- Technocensorship: When Corporations Serve As A Front For Government Censors
Technocensorship: When Corporations Serve As A Front For Government Censors By John & Nisha Whitehead March 7, 2024 Share “Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.” — Harry S. Truman Nothing good can come from allowing the government to sidestep the Constitution. Unfortunately, the government has become an expert at disregarding constitutional roadblocks intended to protect the rights of the citizenry. When these end-runs don’t suffice, the government hides behind the covert, clandestine, classified language of national security; or obfuscates, complicates, stymies, and bamboozles; or creates manufactured diversions to keep the citizenry in the dark; or works through private third parties not traditionally bound by the Constitution. This last tactic is increasingly how the government gets away with butchering our freedoms, by having its corporate partners serve as a front for its nefarious deeds. This is how the police state has managed to carry out an illegal secret dragnet surveillance program on the American people over the course of multiple presidential administrations. Relying on a set of privacy loopholes, the White House (under Presidents Obama, Trump and now Biden) has been sidestepping the Fourth Amendment by paying AT&T to allow federal, state, and local law enforcement to access—without a warrant—the phone records of Americans who are not suspected of a crime. The government used a similar playbook to get around the First Amendment, packaged as an effort to control the spread of speculative or false information in the name of national security. As the House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on Weaponization of the Federal Government revealed, the Biden administration worked in tandem with Social Media companies to censor content related to COVID-19, including humorous jokes, credible information and so-called disinformation. Likening the government’s heavy-handed attempts to pressure Social Media companies to suppress content critical of COVID Vaccines or the election to “an almost dystopian scenario,” Judge Terry Doughty warned that “the United States Government seems to have assumed a role similar to an Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth.’” Restricting access to Social Media has become a popular means of internet censorship. Dare to voice politically incorrect views in anything louder than a whisper on Social Media and you might find yourself suspended on Twitter, shut out of Facebook, and banned across various Social Media platforms. This authoritarian intolerance masquerading as tolerance, civility and love is what Comedian George Carlin referred to as “fascism pretending to be manners.” Social Media censorship runs the gamut from content blocking, throttling, and filtering to lockouts, shutdowns, shadow banning and de-platforming. In fact, these tactics are at the heart of several critical cases before the U.S. Supreme Court over who gets to control, regulate or remove what content is shared on the internet: the individual, corporate censors or the government. Yet what those who typically champion the right of corporations to be free from government meddling get wrong about these cases is that there can be no free speech when corporations such as Facebook, Google or YouTube become a front for—or extensions of—government censors. This is the very definition of technocensorship. On paper—under the First Amendment, at least—we are technically free to speak. In reality, however, we are now only as free to speak as a government official—or corporate entities such as Facebook, Google or YouTube—may allow. Clothed in tyrannical self-righteousness, technocensorship is powered by technological behemoths (both corporate and governmental) working in tandem to achieve a common goal: to muzzle, silence and altogether eradicate any speech that runs afoul of the government’s own approved narrative. Thus far, the tech giants have been able to sidestep the First Amendment by virtue of their non-governmental status, but it’s a dubious distinction at best when they are marching in lockstep with the government’s dictates. As Philip Hamburger and Jenin Younes write for The Wall Street Journal: “The First Amendment prohibits the government from ‘abridging the freedom of speech.’ Supreme Court doctrine makes clear that the government can’t constitutionally evade the amendment by working through private companies.” It remains to be seen whether the Supreme Court can see itself clear to recognizing that censorship by Social Media companies acting at the behest of the government runs afoul of the First Amendment. Bottom line: either we believe in free speech or we don’t. The answer to the political, legal and moral challenges of our day should always be more speech, not less. That’s why James Madison, the author of the Bill of Rights, fought for a First Amendment that protected the “minority” against the majority, ensuring that even in the face of overwhelming pressure, a minority of one—even one who espouses distasteful viewpoints—would still have the right to speak freely, pray freely, assemble freely, challenge the government freely, and broadcast his views in the press freely. He understood that freedom for those in the unpopular minority constitutes the ultimate