Thanks to the efforts of the National Kidney Foundation of Florida to educate South Floridians about the effects of Chronic Kidney Disease – also known as CKD – families now have access to preventive information, free webinars and learning resources indicating inherent threats of Renal Failure. Finding A Way Forward Together: Hallandale Beach Is Working On Multiple Fronts To Better The Community By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper January 25, 2024 Share Many of us watch our local news and shudder to think about the Gun Violence in our communities and the tragic loss of life. Years ago, these reports came typically out of big cities, but now small and large cities alike have had shootings. We all collectively are working to stem the rise in Violent Crimes. Hallandale Beach has had its share of senseless shootings. The majority have a nexus to gangs that are in the South Florida area. After the COVID-19 Pandemic, we began to see a resurgence of gang conflicts in our City. These are gangs with young adults ages 14 to their late twenties Pompano, Dania Beach, Hollywood, West Park, Pembroke Park and Hallandale Beach all have had rivalries typically stem from High School. One may think of West Side Story but with the prevalence of guns in these fights rather than fist or knives are resulting in shootings. Not all of these crimes make the news. The last shooting that took place was not. A 16-year-old was targeted and shot while on his bike. Four other teens in a car shot at him. He jumped off his bike and they pursued him. He was struck on his foot. Due to our Commissions’ commitment to Public Safety and Investments in Technology that picks up shots fired; Police were on site within minutes. They are conducting a full investigation. This fall we had another tragic shooting and that was the final straw for me. A student at Hallandale High, Marcus Impert was coming home from his first high school football game. His mother debated allowing him to attend. He was on his way home as a passenger when he was shot and killed. The driver who was the intended target was uninjured. Once again, there were no witnesses to come forward. This could be due to fear or simply not wanting a friend, brother, cousin to get in trouble. There are ways through Crime Stoppers which are anonymous to report information. We also have our own City Tip Line at: (954) 457-1404. The Chief and our Department took to the street and went door to door. Their goal was twofold. One to reassure our residents they are working hard and care. The other to give out information on Marcus Impert and Crime Stoppers. The neighborhood was receptive. This case and others are active cases. Our department continues to work on them, and they remain open. Our Police can only do so much. They need evidence to solve crimes. Witnesses are an important part of solving crimes but with or without them it takes a long time to work through the criminal justice system. I would like to say it is not Law and Order, solved in one hour. We all need to work together and try to prevent crime. This takes parents, neighbors, schools, churches and Police working side by side. I was both heartbroken and frustrated. I decided that we need to do more to unite. These young adults go to our schools. There needs to be more understanding and accountability from all parties. I asked to hold a meeting with the Principals, Chiefs of Police and Mayors from our zone. We held our first Task Force Meetings. Sadly, due to the death of Principal Campbell from Gulfstream K-8 we have not met. We will meet as soon as the new principal is appointed. This does not mean we have been sitting back. Principal Campbell talked very wisely at the first meeting. He talked about going back to the old school ways. Children were still not healed from the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The families still were not all back to level footing. His suggestion was to come together as a community with our old Crime Watch Block Parties. I took his message to heart. My goal was simply to get resources and information out to our community as a whole. Not just kids, but for all ages. I was blessed around the same time to be approached by two wonderful individuals that had lost their sons. “Big Ike” of Project Love and Andrea McDonald of “Advise Athletes.” Andrea wanted to do a field day in honor of her Son Alex “Budda” Collins the NFL Football Player. Budda started football in our PAL Program. Alex lost his life when he was struck by a car on his motorcycle. Big Ike, who lost his son 10 years ago, has always done outreach. His first play was about AIDS and changing fear to love. His new project is a play with the goal of uniting the community and Changing fear of Police to collaborating with Pastors, Police and the community. We have partnered with our Police Activities League to create a “Community Field Fun Day and Resource Fair.” Our presenting Sponsor is Memorial Hospitals “One City At A Time” Initiative. The event is