  • What's In My Bag? An Expert Dermatologist's On-The-Go Essentials | sun-times

What's In My Bag? An Expert Dermatologist's On-The-Go Essentials BPT Jul 24, 2025 When You're Constantly Juggling Work, School, And Home Responsibilities, It's Easy To Overlook Your Own Well-Being. But Neglecting Self-Care Can Quickly Lead To Burnout, Ultimately Throwing Your Entire Routine Off Track. Dr. Gabriela Soza, Manhattan Board-Certified Dermatologist and mother of two young children, knows firsthand how challenging self-care can be when you're on-the-go. That's why she recommends preparing a bag to carry all your essentials while you're out and about. But, what counts as an essential item? While those exact items may vary from person to person, Soza offers an easy organizational system. "When organizing my must-haves, I tend to break them down into three core categories: health, wellness and skincare to freshen up throughout the day," she said. "Once you've curated your items, use a removable bag insert or pouch to store them. That way, whether you choose a tote bag, backpack or large purse, you can easily transfer your essentials from bag to bag." Read on to learn about Soza's personal "must-have" recommendations. 1. Health Hand sanitizer: As a healthcare professional, Dr. Soza knows firsthand about the importance of hand hygiene. That's why she emphasizes the importance of keeping hand sanitizer to reduce the risk of getting sick or spreading germs. Soza recommends finding sanitizers that also moisturize your skin to prevent your hands from drying out, like Touchland's Hydrating Hand Sanitizer. Water bottle: Hydration is the key to good health, including healthy skin. To prevent dehydration and ensure you have access to water all day, Soza suggests carrying a water bottle in your bag. Pick out a water bottle that has a secure top so you can throw it into your bag without worrying that it will spill over. Fill it up before you leave the house and refill it as needed. 2. Skincare SPF: Whether you have an extensive or bare-bones skincare routine, SPF products should always be on your essentials list. Even if you put on sunscreen before leaving the house, you'll need to reapply throughout the day. Dr. Soza's personal pick is Neocutis Réactive+. This antioxidant serum offers broad spectrum SPF 45 to protect against skin-aging free radicals and harmful sun damage that causes premature skin aging. "For over a decade, I've been continuously impressed by the consistent efficacy of Neocutis products," said Soza. "As a dermatologist who constantly evaluates skincare for both myself and my patients, I appreciate that Neocutis products, such as Réactive+, are research-backed and actively support the skin's collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, all while protecting the skin from free-radicals and harmful sun damage." Eye cream: The delicate skin under your eyes can have trouble retaining moisture. To keep your under-eyes hydrated throughout the day and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, make sure to include an eye cream in your essentials. Choose a hydrating and brightening cream like Neocutis Lumiére® Firm as a midday pick-me-up. Its advanced aging formulation moisturizes delicate skin while also improving firmness, elasticity and texture. Lumiére® Firm is also designed to reduce puffiness, making it the perfect solution for moms on-the-go who need a quick and effective refresh. Facial mist: During a hot day, it's hard to keep your makeup looking good while beating the heat. That's why it's a smart idea to keep a facial mist on hand to freshen up! Soza suggests finding a mist with skincare benefits that can be applied throughout the day like Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray. With just a few spritzes your skin will be soothed, letting you look and feel your best from morning to evening. Lip balm: Lip balm isn't just for hydrating your lips. Of course, its main purpose is to keep your lips moisturized and protected, but it's an incredibly versatile weapon in your on-the-go arsenal. Soza's "do-it-all" lip balm is Aquaphor as it can also tame flyaways, hydrate dry cuticles, and quickly fix a dry skin patch. 3. Wellness Headphones: Physical health items aren't the only essentials you need to pack. Dr. Soza advises keeping a pair of headphones in your bag to give yourself a private escape. It's a great way to center yourself with music, podcasts or audiobooks, even in public places. For example, she listens to music to relax when she's commuting or in between patients. Immunity stick packs: If you haven't used immunity stick packs before, it's time to start! As a new mom, Dr. Soza knows how important it is for moms to bolster their immune system, especially if they have small children. She advises searching for your favorite flavored, pre-portioned stick packs that have vitamin C, electrolytes, zinc and antioxidants to help ward off colds year-round. What's in your bag? No matter how busy your day is, you can give yourself the tools you need to support your health, wellness and skin. Using Soza's essential recommendations, you can ensure you always have what you need to take care of yourself, even during your busiest seasons. Sponsored by Merz Aesthetics. • 8 Ways To Help Protect Your Vision Right Now | sun-times

