With Dan and Chris as the foundation, Guitarist Mike DeMicco and Pianist Chuck Lamb complete this dynamic quartet. Through stories told by his sons and music performed by the quartet, the show invites audiences to travel along the timeline of Dave’s extraordinary life and career. Chris and Dan Brubeck have been making music together practically all their lives. Drummer Dan and Bassist, Trombonist and Composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966. They’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of groups, performing at concert series, colleges and Jazz Festivals across North America and Europe, including the Newport, Detroit, Montreal, Playboy/Hollywood Bowl and Monterey Jazz Festivals. The quartet's most recent Album, 2018’s TimeLine, celebrated Dave Brubeck's famous 1958 State Department tour. The Album received extensive airplay in Major Jazz Markets across America and was a hit on the Jazz Week Radio Charts for five months. These versatile musicians collaborate with orchestras across the United States as well as internationally, including The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Russian National Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. In honor of Dave’s Centennial, the quartet is concentrating on his compositions with orchestral arrangements by Chris. Grammy Award Winning Vocalist Catherine Russell was born into musical royalty. • ZOA Settles Antisemitism Lawsuit Against Cherry Hill Public Schools | sun-times

ZOA Settles Antisemitism Lawsuit Against Cherry Hill Public Schools Jewish Connection News Feb 12, 2026 After Months Of Litigation, The Zionist Organization Of America (ZOA) Successfully Resolved Its Federal Lawsuit Against Cherry Hill Public Schools In New Jersey. In partnership with attorneys Jeffrey Schreiber and Stephen Meister of the Law Firm of Meister Seelig & Fein, PLLC, the ZOA filed suit on behalf of a Jewish student at Cherry Hill High School East and his parents after the student – a proud and vocal Israel supporter – was repeatedly threatened and nearly physically assaulted by other students after he documented on Social Media the provocative, dangerous, pro-terrorist Hamas conduct of fellow students. Just days after Hamas massacred over 1,200 Jews on October 7th, 2023, a group of Cherry Hill students walked through the halls of the high school enthusiastically waving Palestinian Arab flags, wearing keffiyehs, and shouting, “Free Palestine.” The complaint alleged that school and district officials not only failed to protect the Jewish student from the repeated threats he received and reported. They also retaliated against him – the victim – and harshly, undeservedly and outrageously punished him in violation of their own rules and policies, while ignoring and downplaying the conduct of his attackers. Under the settlement negotiated by the ZOA and its partners, the school district was required to (1) expunge the information and evidence related to the disciplinary action taken against the Jewish student; (2) continue to provide antisemitism education as part of its mandatory Holocaust instruction; (3) commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 24th, 2025, and commemorate it annually thereafter; and (4) during the week of April 21st, 2025, maintain a table of books in the district’s libraries that commemorated Jewish history and survival through the centuries. The settlement also required the school district to issue and post on its website a detailed statement providing data about the “skyrocketing” rise in antisemitic incidents in New Jersey and affirming that the district would “not tolerate antisemitism in any form.” The statement promised that all perpetrators of antisemitism, both staff and students, would be held accountable by the district. In addition, the statement emphasized that understanding how antisemitism can be expressed “is critical for effectively addressing” the problem and provided much-needed information to the community about the many forms of antisemitism: Included in the district’s statement was a definition of antisemitism almost identical to the widely accepted International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition, including the examples related to Israel. ZOA National President Morton A. Klein and the Director of ZOA’s Center for Law and Justice, Susan B. Tuchman, Esq., expressed their satisfaction with the terms of the settlement, stating, “We are pleased and gratified that we were able to achieve the result our clients were seeking and that justice was served. The school district took much-needed corrective steps. It also educated its community about the many forms of antisemitism and made it clear to the community that the district would have zero tolerance for all of it. It was a privilege to work again with the Law Firm of Meister Seelig & Fein, PLLC to fight the ongoing battle against the ugly surge of Jew-and Israel-hatred in our K-12 schools.” Previous Next

