  • FREE Microchips Available: This Could Mean The Difference For You & Your Pet

FREE Microchips Available: This Could Mean The Difference For You & Your Pet October 20, 2022 Share Thanks to a recent Grant from the ASPCA and Subaru, The Humane Society Of Broward County will be providing 200 FREE Microchips to pet owners who visit the shelter’s Vaccine Clinic and purchase a Vaccine Package. The clinic is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312. The hours are: Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. with no appointment necessary and it is closed daily from 11:40 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Thanks to technology, a Microchip is the size of a grain of rice and administered under the skin between a pet’s shoulder blades. When a Chip is properly registered it contains the owner’s contact information. Should your pet become lost and taken to a vet’s office or shelter, a scanner is used to see if the animal has a chip and then the owner can be contacted. It is important to understand that a Microchip is not a tracking device. It is also imperative that if you move or change your phone number, that you update the contact information with the Microchip Company. Microchipped pets are reunited with their owners frequently. In April 2019, a 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd named Cedar was reunited with her Southwest Ranches family after being stolen from her home at the age of four months. Found injured in a ditch by law enforcement in Colorado, Cedar was taken to a vet office where a Registered Chip was located by the scanner. She was flown home after she recovered. Should your pet become lost, a Microchip could mean the difference between being reunited quickly or waiting for days, weeks or months in a shelter, rescue or someone’s home hoping you will find your lost pet. According to the AVMA – American Veterinary Medical Association’s website, “A study of more than 7,700 stray animals at animal shelters showed that dogs without Microchips were returned to their owners 21.9% of the time, whereas Microchipped dogs were returned to their owners 52.2% of the time. Cats without Microchips were reunited with their owners only 1.8% of the time, whereas Microchipped cats went back home 38.5% of the time. Lord et al, JAVMA, July 15, 2009” For Microchipped animals that weren't returned to their owners, most of the time it was due to incorrect owner information or no owner information in the Microchip Registry Database – so don't forget to register and keep your information updated. Microchipping is crucial to your pet’s well-being. In addition, a collar and ID Tag are a visible sign of identification and should be kept on your pet at all times. That way, if your dog or cat wanders from home and is found, you can be reunited quickly. The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, Non-Profit Organization that is not affiliated with any national or local group with a similar name. The shelter’s programs and services are made possible by the generosity of those that want to make a difference for animals and people. • Celebrate Mom, Every Family’s Secret Sauce, At Bae Korean Grill This Mother’s Day | sun-times

Celebrate Mom, Every Family’s Secret Sauce, At Bae Korean Grill This Mother’s Day South Florida Sun Times May 7, 2026 This Mother's Day Weekend, Bae Korean Grill Will Fill Its Dining Room With The Sizzle Of Premium Meats Over Japanese Charcoal, The Aroma Of Bold Korean Sauces, And The Energy Of A Celebration Built For The Occasion. To celebrate mom, every family’s secret sauce, Bae Korean Grill, an upscale Korean barbecue dining experience featuring State-Of-The-Art Shinpo grill tables inside Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, will offer exclusive chef-driven specials and an elevated dining experience worthy of the occasion. Mother's Day specials are available throughout the full weekend, giving families every opportunity to gather around the Shinpo grill tables and celebrate the women who matter most. Mother’s Day specials include: Korean Braised Short Ribs ($65) feature Slow-Braised Beef with Daikon, Potatoes, and Carrots in a savory Soy-Garlic Reduction: a hearty, deeply flavored dish built for sharing. Pan-Seared Cured Halibut ($40) is plated with Ramps Kosho, Fresno Kosho, Nitsuke Sauce, Wilted Spinach, and Pickled Ramp Stems, delivering a refined balance of brightness and umami. “This Mother’s Day, we’re redefining the dining experience by offering something immersive and memorable,” said Eric Douglas, Partner at BOL Hospitality Group. “Korean BBQ is about connection: cooking together and creating meaningful moments that make the celebration feel as special as mom deserves.” Bae Korean Grill is a proven guest favorite, having just claimed the 2026 People's Choice Award for Best Bite at the Capital One Orange Bowl Food & Wine Celebration, a guest-voted honor the restaurant has now earned for the third consecutive year. Recognized as one of South Florida’s premier culinary events, the Orange Bowl Food & Wine Celebration brings together award-winning chefs, acclaimed restaurants, and distinguished beverage partners for a night that blends exceptional flavors with a vibrant party atmosphere, with special guest appearances. Proceeds from the event support Orange Bowl Cares, the Orange Bowl Committee’s year-round schedule of community programming, youth sports initiatives and education efforts that positively impact thousands of South Florida families each year. Throughout the evening, attendees cast their votes to determine the top culinary standouts of the night, while a panel of special guest judges determine specialty awards. The winning dish, the Rock Shrimp Roll, was created by Executive Chef Xavier. Built on a Brioche Toast toasted with Clarified Butter and a Garlic Infusion, the dish features a Rock Shrimp Spicy Salad with Sriracha Aioli, pickled Carrots and Celery, White Sturgeon Caviar, and Lobster Roe transformed into a Bottarga-Style Powder, Salt-Cured and dehydrated to intensify oceanic depth. The inspiration: a classic New England Lobster Roll reimagined as a refined, two-bite experience with Asian influences. Bae also showcased the Wagyu Tacos: Crispy Gyoza Taco Shells filled with Wagyu Picanha marinated in Soy Sauce and finished with a Korean BBQ Glaze, cooked over Japanese charcoal for distinctive smoky depth. The tacos are garnished with a Pickled Daikon Pico de Gallo of Fresh Cilantro and Toasted Sesame Seeds. Chef Xavier developed the dish as a reinterpretation of the traditional Mexican taco through a Korean lens, replacing the tortilla with a crisp dumpling wrapper shell. “Winning the People's Choice Award for Best Bite for the third year in a row is a true honor,” said Hai Nguyen, Partner at BOL Hospitality Group. “To be recognized by the very community we serve makes this honor exceptionally special. It reflects the passion and creativity that Executive Chef Xavier and our entire team bring to every dish. We invite everyone to come celebrate the mothers in their lives with us this weekend and experience the flavors that keep earning that recognition.” Bae Korean Grill's menu spans Beef, Poultry, Pork, Seafood, and Vegetarian options, all prepared at State-Of-The-Art Shinpo grill tables that place the cooking experience directly in guests' hands. Whether the occasion calls for a full Korean barbecue spread or a seat at the bar, Bae delivers a memorable evening from the first bite to the last. The BAE Bar offers an extensive selection of spirits, wine, and beer alongside a menu of handcrafted cocktails designed to complement the bold flavors of the kitchen. On Fridays and Saturdays, some of South Florida's favorite DJs bring an energetic soundtrack to the dining room, making Bae equally suited for a celebratory dinner or a night out with friends. • John Giraldo Is Helping FPL Build A Stronger Miami | sun-times

