- Jackson Msimbe & Sabrina Mirabal
Jackson Msimbe & Sabrina Mirabal By Jerry Jimenez, Navy Office of Community Outreach October 28, 2021 Share Hollywood & Pembroke Pines Natives Take Pride in Serving Their Country Petty Officer 1st Class Jackson Msimbe, a native of Hollywood, Florida, is serving with the U.S. Navy’s cutting-edge maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft squadron in Oak Harbor, Washington. Msimbe joined the Navy 11 years ago. Today, Msimbe serves as an aviation electronics technician. “Pretty much I was recruited out of college,” said Msimbe. “I was attracted by the education benefits and the opportunity of traveling around the world. I wanted a career path, something that would be stable for my future.” Msimbe serves with Maritime Patrol Squadron Forty-Seven, a high-tech maritime patrol and reconnaissance squadron tasked with monitoring the world’s oceans in the state-of-the-art P-8A “Poseidon.” Msimbe attended Miami Jackson Senior High School and graduated in 2004. Today, Msimbe uses skills and values similar to those found in Hollywood. “Growing up the biggest thing was the cultural diversity,” said Msimbe. “It helped to bring these lessons to the Navy. When I joined the Navy, I was able to work with people from different walks of life.” These lessons have helped Msimbe while serving in the Navy supporting the P-8 Poseidon mission. The P-8 Poseidon mission is to conduct maritime patrol and reconnaissance as well as long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and intelligence gathering missions. They deploy around the globe to monitor the world’s oceans wherever they are needed. The P-8A Poseidon, the Navy’s newest maritime, patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, is a replacement aircraft for the legacy P-3C “Orion”. According to Navy officials, leveraging the experience and technology of the successful P-3C “Orion” with the needs of the fleet, the P-8A is designed to be combat-capable, and to improve an operator’s ability to efficiently conduct anti-submarine warfare; anti-surface warfare; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Serving in the Navy means Msimbe is part of a world that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “We keep the water safe and the freedom of navigation contributes to economic prosperity back home,” said Msimbe. With more than 90 percent of all trade traveling by sea, and 95 percent of the world’s international phone and internet traffic carried through fiber optic cables lying on the ocean floor, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity and security of the United States is directly linked to a strong and ready Navy. According to Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday, four priorities will focus efforts on sailors, readiness, capabilities and capacity. “For 245 years, in both calm and rough waters, our Navy has stood the watch to protect the homeland, preserve freedom of the seas, and defend our way of life,” said Gilday. “The decisions and investments we make this decade will set the maritime balance of power for the rest of this century. We can accept nothing less than success.” Msimbe and other sailors have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service. “I'm most proud of attaining my master's degree in health care administration using the Navy tuition assistance program, while still doing my job as an aviation electronics technician and while on sea duty,” said Msimbe. “I'm also proud of being selected for the 2019 in the Arena award.” As Msimbe and other sailors continue to train and perform the missions to support national defense, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy. “To me, serving in the Navy means sacrifice,” added Msimbe. “It's a great opportunity to serve others and be humble and develop yourself to have a bright future. It's not about me, it's about others.” Sabrina Mirabal Petty Officer 3rd Class Sabrina Mirabal, a native of Pembroke Pines, Florida, serves the U.S. Navy aboard the guided-missile destroyer operating out of Everett, Washington. Mirabal joined the Navy two years ago. Today, Mirabal serves as a sonar technician aboard USS Sampson based in Everett, Washington. “I joined the Navy for new beginnings and opportunities,” said Mirabal. Mirabal attended Charles W. Flanagan High School and graduated in 2019. Today, Mirabal uses skills and values similar to those found in Pembroke Pines. “I learned that everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt and the chance to do better,” said Mirabal. These lessons have helped Mirabal while serving aboard USS Sampson. A Navy destroyer is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system. More than 300 sailors serve aboard USS Sampson. Their jobs are highly specialized, requiring both dedication and skill. The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry along with a multitude of other assignments that keep the ship mission-ready at all times. Serving in the Navy means Mirabal is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “We contribute to national security by using diplomacy to rally allies and isolate threats,” said Mirabal. Mirabal and other sailors have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service. “I am super proud of graduating from sonar technician school and doing a job I care about,” said Mirabal. As Mirabal and other sailors continue to train and perform the missions to support national defense, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy. “It's a very interesting stepping stone in my life," added Mirabal. "It has created a new outlook in life." < Previous News Next News >

