  • Be a Savvier Shopper: A Buying Strategy Can Reduce Prices Dramatically

Be a Savvier Shopper: A Buying Strategy Can Reduce Prices Dramatically July 28, 2022 Share Whether you're shopping online or in-store, you can ensure you're getting the most for your money with a little extra planning. These savvy shopping tips can help you score the most savings and added benefits while you're at it. Time Your Purchase Before any big purchase, spend time researching the product and retailers to find potential upcoming sales or promotions. Also be conscious of the calendar and holidays or gift-giving events that might prompt special offers on an item you're looking to buy. Another smart strategy: shopping end-of-season sales when items are marked down to make way for new inventory. Use Digital Shopping Tools You may be leery of signing up for promotional emails but remember - it's only junk mail if it isn't useful. Putting your name on mailing lists of your favorite retailers and brands is a good way to get early or exclusive access to special offers and coupons. Downloadable browser extensions and plug-ins are other cost-saving tools that are increasingly popular. When you're shopping with one or more of these tools installed, your browser automatically checks for coupons or price comparisons that allow you to get the best available deal. This browser extension will automatically apply coupon codes for free: https://capitaloneshopping.com Shop Refurbished Whether it be for savings or sustainability (or both) refurbished products are a top choice among savvy shoppers. An option like eBay Refurbished delivers quality, like-new products at deep discounts from premium brands that are thoroughly vetted to meet high performance standards. You can shop across multiple condition grades and a wide range of price points within categories like tablets, smartwatches, laptops, desktops and smartphones - giving you more choice and the reassurance of buying a product that fits your specific needs and budget. Score big savings on trusted refurbished products at https://www.ebay.com/b/eBay-Refurbished/bn_7040708936 Save on Shipping When you're researching an online purchase and comparing prices, be sure to factor shipping into your total cost. Many retailers offer free shipping once you spend a certain amount, extend free shipping to preferred shoppers or offer periodic shipping promotions, so it's worth exploring the options. Also beware that buying items on sale can drop you below free shipping minimums, so ultimately you pay more than you would have by paying full price. In some cases, you can also save money by having an item shipped to the local brick-and-mortar store and picking it up there. Take Advantage of Benefits Understanding the terms of your purchase can help protect you if there's a problem and may even allow you to take advantage of special rewards. Before finalizing a transaction, check into the warranty options. Even refurbished products can come with warranties for a specified time. For example, all eBay Refurbished products are backed by one- or two-year warranties. For new items, some retailers offer the option to extend your warranty beyond what the manufacturer provides. In addition, some retailers offer money back incentives on certain purchases or allow you to accumulate rewards for discounts on future purchases. With inflation and scarcity issues remaining top of mind for consumers, shopping refurbished provides another option to buy in-demand products. In addition to value and availability, sustainability is another motivator for purchasing like-new. Shopping for refurbished goods, extends the life of the product and reduces harmful waste. < Previous News Next News >

  • It's Time To Register Sunny Isles Beach: There Are New Rules To Scoot Safe Throughout The City