8 Ways To Help Protect Your Vision Right Now By Feature Impact Jun 25, 2026 As You Get Older, Your Risk For Some Eye Diseases May Increase. However, There Are Steps You Can Take To Keep Your Eyes Healthy – And It Starts With Taking Care Of Your Overall Health. Set yourself up for a lifetime of seeing your best with these eight tips from the experts at the National Eye Institute in honor of Healthy Vision Month: 1. Find an eye doctor you trust. Many eye diseases don’t have any early symptoms, so you could have a problem and not know it. An eye doctor can help you stay on top of your eye health. Find an eye doctor you trust by asking friends and family if they like their doctors. You can also check with your health insurance plan to find eye doctors near you. 2. Ask how often you need a dilated eye exam. Getting a dilated eye exam is the single best thing you can do for your eye health. It’s the only way to find eye diseases early, when they’re easier to treat – and before they cause vision loss. Your eye doctor will decide how often you need an exam based on your risk for eye diseases. 3. Add more movement to your day. Physical activity can lower your risk for health conditions that can affect your vision, like Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. If you have trouble finding time for physical activity, try building it into other activities. Walk around while you’re on the phone, do push-ups or stretch while you watch TV or dance while you’re doing chores. Anything that gets your heart pumping counts. 4. Get your family talking about eye health history. Some eye diseases – like Glaucoma and age-related Macular Degeneration – can run in families. While it may not be the most exciting topic of conversation, talking about your family health history can help everyone stay healthy. The next time you’re chatting with relatives, ask if anyone knows about eye problems in your family. Be sure to share what you learn with your eye doctor to see if you need to take steps to lower your risk. 5. Step up your healthy eating game. Eating healthy foods helps prevent health conditions – like Diabetes or High Blood Pressure – that can put you at risk for eye problems. Eat right for your sight by adding more eye-healthy foods to your plate, such as dark, leafy greens like Spinach, Kale and Collard Greens, and fish high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids like Halibut, Salmon or Tuna. 6. Make a habit of wearing your sunglasses – even on cloudy days. The sun’s UV rays can not only harm your skin, but the same goes for your eyes. However, wearing sunglasses that block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB radiation can protect your eyes and lower your risk for cataracts. 7. Stay on top of long-term health conditions like Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. Diabetes and High Blood Pressure can increase your risk for some eye diseases, like Glaucoma. If you have Diabetes or High Blood Pressure, ask your doctor about steps you can take to manage your condition and lower your risk of vision loss. 8. If you smoke, make a plan to quit. Quitting smoking is good for your entire body, including your eyes. Kicking the habit can help lower your risk for eye diseases like Macular Degeneration and Cataracts. Quitting smoking is hard, but it’s possible – and a plan can help. Test your eye health knowledge with a quick quiz and find more vision resources at: https://nei.nih.gov/hvm . In true Zoetic Stage style, we will explore the endless possibilities of storytelling with a treasure trove of 'magic to do'!" The lineup for the 2026-27 Theater Up Close series is as follows: Zoetic Stage and Adrienne Arsht Center present God Of Carnage By Yasmina Reza Translated by Christopher Hampton Directed by Stuart Meltzer Thursday, November 5th, 2026 - Sunday, November 22nd, 2026 “Deliciously savage satire.” – The Guardian Described as a "comedy of manners…without the manners," this Broadway hit examines the fragile veneer of civility in American society. The play centers on two sets of well-to-do parents who meet in a Brooklyn apartment to discuss a playground altercation between their 11-year-old sons, one of whom hit the other with a stick, knocking out two teeth. What begins as a polite, civilized conversation to resolve the situation quickly devolves into a night of name-calling, physical altercations and alcohol-fueled hysteria. More relevant today than when it was first written, the play holds up a mirror to modern society, dealing with the fragility of social etiquette, political polarization and the constant, distracting nature of modern technology. Cast completely with local actors and designers, Zoetic’s first play of the season promises to be as enlightening as it is entertaining. Zoetic Stage and Adrienne Arsht Center present The Inheritance, Part Two - Florida Premiere By Matthew Lopez Directed by Stuart Meltzer Thursday, January 7th, 2027 - Sunday, January 24th, 2027 “Zoetic Stage’s production leaves a lasting impression, especially in today’s atmosphere.” - Artburst Miami After the artistic, critical and box office success of last season’s production of The Inheritance Part 1, Zoetic Stage will continue the story that has brought so many communities in the region together. This emotional conclusion to the Tony Award-winning epic drama