  • Gen Z Is Least Likely To Believe Cancer Can Be Prevented. Many Don't Know Basic Screenings Exist. | sun-times

Gen Z Is Least Likely To Believe Cancer Can Be Prevented. Many Don't Know Basic Screenings Exist. By Sheeka Sanahori Sep 17, 2026 Gen Z Adults Are At The Stage When Lifelong Habits Start To Take Shape. They're Launching Careers, Reflecting On Their Values, And Building Relationships And Routines. They're Also Navigating Messages About Beauty Standards That Sometimes Oppose The Needs Of Their Long-Term Health. Case In Point: The "Tanmaxxing" Trend Found On Social Media. "Ain't no way I'm letting my job stop me from soaking in the 8 UV," one Instagram user wrote while tanning from a car with the convertible roof down. The video is one of hundreds by "tanfluencers" documenting the ways they take tanning to the extreme, including skipping sunscreen or tanning in the middle of the day, when the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays are at their most harmful. This risky trend is one example of a growing generational gap in beliefs about Cancer Prevention. According to the 2026 Early Detection Survey from the Prevent Cancer Foundation, Gen Z adults (ages 21-29) are less likely than their parents and grandparents to fully consider that Cancer Risk can be reduced through prevention and early detection. Gen Z faces a Cancer Prevention Awareness Gap Across every generation, most adults believe Cancer Risk can be reduced, but Gen Z is the least convinced. While 73% of Baby Boomers agree, only 64% of Gen Z adults do. That same pattern continues when focusing specifically on Skin Cancer. Nearly half of Gen Z respondents believe sunscreen and sun-protective clothing can help reduce their Skin Cancer Risk, compared to 53% of Millennials and 64% of Gen X. Only 37% of Gen Z respondents have had a routine medical appointment or Cancer Screening in the last year, the lowest of any generation. Although certain Cancer Screenings, including Breast and Colorectal Cancer, begin in middle age, some are also recommended for young adults. Cervical Cancer is highly preventable, with screening beginning for people with a Cervix and of average risk at the age of 21. Forty-six percent of Gen Z adults who are eligible said they were not up to date. Systemic barriers prevent healthier lifestyles For some Gen Z adults, the health care system itself is part of the problem. Nearly a third report experiencing discrimination or bias from a health care provider, and 44% believe the system prioritizes profit over patient care. Those experiences could be enough to make someone skip a future health appointment. The most common barrier for Gen Z isn't what you might expect. Three in 5 respondents say they simply lack motivation, a higher rate than Millennials or Gen X. Among the three youngest surveyed generations, Gen Z is the only group that doesn't rank cost as its primary obstacle. The bigger challenge is making preventive care feel urgent and relevant now. Better communication and education could help more get screened Data suggests that practical guidance and clearer communication could make a difference. More than half of Gen Z adults say having a provider to help them navigate the system would increase trust in health care and make it easier for them to get their recommended Cancer Screenings. Affordable, predictable costs would help 52% of respondents. Sixty-five percent of Gen Z adults say they're motivated to schedule Cancer Screenings because they want to live a long, healthy life. Colorectal Cancer is now the leading cause of Cancer Death in people under 50, and Skin Cancer is one of the most common Cancers in people younger than 30. The motivation is there. Reaching them with the right information at the right time may be what it takes. Methodology The Prevent Cancer Foundation commissioned Atomik Research to conduct the Foundation's 4th annual Pan-Cancer Early Detection Survey of U.S. adults ages 21 or older. The margin of error of the overall sample is +/- 1 percentage point with a confidence level of 95%. Fieldwork took place between January 10th and January 30th of 2026. The Cancer Screenings studied in this survey were for Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Lung Cancer, Oral Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Skin Cancer and Testicular Cancer. • Sderot Way In Hallandale Beach | sun-times

Sderot Way In Hallandale Beach By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Mar 4, 2026 I, Along With Our City Commission, Had The Great Honor To Host An Event In Memory Of October 7th And Recognizing Our Sister City Sderot. Last Year, I Requested That Our City Make Sure We Memorialize The History Of October 7th. On February 18th, Southeast 5th Street Was Renamed As Sderot Way In Honor Of Our Sister City. A Marker Was Also Placed In Memorial Of October 7th And The Street Renaming. History is so important. In this day and age many people simply move on and significant events are forgotten. Historically, the Holocaust has been denied. While it has not been forgotten many of the survivors have passed. They bore witness and we need to continue to tell their stories. October 7th was a horrific unprovoked war on Israel. It has been the worst attack on Jews since the holocaust. Sadly, the rise in antisemitism and the offensive position that some people have taken against Israel’s right to defend itself cannot go unchecked. History must be recognized. Truth must be told. The City of Hallandale Beach made sure of this. The murder of innocent lives and the Jewish people must never be forgotten. The City of Sderot, which is 700 kilometers from Gaza, was one of the hardest hit cities. They actually bombed their own police station that was taken over by Hamas. 35,000 people were evacuated out of harm’s way and spread out throughout Israel. It was an honor to have both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Sderot join us for this special event. The Mayor of Sderot, Alon Davidi shared his story of that day. His city had over 14,000 bombs come over. Thanks to the Iron dome many did not get through. Others did. Many cities, including his, were on their own to defend their cities while the Israel Defense Forces mobilized. The Deputy Mayor Hava shared her story about saving many children and seniors who were displaced. Many children were left as orphans. Story after heart breaking story of the carnage. At one point Hamas was going door to door speaking Russian pretending they were police and evacuation only to have doors open and innocent people shot. The story of Sderot and Israel is a lesson in resilience. While so many lives were taken Israel has continued to win the war against Hamas and Hezbollah. I would like to think the world has finally woken up and has seen the hypocrisy of the Free Palestine Movement. The lies and propaganda out of Gaza, Iran and those that want to see Israel wiped out. There are Iranians and other countries that are truly fighting for freedom. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . Meet a Prince & Princess My elderly owner could no longer care for me so now I need to find another family to love. My name is Princess and I’m looking for a castle to call home. I’m a 5-year-old Border Collie mix who is good with other well-mannered dogs and I’m good with older kids. I enjoy delicious treats, love to be pet and I like to cuddle. Once I get to know you, I might be your shadow. Please don’t pass me by just because I grew up. I meant the world to my owner, and she was sad she had to give me up. I know there must be a dog-lover out there willing to give me a chance…could it be you? I’m fourteen-week-old Prince and I would like to be part of your royal family… can you make my wish come true? I have exotic tiger stripe markings and I’m here with my sister Queen. We are just two of the many adorable kittens waiting to be adopted this week at the shelter. Kuk took the restaurant over from his aunt, who retired in 2024 but is often found at Wan’s, welcoming customers and chatting with regulars, many of whom have become personal friends. “I was blessed to be able to step in when my aunt decided it was time to enjoy some well-earned time off. I grew up in the business and spent so many years here. Taking over Wan’s was a huge responsibility, one I didn’t take lightly. This restaurant has been an integral part of my family’s life, not to mention the countless families who have literally grown up at our tables. To say the regulars were watching my every move is a major understatement. Once they saw that my goal was to refresh, not recreate what they cherished and loved, we were off at the races, and it’s been a glorious ride ever since.” The festivities kick off on Wednesday, August 12th, 2026 and will continue through Sunday, August 16th, 2026.