  • Constitution Day 2021: It’s Time to Make America Free Again

Constitution Day 2021: It’s Time to Make America Free Again By John W. Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead September 23, 2021 Share Although the Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787, a “bill of rights” was demanded and became an eventuality in order to protect the citizenry’s fundamental rights or “first liberties” against usurpation by the newly created federal government The Constitution of the United States represents the classic solution to one of humankind’s greatest political problems: that is, how does a small group of states combine into a strong union without the states losing their individual powers and surrendering their control over local affairs? Although the Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787, a “bill of rights” was demanded and became an eventuality in order to protect the citizenry’s fundamental rights or “first liberties” against usurpation by the newly created federal government. Unfortunately, although the Bill of Rights—the first ten amendments of the Constitution—was adopted as a means of protecting the people against government tyranny, in America today, the government does whatever it wants, freedom be damned. Here is what it means to live under the Constitution, post-9/11 and in the midst of a COVID-19 Pandemic. The First Amendment is supposed to protect the freedom to speak your mind, assemble and protest nonviolently without being bridled by the government. It also protects the freedom of the media, as well as the right to worship and pray without interference. In other words, Americans should not be silenced by the government. To the founders, all of America was a free speech zone. Despite the clear protections found in the First Amendment, the freedoms described therein are under constant assault. The Second Amendment was intended to guarantee “the right of the people to keep and bear arms.” Essentially, this amendment was intended to give the citizenry the means to resist tyrannical government. Yet while gun ownership has been recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court as an individual citizen right, Americans remain powerless to defend themselves against SWAT team raids and government agents armed to the teeth with military weapons better suited to the battlefield. The Third Amendment reinforces the principle that civilian-elected officials are superior to the military by prohibiting the military from entering any citizen’s home without “the consent of the owner.” With the police increasingly training like the military, acting like the military, and posing as military forces—complete with heavily armed SWAT teams, military weapons, assault vehicles, etc. It is clear that we now have what the founders feared most—a standing army on American soil. The Fourth Amendment prohibits government agents from conducting surveillance on you or touching you or invading you, unless they have some evidence that you’re up to something criminal. In other words, the Fourth Amendment ensures privacy and bodily integrity. Unfortunately, the Fourth Amendment has suffered the greatest damage in recent years and has been all but eviscerated by an unwarranted expansion of police powers that include strip searches and even anal and vaginal searches of citizens, surveillance (corporate and otherwise) and intrusions justified in the name of fighting terrorism, as well as the outsourcing of otherwise illegal activities to private contractors. The Fifth Amendment and the Sixth Amendment work in tandem. These amendments supposedly ensure that you are innocent until proven guilty, and government authorities cannot deprive you of your life, your liberty or your property without the right to an attorney and a fair trial before a civilian judge. However, in the new suspect society in which we live, where surveillance is the norm, these fundamental principles have been upended. Certainly, if the government can arbitrarily freeze, seize or lay claim to your property (money, land or possessions) under government asset forfeiture schemes, you have no true rights. The Seventh Amendment guarantees citizens the right to a jury trial. Yet when the populace has no idea of what’s in the Constitution—civic education has virtually disappeared from most school curriculums—that inevitably translates to an ignorant jury incapable of distinguishing justice and the law from their own preconceived notions and fears. The Eighth Amendment is similar to the Sixth in that it is supposed to protect the rights of the accused and forbid the use of cruel and unusual punishment. However, the Supreme Court’s determination that what constitutes “cruel and unusual” should be dependent on the “evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society” leaves us with little protection in the face of a society lacking in morals altogether. The Ninth Amendment provides that other rights not enumerated in the Constitution are nonetheless retained by the people. Popular sovereignty—the belief that the power to govern flows upward from the people rather than downward from the rulers—is clearly evident in this amendment. However, it has since been turned on its head by a centralized federal government that sees itself as supreme and which continues to pass more and more laws that restrict our freedoms under the pretext that it has an “important government interest” in doing so. As for the Tenth Amendment’s reminder that the people and the states retain every authority that is not otherwise mentioned in the Constitution, that assurance of a system of government in which power is divided among local, state and national entities has long since been rendered moot by the centralized Washington, DC, power elite—the president, Congress and the courts. If there is any sense to be made from this recitation of freedoms lost, it is simply this: our individual freedoms have been eviscerated so that the government’s powers could be expanded. Yet those who gave us the Constitution and the Bill of Rights believed that the government exists at the behest of its citizens. It is there to protect, defend and even enhance our freedoms, not violate them. It was no idle happenstance that the Constitution opens with these three powerful words: “We the people.” In other words, we have the power to make and break the government. We are the masters and they are the servants. We the American people—the citizenry—are the arbiters and ultimate guardians of America’s welfare, defense, liberty, laws and prosperity. Still, it’s hard to be a good citizen if you don’t know anything about your rights or how the government is supposed to operate. Here’s an idea to get educated and take a stand for freedom: anyone who signs up to become a member of The Rutherford Institute gets a wallet-sized Bill of Rights card and a Know Your Rights card. Use this card to teach your children the freedoms found in the Bill of Rights. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, our national priorities need to be re-prioritized. For instance, some argue that we need to make America great again. I, for one, would prefer to make America free again. < Previous News Next News >

