I, Along With Our City Commission, Had The Great Honor To Host An Event In Memory Of October 7th And Recognizing Our Sister City Sderot. Last Year, I Requested That Our City Make Sure We Memorialize The History Of October 7th. On February 18th, Southeast 5th Street Was Renamed As Sderot Way In Honor Of Our Sister City. A Marker Was Also Placed In Memorial Of October 7th And The Street Renaming.
History is so important. In this day and age many people simply move on and significant events are forgotten. Historically, the Holocaust has been denied. While it has not been forgotten many of the survivors have passed. They bore witness and we need to continue to tell their stories.
October 7th was a horrific unprovoked war on Israel. It has been the worst attack on Jews since the holocaust. Sadly, the rise in antisemitism and the offensive position that some people have taken against Israel’s right to defend itself cannot go unchecked. History must be recognized. Truth must be told. The City of Hallandale Beach made sure of this. The murder of innocent lives and the Jewish people must never be forgotten.
The City of Sderot, which is 700 kilometers from Gaza, was one of the hardest hit cities. They actually bombed their own police station that was taken over by Hamas. 35,000 people were evacuated out of harm’s way and spread out throughout Israel. It was an honor to have both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Sderot join us for this special event.
The Mayor of Sderot, Alon Davidi shared his story of that day. His city had over 14,000 bombs come over. Thanks to the Iron dome many did not get through. Others did. Many cities, including his, were on their own to defend their cities while the Israel Defense Forces mobilized.
The Deputy Mayor Hava shared her story about saving many children and seniors who were displaced. Many children were left as orphans. Story after heart breaking story of the carnage. At one point Hamas was going door to door speaking Russian pretending they were police and evacuation only to have doors open and innocent people shot.
The story of Sderot and Israel is a lesson in resilience. While so many lives were taken Israel has continued to win the war against Hamas and Hezbollah. I would like to think the world has finally woken up and has seen the hypocrisy of the Free Palestine Movement. The lies and propaganda out of Gaza, Iran and those that want to see Israel wiped out. There are Iranians and other countries that are truly fighting for freedom.
