- A Twist On Traditional Burgers
A Twist On Traditional Burgers August 3, 2023 Share As the weather continues to rise, it's time to dust off the grill and indulge in one of summer's favorite dishes: burgers. While the thought of a classic Beef patty may come to mind, there are exciting alternatives that offer both nutrition and flavor. So, why not try a twist on traditional burgers? One option that stands out is salmon, a protein-packed, nutritionally well-rounded alternative. Not only does Salmon offer a variety of health benefits, but it also provides a unique and delicious flavor to your burger. To make things even better, Trident Seafoods Alaska Salmon Burgers are a gluten-free choice made with wild, sustainable, ocean-caught whole fillets, free from any fillers. These burgers are lightly seasoned, delivering a "just-off-the-grill" smoky flavor that will leave you craving for more. To create a truly mouthwatering twist on the traditional burger, let's explore the recipe for Alaskan Salmon Burgers with Peppered Bacon: Preparation time: 13 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients: • 1/2 cup of mayonnaise • 1 1/2 tablespoons of lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon of lemon zest • Salt • Pepper • 1 box (11.2 ounces) of Trident Seafoods Alaska Salmon Burgers • 4 slices of cheddar cheese • 4 seeded burger buns, split and toasted • 4 cups of arugula • 6 strips of peppered bacon, cooked • 12 bread-and-butter pickles, drained Instructions: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Season the mixture with salt and pepper according to your taste. Set it aside for later use. Cook the Trident Seafoods Alaska Salmon Burgers following the directions on the package. When the burgers are almost cooked through, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each burger. Cover the grill and continue cooking until the cheese has melted to perfection. While the burgers are cooking, spread the cut sides of the burger buns with the mayonnaise mixture you prepared earlier. This will add a zesty touch to your burgers. Once the buns are prepared, it's time to assemble the burgers. Start by placing a generous amount of fresh arugula on the bottom bun, creating a bed of greens. Carefully place the cooked Salmon burger on top of the arugula, allowing the flavors to meld together. Now, it's time to add a smoky and savory touch to the burger. Place three strips of cooked peppered bacon on each burger, adding a burst of flavor and texture. For an additional tangy kick, add a few bread-and-butter pickles on top of the bacon. These pickles will complement the flavors and provide a satisfying crunch. Finally, top the burger with the other half of the bun, completing the ensemble. Voila! You've successfully created a twist on traditional burgers with the Alaskan Salmon Burgers with Peppered Bacon. The combination of the salmon's smoky flavor, the richness of melted cheddar cheese, the freshness of arugula, the savory bacon, and the tangy pickles will take your taste buds on a delightful journey. - Aventura's Metamorphosis: From Retirement Haven To Bustling Multicultural City
Aventura's Metamorphosis: From Retirement Haven To Bustling Multicultural City June 9, 2023 Share Aventura, nestled between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, was incorporated as a city in 1995. Initially, it gained popularity as a retirement destination due to its tranquil atmosphere, world renowned mall, and beautiful golf course. However, as time passed, Aventura's appeal expanded beyond retirees, attracting a diverse range of residents from various backgrounds. Aventura is a city that has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years. Once a marsh land, has now evolved into a vibrant and multicultural urban center. Let's delve into the captivating journey of Aventura's metamorphosis, exploring the changing demographics and the factors that have contributed to its thriving cosmopolitan atmosphere. How It All Began Aventura's journey began in the late 1960’s when the visionary developers, Don Soffer and Eddie Lewis, recognized the untapped potential of the area. Originally named Turnberry, they renamed the site Aventura from the Spanish word for "adventure" after Lewis reportedly remarked "What an adventure this is going to be." It was a vast swampland, but they envisioned transforming this untamed wilderness into a thriving city. They began by draining the area and creating an intricate canal system, which laid the foundation for the development of a prosperous community. By the 1970’s, Aventura had started to take shape. The first step was the construction of Turnberry Isle, a luxurious golf resort that attracted the attention of affluent visitors from around the world. Capitalizing on the success of Turnberry Isle, Soffer and Lewis continued their ambitious plans by building high-rise condominiums, upscale shopping centers, and recreational facilities. The Aventura Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the United States, became a symbol of the city's progress. Demographic Shifts To understand Aventura's transformation, we can look at the data provided by the U.S. Census, which showcases the changing demographics of the city over the years. In the late 1990’s, Aventura was primarily inhabited by retirees, with a median age of around 65. The city boasted a predominantly white population, accounting for nearly 90% of its residents. However, as the new millennium approached, a shift began to take place. The 2000 Census marked the beginning of Aventura's Multicultural Evolution. The city's population had grown significantly, and its demographic makeup had become more diverse. A surge of younger families and professionals started to call Aventura home. The White population decreased to approximately 72%, while Latino residents accounted for over 20% of the population, among others. This marked the start of Aventura's Multicultural Transition. Aventura's rise as a bustling