  • A Sigh Of Relief: Hallandale High School Progress And Changes

A Sigh Of Relief: Hallandale High School Progress And Changes By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper March 22, 2024 Share A few weeks ago, I wrote to our readers about changes that were taking place in Broward County Schools. There was a sigh of relief that they were not closing Hallandale High School. This did not mean their work re-defining our schools stopped. Dr. Licata made it clear to all stakeholders that in fact everything was on the table. There could still be closed, combined schools, reproduced schools, investments in partnerships between cities and the school board, Mayor and all stakeholders have a task with making suggestions on the possibilities. The following is a letter that I submitted with a list of observations that I had gleaned from visiting all the schools and centers within the community. I had a chance to speak with many individuals about their ideas and suggestions. The work of the School Board will continue and we all need to keep an eye on their progress and changes. I want to thank you for your generosity of time during this process. While under-enrolled schools partially prompted the discussion I understand there are many other factors that have impacted our district. I commend you and the board for taking these bold steps to address vital needs to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed. I know we have discussed many of the items below but wanted to at least document them. There will always be opportunities to partner on many levels. I have discussed housing opportunities at GELC, and you mentioned opportunities at Lanier. The other is with HACC fields, but I am not certain if our own budget restraints or commission policy could support partnership investments there. Through my conversations at schools and with other stakeholders I wanted to make sure you and the board know from my observations what is lacking and what is envisioned. Programming is important and may be beneficial on a financial level as well. As long as it is in the right place and managed properly. Hallandale High School: Upgrades, Additional Programming and After-hours use. The school was slated to be rebuilt and the state stopped funding. While we all know that education for students and teaching staff is the top priority, school buildings matter. School buildings create a place of pride for students, teachers and the community. The piecemeal improvements over the years are great but some are still not complete. The school does not have proper Baseball Fields. The Football Field needs upgrades that are found at other schools. The school has lost many sports programs due to this. Parking lots are shabby. Stakeholders think the single point entry is good but could be embellished to make the entry more appealing. While these items are not critical they are important to build pride and make the school welcoming. Before I cover suggestions on programs I would like to share a global observation. “Every” principal and parent I have had a chance to speak with supports uniforms 100%. The key component was the time consumed over discipline issues over clothing. This takes administration and teachers away from their key goal of education and safety. School uniforms create a point of pride, respect, discipline, remove inappropriate distractions and create a springboard of being part of something greater than oneself. The argument of letting someone be able to express their uniqueness should be through class education and activity not clothing. In fact, bullying will always be taking place, but implementing a Countywide policy for all students will certainly help to preempt some harassment and shaming. Magnet programs serve a purpose and are a great option for focused studies, but they seem to have caused more competition among regular schools when they already face challenges from charters and choice. The way magnets are established, funded, and teachers are hired is not always maintainable. Stakeholders would like to see more training programs that will develop job skills and ability to join the workforce. I have heard many times that not all students are suitable for or can afford college. Automotive, Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Computer Skills and other trades could be offered. These courses could be given at existing schools during and/or after hours. They could be combined with GED Courses and Language Courses. Leaving school resources idle after the school day ends is not a good use for an existing school. Graduation is paramount and those students wanting and able to further their education by attending college should also be given every opportunity and access to resources found in every private school. The rest of this correspondence will be published next week, better! As always feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns and ideas to make our City better! I can be reached at: jcooper@cohb.org . Or: joycooper@aol.com . Or Facebook Mayor Joy Cooper. You can always call my Office number at: (954) 457-1318. Or Call/Text me at: (954) 632-5700. Working for you! Always have! Always will! < Previous News Next News >