tolerance in a free society. The government has no tolerance for freedom or free speech of any kind that challenges its chokehold on power. At some point or another, depending on how the government and its corporate allies define what constitutes “disinformation,” “hate” or “extremism, “we the people” might all be considered guilty of some thought crime or speech transgression or other. Yet as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, it’s a slippery slope from censoring so-called illegitimate ideas to silencing truth. Eventually, as George Orwell predicted, telling the truth will become a revolutionary act. Ultimately, the government’s war on free speech—and that’s exactly what it is—is a war that is driven by a government fearful of its people. As President John F. Kennedy observed, “[A] nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.” Editor’s Note: John Whitehead is an attorney and author who has written, debated and practiced widely in the area of constitutional law, human rights and popular culture. - 9 Steps For A Lifetime Of Heart-Healthy Eating | sun-times
9 Steps For A Lifetime Of Heart-Healthy Eating By Feature Impact Jun 18, 2026 More Than Half Of Adults And About 60% Of Children In The United States Have Unhealthy Diets, Which Can Contribute To Higher Rates Of Health Factors Such As High Blood Pressure And Obesity, And Lead Directly To Poor Health Outcomes Including Death From Chronic Conditions Such As Cardiovascular Disease. These findings come from the American Heart Association, a global force changing the future of health for all, which published its "2026 Dietary Guidance to Improve Cardiovascular Health" in its peer-reviewed, flagship journal "Circulation" recommending Americans follow a lifelong healthy eating pattern that may reduce Cardiovascular Disease Risk and improve quality of life based on the latest in evidence-based science. The statement outlines nine key features of a heart-healthy dietary pattern: 1. Adjust energy intake and expenditure to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight: Try to balance how much you eat with how active you are to reach and maintain a healthy body weight. 2. Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits: Include different colors, textures and types of produce. Remember, even canned and frozen can be nutritious and affordable. 3. Choose foods made mostly with whole grains: Foods such as: whole wheat bread, brown rice and oatmeal are typically better choices than refined grains including white bread or rice. 4. Choose healthy sources of protein: Shift from meat to plant-based sources such as legumes, including beans, peas and lentils, along with nuts and seeds; regularly consume fish and seafood; select low-fat or fat-free dairy products; and, if red meat is desired, choose lean cuts, avoid processed forms and limit portion size. 5. Choose sources of Unsaturated Fats: Replace Saturated Fats with healthy UnSaturated Fats, including those from nuts, seeds, avocados and nontropical plant oils. 6. Choose minimally processed foods: Go with foods close to their natural state, with minimal added commercial ingredients, rather than those that are highly processed with additives. 7. Minimize intake of added sugars: Limit the sugar-sweetened beverages you drink and the foods with added sugar you eat. 8. Choose foods low in sodium and prepare foods with minimal or no salt: Be aware of hidden sources of sodium in prepared and packaged foods, and season food with healthier options such as herbs, spices or lemon instead of salt. 9. If alcohol is not consumed, do not start; if alcohol is consumed, limit intake: Alcohol can increase your risk for High Blood Pressure and other health conditions, so if you don't drink, don't start. "For healthy eating to be more attainable and sustainable, we recommend people focus on their overall eating pattern rather than specific nutrients or foods," said Alice H. Lichtenstein, D.Sc., FAHA, Volunteer Chair of the Scientific Statement Writing Committee and Senior Scientist and Leader of the Diet and Chronic Disease Prevention Directive at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. "Every time you choose to make a swap for a healthier alternative, you're making a step toward a healthier life." While the updated guidance is specifically designed to improve Cardiovascular Health, it's generally consistent with dietary recommendations for other conditions like Type 2 Diabetes, Kidney Disease, some Cancers and brain health as well due to shared risk factors, including High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, High Blood Sugar, excess weight and reduced kidney function. "A healthy dietary pattern can support lifelong health and well-being beyond Cardiovascular Health," Lichtenstein said. Clever Canine Finds New Career - Black Lab Sniffs Out Mold More Effectively Than Traditional Inspection Methods South Florida Sun Times Jun 5, 2025 Dogs Are Considered “Man’s Best Friend,” But Indy, A One-Year-Old Black Labrador Retriever, Had Doubts That He Would Ever Find His Fur-Ever Purpose. The Canine Was Quickly Returned To His Colorado Breeder After His Original Owners Couldn’t Make The Commitment Required For An Active Working Breed, Like Indy. Luckily, At The Same Time, Zaneta Kuzel, A Female Entrepreneur In Hobe Sound, Florida, Was Seeking A Black Lab