Sunny Isles Beach Community Spotlight: Tomer Shaked City of Sunny Isles Beach - www.sibfl.net/tomer-shaked/ March 2, 2023 Share Valuing and cherishing the diversity in our community is important for Sunny Isles Beach resident, Tomer Shaked. The 17-year-old high school senior has lived in Sunny Isles Beach his entire life and dedicates his time to volunteering and helping the younger generation through academic and personal development. In middle school, Tomer began working with Rabbi Amar at his local Chabad by organizing any special event the Chabad hosted throughout the year. When he entered high school a few years later, Tomer switched gears and started working with the Rabbi by helping younger people overcome addictions. “I really do feel like I’m making a change,” says Shaked. “I used to have that problem myself with gaming and every single time I do that with someone else, I feel like I’m saving them from something I had to endure for many years.” Tomer hopes that his hands-on work is enhancing the quality of people’s lives. He plans to continue his work helping the community by becoming a civil litigator after attending college and law school. Last year he was even able to attend a law school for a full semester where he worked directly with law school professors arguing Supreme Court cases against a panel of judges. Tomer views getting involved in the community as an obligation, especially for the younger generations. Whether it’s going out and cleaning up the environment or spreading awareness about an important topic in the world, he is passionate about making a difference. “I’m very passionate about the younger people in the community as they have by far the most potential,” Tomer explains. “In the future, they are going to be the ones taking the big positions and making a big impact in our community.” Tomer has some advice for his younger peers: “Trying new things will open opportunities. - The Most Influential Rabbi In History ... 31 Years Later | sun-times
The Most Influential Rabbi In History ... 31 Years Later By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil Jul 9, 2025 The 3rd of Tamuz, this year on Sunday, June 29th, marked the 31st Hilula of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Known affectionately and simply as The Rebbe, he was probably the most influential rabbi in history. With his Shluchim emissaries dispatched to every corner of the world, his impact is felt everywhere you turn. After the decimation of the Holocaust, the Rebbe breathed new life and vitality into the Jewish people, urging them (and demonstrating by example) to celebrate Judaism and live life optimistically, to ‘reclaim’ countless individuals and communities to living a Jewish way of life, and to feel personal responsibility for all others everywhere. In so doing, The Rebbe altered the much-prophesied demise of Judaism, forever shifting the course of history and transforming the landscape of Jewish life. The Rebbe took breathtaking responsibility for the material and spiritual welfare of Jews in the Soviet Union (including masterminding the exodus of thousands), Morocco, Iran, and more, while reaching out to Jews in Curacao, Japan, and Alaska... Israel’s leaders turned to the Rebbe for counsel on public health policies; military strategy; economy; relations with the U.S., Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia and more; and, above all, its educational system. Growing up in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, just a few short streets away from The Rebbe, I was fortunate to see The Rebbe all the time. I prayed with him in his Shul, sang by his Farbrengens, stood at his public gatherings and rallies, and watched every glimpse I could. As a child, I would look around at the thousands of people that would constantly come from all over the world to seek his counsel, hear his talks, or just to see his holy face; and I remember thinking how privileged I was to live right there. Every Sunday for hours,The Rebbe would stand, giving out dollars and blessings to thousands of people from all walks of life. He gave the dollar to be given to a charity of choice. People would of course exchange that dollar for one of their own to give to charity, and keep the dollar they got from The Rebbe’s holy hand as a sign of blessing. The Rebbe was remarkably accessible and counseled countless individuals from a wide array of backgrounds, including statesmen and artists as diverse as Ronald Reagan, Robert F. Kennedy, Yitzchak Rabin, Menachem Begin, Elie Wiesel, and Bob Dylan, as well as countless “nameless” individuals who were each showered with his individual attention and love. He spoke out about and was active in large public issues like public school education, charity for employees’ distribution, large families, moral education, the energy crisis, a universal moral code for all, creating and bolstering the Food Stamp/WIC system for America’s underprivileged, the responsibility of government, and much more. He believed and taught that the age-old ideals and text of Torah is as real and relevant today as it was at Sinai, 3,337 years ago. Today, thank G-d, The Rebbe’s teachings and ideals have already become ingrained in our society and inspire millions of Jews and non-Jews. More people than ever are learning his teachings and acting on his wishes of spreading Judaism to Jews, and moral ethics to all people. People of all walks of life flock to his Shul as well as his resting place (known as the Ohel) to pray to G‑d for blessing, guidance and inspiration. In 2013, on the night preceding his election to the Senate, Democratic candidate Cory Booker, an African-American Christian, went to pray at the Rebbe’s Ohel. In 2016, preceding his election, President Trump sent his family to pray at the Ohel on his behalf, but this time around he decided to go himself. Argentina President Javier Milei went to the Ohel before his election and continues to travel there to pray before his most important decisions. Go there any day, any time, and you will see people from all walks of life praying to G-d at that holy site. The Rebbe was a wide-ranging Torah personality whose vast knowledge spanned the entire spectrum of the Torah. His teachings include ideas in Jewish philosophy and theology, commentary on biblical, talmudical and kabbalistic texts, perspectives on world events, and moral and practical directives. At Chabad Chayil we have a text-based group study of The Rebbe’s teachings each Saturday right after Kiddush lunch, which all are welcome to join and thoroughly enjoy. Each week's class is on a different topic, containing super interesting subjects from all aspects of Torah, filled with surprises and always invigorating. Although the Rebbe was treated as royalty by all who met him, he personally lived modestly and even frugally. While presiding over a vast world empire of institutions and activity, his own Synagogue was simple and in major need of a face lift. As a child I always felt bad how simple his synagogue was, and made a promise to myself that when I can