John Giraldo Is Helping FPL Build A Stronger Miami South Florida Sun Times Mar 19, 2026 Long Before He Began Helping Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) Strengthen Communities Across South Florida, John Giraldo Was Focused On Building Stability Through Perseverance. With Little More Than A Minivan For Shelter, Giraldo Carved Out The Life He Wanted, Working Multiple Jobs, Saving Every Dollar And Holding Fast To The Belief That Success Means Giving Back. “I was under 21 and couldn’t even sign a rental contract,” he recalls. “So, I took out the back seat of my van and lived in it.” Every day was about survival, but also about hope. That mindset would define Giraldo’s career at Florida Power & Light Company and his commitment to helping others overcome obstacles of their own. At 33, he went back to school to pursue his passion for engineering, determined to build a more stable future and a way to give back. “I was always eager to learn, always goal-oriented,” he says. “I knew education was the key to changing my life.” While earning his degree, Giraldo joined FPL as an intern. After graduating and joining the company full time, he quickly found his calling in the Storm Secure Underground Program (SSUP), where his personal values aligned closely with the program’s mission. SSUP, which began as a pilot and now includes over 3,200 completed projects, is transforming how Florida prepares for hurricanes by converting overhead neighborhood power lines to underground lines. “Underground lines mean fewer outages, faster restoration and safer communities,” he explains. “These are benefits that resonate deeply with someone who knows the importance of stability firsthand.” Neighborhoods are selected for the program based on criteria approved by the Florida Public Service Commission and designed to prioritize areas that can most benefit from undergrounding. By moving power lines underground, FPL is reducing outages from wind, debris and falling trees, and delivering outstanding reliability not just during storms but year-round. “From the start, I was involved in the SSUP pilot, including designing the program, reaching out to customers and figuring out how to deliver real value,” he says. “It wasn’t just a job. It was about making my own community stronger.” For more than 25 years, Miami has been Giraldo’s home and a place he feels deeply responsible for serving. “I’m not just serving customers—I’m serving my neighbors, my friends, the people I see every day,” he says. As lead project manager for SSUP, Giraldo oversees more than 100 projects at a time, coordinating teams, managing resources and navigating the challenges of moving overhead power lines underground in one of the nation’s most storm-prone regions. “We’re building a grid that’s proactive, not reactive,” Giraldo explains. “Instead of rebuilding after every storm, we’re creating infrastructure that will last for generations.” The work is complex and requires balancing technical demands, customer needs and the realities of South Florida’s dense urban landscape. But the payoff is clear. During the 2024 Hurricane Season, FPL’s underground lines performed up to 15 times better than their overhead counterparts, helping keep the lights on for thousands of families and businesses when it mattered most. Day-to-day, these underground lines perform 50% better than overhead lines, delivering consistent reliability. For Giraldo, the most rewarding moments often come after a storm, a lesson he learned early in life. “I’ve seen the relief when homes come back online, small business owners reopen and neighbors come together to support our crews,” he shares. “Those moments remind me why this work matters.” “There’s something meaningful about restoring power after a storm, especially when you know what’s at stake for families, businesses and hospitals. It’s about taking care of your community when it matters most,” says Giraldo. That commitment to service extends beyond Giraldo’s role at FPL. Deeply rooted in the community he serves and inspired by an early commitment to give back, he is also actively involved in philanthropic initiatives that support health, education and youth development across South Florida. For the past five years, Giraldo has supported the FCC Corporate Soccer Tournament, a program focused on empowering youth through physical activity, emotional wellness and violence prevention. He also volunteers as a math tutor for high school and college students, helping them build confidence, overcome academic barriers and reach their goals. Through his leadership at FPL and his work in the community, Giraldo says he is trying to build a more resilient South Florida. And when he looks at Miami’s skyline today, it’s also a reminder of how far both he and the city have come. Previous Next