For Her New Business Venture- A Canine Mold Detection Company. The Two Met And Mold Hunt, LLC Was Formed In March 2025. The Innovative Company Uses Indy’s Talents To Detect Mold More Effectively And Affordably In Homes, Businesses, Boats And Cars Throughout Southeastern Florida. “Black labs are notorious for their keen sense of smell and calm temperament, and that’s exactly how we found Indy - full of potential and waiting for his right purpose and home,” said Zaneta Kuzel, Founder and Owner of Mold Hunt, LLC. “Indy is energetic and focused about his work, passionate around people and always eager to earn treats for a job well done.” Kuzel’s impetus for creating the new business stems from her own personal health crisis with mold in 2024. After having a full home inspection before purchasing her 30-year-old house in Hobe Sound, FL, Kuzel was excited to start her new life. Within two weeks of moving in, Kuzel began to notice difficulty breathing and frequent coughing. As her condition worsened, she went to the ER, where she was diagnosed with pneumonia, which lasted a month. She discovered that hidden mold was lurking behind the walls in every room of her house. “Being this sick was shocking since I have a healthy, organic lifestyle and took all of the necessary precautions by getting a proper home inspection,” said Kuzel. “I realized how invisible and dangerous mold can be and knew that there had to be a better way to detect it and help others avoid what I went through.” During her recovery Kuzel discovered that dogs could be trained to detect mold and in Europe dogs have been used for this purpose for over twenty years. After researching canine services in America, the idea stuck to bring this revolutionary offering to Southeastern Florida. “When we met Indy, everything aligned: his unique capabilities, my personal experience, and our underlying mission to keep people healthy, especially in our moist, humid tropical climate.” Kuzel explains that Indy was rigorously trained and successfully completed an intensive, three-month mold detection certification program through the renowned Florida Training Academy, which taught him how to sniff out all forms of mold, including Aspergillis (blue-green), Cladosporium (olive green) and the toxic Stachybotrys (black mold), and provide visual cues to let Kuzel know the exact location of the infestation. He is one of only a handful of highly specialized mold dogs in the U.S. The Mold Hunt detection process lasts approximately one hour and consists of a thorough walkthrough of the property both inside and outside. Kuzel then gathers information about the client’s potential mold-related issues, noting any health changes in different rooms. Indy is then brought into the house to lead the inspection, sniffing out mold behind walls, in air ducts, under floors and other areas invisible to the human eye. When mold is detected, Indy alerts Kuzel by sitting down and pointing to the exact source of mold with his nose. Once the alert is confirmed, he receives a food reward and praise. The entire process is quick and more than 90% accurate. Other benefits of canine mold detection include: Non-Destructive: Unlike traditional methods that may require drilling or removing parts of one’s property, dogs find mold without any invasive techniques, preserving the integrity of a person’s home, business, car or boat. Cost-Savings: By targeting only those specific areas affected by the mold, unnecessary and costly repairs are prevented. Precise detection means spending less on invasive testing and remediation. For schools, hotels, commercial and government buildings, the affordability factor is very substantial. Experienced Professionals: The unique combination of highly trained dogs with expert handlers who have a deep knowledge of mold issues, offers the most comprehensive screening possible. Health-Focused: Mold can seriously affect one’s health, causing headaches, tightening in the chest, burning sensations in the airways, wheezing, sneezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, fever, nose bleeds, skin irritation, sinusitis, shingles, streptococcus and pneumonia, among many other illnesses. Mold Hunt helps catch mold problems early, ensuring a safer and healthier environment for individuals, families and companies. “It’s important to note that mold is not harmful to dogs since they do not inhale the dangerous particles like humans can,” adds Kuzel. “Their noses are truly cutting-edge technology!” Indy typically conducts up to four mold detections per day with ongoing training by Kuzel. When off-duty, he enjoys swimming, playing fetch at the beach, and napping in his favorite spot at home. He’s not just a working dog, but also a cherished family member. Parties interested in the service can visit: www.moldhunt.com - Or call: 858-MOLD-DOG. “We’re so excited to showcase Indy’s special training and talents to help Southern Floridians stay safe from mold,” concludes Kuzel. “We’re planning to expand our detection team with additional trained dogs and handlers to offer service throughout the entire state and eventually create educational workshops to help homeowners truly understand the health risks associated with mold.” About Mold Hunt Mold Hunt, LLC is a professional canine mold detection service for homes, businesses and personal property in the Southeastern Florida region. With their intense training and keen sense of smell, mold-sniffing dogs achieve a more than 90% accuracy rate and offer a fast, thorough non-invasive, and cost-effective review for safer living and recreational spaces. - What You Need To Know About Cholesterol - Stay In Control To Help Prevent Heart Disease, Heart Attack And Stroke