Multicultural city gained momentum throughout the following decade. The 2010 Census reported a further diversification of its population, with White residents representing approximately 63%, Latinos comprising around 20%, among others and African Americans making up roughly 9%. The Asian population also experienced a notable increase. Factors Contributing To Transformation Several key factors played a significant role in Aventura's transformation from a retirement area to a thriving Multicultural city. Location and Amenities: Aventura's prime location, situated between two major metropolitan areas, Miami and Fort Lauderdale, made it an attractive place to live for those seeking a blend of urban convenience and suburban tranquility. The city's proximity to stunning beaches, upscale shopping destinations like the Aventura Mall, and world-class dining establishments added to its allure. Economic Development and Business Opportunities: Aventura experienced substantial economic growth, attracting businesses and stimulating employment opportunities. The development of commercial and residential properties, such as luxury condominiums and gated communities, contributed to the city's urbanization and attracted a diverse range of residents. Cultural Attractions and Community Engagement: Aventura recognized the importance of fostering a vibrant cultural scene and promoting community engagement. The city hosts various events, including art festivals, music concerts, and food fairs that celebrate the diversity of its residents. These initiatives have helped create a strong sense of community and encourage Multicultural interactions. Infrastructure and Urban Planning: To accommodate its growing population, Aventura invested in infrastructure and urban planning. The city prioritized the development of parks, recreational facilities, and improved transportation systems, enhancing the quality of life for its residents and creating a conducive environment for families and young professionals. From its humble beginnings as a swampland to being incorporated in 1995, Aventura has blossomed into a remarkable city that blends luxury, natural beauty, and a strong sense of community. The vision and dedication of its founders, combined with the determination of its residents and city government, have shaped Aventura into the thriving destination it is today. Whether you're a resident or a visitor, Aventura offers an experience that seamlessly merges dreams with reality, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who venture within its boundaries. - 2022 - Year In Review: We Obviously Are Still Not Out of The Woods
2022 - Year In Review: We Obviously Are Still Not Out of The Woods By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper December 29, 2022 Share What a year 2022 has been. We started off with the Omicron Variant and now are still dealing with COVID-19. It has been a full two years this January that we have been dealing with the virus. Currently we are still hearing about case after case. I keep hearing of individuals and children traveling and ending up with COVID-19. So, the virus is still as insidious as it has ever been. The message is, if you are at risk go get the new shot. 2022 for the City started off luckily without any fiscal urgency. This would not have been possible since we were still utilizing the ARPA Economic Relief. No matter what you may think of our President he has done an amazing job. Thanks to President Biden and Congress for making sure that they address the crisis head on. Without this aid, many communities would have gone bankrupt. More importantly, many, many families would have not made it through. We obviously are still not out of the woods. Pundits and residents alike love to complain about the rampant inflation and blame it on the President. In reality, the economic crisis and inflation is worldwide. Manufacturing shutdowns, unemployment and oil shortages created world instability. Our inflation rate has been lower than other countries and we are starting to see stabilization in the GPI and CPI. This situation is not going away as many predict it will continue into 2023. The war in Ukraine began in February 2022 and added further unrest globally. Food shortages and oil prices continue to be at risk. This war has been creating added instability that has compounded inflation due to COVID-19. Worldwide supply chain issues that started during Covid continue to directly impact every industry. This includes our local government. In 2022’s City of Hallandale Beach budget, we had to make tough decisions that include raising our tax rate. While we have been righting the ship, we are still having issues with operational costs, employment challenges from the many people dropping out of the job market and cost of supplies. These costs have delayed some of our projects. Many of our pumping stations and underground infrastructure projects that were to start in October have been delayed until the first quarter of 2023. With many specialty firms in high demand, we were at least able to secure RFPs. Now it is a matter of equipment and workers. Construction is booming in Florida. With the great migration in the state and the high demand for affordable housing, many firms are focused on that construction field. Many also are addressing the other crisis from 2022, the Surfside catastrophe. This has put high pressure on our building department. Our City has been working to address staffing levels and move the department in the right direction. I am happy to report we have finally expanded our outside contracting with Broward County and Calvin Giordano which will help us make our goal of reducing permit timing. 2022 also brought us a renewal of our Police Department. 