- Florida Lifeline Telephone Assistance Program
Florida Lifeline Telephone Assistance Program June 8, 2021 Share The Lifeline program offers discounted telecommunications service for qualified low-income customers Households that meet low income guidelines or receive public benefits, may enroll into the LifeLine program. Florida will provide residents with discounts on their cellular or home telephone bills as part of this. It is available to families that receive some form of government assistance, as noted below, or that meet low income guidelines. There are discounts or credits provided to residents on their basic service charge, the savings are available for both cell phones as well as a household's home telephone service. Assistance is also provided when starting a new phone service, Lifeline or Link-Up, this can help pay the connection costs or deposits in Florida. In general, the customer needs to contact their cell phone provider to apply for or to request the discount. That company can also provide more information on the application process, however, it is a good idea for individuals to already have this information so they are knowledgeable when going through the process. “This is a great service for people in need, I have many customers who have benefited.” said John from the local Boost Mobile. “I will be happy to assist you if you have any questions about this benefit, they can call my store at: (954) 921-3552.” The state of Florida can also help with processing applications for Lifeline, for more information or to visit the Public Service Commission office, Call: 1 (800) 540-7039. As indicated, the credit is for people that receive some type of benefit from the state or federal government, or that meet low income guidelines. These criteria will depend on the number of people in the household too. As a general guideline, families might be eligible for Lifeline, if the household’s total income is less than 150% of the poverty guidelines that are established by the federal government. Anyone seeking a credit based on these low income levels will also need to have proof of it through their household savings and other information. For people enrolled into some form of public assistance, they will automatically qualify for a reduction in their bills. The programs that will qualify households include: Supplement Security Income (SSI), National School Lunch Program, LIHEAP, Medicaid, SNAP Food Stamps or Section 8 Housing. There are others that qualify as well, however those are some of the most common programs that Lifeline customers receive. Proof of receipt of these benefits will be required from any applicants and they can call their cellular provider to enroll or the state, for more information. Whether someone meets the income thresholds or benefit guidelines noted above, please note, if they have a free phone from from another cell carrier, then they may not be qualified for the Florida service. Individuals can decide to cancel those phones if they want, but Florida will not allow residents to enroll into multiple telephone assistance programs. Individuals can therefore only receive savings, on one phone, per household. If the state approves someone for the LifeLine discount, they will need to re-enroll each year. The income and/or other criteria will need to be satisfied on an annual basis. This is a time defined program, that is limited in scope and duration. Many people of all income levels have been turning to pre-paid cell providers in order to save money on their monthly bills. These companies will also generally participate in the Lifeline program, there may be other providers as well and the list, may change. So called standard telecommunication companies that may offer discounts include the major, national providers. However, many other smaller companies that operate in Florida, may also provide credits to income qualified customers. The state the Office of the Public Counsel, can provide the latest list. Whether a free telephone (or cell phone), financial aid for bills or discounts, assistance is offered in Florida, with a focus on senior citizens as well as very low income families. The program is administered by the Office of the Public Counsel. The mailing address is: 111 West Madison Street, Room 812, Tallahassee, Florida 32399-1400. More information is also available, by calling: 1 (800) 540-7039. You can also go to your local Boost Mobile stores for more information at the following locations: 900 North Federal Highway (US-1 & Johnson Street), you can call them at: (954) 391-7507 • 2426 Sheridan Street (Oakwood Plaza Shops), you can call them at: (954) 391-9021 • 105 South Federal Highway (Across from Grampa’s & Jaxon’s Ice Cream), you can call them at: (954) 613-5191 • 1945 Pembroke Road (Across from The Big Easy Casino, Formerly, The Mardi Gras Casino), you can call them at: (954) 251-3552. < Previous News Next News >
- Protecting Children In A Digital Age - Holiday Tips When Shopping For A Device For Your Son Or Daughter
