  • Stopping The ‘Silent Killer:’ How To Check, Prevent And Manage High Blood Pressure | sun-times

Stopping The ‘Silent Killer:’ How To Check, Prevent And Manage High Blood Pressure By Feature Impact Jul 23, 2026 High Blood Pressure Poses Significant Health Risks For People Of All Ages, But There Are Effective Ways To Both Prevent And Manage This “Silent Killer” By Working With A Health Care Professional To Make Lifestyle Changes. Hypertension, also known as High Blood Pressure, is when the force of blood flowing through blood vessels is consistently too high. This condition makes the heart work harder than normal and can damage arteries, increasing the risk of Heart Disease, Stroke and other health problems. High Blood Pressure is the leading risk factor for Stroke and heart conditions such as Coronary Artery Disease, Heart Failure and Atrial Fibrillation. Strengthening evidence also shows High Blood pressure is linked to risk of cognitive decline and Dementia, which is why the American Heart Association is working to increase awareness and encourage people to manage Blood Pressure. Protect your heart and brain both now and in the future with this information and wellness advice. Who Can Have High Blood Pressure? Anyone can develop High Blood Pressure, which is why it’s encouraged for everyone – in all age groups, including children and young adults – to have their Blood Pressure checked at annual physicals or wellness checkups. For those with a history of High Blood Pressure or risk factors for developing the condition, more frequent measurements may be recommended. Major risk factors for High Blood Pressure include excess weight, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, smoking, lack of physical activity, alcohol consumption and a diet high in sodium and low in potassium. Nearly half of adults in the U.S. have High Blood Pressure and many don’t even know it. Of those with High Blood Pressure, about 75% don’t have the condition under control. Because it typically shows no symptoms, it’s often called a “silent killer.” How is Blood Pressure Checked? To get the best Blood Pressure reading, sit in a chair with support for your back with both feet flat on the ground. Use a validated, automatic, cuff-style, upper-arm monitor. Remove clothing over the arm that will be used and rest for at least 5 minutes. Extend your arm and support it at heart level while staying quiet and still then take multiple readings and record the results. Aim to measure at the same time each day. For most adults, a normal Blood Pressure reading should be less than 120/80 mm Hg. What Happens After a High Blood Pressure Diagnosis? Recognizing and taking quick action to control High Blood Pressure can significantly lower the risk of severe health consequences, including Heart Attack and Stroke, and improve overall health. If you’ve been diagnosed with High Blood Pressure, work with a health care professional to design a treatment plan that works for you. It may include lifestyle changes to your diet or activity levels or medication. How Can High Blood Pressure Be Prevented or Managed? Preventing High Blood Pressure is possible. Talk with a health care professional to create a plan that works for you, which may include small steps like eating a heart-healthy diet, staying active and maintaining a healthy weight. For those diagnosed with High Blood Pressure, maintaining a healthy weight by staying active (at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week) and eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains are important. Even losing 5% of your weight can help improve Blood Pressure. It’s also important to reduce or avoid alcohol consumption and tobacco use. Consider stress-reducing activities, including meditation, breathing control or Yoga. For many individuals, adhering to prescribed medications is essential to effectively control Blood Pressure and reduce the risk of serious health complications. • Beat the Heat, Hollywood: Stay Cool and Stay Safe | sun-times

Beat the Heat, Hollywood: Stay Cool and Stay Safe Jul 30, 2025 Summer heat is here, and it’s no joke. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to serious health risks, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Staying safe during these sweltering days takes a bit of planning and attention. Here are some ideas: • Stay indoors or in shaded areas during peak sun hours • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing • Apply sunscreen when outdoors • Drink water often, even before feeling thirsty • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles • Watch for signs of heat-related illness like dizziness, nausea, or confusion Hydration and Cooling Strategies Most people need about three-quarters of a gallon of water each day, and more when sweating heavily. One way to check hydration is by monitoring urine color: dark yellow may be a sign of dehydration. Avoid sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic drinks. When sweating a lot, pair water with a salty snack or a sports drink to replace lost minerals. When temperatures hit the high 90s, fans alone may not be enough. A cool shower, an air-conditioned space, or time in a designated cooling center is more effective for lowering body temperature. DAYAN & ASSOCIATES, PLLC.: Opens in Aventura Bringing Individualized Services to Clients By Erika Cartwright December 12, 2022 Share Life on a day-to-day basis can be complicated enough. We certainly do not need all the unnecessary stress, headache and additional problems caused by incorrect accounting. Simple mistakes happen easily, records being inaccurate or not having access to the most up-to-date tax benefits can be costly. This is especially true these days, when everything is changing at such a rapid pace, whether it be technology, financial markets or the political scene. It makes it difficult to stay up to date with the newest changes. That’s why it is crucial to make sure you are in the hands of an experienced, knowledgeable, well-versed accountant with your best interests at heart. This is precisely the service and personalized approach that Dayan & Associates, PLLC. provides to the South Florida community. Dayan & Associates, PLLC. is a new CPA Firm, located in the heart of Aventura, Florida founded by Oren Dayan, CPA. in 2022. The new firm intends to deliver a fresh approach to service, offering a combination of their experience, expertise, drive and passion. Dayan & Associates PLLC. intends to take care of their clients with A through Z service, providing the accounting skills for success and financial growth, where the client is priority. They are about providing maximum support, while alleviating all the unnecessary stress that is associated with bookkeeping and taxes. After all, no one likes receiving notices from the IRS or having to pay penalties. The founder of Dayan & Associate, PLLC., Oren Dayan, has a well-versed educational and professional background in the Tax Industry. Oren received a Bachelor’s Degree of Arts, majoring in Accounting & Information Systems, along with a minor in Economics from CUNY, Queens College in New York, where he made the Dean’s List and graduated Magna Cum-Laude. Oren continued his studies and successfully attained a Master’s in Science, majoring in Accounting & Information Systems, received the Graduate Distinguished Scholar Award, as well as graduating with Honors in Accounting & Information Systems. As a Licensed Certified Public Accountant, Oren attained invaluable experience as a financial auditor in one of New York’s major accounting firms. After gaining hands-on experience as an auditor, he realized that more satisfaction was found in helping clients prepare accurate books/financial reports, while preparing the return with the most advantageous and beneficial tax results. Over the years, Oren has acquired crucial knowledge working with small and mid-sized firms, especially during the tough financial times of COVID-19. He helped struggling businesses secure the funding they needed to continue operations during the Pandemic, relieving their fear of having to close their doors. Growing up, Oren spent his vacations in Aventura, Florida and therefore considers it his second home. In the early part of 2022, he decided to relocate his family to Aventura from Queens, New York. Oren has a broad ethnic background; a mosaic of Jewish, Israeli, Syrian and Egyptian roots, which, along with his Hebrew speaking abilities, make him a great asset to the local community. One of his favorite things about Florida is its ethnic diversity, which he states, “Makes it beautiful and unique - something I grew up with in NY and feel that it is what makes these cities just so special. People here are great - just like New Yorkers, but a lot happier!” With the belief that Florida has a strong place in the future of America, Oren made the decision to move his growing family to Aventura and invest in the community. Oren says, “There is no better place to raise a family than Florida, with the warmth of the people, the diverse culture, the opportunities and of course the amazing weather.” It had been a lifelong dream of his to open a business in Florida, “COVID-19 was a tough period in everyone’s lifetime, I’m glad I can see the silver lining that the Pandemic brought me to Florida,” Oren explains. “Living through, albeit at a young age, the Financial Crash Of 2008, COVID-19 and other times of economic hardship, people need to have a responsible and competent accountant for their business and personal finances, so they can sleep well at night, with the comfort of knowing that they are in good and capable hands.” The professionals at Dayan & Associates, PLLC. provide a personalized plan which caters to the clients’ needs, while keeping their best interests in mind and achieving optimum results in all aspects of taxation and long-term financial planning. (Ocean First Institute, USA) Goliath Grouper, once relatively abundant in U.S. waters in the 1890s to early 1900s, experienced extreme overfishing thereafter, approaching extinction by the1980s. Fishery closures were put into place that set this species on a trajectory to recovery for 20 years. However, despite these protections, populations seem to be on another decline. Our team, led by Dr. Chris Malinowski, is on a mission to investigate these declines in offshore waters of Florida. Deep Look: A Coral is Born When the moon, sun and ocean temperatures all align, an underwater "snowstorm" occurs. Corals put on a massive spawning spectacle by sending tiny white spheres floating up the water column all at once. Wild Hope: Whale Shark Homecoming (Geoff Luck, USA) Watch as a fishing community in Gujarat, India embraces a cultural shift and initiates local conservation efforts to protect whale sharks after years killing thousands of the world’s largest fish. The documentary highlights whale shark slaughter in 2001. An NGO, a local religious leader named Morari Bapur, and Indian law inspire locals to pivot and rally around local pride protecting and honoring whale sharks rather than killing them. The Human Side of Plastic, Babacar Thiaw (Andrew Lynch, Ben Ayers, Rush Sturges, USA) Rooted in his love for the ocean, Babacar Thiaw, Founder of Senegal’s first zero-waste restaurant, turned his passion and dedication into action, creating a movement reaching beyond the coastline of his hometown in Dakar, Senegal. A picturesque, captivating short film filled with inspiration and hope for our planet. Caleb - Beyond the Bite (Nicola Gerrard, South Africa) Years after having lost his leg to a shark, Caleb confronts his disability, his vulnerability, and his fears, and explores his paradoxically deepening connection with the ocean– and with sharks. Now he must choose between a self-image as victim, or survivor. In swimming among them, he experiences a paradigm shift, recognizing his place in the world. Souls (Ian Mun, Singapore) Rarely do you get six world-renowned ocean legends in the same room and on the same panel but suggest a dive trip and they will be on that boat. Inspiring stories from award-winning underwater photographers on their first experience diving into the ocean, changes they have seen in their lifetime, and yet, they remain hopeful for future generations.