- Grill-Free Greatness Air Fryer Steak Recipe A Gastro Game Changer | sun-times
Grill-Free Greatness Air Fryer Steak Recipe A Gastro Game Changer South Florida Sun Times Mar 20, 2025 I Love A Grilled Steak, But I Don’t Love Standing Out In The Cold To Grill It. And I Don’t Love Heating Up The House With The Oven, Especially During The Warmer Months. The Air Fryer Is Always A Great Option, Regardless Of Weather Or Season! Why? Because Of The Consistent Heat That Is Created In That Small Little Chamber, The Steak Cooks Perfectly Every Time In The Air Fryer. You’ll Get Consistent Results Because You Don’t Have To Worry About The Temperature Changing Up. It’s SO hands off! Once you get it going, you can go do other things! All you need to remember to do is to flip it once during cooking time. Go work on the sides for dinner or tidy up the kitchen. No need to babysit! Near the end of cooking time, I do recommend keeping an eye on the internal temperature. Because cooking time WILL vary, depending on the thickness of your steak. What cut of steak is best for an Air Fryer? • Get the best steak you can afford. • A Ribeye Steak is a good choice because of the amount of fat marble. • A New York Strip Steak will work well too, just look for a nice fat cap as well as some good marbling. • Ask your butcher to give you the best Ribeye or Strip Steak they have. To get the most bang for your buck, get the best one that is available that day. • Aim for steaks that are close to 1 1/2 inches thick. Ingredients and Supplies for The Perfect Air Fryer Steak Recipe: Steak Ingredients: • Ribeye Steaks • Avocado Oil • Salt • Black Pepper Garlic Herb Butter Ingredients: • Unsalted Butter • Chopped Fresh Parsley • Minced Garlic • Worcestershire Sauce • Salt Supplies: • Cutting board • Paper towel • Meat thermometer • Air Fryer How to cook steak in an Air Fryer: Step 1: Temper the Steak First, as with any steak, it’s wise to “temper” your meat. This helps it cook more evenly. If you have a thinner steak, 20 minutes will do. A thicker steak would need more time, like 30 minutes. Step 2: Use a Little Oil Next, rub the Steak with just a small amount of oil. You’ll want an oil with a high smoke point (I use avocado). This will help the seasonings you use stick to the meat. And then prepare the garlic butter by mixing together the softened butter, parsley, garlic, Worcestershire Sauce and the salt. Step 3: Liberally season the steak Pat the Steaks dry with paper towels, then rub a little bit of oil over the Steak and on the bottom of the air fryer basket. Season your steak liberally. In this recipe, I used Kosher salt because I have the seasoned butter that I will add at the end. It’s better to be a little heavy handed when it comes to salt and steak. Important note: Be sure to get the sides too! You can dab them in any over-sprinkle from your seasoning. Step 4: Preheat the Air Fryer In a lot of my recipes, I don’t worry about preheating. HOWEVER, preheating the Air Fryer for steak is a MUST! Preheat at 400 Degrees Fahrenheit or 200 Degrees Celsius for at least 5 minutes. Pro Tip: I like to place the fatty side down first in the Air Fryer and hold it there for a few seconds before I lay the steak down. Step 5: Air Fry Steak Once the Air Fryer is preheated, place steaks in the Air Fryer and then Air Fry for 10-16 minutes, flipping and rotating halfway through. Cooking time will vary depending on your Air Fryer and thickness of steaks. Internal temperature of the steak should be 130˚F or 54˚C – 135˚F or 57˚C for Medium-Rare or 140˚F or 60˚C – 145˚F or 63˚C for Medium. Step 6: Rest air fried steak Remove steak from the Air Fryer and place it on the baking rack. Top with garlic butter and allow to rest for 1/2 the time it took to cook. Alternatively, turn off the Air Fryer, leaving steaks in it, top steaks with butter, close the Air Fryer and let rest for half the amount of time it took to cook. How long does it take a steak to cook in an Air Fryer? Cooking time will vary depending on your Air Fryer and the thickness of your steaks. So you need to have an instant read meat thermometer to know when your steak is done cooking! As a general rule of thumb, plan on about 15 minutes to cook with 1 1/2-inch thick steaks, but check the temp to get it just right just right. Air Fryer Steak Internal Temperature Guide The nice thing about steak is that you can cook it to the internal temperature that you love best. Here are the recommended internal temperatures for steak. Rare: 125˚F/52˚C Medium Rare: 135°F/57˚C Medium: 