FREE of charge. There will be athletic competitions Football, Basketball, Track, Tennis and Pickleball Lessons, a Memorial Service for all that have lost loved ones from Violence and the COVID-19 Pandemic. Aventura Traffic Update June 11, 2021 Share Affecting Island Boulevard and Northeast 183rd Street The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is continuing an improvement construction project in Aventura to replace existing wastewater lines. The project is expected to be completed by March of 2022. There has been an update for street closures, that may affect you. Full Project Description: The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) began their improvement construction project in Aventura on Monday, April 19th, 2021 to replace existing wastewater lines along Island Boulevard and Northeast 183rd Street from Biscayne Boulevard, east to Williams Island. To enhance the reliability of the wastewater system, the Department will be upgrading the water and sewer infrastructure by replacing existing wastewater lines with new lines. One of these projects is new 12-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch wastewater lines on Island Boulevard - Northeast 183rd Street from PS No. 0499 to Biscayne Boulevard, they will replace existing 8-inch, 12-inch and 18-inch wastewater lines. The upgrade of these lines, has been expedited to enhance the reliability of the wastewater system. Most of the construction work, will occur Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and on Saturdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. There may be some night work, when necessary. The project is expected to be completed by March of 2022. Impact to traffic in the affected areas, started on Tuesday, May 25th, 2021. • Eastbound lanes between Northeast 27th Avenue and Northeast 31st Avenue, will be closed, eastbound traffic will be detoured using Northeast 185th Street. • Westbound lanes between Northeast 31st Avenue to Biscayne Boulevard, will be reopened to traffic. Please be advised that to expedite this project, the contractor has been permitted to work extended hours Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. When necessary, the contractor may work, nights and weekends. All attempts will be made to alleviate vehicular congestion with well-defined detours and the contractor will take all of the necessary steps to minimize impacts, to maintain access in and out of the abutting properties. The final road restoration, the milling and resurfacing, will take place, at the end of the project. Arbor Day Success May 16, 2023 Share The Arbor Day Foundation recently recognized the City of Aventura as a recipient of the 2022 Tree City USA Award! The ceremony was held last month at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Aventura City Of Excellence School students showcased their dedication with art as well as dance performances. The City also recognized local businesses and residential communities by presenting them with 2023 Aventura GO Green Recognition Awards for their efforts to reduce energy consumption and encourage sustainability. The City’s GO Green campaign encourages all City departments and the community to practice environmental sustainability by making responsible decisions that reduce negative impacts on the environment, save energy and lower operational costs. Started in 1976, Tree City USA is one of The Arbor Day Foundation’s oldest programs. The founders had a vision for a greener, healthier America and hoped this initiative would inspire change on a nationwide level. The first Tree City USA cohort comprised of 42 communities in 16 states. Today, the program includes more than 3,600 communities from all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. A Peaceful Holiday Season: Let’s All Unite to Support Laws That Protect Innocent Lives By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper November 24, 2022 Share While the election season is finally finishing up, we can now take a pause and pray for a peaceful holiday season. Sadly, this past weekend we once again heard the news of a mass shooting at a night club that celebrates diversity and is known to cater to the LGBTQ community. Ironically this past weekend marked the memorial for individuals in the LGBTQ community killed due to their Identity, Transgender Remembrance Day. The gunman entered in the club killing five and injuring 25 before he was subdued by patrons. It is still not clear if this was a hate crime, but the shooter had an incident before over a bomb threat. What a tragedy for Colorado Springs and the rest of our country. When will these senseless home-grown attacks stop? Colorado does have a new Red Flag Law that allows family members, doctors, and law enforcement to request a judge to remove guns from individuals deemed to be at risk of harming themselves or others. Florida passed a Red Flag Law after the Parkland shooting. Since it was enacted there have been over 8000 individuals banned from owning or purchasing