What You Need To Know About Cholesterol - Stay In Control To Help Prevent Heart Disease, Heart Attack And Stroke Family Features November 21, 2024 Share Understanding and improving Cholesterol is important for people of all ages, including children and teens. Maintaining healthy Cholesterol levels can help keep your heart healthy and lower your chances of getting Heart Disease or having a Stroke. High Cholesterol usually has no symptoms. In fact, about 38% of adults in the United States are diagnosed with High Cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association. Understanding what Cholesterol is, the role it plays, when to get screened and how to manage it are important aspects of protecting your overall health and preventing a Heart Attack or Stroke. Understanding Cholesterol A waxy, fat-like substance created by the Liver and consumed from meat, poultry and dairy products, Cholesterol isn't inherently bad for you. In fact, your body needs it to build cells and make Vitamins and other Hormones. However, too much Cholesterol circulating in the blood can pose a problem. The two types of Cholesterol are Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), which is considered "bad," and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), which can be thought of as "good" Cholesterol. Too much of the "bad" kind, or not enough of the "good," increases the risk of Cholesterol slowly building up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Cholesterol can join with other substances to form a thick, hard deposit on the inside of the arteries called plaque. This can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible - a condition known as Atherosclerosis. If a blood clot forms, it may be more likely to get stuck in one of these narrowed arteries, resulting in a Heart Attack or Stroke. Understanding Risk Your body naturally produces all the LDL it needs. An unhealthy lifestyle can make your body produce more LDL than required. Behaviors that may negatively affect your Cholesterol Levels include lack of physical activity, obesity, eating an unhealthy diet and smoking or exposure to tobacco smoke. In addition to unhealthy habits, which are the cause of High LDL Cholesterol for most people, some people inherit genes from their parents or grandparents - called Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) - that cause them to have too much Cholesterol and can lead to Premature Atherosclerotic Heart Disease. If you have a family history of FH or problems related to High Cholesterol, it's important to get your levels checked. Getting Cholesterol Checked Adults aged 20 and older should have their Cholesterol and other traditional risk factors checked every 4-6 years as long as their risk remains low. After age 40, your health care professional will use an equation to calculate your 10-year risk of Heart Attack or Stroke. People with Cardiovascular Disease, and those at elevated risk, may need their Cholesterol and other risk factors assessed more often. Managing Cholesterol If you have High Cholesterol, understanding your risk for Heart Disease and Stroke is one of the most important things you can do, along with taking steps to lower your Cholesterol. Often, simply changing certain behaviors can help bring your numbers into line. Eating a heart-healthy diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean or plant-based protein, fish and nuts while limiting red and processed meats, sodium and sugar-sweetened foods and beverages is one of the best ways to lower your Cholesterol. While grocery shopping, look for the American Heart Association's Heart-Check mark to help identify foods that can be part of an overall healthy eating pattern. Other lifestyle changes include losing weight, quitting smoking and becoming more physically active, as a sedentary lifestyle can lower HDL. To help lower both Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure, experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise a week, such as walking, biking or swimming. For some people, lifestyle changes may prevent or manage unhealthy Cholesterol Levels. For others, medication may also be needed. Work with your doctor to develop a treatment plan that's right for you. If medication is required, be sure to take it as prescribed. Controlling your Cholesterol may be easier than you think. - Bring Back The Love: Mother-Daughter Duo Shares Steps That Repaired Their Fractured Relationship