one day afford it, I would rebuild his synagogue in the most beautiful way. To learn more about this saintly man, visit: www.ChabadChayil.org/Rebbe . About the Author: Rabbi Kievman together with his wife are the ambassadors of The Rebbe to Highland Lakes, FL. They are the founders of Gan Chabad Preschool, your local CTeen & CKids chapters, CHAP - an afterschool program for Jewish children in Public Schools and direct Chabad Chayil. Annual Back To School Supply Drive: Help Students In Need In Broward County Public Schools August 31, 2023 Share Now that kids are back in school, it is estimated that teachers will spend more than $820 on classroom supplies this year including books, snacks, pencils, paper and cleaning products. To help ease that burden for teachers and families, Broward Education Foundation, the only 501(c)3 charitable organization solely dedicated to serving students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools, has launched its Annual School Supply Drive which equips students with essential supplies and the necessities for success. Last year, Broward Education Foundation provided school supplies to 130,000 under-resourced students in nearly 200 Broward County Title I Schools and classroom supplies for 12,000 teachers in Broward County Public Schools. “A little change can make a big impact,” said Jean McIntyre, Board Chair Of Broward Education Foundation. “For these students, school supplies are a luxury, and we are so grateful for the community’s help in getting our students off to a great start this fall.” According to 90% of teachers surveyed by the national Non-Profit Kids in Need Foundation, three out of four students arrive to class without the requisite school supplies necessary for learning. “More than 200,000 students in Broward County live in poverty which makes our School Supply Drive so important,” said Shea Ciriago, CEO Of Broward Education Foundation. “We all want the best for our students, and we want to give them what they need to succeed. This past fiscal year, the school supplies we donated were valued at more than $2 Million, and with the help of the companies and individuals in our community, we can surpass that amount this year.” How To Help • Donate monetarily to: www.browardedfoundation.org/drive • Collect school supplies at your business or organization. Donations can be dropped off at the Broward Education Foundation School Supply Center at 2300 West Copans Road, Pompano Beach, Florida 33069. Or email: mari-lee.baxter@browardschools.com . • Host a virtual drive within your organization: $10 can supply 200 pencils to help support student learning, $35 can provide a student with a backpack filled with essential school supplies, $100 can support a teacher with essential classroom tools and resources, and $250 can provide art supplies for an entire classroom. The school supplies needed most include backpacks, compositions books (black), crayons, erasers (pink rectangular), folders (2 pocket), glue, glue sticks, hand sanitizer (individual), highlighters, hole punchers (single), index cards (3”x5”), markers, notebook paper (3-hole), pencil pouches, pencil sharpeners, pencils (#2 with erasers), pencils (mechanical), pens (black and blue ink), rulers, scissors (children’s), spiral notebooks (wide-ruled) and tape (clear). - JFR Joins Edmonds Family At White House Event Giving Medal Of Honor To Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds For Saving Jewish Servicemen | sun-times
JFR Joins Edmonds Family At White House Event Giving Medal Of Honor To Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds For Saving Jewish Servicemen Jewish Connection News Mar 17, 2026 The Jewish Foundation For The Righteous (JFR) Joins The Edmonds Family And The Survivors And Descendants Of Stalag Ixa In Celebrating Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds Posthumously Receiving The Medal Of Honor This Week At White House And Department Of War Programs. The JFR Was One Of The First Organizations To Recognize Edmonds’ World War II Heroism, Honoring Him Posthumously With The Foundation’s Yehi Or (Let There Be Light) Award In 2016. Master Sergeant Edmonds was captured by the Nazis during the Battle of the Bulge on December 19, 1944, and sent to Stalag IXA, a prisoner of war camp. As the highest-ranking American soldier in the camp, Edmonds was responsible for 1,292 American POWs, including approximately 200 Jewish American GIs. When the camp’s commandant ordered Edmonds to identify the Jewish soldiers for separation, Edmonds refused. Placing a pistol against his head, the commandant again demanded that the Jewish soldiers step forward. Edmonds responded, “We are all Jews here,” refusing to identify them and thereby saving their lives. Edmonds survived 100 days of captivity and returned home after the war, never speaking of his actions. He passed away in 1985, and it was only decades later that his son, Pastor Chris Edmonds, uncovered the full extent of his father’s heroism. In addition to presenting Edmonds with its Yehi Or Award, the JFR produced its award-winning documentary Footsteps of My Father, which recounts Edmonds’ courage through the lens of his son and several of the Jewish American POWs he saved. The film has screened globally and received numerous honors, helping to bring Edmonds’ story to audiences in the United States and abroad. His heroism has also been recognized by Yad Vashem, which named him Righteous Among the Nations, the only American soldier to receive that distinction. Master Sergeant Edmonds’ story is prominently featured in the JFR’s nationally recognized Holocaust education program on rescue and moral courage. Educators across the country study his actions as a powerful example of leadership, conscience and responsibility in the face of evil. Through teacher seminars, student curricula and public events including documentary screenings, the JFR highlights Master Sergeant Edmonds’ moral clarity and willingness to risk his life for others as a timeless model of heroism. His story continues to inspire students and educators alike, reinforcing the enduring lesson that one individual’s courage can save lives and shape history. “For years, the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous has worked to ensure that Master Sergeant Edmonds’ extraordinary courage and moral leadership would not be forgotten,” said JFR Executive Vice President Stanlee Stahl, who attended the ceremony in Washington. “The awarding of the Medal of Honor affirms what the survivors of Stalag IXA have long known, that his actions represent the highest standard of bravery, humanity and responsibility.” The JFR continues its work of providing monthly financial assistance to aged and needy Righteous Gentiles living in 10 countries. Since its founding, the JFR has provided more than $46 Million to aged and needy rescuers. Its Holocaust teacher education program has become a standard for teaching the history of the Holocaust and educating teachers and students about the significance of the Righteous as moral and ethical exemplars.