145°F/63˚C Medium Well: 150˚/66˚C Well Done: 160˚F/71˚C You’ll need to flip and rotate the meat just once during cooking if you are using an Air Fryer. Only do that once, as you want to handle the meat as little as possible. Once the steak reaches desired internal temp, it’s time to let your steak rest. The general rule of thumb is to let the steak rest for half the time it took to cook it. This will allow the internal temp to equalize and lock in the juices. YUM. It’s also important to remember that the steak will continue to cook after removing it from the heat. For example, if you want to cook it to 130˚F/54˚C, you will want to remove the steak from the heat just a few degrees less to get a perfectly cooked steak! There are two ways you can let the steak rest. 1. Remove the steaks and let them rest on a cooling rack (or something that keeps the steak lifted from the surface), and top with your garlic butter. 2. OR you can top them with the butter while they sit in the Air Fryer and let them rest right in the basket. Easy Garlic Herb Butter Recipe for Steak I love this simple garlic herb butter recipe! It adds just the right amount of flavor to the steak and makes it look even more amazing too. Make extra to add to mashed potatoes, veggies, bread, fish and more. Ingredients 2 Tablespoons of Unsalted Butter, softened 1/2 Tablespoon of Chopped Fresh Parsley 1/2 Teaspoon of Minced Garlic 1/4 Teaspoon of Worcestershire Sauce 1/8 Teaspoon of Salt Instructions Mix together the softened, Unsalted Butter, the Chopped Fresh Parsley, the Minced Garlic, Worcestershire Sauce and the Salt. If you only have salted butter, just reduce or omit the amount of added salt. Easy peasy! This Air Fryer steak recipe is simple and juicy! - Real Estate Insurance: Catastrophic Weather Will Continue To Impact Rates
Real Estate Insurance: Catastrophic Weather Will Continue To Impact Rates By Elizabeth Fiegehen January 13, 2022 Share It wasn’t just COVID-19 that shaped the risky 2021 real estate market. The continuous and growing impact of climate change has played a key role in many property owner’s risk profiles over the last decade are hitting the U.S. harder than ever before. Wildfires, coupled with an unexpected deep freeze in Texas, ate up a significant portion of property insurance capacity. Hurricane Ida alone packed a $25 billion punch. Unfortunately, a “return to normal” for the real estate industry is not yet in sight. And who knows what the “new normal” may be. Instead, the upcoming year looks to be more of the same — a challenging environment that will require real estate owners and operators to use experience and tools to take as much control of their risk as possible and shape their risk story to worried insurance carriers. As they take on this challenge, here is what real estate owners and operators in South Florida can expect in 2022. Catastrophic weather will continue to impact insurance rates. Extreme natural catastrophes are no longer rare. Nearly one third of Americans live in a county impacted by a weather disaster in 2021, and this year’s Atlantic tropical season brought 21 named storms to Florida alone. In 2020, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) started the process of reevaluating property flood risk lines in all areas for the first time in almost 50 years, with FEMA 2.0. Previously, only basic statistics such as a property’s elevation were taken into consideration, but now FEMA is factoring in rainfall, storm surge and how much it costs to rebuild to determine risk level. The enlarged flood zones in some counties will force thousands to buy flood insurance, and it’s predicted that over 75% of existing policyholders will see an increase in premiums. This new attention to risk is causing many portfolio owners to evaluate property coverage costs and exclusions before buying. Reinsurers are exiting the market at a higher rate, drying up capacity and rates and consequently leaving fewer coverage options and higher rates for real estate owners and operators in the area. While potentially unsettling, this is projected to be the new normal as climate change continues to bring frequent and extreme storms to coastal regions. Catastrophic modeling will be even more important. Global catastrophic losses in the first half of 2021 exceeded $40 billion. Insurance providers have taken notice and are reevaluating their application requirements. Catastrophe (CAT) models, which simulate potential catastrophic events and estimate the potential loss, are already heavily used across the real estate sector. However, it will become more and more critical to help property owners understand the extent of their risk moving forward, as well as estimating necessary policy limits and even securing coverages. In fact, some underwriters now require CAT modeling for large real estate portfolios. For the remainder of the 2020s, a strategic combination of CAT modeling, water mitigation and disaster recovery planning will be required for portfolio owners to secure the right coverage in high-risk areas. More scrutiny for multi-family housing