Bring Back The Love: Mother-Daughter Duo Shares Steps That Repaired Their Fractured Relationship April 4, 2024 Share This first, most important bond, the mother-daughter relationship, can be fraught with pitfalls and devastating ups and downs — the seeds for which may have been planted generations ago. Sometimes, it can seem like the conflicts have no end, leaving the mother or daughter exhausted, exasperated and sad for all that has been lost. If this sounds familiar, have no fear; help is at hand. The Mother-Daughter Relationship Makeover: 4 Steps to Bring Back the Love, written by Bestselling Author Leslie Glass and her daughter, Award-Winning Documentarian Lindsey Glass, is a guide to help readers repair the fractures in their mother-daughter relationships. Through sharing their own compelling, tumultuous history, Leslie and Lindsey help readers understand that even if mothers and daughters go off track, go to war and part ways for years, they can still find their way back to friendship, understanding and love. “When mothers and daughters don't communicate in loving ways, misunderstandings lead to heartbreak. At the end of the day we all just want to love and be loved,” explains Leslie. Lindsey adds, "It wasn't until I wrote this book that I fully understood my mom's experience as a woman and a parent. Writing brought a new level of compassion and healing to our relationship.” Leslie and Lindsey have lived through their own traumas and devastating ups and downs in their relationship. They’ve turned their experiences into a successful platform for helping others and share them here in this book. They use their own tumultuous story, told from their respective points of view, to help mothers and daughters understand that even if you go off track, go to war, part ways for years, you can still find your way back to friendship, understanding, and love. For the first time, Leslie and Lindsey will share their secret sauce for healing, broken down into four steps: • Revealing one’s backstory • Exploring emotional and personality styles • Understanding conflicts and triggers • Learning the tools to restore the love By following these steps, readers can repair their fractured relationships, keep them strong and discover a positive pathway to peace — no matter how far apart they feel they are. Dr. Deborah Sweet, Psychologist and Trauma Specialist had this to say: “I have never seen a book quite like this. Reading the perspectives of both mother and daughter was a unique experience. When we are ‘in it,’ it is hard to see past our pain. Leslie and Lindsey widened the lens on mother-daughter relationships so we could see not only the complexity of the problems, but also the journey to repair them. This makeover is a great book on making up with excellent exercises and thought-provoking writing prompts. For best results, I recommend both mother and daughter read it simultaneously and see what happens!” Leslie Glass Leslie Glass, with her daughter Lindsey, is Editor of the popular Online Recovery and Wellness Magazine Reach Out Recovery. Former Cashier Characterizes Love-Hate Relationship With Retail Work March 14, 2024 Share In Adam Kaat’s quirky two-part saga, Life on the Grocery Line and The Patron Saints of Grocery, he invites readers for a spin through the revolving door of retail employment, where colorful characters find themselves in absurd situations — some of which are laugh-out-loud funny. Kaat’s real-world, extraordinary experiences as a cashier in a high-end grocery store at the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic prompted him to write Life on the Grocery Line, a book that juxtaposes the global angst, paranoia and uncertainty of the time against a backdrop of darkly humorous, offbeat scenarios. His new book, The Patron Saints of Grocery, continues the story of protagonist Daniel, a relatable everyman who was plunged into an unprecedented reality. “Both books are meant to be humorous time capsules,” Kaat said. “Where you get a look behind the scenes at the lives of retail workers, both the good and the bad.” Although works of fiction, both books draw generously from Kaat’s own experiences and real-world interactions with customers and other employees. And both books offer eye-opening glimpses into the world of retail, where grizzled veterans butt heads with transient teenage employees, and where some of the country’s lowest paid workers are tasked every day with the immense burden of keeping their communities fed. In The Patron Saints of Grocery, Daniel is feeling the numbness stemming from an underappreciated life. New pressures from climbing the corporate ladder, protocols and regulations from the government, and the increasingly restless public all impose their wills on Daniel’s dreams. Working hard to climb the ranks feels meaningless without any recognition, and the slow grind of retail life begins to take its toll. Will he finally get the push he needs to prioritize a secret alternative life moonlighting as a panda for Social Media, or will he just fade away into the retail abyss? “It feels so good to round out the story — to tell the whole story I wanted to tell about that time in life,” Kaat added. “I think it’s going to be something that matters to a lot of people. I hope they laugh. I hope they cry.” About The Author: Author Adam Jonathan Kaat worked in a grocery store as a cashier and then as a prepared foods supervisor from January 2020 until May 2021. After college, he bounced around through the corporate world until leaving it all behind in the fall of 2019 to write his first novel. By January 2020, he had taken a job as a cashier to earn money while preserving Mental Energy for his creative pursuits. Once the COVID-19 Pandemic hit, everything changed, and he began to blog about his experiences. Eventually, those stories informed his two novels: Life on the Grocery Line and The Patron Saints of Grocery.