Protecting Children In A Digital Age - Holiday Tips When Shopping For A Device For Your Son Or Daughter Family Features December 5, 2024 Share It's the time of year when you may be shopping for a digital device for your son or daughter, but you worry about the world they may come in contact with. Keeping a watchful eye on your kids requires an increasing level of tech savvy and many parents find it intimidating. Not only are your kids vulnerable to bad actors online, but your family's personal information could be at risk, as well. Learn how to protect your children and family in this digital age with these tips: Elementary-Age Children • Encourage open communication. Have conversations about what your kids see and do online and talk with them about potential dangers. Avoid lecturing in favor of an open exchange of information. • Make their inherent interest in privacy work in your favor. Kids in this age group, particularly toward the middle school years, understand the concept of privacy and value it immensely. Use that context to help them understand what goes online is there to stay. Talk about what kinds of information should always be kept private, including identifying details like addresses and social security numbers. • Stay on alert. Not all apps are completely safe (even the ones you can access from trusted stores) and not all filters are foolproof. Keep close tabs on what your kids are downloading by reading comments and reviews, and regularly monitoring what kind of content they see. Middle School and High School Kids • Continue talking about privacy. You can never have too many conversations about privacy. What seems like harmless sharing on social media can be quite revealing. For example, frequent posts about visits to a favorite store or restaurant can allow a predator to begin tracking behavior patterns that make your child a target. It's also important for kids to understand how their privacy settings work. For example, settings that allow exposure to friends of friends make their visibility to strangers much broader than they may realize. • Help manage their online reputation. Behaviors that once resulted in a day or two of hallway chatter can now live forever. Documenting mischief online is only fun until it spills over into real life and everyone sees those mistakes in full color - including prospective future employers. • Be clear about your position on bullying. From the safe distance of a screen, it's easier for kids (and adults) to say things they'd never say in person. Teach your kids to handle problems constructively offline and avoid engaging in attacks on others through social media, email and other platforms. College Students • Reinforce the risks. Once they're on their own, kids may feel more liberated to make their own choices online. However, college students are easy prey for identity theft and worse. Remind them what's at stake if they fail to protect their identity and private information, like where they live and what they do on a regular basis. • Teach smart practices. With all the independence that comes with college life, this is an ideal time for your student to take personal responsibility for his or her online security, including learning about virus protection, updating software, avoiding scams and backing up data. - Remembering Emily: Tragic Loss Drives Family To Advocate For The Flu Vaccination
Remembering Emily: Tragic Loss Drives Family To Advocate For The Flu Vaccination January 11, 2024 Share "Influenza took our child Emily from us."Joe Lastinger and his wife had no idea how serious the Flu could be. When their 3-year-old daughter Emily got sick, they took her to the doctor right away where a test confirmed she had Influenza (Flu). They brought her home and kept her hydrated and ensured she was rested, but it got progressively worse over the weekend. Within three days of her diagnosis, Emily passed away. "Her absence is a constant in our lives," Joe said. "Every milestone - whether hers or those of our other children - is missing something. While we experience the joy of such occasions, there is almost always a time when I catch my wife's eye and know that we both are thinking of Emily." Flu can impact anyone of any age, Race and Gender. While some people may be at higher risk for serious complications - such as young children, pregnant women, people 65 and older and people of any age with certain Chronic Medical Conditions such as: Asthma, Diabetes or Heart Disease - anyone can become seriously ill due to the Flu. For this reason, Pharmacist and GSK Vaccines Educator Dr. Leah Smith encourages vaccination of those six months of age and older as soon as possible, especially with the holidays in full swing and people gathering with loved ones. "While most Flu activity in the U.S. occurs from October through May, the peak is usually between December and February, so it is not too late to get your Flu Vaccination." "And, reminder - it takes about two weeks after Flu Vaccination for Antibodies that protect against the Flu to develop in the body. Holiday travelers visiting family and friends should take this timing into consideration when making a plan to get vaccinated. However, even if you're less than two weeks out from your trip, it's still worth getting vaccinated, as some protection is better than none," said Dr. Smith. Joe wants to spread his message so that other parents may avoid experiencing this painful loss. "While we could never undo our failure to help protect our daughter through vaccination, we can at least help other parents. My hope is that every time I share Emily's story, it will motivate people to take action to speak to their doctor or pharmacist about Flu Vaccination to help protect themselves and their loved ones from the Flu." How families can help protect themselves "Seasonal Flu is a very Contagious Respiratory Virus that infects the Nose, Throat and Lungs, and it should be taken seriously," explained Dr. Smith. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Flu can cause mild to severe illness. People may experience some or all of these symptoms, which usually come on suddenly, and can include: Fever, Cough, Sore Throat, Runny/Stuffy Nose, Muscle/Body Aches, Headaches, Fatigue (Tiredness), Vomiting and Diarrhea (more common in children). In addition to vaccination, Dr. Smith also recommends healthy habits such as frequent handwashing, plus staying away from anyone who is sick - and staying home from work or school when you are ill to help prevent spreading the Flu to others. Where you can receive the Flu Vaccination If you're the "Chief Health Officer" of your family, you probably want to help protect your family from the Flu, especially during Peak Flu Season. Fortunately, Flu Vaccinations are usually quick and accessible. You and your family can get vaccinated at most doctor's offices and clinics, and you can also receive Flu Vaccination in pharmacies, urgent care clinics, college health centers and even some schools or workplaces. Some pharmacies even have walk-in vaccinations. Flu Vaccinations are usually FREE for people with medical insurance, including those with: Medicaid, Medicare, ACA Plans and Private Plans. For those without insurance or a primary care physician, speak with your local pharmacist or health department about your options for the Flu Vaccination. "The singular bright spot to our story with Emily, is that we have had the opportunity to connect with other families who are on the same journey and can work together to reach other parents with our message," explained Joe, who is a founding member of Families Fighting Flu - a nonprofit group dedicated to sharing education and awareness of the seriousness of Influenza. You can make a plan to help protect yourself and your family from the Flu today. Learn more about the importance of Yearly Flu Vaccination at: www.FluIsAFamilyAffair.com < Previous News Next News >

“Great American Egg Drive” - Deb El Food Products And Gibber Family Donate 2.1 Million Eggs To Met Council For Passover Distribution Jewish Connection News Apr 23, 2026 Just Days Before Passover Began Deb El Food Products And The Gibber Family, Partnered With Met Council In The Organization’s Largest Passover Food Distribution In History, Provided More Than 3.5 Million Pounds Of Kosher-For-Passover Food That Helped Families Across New York City And Long Island Celebrate The Holiday With Dignity, Despite Rising Food Costs. As part of the Great American Egg Drive, Deb El Food Products and the Gibber Family donated 2,100,000 eggs to the Met Council’s distribution efforts, ensuring families receive this essential holiday staple. The distribution reached more than 350,000 people through 250 distribution points, conducted in partnership with 230 community organizations and local food pantries, and supported by over 800 volunteers, including government officials and community members. Supporting local communities is a cause close to the heart of America’s egg farmers, who donate eggs to food banks and hunger relief organizations year-round. This spring, the American Egg Board expanded those efforts through the Great American Egg Drive, delivering eggs directly from farms to food banks nationwide so that wholesome, nutritious protein reaches families who need it most. In the weeks leading up to Passover, the Met Council surged over $6 Million worth of food to its pantries, partners, and special distribution sites. In addition to the eggs, other staples included 61,000 pounds of matzah, over 51,000 gallons of grape juice, Kosher-for-Passover chicken, gefilte fish, tuna, apple sauce, borscht, cake mix, chopped walnuts, cocoa powder, jam, lemon juice, macaroons, matzah meal, potato starch, sugar, tomato sauce, vinegar, fresh fruits and vegetables. “We are deeply honored to give back to the communities we serve,” said Deb El Food Products Vice President Michael Gibber. “This year, we are proud to contribute over 2.1 million eggs to help more than 350,000 people celebrate Passover with dignity. Giving back is at the core of who we are, and supporting the Jewish community during this important holiday is one of the most meaningful ways we can make a difference. We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.” “Giving back to our communities is a fundamental value that has been passed down through generations,” said Deb El Food Products President and CEO Elliot Gibber. “We are committed to finding opportunities to support those we serve, and our partnership with the American Egg Board allows us to share the nutritional value of eggs with families in need. It is rewarding to see how our contributions help bring comfort and joy to so many during the holiday season.” “The generosity of Deb El Food Products and the Gibber Family in donating 2.1 million eggs was truly remarkable,” said Met Council CEO David G. Greenfield. “Thanks to their support and our partnership with the Great American Egg Drive, families across New York City and Long Island have access to this essential Passover staple. This collaboration helped make the holiday brighter for food-insecure families and underscores the power of community working together to fight hunger.” This year’s distribution reflected a significant expansion in both scale and impact. Powered by hundreds of volunteers and a network of community partners, Met Council is reaching deeper into neighborhoods and serving more families than ever before. The organization’s efforts ensure that Jewish families across the region could celebrate Passover with dignity, regardless of economic circumstances. As inflation and economic uncertainty continue to affect families year-round, the Met Council remains committed to fighting food insecurity and expanding its efforts beyond Passover, leveraging partnerships with government agencies, corporate sponsors, and community organizations to provide emergency food assistance to Jewish families in need.