It's Time To Register Sunny Isles Beach: There Are New Rules To Scoot Safe Throughout The City March 21, 2024 Share Do you ride a motorized scooter in Sunny Isles Beach? If so, there’s a new requirement. The city has a new Motorized Scooter Registration Program to enhance your Safety and Security in Sunny Isles Beach. The new City Ordinance requires that all motorized scooters be registered with the City of Sunny Isles Beach. In addition, this Ordinance requires that all scooter riders follow traffic safety rules, including no tandem riding and wearing a helmet if under 16 years of age. If you plan to operate your motorized scooter within city limits, it is now required to complete the Registration Process under Ordinance 2023-609. But here’s the good news – this registration is not just about following the rules; it’s about safeguarding your scooter. In the unfortunate event of theft and other security concerns, having your scooter registered can make all the difference. Registering your scooter is easy as 1-2-3. Your can register your scooter in person March 23 at the Egg Scramble at Pelican Community Park - 18115 North Bay Road in Sunny Isles Beach. If you prefer to register online visit: https://www.sibfl.net/scootsafe/ - After completing the Online Registration Form, applicants will be mailed a Registration Decal. The Decal must be affixed to the scooter in a visible location. This Decal is like your scooter’s very own badge – simply pop it on the front of your scooter (we recommend within 12 inches from the top), and you’re ready to hit the road! Decals are NOT transferable from one scooter to another. However, a Decal is transferable from one person to another when there has been a change in ownership of the scooter and in accordance with a change in the registration of the motorized scooter. In addition to registration, this ordinance outlines some important rules for safe scooter operation. Here’s the scoop: Follow Traffic Signals: Just like any other vehicle, riders must obey official traffic-control signals and signs. It’s all about keeping everyone safe and sound. Speed Limit: Motorized scooters should not exceed 15 miles per hour on sidewalks and should not exceed 20 miles per hour on the roadway. It’s a fun ride, but let’s keep it safe. Safety First: If you’re under 16, don’t forget to wear your helmet. We’ve got your noggin covered! Solo Ride: Scooters are meant for one person at a time, so it’s all about your solo adventure. Ride With Traffic: Scooters must ride with the flow of traffic and follow traffic signals, using extra caution around intersections and driveways. Stay in Line: If you are riding alongside another scooter rider, you must ride in a single file line. Ears Open: While cruising, ditch the cell phone, headset, headphone, or listening device, except for a hearing aid. We need you to stay aware of your surroundings. Be Visible: Your scooter should sport a reflective front white light, visible from 500 feet away, and a reflective rear red light, visible from 600 feet away. Safety first, even in the dark! In addition to registration, all who operate a motorized scooter within the City of Sunny Isles Beach must adhere to the rules set forth in Ordinance 2023-609. Failure to do so may result in a citation. For the first violation you will receive a written warning, for the second violation you will receive a minimum fine of $25. For the third and Subsequent Violations there will be a minimum fine of $50, with a maximum penalty of $500 for a single violation. Violators may face non-criminal traffic or pedestrian infractions and officers have the authority to confiscate the scooter. For more information about Ordinance 2023-609, please call Code: Compliance at: (305) 792-1760. Or visit: www.sibfl.net/scootsafe < Previous News Next News >

  • Taxes & Our City: Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper Discusses Proposals Coming Out Of The State Legislature | sun-times

Taxes & Our City: Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper Discusses Proposals Coming Out Of The State Legislature By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Apr 2, 2026 Two Weeks Ago, We Hosted A Meeting To Address Property Tax Proposals Coming Out Of The State Legislature. Property Appraiser Marty Kiar, Finance Director CFO Geo Neste, And I Shared Our Observations. I Discussed The Hearing And A View From An Elected Perspective. CFO Neste Reported On What Property Taxes Pay For And What Revenue Streams We Depend On As A City. Property Appraiser Kiar Shared A Breakdown Of The Various Proposals Being Discussed And What They Would Mean To Our Budgets And Level Of Services. At the time of this meeting the State ended session without a budget and without any bills passing on taxes except for one for the House of Representative fully eliminating property tax on homestead property within ten years. The following is my brief speech and introduction. There is still not a firm date for the state to go into special session, but we will still continue to follow this issue very closely. I have flowed through all the discussions on this issue and have been watching the hearings over the past months. I keep thinking about how we will get here. There had been this notion that floated on Social Media from a constituent, “I have paid for my house, why should I keep paying?” Our Governor commented on it and now has used it as a platform to cut property taxes. This statement that continues to be repeated is simply a false narrative. It is important to know the politics around this. Property taxes are to pay for services not mortgages. How many of you think the state collects property tax? Well, they do not. Cities, counties and special districts do. This is why they are going after taxes. It is a deflection away from insurance cost and healthcare. The state does control those issues. Does anyone know what rank Florida is when it comes to overall taxes? It used to rank the 4th lowest. In 2025, it now ranks 6th. Alaska is the lowest and Hawaii is the highest. The question then becomes whether taxes are cut and what will happen to our level of services? The state is not touching school taxes which are on average a third of your taxes. Our CFO Geo Neste will get into more financial detail. The house bill passed a bill but no bill from the senate. The bill proposes the elimination of taxes on homestead properties over the next ten years. It is clear that they have avoided answering the important questions about how cities and counties and districts will be able to address the cuts. During the hearings it was clear they are simply driven by politics not quality of life issues. They have stated that we cannot cut police or emergency services. There is not a sales tax increase on the table. So, this plan has no replacement revenue so every other service will be impacted. Do you know if response times would be impacted, would you support tax cuts? If you knew a fire fee would need to be increased to cover services, would you vote for a tax cut? If you know that paying for the running of our public works services would require fee increases across water sewer stormwater? Would you support a tax cut? If we were to run our parks, we would have to increase fees and shutter our buildings, would you vote for a cut? You see where I am going with this. As a note, not one resident said yes. I do not want it to seem like I’m spreading fear. I genuinely want our residents to know nothing is free and if our largest source of revenue is cut, we will still have services provided. I will continue to keep everyone posted. Wishing all our residents and Blessed Passover and Easter. May this holiday time be filled with love and peace. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . Please visit me on my Facebook page at: Mayor Joy Cooper. Like! Follow! And share! Previous Next