  • Ups And Downs Of Thyroid Concerns

Ups And Downs Of Thyroid Concerns Chandrally “Chun” Mahajan, MPH - Chief Healthcare Correspondent June 9, 2023 Share Thyroid issues can be frustrating and the ups and downs that one goes through can affect Mental Health. Understanding the connection between Thyroid concerns and Mental Fortitude is the first step to combatting the added Stress of having these Health Issues. Moreover, trying some of the suggestions below may help improve quality of life–strengthening one’s approach in overcoming these Health Adversities. First, where is this Thyroid Gland? It is a small Butterfly-Shaped Gland that is right on the front of the Throat midway between the chin and upper chest. Be gentle when feeling it with the thumb and pointer finger. This Gland releases Hormones that are in charge of Metabolism primarily. These Thyroid Hormones can also affect Heart Rate, Body Temperature, Fatigue Levels and Mood. It is no wonder then that these Hormones being out of balance can affect one’s Mental Health. Emerging concerns of Depression, Anxiety, and altered levels of productivity could be signaling a Thyroid concern. Before taking Thyroid Supplements though, monitor Thyroid Function with a Health Professional to ensure that external substances don’t tilt the Thyroid Gland off balance. Some Supplements may not be suited for everyone so speak to aHealth Provider. Some things a provider may say if the Thyroid Gland is not functioning correctly is that these may be early clinical signs of Hyper-or-Hypo-Thyroidism. These conditions produce very different, distinct effects on the body. As a disclaimer though, just because people might have some of these symptoms, doesn’t mean they have a Thyroid problem. Similarly, just because someone may have a Thyroid problem, doesn’t mean all of these symptoms will surface. When overactive and producing too many Hormones, the Thyroid Gland is now considered to be in a HyperThyroid State. HyperThyroidism, then, is the diagnosis given to someone having an overactive Thyroid. It can cause one to be less tolerant of the heat; to sweat more; to significantly lose weight in what may be considered an unhealthy way; to have warm, moist skin; to have fine hair or thinning hair; to have visual changes; increased bowel movements; to burn through food more often; to be more hyperactive or restless or anxious than usual; or to have sleeping issues. We can also see increased Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, Palpitations, and breathing issues, along with a decline in sexual drive and possible complications for Fertility. For women in particular, HyperThyroidism can sometimes lead to Abnormal Uterine Bleeding. On the other hand, when underactive and not producing enough Hormones, the Thyroid Gland is sometimes considered to be “failing” and in a HypoThyroid state. Rather than think of it as “failing,” I like to believe that the Thyroid Gland has some room for improvement! As such, supplementation and a little help with Synthetic Thyroid Medications can go a long way to supporting an underactive Thyroid. HypoThyroidism—or the condition of having an underactive Thyroid—presents with distinct features. Some symptoms include being intolerant of the cold; sweating less; gaining weight; feeling bloated or retaining more water; being constipated; having dry, cool skin; having coarse and/or brittle hair that may come with some loss of hair; or having wrist pain. Also, this may come with feelings of fatigue, low energy or lethargy, Depression, Low Heart Rate, and breathing issues. Similar to HyperThyroidism, decreased sexual drive and complications of Infertility are possible. Women also may have Abnormal Uterine Bleeding. Should you have a number of these that have developed recently, it may be helpful to see your Health Provider for a wellness screening and to ask more about Thyroid issues. The big picture here is that this can be an overwhelming list of changes to your body that also blend into the realm of Mental Health. Understandably, Anxiety or Depression can creep into these conditions and affect one’s Overall Health. Depression is one of the most typical Mental Health Conditions linked to Thyroid difficulties. Depression is more common in people with HypoThyroidism than in people without Thyroid problems. In fact, studies have found that up to 60% of HypoThyroidism sufferers exhibit Depressive symptoms. This is so because an imbalance in the Thyroid Hormones, which are involved in controlling mood, might result in Depressed symptoms. Another Psychological Disorder that is frequently linked to Thyroid Issues is Anxiety. As we know now, Anxiety, Agitation and restlessness are all possible symptoms of HyperThyroidism. These symptoms may be incapacitating as they can dramatically and abruptly interfere with a person's daily life. So, what can be done to enhance the quality of life for people who have Thyroid and Mental Health problems? Take a look at some of these suggestions: • Engage in self-care: Taking care of your Physical and Mental Health is essential when managing Thyroid issues. Practice relaxation-based exercises like Yoga or Meditation for Stress Management. To enhance General Health, consume a balanced diet and engage in frequent exercise. • Attend a support group: Meeting people who are going through the same things as you can give you a sense of camaraderie and support. Thyroid sufferers and anyone struggling with Mental Health difficulties can find a wide variety of online support groups. One Thyroid support group on Facebook is called, “Thyroid Support Group.” • Seek Medical Attention: It's crucial to get help if you think you might have a Thyroid Issue or are having Mental Health issues. Your doctor can do tests to see if you have a Thyroid problem and can suggest appropriate treatments. Careful monitoring of Thyroid Function is essential because there are Complex Autoimmune Conditions that can start as HyperThyroidism and then progress to HypoThyroidism. Catching this early may help with long-term management of these diseases. • Take Medication as directed: It's critical to follow directions when taking any Medication, whether for Thyroid or Mental Health. Without contacting your doctor, skipping doses or quitting Medicines might suddenly make symptoms worse. • Think about Therapy: Managing the symptoms of Mental Illness can benefit greatly from Therapy. A Therapist can give you coping mechanisms and a secure environment in which to discuss your difficulties. This can go a long way in bolstering that Mental Strength! In summation, Thyroid issues can cause Mental Health Decline and decrease one’s quality of life significantly. Seemingly, and without explanation, the Thyroid can change its course and so monitoring Thyroid Function is essential. Moreso, just understanding the nature of Thyroid problems can take the pressure off. Suggestions for improving your Mental Strength to overcome Thyroid changes include practicing self-care, venting to others in a safe setting (like a support group), taking Medications or Supplements as recommended by a Healthcare Professional, and adhering to follow-up appointments with Health Providers, including a Therapist if that sounds comfortable. That’s it for now. Signing off! Contact Me: Want to learn more about what’s out there in the medical world? Put in a request at: brightenMDcare@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to report back to you about the latest trends and changes in healthcare. Please note that any medical questions must be asked to your Healthcare Provider and I am simply stating evidence-based findings. This is not to be interpreted as a professional opinion or that I am making personal recommendations for your personal care. Wishing you the best of health. Thank you! < Previous News Next News >