focuses on the aftermath of the AIDS crisis and the search for legacy among gay men in modern New York. It follows Eric Glass and Toby Darling as they confront self-destruction, addiction and the necessity of healing, resulting in a moving journey of hope and transformation. This production will bring back the multicultural cast from Part 1. Adrienne Arsht Center and Zoetic Stage present Pippin Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz Book by Roger O. Hirson Directed by Stuart Meltzer Thursday, March 11th, 2027 - Sunday, April 4th, 2027 Winner of four Tony Awards, Stephen Schwartz's iconic musical masterpiece follows the young prince Pippin, son of Charlemagne, who journeys to find personal significance, or a "corner of the sky." Guided by a theatrical Leading Player, he explores war, lust, politics and ultimately love. A glorious journey filled with amazing music from the composer of Wicked. Zoetic Stage and Adrienne Arsht Center present John Proctor Is The Villain By Kimberly Belflower Directed by Stuart Meltzer Thursday, April 29th, 2027 - Sunday, May 16th, 2027 “An American classic in the making.” – New York Theater Guide Reimagining Arthur Miller's The Crucible through the eyes of modern teenage girls during the #MeToo era, the play follows a group of students in rural Georgia as they grapple with their teacher's assertion that John Proctor is a hero, while simultaneously dealing with local sex scandals that mirror the events in the Miller play. This award-winning Broadway play uses intelligence, humor and contemporary language to make serious points about patriarchy and female agency. Certain performances will feature after-show talk backs focusing on themes introduced in the play, including teacher-student relationships, peer manipulation, religious pressures and the #MeToo movement. *All programs, artists, ticket prices, availability, dates and times are subject to change without notice. • Walk Your Way To Better Health

Walk Your Way To Better Health By Family Features May 15, 2024 Share A walk is not just good for your body, it's also good for your soul. Physical activity, like walking, is one of the best ways to reduce stress and boost your mood. However, reports show walking rates are declining steadily in the United States. On average, 1 out of every 4 U.S. adults sits for longer than eight hours each day, per research from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, which can have negative consequences on Physical and Mental Health. Regular exercise improves mood, boosts energy and can even help you sleep better. Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy. Consider this advice from the American Heart Association, which has worked for decades to promote policies and strategies that make it easier for communities to get and stay active. One example is National Walking Day, established by the organization to encourage people to move more throughout the day so they can feel, think, sleep and live better. Indeed, adding more movement can benefit your body and mind in numerous ways, such as: Lowering disease risk. Getting the recommended amount of physical activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate, 75 minutes of vigorous or a combination of those activities per week) is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression, according to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services. Increasing sunlight exposure. Outdoor exercise is an easy way to get moving and take in the sunlight, which can improve mood, boost immunity and help you get some Vitamin D. Spending time outdoors is a no-cost option and has been shown to reduce Stress, promote a sense of belonging and improve mood. Improving Cognitive and Mental Function. Physical activity keeps your mind sharp now and later. Studies show higher fitness levels are linked to better attention, learning, working memory and problem solving. What's more, a study published in the "British Journal of Sports Medicine" shows people who get the recommended amount of physical activity are less likely to develop Depression. Living longer. Healthy life expectancy can be positively impacted by increasing activity. According to research published in the "American Journal of Epidemiology," swapping just 30 minutes of sitting with low-intensity physical activity reduced risk of death by 17%. Get Inspired to Get Moving A little creativity can go a long way to make your walk more fun. You might think of walking as a solo activity, but a companion makes it even more enjoyable. Ask colleagues, friends or family to join you. A walk is a perfect excuse to take a break from a long day at your desk. If you work remotely, take a conference call on the go or plan your walk as a reward for completing a project. Use your walk as a guilt-free opportunity to listen to a new audiobook or create a walking soundtrack of your favorite upbeat music. Mix up your scenery. Taking new routes keeps your walks interesting and helps prevent boredom from traveling the same predictable path. If you need an extra nudge to get moving, a pet may help you get fit. Dog parents are more likely to reach their fitness goals than those without canine companions. In fact, according to the "Journal of Physical Activity & Health," dog parents are 34% more likely to fit in 150 minutes of walking a week than non-dog owners. Pets can also help lower Stress, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Blood Sugar and boost your overall happiness and well-being. Get moving to reduce your stress and step into better health. • Sufrat Mediterranean Grill - Bringing Big Flavors And A Sense Of Family | sun-times

