Companion With Special Needs. Dogs Impacted By Blindness, Deafness, The Loss Of A Limb, Or A Chronic Medical Or Behavioral Condition Can Live A Full And Happy Life If Its Owners Provide A Bit Of Extra Care And Consideration. Dr. Lori Teller, a Clinical Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, gives advice on simple accommodations owners can make for dogs with special needs in order to maximize their safety and comfort. Simple Accommodations Special needs can include conditions that dogs are born with, those that arise due to a medical condition, or natural changes as they age. Generally, dogs with special needs are resilient and adapt well, especially with support and consideration for their individual needs. This is especially true for dogs that lose their sight, hearing, or one of their limbs. “Dogs that have lost their vision are able to acclimate fairly quickly; they start to rely on their other senses to adjust,” Teller said. Caring for a blind dog may include: • Maintaining a stable environment where furniture and objects are not frequently rearranged • Providing a clear path to their beds, food, water bowls, and other areas where they spend most of their time • Being increasingly aware of their activity — especially around swimming pools For pets that are hearing impaired, there are numerous methods owners can use to effectively communicate. “Deaf dogs can learn sign language and be trained to sit, stay, lie down, come, heel, and more,” Teller said. “Since they cannot hear their name called, some owners benefit from using a flashing light to attract their attention, and they can be trained to respond to touch as well.” Finally, most dogs that lose a leg adapt well to having three legs and are able to return to their prior exercise routines. “Dogs are amazing,” Teller said. “I have seen so many three-legged dogs that take up walking, running, and most of their general activities very quickly.” However, an unhealthy diet can hinder three-legged dogs’ ability to adjust to their new lifestyle and can also lead to further health struggles. “While it is important to keep all dogs at a healthy weight, it is of the utmost importance for a dog that is three-legged, as additional weight puts extra stress on their remaining joints and can aggravate Arthritis as the dog ages,” Teller said. Being A Constant Source Of Support Behavioral challenges and chronic medical conditions may take a bit more effort to accommodate, but a veterinarian can help advise on the best ways to address your pet’s specific needs. “For example, dogs that are paralyzed in the rear will need help getting up and moving around,” Teller said. “Carts or doggy wheelchairs can help with mobility and allow a dog to move freely around its environment.” Nursing care is especially important for dogs with multiple chronic conditions or that need help with urination and defection; these pets tend to do best if the owner or another caretaker can be regularly available to help. “Pets that cannot urinate on their own may require their bladders to be manually expressed multiple times each day and are prone to urinary tract infections,” Teller said. “If they also have trouble passing a bowel movement, they may need a special diet, stool softeners, and laxatives. “These dogs may also need to wear diapers and will require extra time and attention for grooming to maintain adequate hygiene, and they are also at higher risk of skin infections that may require veterinary intervention,” Teller said. Dogs with special needs may have an increased cost of care, but a veterinarian can discuss treatment options and cost-saving measures to ensure the pet maintains the highest possible quality of life. Cultivating A Healthy Lifestyle Dogs with special needs of any kind may require extra time to maintain their mental stimulation through specialized toys, activities, and experiences. “Blind or deaf dogs may enjoy puzzle toys where they can use their sense of smell to find treats,” Teller said. “These animals can also benefit from leash walks or safe places outdoors to explore the variety of smells and pleasant weather.” When walking dogs with missing limbs, it is important to allow them to set the pace and determine how far they are comfortable going. “Paralyzed dogs can be fitted with a dog cart or put in a doggy stroller and be walked around the neighborhood as well,” Teller said. Despite the lifestyle changes a dog with special needs is experiencing, their excitement for what the day has to offer remains the same. “The great thing about dogs is that they are just happy to be alive, and they embrace every moment,” Teller said. “Once you make special accommodations, they do super well and can live a very happy and fulfilling life.” Pet Talk is a service of the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University. • When To See Your Vet? Spotting The Difference Between Urine Marking and Urinary Problems

When To See Your Vet? Spotting The Difference Between Urine Marking and Urinary Problems August 24, 2023 Share Once pets have learned to urinate where it is appropriate, whether it is outdoors or in their litter box, it can be frustrating for owners when their pet urinates elsewhere in the house. While your first instinct may be to reprimand them for the unwanted behavior, you should first consider if they are simply marking or if there is a bigger health concern at play. Urine marking, a natural behavior for dogs and cats, is when pets release small amounts of urine in multiple places, whether it is on new objects in the home or their favorite spot. Marking typically occurs when pets are relieving stress or signaling ownership of their territory to other animals. Urinary diseases, on the other hand, are an unwanted and often painful experience for pets that will most likely require veterinary attention. But because urinary diseases result in increased urination, similar to urine marking, it can be difficult for owners to spot the difference between the two. Dr. Genna Atiee, a clinical assistant professor in small animal internal medicine at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, says owners can differentiate between urine marking or urinary diseases by keeping a watchful eye on their pet’s bathroom habits. “There are some easy things to tip an owner off that something is medically wrong, such as blood in the urine, visible pushing or straining to urinate, crying out in pain when peeing, unpleasant-smelling urine, or urinating near the door or around the litter box,” Atiee explained. “Increased drinking can also indicate that there is a kidney problem,” Atiee continued. “Kidneys are responsible for maintaining water balance by pulling water out of what they filter from the blood, leaving waste in the urine behind. But when the kidneys lose function, they can no longer pull water effectively, so pets have to drink more to avoid dehydration and urinate more as a result.” Additionally, the amount of urine a pet releases at one time can help differentiate the type of urinary disease. “Dogs and cats with inflammation in the lower urinary tract, such as the bladder or urethra, may urinate frequently in small amounts,” Atiee said. “On the other hand, dogs and cats with kidney disease may urinate large volumes of urine because they cannot filter urine appropriately.” If an owner notices symptoms of a urinary problem or is concerned about their pet’s peeing habits, Atiee encourages them to take their pet to their veterinarian because a urine test can reveal whether there is a health concern. “A urinalysis can show us many things,” Atiee said. “For example, how concentrated the urine is, as a low concentration can indicate the kidneys are not working well; if there is evidence of infection or inflammation; what the pH of the urine is because a high pH can indicate a urinary condition like UTIs or kidney stones; if there is protein in the urine; and sometimes even show us evidence of cancer.” Once the vet has ruled out any medical conditions causing a pet to urinate more frequently, owners can consider behavioral training for marking, as this can help them spot abnormal bathroom behavior in the future that may be the result of a medical issue. Atiee specifically suggests that owners work with a veterinary behaviorist or reputable trainer in order to change marking behavior. “Marking is a very disruptive behavior that can lead to resentment and unnecessary expenses if marking ruins furniture, carpet, or hardwood floors, which may result in an owner altering the living situation of their pet, either moving them outside or by rehoming them,” Atiee said. “A behaviorist or trainer may be able to help alter this behavior, preserving the human-animal bond. Veterinary behaviorists have achieved board-certification in the specialty of veterinary behavior, so an owner can look for a veterinarian who is specialized in that field.” Another way to prevent dogs or cats from marking include using products that are intended to smell unappealing to pets, typically containing scents such as citrus or mint. Atiee recommends owners carefully use these products as they may be irritating to animals who are sensitive. Understanding the difference between marking and urinary health concerns when pets pee more than usual can prevent any urinary diseases from worsening. Nevertheless, both urine marking and urinary problems should be treated so that your pet can live a stress-free and healthy lifestyle.