guns. It has been found that these laws are working around the state. This law was a partisan law that then Governor Scott touted as a great example of what can be done to address school violence and could be a blueprint for the nation. After it was passed the NRA filed a lawsuit and went after every Republican that supported it. Even on the national level due to the NRA there has not been an ability to pass this and other common-sense rules. While we have these laws it goes back to the same thing, “If you see something, Say something. “We also need to speak up and support these laws. I have a concealed weapons permit. I have had it for years. I was robbed at gun point in my home years ago. At that time my husband commuted, and I was at home alone weekly with the kids. After that horrific event we decided we both would apply for our concealed weapons permit. It empowered me to feel more secure in our home. If you had asked me before this if I would ever shoot or own a gun, I would have responded no. A few years later we owned a retail franchise with another couple. At that time, we did not have all the online banking systems and quite often had to make cash deposits in drop boxes. At no time was I without my gun. We also went on long boating trips all across the Bahamian Islands. Out at sea on a large boat protection was essential, as you would never know who you may come across. We are responsible gun owners. The super majority of owners are. It is those individuals that are irresponsible, mentally ill, and simply criminals that have caused most of the violence. I have lobbied since 2006 with Mayor Against Illegal Guns, now Everytown For Gun Safety. The genesis of these organization was a result of Congress not reinstating the assault rifle ban of 1994. Without the ban many automatic weapons flooded our streets. It meant now criminals had easy access and our police departments could be out gunned by guns that were meant for war time. To this day I along with many individuals cannot imagine why we need these guns in our streets. And now as a society are seeing the results. Mass shooting. The laws we are trying to enact are common sense. They address the ability to have access to guns which have detachable magazines and many gun loopholes. They address gun registrations of existing assault rifles and firearms. Since it was not reauthorized 37% of police departments reported an increase in shooting and mass fatalities. While many are celebrating the election of a Republican majority, I am asking every Floridian to understand that these laws are critical to persever. Do not be fooled that it is an attack on our right to bear arms. It is all about NRA funded campaigns across the Nation. It is about money and business. Over this holiday let’s all unite to support laws that protect innocent lives. Too many families are sitting around their tables without loved ones. 7,000 Men, Women and Children at Florida Mega Hakhel - Chanukah Festival: Florida Chanukah Hakhel Combines the Best of Both Worlds By DL Phillips December 29, 2022 Share Chabad of South Broward celebrated their 43rd Annual South Florida Chassidic Chanukah Festival Thursday Dec 22 with a concert at the Glamorous Venue Hard Rock Live Casino and Hotel, in Hollywood, only 2 years removed from a quarantined-style drive in concert at the Big Easy parking lot in Hallandale. Modi Rosenfeld, a popular Jewish comedian, has called Florida “a year round Pesach program.” Thousands of Jews flooded Hard Rock Live. Shluchim brought groups from their Chabad Houses, Chai Lifeline had hundreds of guests at the Festival, and thousands of educators, professionals, and businessmen, including people driving from as far as Atlanta and flying in from London, England, witnessed this incredible performance. 2,500 children received Chanukah Gelt and the Moshiach Times! 1,500 Chanukah Menorahs and candles were distributed! Walking through the “Guitar Hotel”, that is seen from commercial jets before landing in South Florida, amid curious glances, Jews from all walks of life gathered for this special Chanukah Festival as it is a Hakhel year when large gatherings are especially encouraged, as were in the time of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The seamless event, produced by Dovid Weinbaum of DW Productions, began with children saying the 12 Pesukim, a miracle story and a heartfelt cry for Ad Mosai. Contemporary artist Ishay Ribo had the sold out venue on their feet with flashlights on, as he lit the room with heart felt music. Avraham Fried exuberantly jumped on stage and sang iconic classic Jewish music. Bochurim danced on the sides to Niggunim. The energy in the room was palpable. Ishay Ribo and Avraham Fried performed jointly for an unexpected yet effortless duo. Three massive screens ensured everyone could see the incredible backgrounds and multiple angles of the singers. The precision to detail took this yearly event from amazing to awe inspiring. At one point the room was dark, and all that was