Sufrat Mediterranean Grill - Bringing Big Flavors And A Sense Of Family South Florida Sun Times Oct 22, 2025 Sufrat Mediterranean Grill – An Expanding, Family-Owned Mediterranean Concept – Has Quietly Become A South Florida Institution As Much For Its Flavorful Menu, Authentic Recipes And Spirited Cocktail Program As Its Lively Atmosphere. Founded By A Trio Of Brothers Who Hail From Jordan, The Concept For Sufrat Is Rooted In A Simple But Powerful Idea: Food Tastes Best When It’s Shared With Loved Ones Around A Table. Since Opening The Original Location In Pembroke Pines Five Years Ago, Sufrat Has Grown From A Family Passion Project Into A Trio Of Successful Restaurants Including Locations In Miami Beach (2022) And Doral (2023). And 2025 Is Turning Into A Banner Year For The Brand, With The Pines Location Celebrating Its Five-Year-Anniversary, Doral Its One-Year Anniversary And Exciting Expansion News Afoot. For the Altillawi brothers, Sufrat’s story isn’t just about expansion, it's about preserving the flavors, memories and spirit of home that first inspired the concept. “Our menu is a love letter to my mother’s kitchen,” says co-founder Tamer Altillawi. “Every guest was always treated like family, and no one ever left hungry. She gave me her recipes and inspired me to cook for others. With Sufrat, we want every guest to feel like they’ve been invited into our home – to sit at the table, share a meal, and experience true hospitality.” After moving to the U.S. at 19, Tamer worked in a Cuban cafeteria in Miami, where he learned Spanish and honed his cooking skills. Yet at home, he would return to his roots, preparing his mother’s recipes for friends and his brothers around the apartment table. That natural sense of hosting, paired with his culinary heritage, became the foundation for Sufrat. The word Sufrat loosely translates to “feast” and embodies the kind of abundant dining table Tamer knows well; where family and friends gather, pass plates, share stories and make memories. Like his home, the heart of Sufrat is the kitchen, where every dish is made in-house from scratch and designed for sharing. Standout starters include Falafel $7, Kibbeh $8, Grape Leaves $7 and Chargrilled Octopus $20, glazed with a tangy Mediterranean Herb Sauce and served on a bed of fries topped with creamy, harissa-spiced labneh. The Dip Sampler $16 features velvety Hummus drizzled with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Za’atar, Tangy Labneh, Smoky Baba Ghanoush Slow-Roasted over Charcoal, and Muhammara made with Roasted Red Peppers and Toasted Walnuts — all served with freshly baked pita. An array of fresh soups, salads and sandwiches $10–$13 make Sufrat a versatile option for lunch or dinner. Platters are all served with two sides, working great as a standalone entree as a sharing item. Not-to-be-missed among the 12+ options are Lamb Chops; the Sufrat mixed grill and the Delight Mix, cubed Ribeye, Lamb and Chicken sauteed with Onions and the brand’s proprietary Secret Black Sauce. Large groups or those looking for the ultimate culinary showstopper should look no further than Sufrat’s dramatically-presented family combos, all served gloriously upon a copper Persian tray stand. At Sufrat there’s no better way to transform any group meal into a festive feast. The Family Combo $90 includes a large Greek Salad, Basmati Rice, four Chicken Kebab Skewers, two Beef Kebab Skewers, two Kafta Skewers, and a portion of Chicken Shawarma. The Sufrat Combo $109 features Basmati Rice, Yellow or Angel Hair, a large Greek Salad, three Chicken Kebab Skewers, three Beef Kebab Skewers, two Kofta Skewers, three Lamb Chops, a portion of Chicken Shawarma, and a portion of Beef Shawarma. Guests can also customize their own mixed grill combo for $90. To finish the meal, Sufrat offers house-made desserts that guarantee the perfect sweet finish to any feast. A must-try is a traditional Arabic Knafeh, consisting of thin shredded phyllo layered with cheese, baked to perfection then topped with attar syrup and nuts. Also on offer, everything from Greek and Turkish Baklava and Nutella Walnut Pie. Of course, dessert is best enjoyed with a bracing cup of Turkish coffee! Speaking of beverages, Sufrat’s spirited cocktail program features inventive libations such as the Turkish Delight, Jordanian Sunrise, Lebanese Paradise, Moroccan Mojito and Istanbul Fresh, each carefully designed to pair with the bold, fresh flavors of the kitchen. Beyond its flavorful menu and creative cocktails, Sufrat has become a true destination, the kind of place where every night feels like a celebration. Whether it’s a relaxed family dinner, a romantic date, or a lively night out with friends, the restaurant’s spirited programming keeps guests coming back for more. On weekends, belly dancers light up the dining room as music fills the air and lines form out the door, while weeknights draw regulars for happy hour, themed events, and spontaneous celebrations. Each location buzzes with the kind of