2020 and before our Department was down over 20 officers. This was truly unacceptable and a result of poor management and lack of oversight from previous Commissions and City Managers. We hired Chief Michel to lead the department and since then we have hired many new officers and filled the Gap, As of a month ago they were still 5 down, but this number was typical in Departments. Officers retire and some move to other Departments. City Manager Earle has been keenly focused on all Departments and has set up teams to address many problems. The Finance Department has been working to address a critical meter reading issue throughout our City. The major cause has been the meters. Many meters have malfunctioned. They are under warranty but due to supply chain issues we have been unable to replace them in a timely manner. They have developed a plan that was presented last meeting that will tie water plants, billing and new meters. In 2023 this plan will be implemented. 2022 also marked the City approval for PAL to move into Foster Park. This will be a welcomed change to Foster Road and a place for our children to play and learn. PAL is always looking for volunteers to help with sports and special projects. While we have had many challenges in 2022 our City is moving in the right direction. We made it through the Election Cycle and retained an important seat filled by Mike Butler and filled the other seat with Joy Adams, this ensures stability not simply for the Commission but our residents and City. We all look forward to 2023 and are here to address those challenges ahead. I look forward to continuing to serve and keeping our residents informed. As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our city a better place. Please feel free to reach out at my office at: (954) 457-1318. - What Do You Think About? A Change in Thinking Always Precedes a Change In Results
What Do You Think About? A Change in Thinking Always Precedes a Change In Results By Bryan Golden April 7, 2022 Share "Change your thoughts and you change your world." -- Norman Vincent Peale Your mind is constantly filled with thoughts. Are you aware of what you are thinking about? Are your thoughts random or are they directed by you? Do you think about what you can do or what you can't do? Are your thoughts positive or negative? The only thing you have total control over is what you think about. Successful people think about their goals and how to accomplish them. When faced with problems, they think about solutions. Their minds are constantly thinking about where they are going and how to get there. Your mind works 24 hours a day processing your thoughts. Although your mind doesn't care whether your thoughts are positive or negative, the resulting impact on your life is striking. Your mind is a magnet that attracts whatever you think about. Positive thoughts attract positive situations and people, while negative thoughts attract just the opposite. Your thoughts may be much more negative than you realize. You are influenced by your past experiences as well as by the people around you. It's common to accept negative thinking as normal. Over the years, your thoughts may have become more negative than you realize. You accept your progressively negative thoughts as ordinary because this process happens so gradually. Although your mood is directly affected by what you think about, you are rarely taught to direct, monitor, and be aware of your thoughts. Instead, you see all the wrong examples of people around you thinking negatively. A change in thinking always precedes a change in results. In order to make any changes in your life, you must first alter what you think about. Before you can change your thoughts, you must first be aware of what they are. Start making a conscious effort to monitor what you are thinking about. You want to establish a link between your thoughts and your mood. What are you thinking about when you feel good? What are you thinking about when you feel down? Next, decide how you would like to feel and what goals you would like to attain. What do you need to think about in order to accomplish this? Now you are in a position to change your thoughts as needed. Your thought patterns are well ingrained. Persistent effort is required to change them. Don’t worry if at times you revert to your old negative ways of thinking. When you catch yourself regressing, immediately adjust your thoughts to get you back on track. This system isn’t magic. It’s proven and time tested to work. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to readily get support because not enough people understand this process and how it works. However, you may receive a fair amount of criticism from those you share this with. People become comfortable with their negative thinking and don’t believe there is any reason to change. Furthermore, they don’t recognize any cause and effect relationship between their thoughts and what is happening in their lives. It’s difficult, if not impossible to convince these people otherwise. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. All you need to do is apply this concept to your life and you will see results. Don’t get frustrated. Changing any habit takes time and effort. You control your life through your thoughts. Get started today thinking about what you want to achieve rather than reasons you can’t do it. Your mind works on whatever you think about. Be vigilant to ensure your thoughts are positive. Keep at it in order to reach any destination you desire. Bryan is the author of "Dare to Live Without Limits." Contact Bryan at Bryan@columnist.com . - The Inflation Reduction Act: It Could Actually Cause Prices To Rise Further In The Years Ahead