seen was the flickering lights of the Menorah. There was a quality in the air that sparked. The reason lighting candles was chosen to commemorate the miracle of Chanukah, was that fire is the most spiritual component in our world. It doesn’t take up any physical space, and is constantly reaching upwards. Chanukah was most important a spiritual victory, which is why this musical and magical event was the appropriate way to celebrate. At one point we saw a video where The Rebbe spoke in English, an unusual and incredible moment, about the importance of Hakhel gatherings and all that these gatherings can accomplish. To affirm this idea, it was followed by a clip of Dr. James Reich featured on JEM, where Dr. Reich explains how he attended a Sunday Night ESPN NFL Dolphins game in 1987, and he saw Rabbi Tennenhaus light a huge menorah in the end zone. The strong sense of Jewish pride he felt that night changed the entire trajectory of his life. He is now observant, married with six children, and he ends off that the Dolphins won the game. Everyone was inspired and uplifted, watching these incredible inspiring clips. The joyous and meaningful music, the Menorah flames, watching the Rebbe all together, one nation united as one, was riveting! All in all it was a Hakhel night to remember. With a Rise in Antisemitism, Many More Expected to Celebrate the Seder By Rabbi Moishe Kievman Chabad Chayil April 18, 2024 Share The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated this year from sundown on Monday evening, April 22, 2024, until after nightfall on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, with its highlight, the festive “Seder” dinners on the first 2 nights of the holiday. The festival of Passover commemorates the freedom of the Jewish nation from enslavement in Ancient Egypt, some 3336 years ago, in 1313 BCE. After many decades of slavery to the Egyptian pharaohs, G‑d sent Moses to Pharaoh with a message to: “Let My People Go.” When Moses’ warnings were dismissed, G‑d sent upon Egypt ten plagues, the last one being the killing of the Egyptian firstborn while “passing over” the Jewish homes—hence the name of the holiday. To commemorate the unleavened bread that we ate when we left Egypt, we don’t eat—or even retain in our possession—any leavened grains known as chametz during the holiday. Chametz includes any food or drink that contains even a trace of wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt or their derivatives, and which wasn’t guarded from leavening or fermentation. Instead, we eat matzah—flat unleavened bread, at least for the two Seder nights, when it's a Mitzvah (biblical commandment). Our Rabbis explain that chametz is symbolic of haughtiness and egotism - traits so harmful that they are at the root of all negative traits. This is one of the reasons why even the most miniscule amount of chametz is forbidden - for these negative traits must be completely nullified. Few Jewish holidays evoke the same warm sentiments as Passover. Memories of family and friends gathered as the four cups of wine are poured, the four questions asked and the Matzah served, all contribute to Passover’s popularity in the Jewish community. Bringing the warmth and tradition of this festival to every major city in the world, Chabad is inviting all Jewish residents and visitors to participate in Community Seders to be held on April 22nd and 23rd at locations throughout South Florida. This year’s observance will be even more celebrated, as is always the case when there’s Antisemitism. Since the attacks on Simchat Torah (Oct 7) in Israel and on college campuses around the world, more and more Jews who were for whatever reason not affiliated, started coming closer to their heritage and began celebrating more. When a Jew is attacked simply because they are Jewish, they want to know more about what it means to actually live like a Jew. The Passover Seder is a feast that includes reading the Haggada, drinking wine, telling stories, eating special foods, singing, and other Passover traditions. The central observance of Passover—eating matzah, the unleavened bread—will take center stage at the Seder, with handmade round shmurah matzah, “The Rolls-Royce of matzah,” available to all. The Seders take participants through the wondrous liberation of our ancestors from Egyptian bondage, while sharing the relevance and beauty of the age-old festival in our modern lives. Included in the Seder will be a delectable catered dinner paired with a variety of fine imported wines and handmade round 'Shmurah' Matzah. Passover is not simply a celebration of the historic liberation of an ancient people. Passover is about our own personal liberation – physically, emotionally and spiritually, a message that rings true this year perhaps more than ever before in our lifetimes as we still face the challenges of the pandemic. Passover inspires us to break free from the shackles restraining us from reaching new heights – in our lives, relationships and connection with G-d.