warmth and energy that turns dinner into an experience. The atmosphere is matched by design that’s both modern and rooted in tradition. Warm lighting, rich textures, and thoughtful Mediterranean-inspired décor create a space that feels like a contemporary home by the sea – inviting, stylish, and meant for gathering. Open layouts encourage connection, conversation, and the shared joy that defines the Sufrat experience. So what’s next for Sufrat? Expansion plans are in process with news on that front coming soon. “We’re so blessed to be where we are and to enjoy the fandom we’ve gained and look forward to what is to come,” adds Tamer, who spends most of his time bopping between all three locations with his younger brother Ahmad (Don) Altillawi overseeing Pembroke Pines and Samer Altillawi at the Miami Beach store. The saying might be “it takes a village” but at Sufrat, it takes a family. • Thanksgiving Saved - Sol Goldman Charitable Trust And The Met Council Feed 105,000 N.Y.C. First Responders And Food Insecure New Yorkers | sun-times

Thanksgiving Saved - Sol Goldman Charitable Trust And The Met Council Feed 105,000 N.Y.C. First Responders And Food Insecure New Yorkers Jewish Connection News Dec 18, 2025 The Met Council Made Sure Tens Of Thousands Of New Yorkers Were Able To Sit Down To A Real Thanksgiving Meal This Year, And That Only Happened Because Of The Extraordinary And Repeated Generosity Of The Jane Goldman And The Sol Goldman Charitable Trust. Their Support Did Not Just Help, It Saved Thanksgiving For Families And For Thousands Of First Responder Households Across The City. This year’s Thanksgiving effort came at a moment of real crisis. Because of the SNAP shutdown, the Met Council’s warehouse was almost completely empty after we provided more than one million dollars of emergency food in just ten days to keep pantries open. At the exact moment New York was facing a cliff, The Jane Goldman and the Sol Goldman Charitable Trust stepped in. They replenished our warehouse. They restored our ability to operate. They made sure New Yorkers in need were not forgotten. Their generosity made all of this possible and we are grateful to them again and again. Because of the Jane and the Sol Goldman Charitable Trust’s timely intervention, the Met Council was able to launch one of the largest Thanksgiving operations in our history. More than one hundred twenty distribution events took place across all five boroughs and ultimately more than one hundred five thousand first responders and food insecure New Yorkers received full Thanksgiving packages. We saw police officers, firefighters, EMS workers, nurses and hospital staff picking up food for their own families after serving ours. Every single one of those moments was thanks to the Jane Goldman and the Sol Goldman Charitable Trust. Their generosity stretched across every borough and touched every community partner. Families received complete Thanksgiving packages filled with the foods New Yorkers count on for the holiday. Turkeys, corn, green beans, carrots, pumpkin, kidney beans, peanut butter, tuna, milk, rice, spaghetti, turkey stuffing mix, farina, cranberries, yams, applesauce, raisins and Nutrigrain bars. These were not symbolic handouts. These were full, dignified meals. The kind of support that lets parents bring home real Thanksgiving food even as grocery prices continue climbing. Once again, we are grateful to the Jane and the Sol Goldman Charitable Trust for making that possible for tens of thousands of families. “Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Jane Goldman and the Sol Goldman Charitable Trust, families all across New York, including our first responders, were able to celebrate Thanksgiving this year,” said David G. Greenfield, CEO of Met Council. “When our warehouse was nearly depleted because of SNAP cuts, The Jane and the Sol Goldman Charitable Trust stepped in at the exact moment New Yorkers needed them most. Their generosity made sure no one was left behind. We cannot thank them enough.” The Sol Goldman Charitable Trust has a long record of standing by New Yorkers whenever they are needed. Their support this Thanksgiving continued that tradition in a profound way. They ensured that police, fire and EMS workers could bring home a full holiday meal to their own families. They ensured that seniors, working families and vulnerable households continued receiving the food they rely on. Their generosity is felt across the entire city. This Thanksgiving operation was also a powerful extension of Met Council’s year-round food network. Met Council remains the nation’s largest free provider of kosher and halal food. With the cost of living rising, the need continues to grow. Because of generous partners like the Sol Goldman Charitable Trust, Met Council continues to meet that need with dignity and compassion. Met Council also provides a full range of services beyond food, including affordable housing, domestic violence support, senior programs and workforce development. These programs strengthen communities across New York and are supported by partnerships with government leaders, community agencies and philanthropic partners. We are especially grateful to Jane Goldman and the Sol Goldman Charitable Trust whose generosity has once again transformed lives across the city. Previous Next