The Inflation Reduction Act: It Could Actually Cause Prices To Rise Further In The Years Ahead By Sally C. Pipes September 8, 2022 Share Congressional Democrats are increasingly optimistic about this fall's midterm elections. They believe their recently enacted Inflation Reduction Act, especially its healthcare provisions, will win them plaudits from voters. But they could be in for a rude awakening. Contrary to lawmakers' claims, the Inflation Reduction Act won't reduce inflation or bring down drug prices for most Americans. Many voters will ultimately feel duped -- and they could take their frustrations out at the ballot box for years to come. Consider a recent analysis of the IRA by the Penn Wharton Business Model, the authors of which reported "low confidence that the legislation will have any impact on inflation." The Congressional Budget Office reached a similar conclusion, finding that the bill would have "a negligible effect" on inflation in the coming years. So much for addressing voters' chief concern. In fact, it's entirely possible that the legislation won't merely fail to reduce inflation -- it could actually cause prices to rise further in the years ahead. The new law extends generous Obamacare subsidies to middle and even high-income households through 2025, at a supposed cost of $64 billion. In reality, the three-year cost may well be higher -- those same subsidies have cost about 50% more than anticipated this year alone, according to health economist Brian Blase. If a future Congress ultimately makes the subsidies permanent -- as Democrats clearly hope to do -- the ten-year cost will balloon, pumping hundreds of billions more in deficit spending into the economy and driving up inflation. Or consider the IRA's price controls on prescription drugs. Democrats promised consumers cheaper medicines -- but the vast majority of Americans won't notice any difference at the pharmacy counter. Here's why. The price controls only apply to Medicare, so by definition, Americans with private insurance won't derive any savings from the price caps. Even seniors won't notice much change, since their out-of-pocket copays and coinsurance are set by insurance plans, not drug companies. Plus, these price controls don't kick in until 2026, and will only impact 10 drugs. That figure will steadily increase to 20 by 2029. Democrats are doing their best to downplay this inconvenient reality in the hopes of improving midterm prospects. It's a desperate, cynical strategy, and it's unlikely to work. Voters will find out soon enough that, with the IRA, they've been sold a bill of goods -- and an expensive one at that. Sally C. Pipes is President, CEO, and Thomas W. Smith Fellow in Health Care Policy at the Pacific Research Institute. Her latest book is False Premise, False Promise: The Disastrous Reality of Medicare for All (Encounter 2020). - Free Health Fair & Market For Underserved Populations
Free Health Fair & Market For Underserved Populations October 18, 2024 Share DKBmed, an integrated continuing medical education company, and Sunshine Cathedral, located at 1480 Southwest 9th Avenue, Suite#: 7 Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33315, the world’s largest progressive LGBTQ+ Church, have joined forces to launch the “Feeding Souls, Protecting Bodies: HIV Outreach in South Florida” Initiative with a FREE Health Fair and Farmer’s Market on Saturday, November 2nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Noon. This quality-of-life improvement program special event will offer Complimentary HIV Screenings and health check-ups plus free, fresh produce and pantry staples from local vendors. The “Feeding Souls, Protecting Bodies: HIV Outreach in South Florida” program aims to educate providers who serve populations with higher rates of HIV due to social determinants of health by addressing those disparities to improve patient outcomes, particularly regarding testing rates and PrEP utilization. Delivered in partnership with Sunshine Cathedral, the program is designed to reach underserved communities in South Florida through a series of Fresh Farmer’s Markets and Health Fairs, providing FREE access to nutritious food and health screenings. Sunshine Cathedral’s current food sharing ministry reaches 750+ people each week through a Wednesday morning food pantry and weekend distribution; those they reach are 80% BIPOC, largely senior citizens, queer-identifying, lower-income, and/or formerly unhoused veteran's. While the incidence of HIV in the United States has been declining and progress in HIV Prevention is being made, the progress is not uniform, and significant disparities based on race, ethnicity, and region exist. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida, specifically, has one of the nation’s highest rates of HIV diagnosis, with 21.7 per 100,000, compared with national rate of 12.7 per 100,000.4 AIDSVu relates that In Fort Lauderdale, the rate is 36 per 100,000.5. Additionally, according to Feeding America, the Fort Lauderdale area has a significant population of people with food insecurity. Food insecurity is associated with poor nutrition, chronic disease, and lack of healthcare access. Between 25% and 80% of people living with HIV experience food insecurity, and they have significantly worse HIV-specific health outcomes. Screening people who attend a Food Pantry/Farmer’s Market may identify people living with HIV who are either unaware of their diagnosis or not engaged in care. “By concentrating and targeting our efforts on Fort Lauderdale’s underserved population, we hope to help break the barriers to care for people who have inadequate access to food and, possibly, unstable housing and employment,” said David Serota, MD, MSC, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “Initiatives like the ‘Feeding Souls, Protecting Bodies: HIV Outreach’ program allow us to close the gaps in HIV care and move us closer towards ending the HIV epidemic.” At the “Feeding Souls” Farmer’s Market, medical staff from Holy Cross Health will be on-site to offer health education, pamphlets (in English, Spanish, and Creole) and free screenings for HIV, as well as Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Diabetes, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis. Referral coordinators will also be present to help patients schedule follow-up visits with healthcare providers. Event visitors are encouraged to engage with the various partners through a fun health passport game.