  • Immigration and America's Racial Reckoning

Immigration and America's Racial Reckoning By Jonette Christian March 31, 2022 Share The Civil Rights Movement was America's greatest Moral Crusade, the culmination of years of determined Citizen Activism, leading to radical changes in the 1960s. We didn't just settle for a level playing field. We embraced Affirmative Action, expanded Anti-Poverty Programs, rewrote history books, renamed public buildings, erected new statues, promoted talented Black people in journalism, sports and Hollywood. Multiple Black Mayors, City Councilors and Police Chiefs were elected. Black Incomes grew after World War I and the Black-White Wage Gap narrowed until around 1970. This remarkable achievement was mostly accomplished in the face of The Jim Crow Laws and with minimal help from White People. In the ensuing half-century, the gap widened to 1950 levels. What happened? A new book, "Back of the Hiring Line" by Roy Beck, offers a meticulously documented perspective on this national puzzle. Along with employment data, immigration and labor historians, Beck tells the story through the writings and speeches of Prominent Black Leaders such as: Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, A. Phillip Randolph and Black-Owned Newspapers, all of whom doggedly advocated for tight labor policies following the Civil War. Finally, a mounting demand by Black and labor activists forced Congress to cut immigration numbers in half in 1924. The Great Wave ended. Blacks began migrating North to fill blue-collar jobs in factories deprived of European workers. During this half-century of tight labor, wages increased, wealth disparities shrank, the middle class exploded and Black average incomes skyrocketed. Employers were forced to hire and train from within, negotiate with unions for pensions, cost of living wages and health care. But, in 1965, Congress changed course again, radically expanding annual immigration numbers. Since 1990 Congress, placating the tech lobby, has given away millions of high-paying tech jobs through guest worker programs. The demand for foreign workers is unending. This February, the House passed the America Competes Act, expanding yet again foreign worker visas. With the surge in foreign workers, some employers tended to prefer immigrants who were willing to accept long hours and lower wages. Blacks were shafted in one industry after another where previously employed. They also missed out on entry-level jobs in technology, losing the opportunity to develop those skills, networks and work experience that lead to upward mobility and generational wealth. Blacks earn one in 10 Computer Science degrees nationwide, but account for only 2.6% of Silicon Valley tech workers. Seventy-one percent of tech workers in Silicon Valley today are foreign-born. In the 1990s, Congress authorized the formation of the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform. After seven years of study, the commission told Congress to significantly decrease immigration, setting an annual cap of 550,000. The current level of immigration is over one million annually. Congress ignored the experts they had chosen to consult and set immigration numbers to please business lobbies wanting more workers, more consumers and for the clamor to be for more foreign labor continues. Immigration numbers have played a largely unrecognized role in forcing vulnerable groups to compete against each other and Blacks have been especially harmed. The solution is simple: Congress should reduce the numbers. All workers, immigrant and native-born, would benefit from tighter labor markets and higher wages. Jonette Christian is a founder of Mainers for Sensible Immigration Policy. This piece originally ran in the Lewiston Sun-Journal. < Previous News Next News >