owners is expected. Insurance companies have been tightening conditions for insuring multi-family housing properties in recent years in response to worsening weather conditions. Recent headline-making disasters such as the collapse of a Surfside condo building have only intensified these concerns, leading many insurance providers to require proof of passed inspections before coverage. At the same time, the market has experienced a long-standing rise in claims frequency which has led many mainstream carriers to only offer coverage with reduced limits for residential properties, forcing layers of policies on property owners in order to meet even baseline coverage needs. Unfortunately, multi-family housing owners and operators can expect more scrutiny in 2022 as underwriters continue to put loss history, previous damage and updates to electrical, plumbing and roof structures under a microscope. A clear risk management plan will be vital to paint an accurate picture of controls to prevent high-cost claims. Opportunities in repurposing. Losses and vacancies due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on businesses large and small have brought new opportunities to every local market and South Florida is no exception. Big box stores and anchor mall tenants are finding new life as warehouses, office space is being repurposed as restaurants and entertainment venues, and vice versa. Luckily for real estate owners, the low interest rates that helped push repurposing along in 2021 are expected to remain relatively stable through the end of 2022. From an insurance standpoint, owners will need to remember that when a building’s purpose changes, so does its risk. Evaluating new risks and coverage with a broker will be an absolute must as they take on these new opportunities. Owners who want to reduce their exposure and increase resiliency will need to engage both new tech and traditional proactive controls across their portfolio in South Florida and beyond. - Thank You For Your Service
Thank You For Your Service By Catherine Bland, Navy Office of Community Outreach December 13, 2023 Share Plantation Native Serves At Aviation Rescue Swimmer School Airman Samuel Munroe, a native of Plantation, Florida, serves at Aviation Rescue Swimmer School, he graduated from South Plantation High School in 2016. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Plantation. “Where you aim in life is what you get; freedom is a relative term,” said Munroe. "After college, I joined the Navy to live a better life. If you enjoy life and your job, it can be your passion." Munroe joined the Navy five months ago. “The Navy SEALs inspired me to join,” said Munroe. "I heard legends of excellence from stories to be the best you can to be a part of a legacy." Aviation Rescue Swimmer School provides Initial Aviation Water Survival Training and CPR Qualification to all Preflight Student Naval Aviators and Student Naval Flight Officers, Student Flight Surgeons, Naval Aircrew Candidates, Student Aviators from other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and International Student Aviators. Aviation Rescue Swimmers serve in treacherous conditions to complete life-saving missions like evacuating families during a storm, rescuing a crew off of a ship in the Pacific Coast or saving mountain climbers. This year commemorates 50 years of women flying in the U.S. Navy. In 1973, the first eight women began flight school in Pensacola; one year later six of them, known as "The First Six," earned their “Wings of Gold.” Over the past 50 years, the Navy has expanded its roles for women to lead and serve globally and today our women aviators project power from the sea in every type of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard aircraft. Our Nation and our Navy is stronger because of their service. “Having a cadre of students who are eager to learn and extremely hardworking, ensures we offer the best and brightest to naval aviation and the Aviation Rescue Swimmer community,” said Captain Brad Arthur, Commanding Officer, Naval Aviation Schools Command. Serving in the Navy means Munroe is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “The Navy contributes to national security by excelling in communication efforts and maritime knowledge,” said Munroe. With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy. Munroe has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service. “I am most proud of being with the Navy Challenge Program because it challenges me and holds me accountable,” said Munroe. "It means being amongst the best." As Munroe and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy. “Serving in the Navy means being successful and professional,” said Munroe. “It also means becoming a great student, being a part of a team and being held accountable as a teammate.” Munroe is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible. “I would like to thank my mom, Aida, for supporting me,” added Munroe. “She talks about my grandpa and cousin who served and were successful. She pushes me to strive for that.” < Previous News Next News >