  • Back By Popular Demand...It's "Yesterday Once More": Top Of The World: A Carpenters Tribute Is Coming To Aventura With Holiday Classics

Back By Popular Demand...It's "Yesterday Once More": Top Of The World: A Carpenters Tribute Is Coming To Aventura With Holiday Classics July 18, 2023 Share Who can forget the music of the Carpenters? The popular brother/sister duo of the 70's and early 80's gave us some of the most unforgettable ballads and melodic pop songs of all time. By popular demand...It's "Yesterday Once More" when Debbie Taylor and her 7 piece band bring the unforgettable, exquisite music of The Carpenters in this return engagement in Aventura. Special for this year, this program will include all the classic Carpenters hits plus your Holiday Favorites to kick the season off early. The warmth and tone of Debbie's vocals are so reminiscent of Karen Carpenter, at times you'll think you're listening to Karen herself! Debbie started her career on stage at the age of 7 performing in Children’s theater. After directing numerous productions in children and community theater, her career path led her to the world of professional singing. For the past 20 years, she has been the owner and leader of ‘The Debbie Taylor Band’, a wedding, corporate, and private party band, as well as opening numerous times for Barry Gibb. The music of the Carpenters has always been close to Debbie’s heart. That sweet spot at the low end of her contralto range is a comfortable fit for singing Karen’s songs. With her passion for the music of the Carpenters, Debbie Taylor has captured the hearts of audiences around the world. Her tribute show, "Top of The World: A Carpenters Tribute," has been a hit wherever it's performed, and now it's back by popular demand in Aventura this November. The Carpenters, composed of Karen and Richard Carpenter, achieved enormous success with their unique sound and heartfelt lyrics. Their songs spoke to people's emotions, and their harmonies were simply enchanting. Even though Karen Carpenter tragically passed away at a young age, their music continues to resonate with fans old and new. Debbie Taylor and her talented 7 piece band have worked tirelessly to recreate the magic of the Carpenters' music. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the carefully crafted arrangements to the faithful reproduction of the instrumentation. But what truly sets Debbie apart is her ability to channel Karen Carpenter's vocals with astonishing accuracy. Her voice captures the warmth, richness, and vulnerability that made Karen's singing so special. For those lucky enough to attend the show in Aventura, it will be an unforgettable experience. The evening will be filled with all the classic Carpenters hits that we know and love. Songs like "Close to You," "We've Only Just Begun," and "Rainy Days and Mondays" will transport the audience back to a time when the Carpenters ruled the airwaves. But that's not all. In the spirit of the upcoming holiday season, Debbie and her band will also perform a selection of holiday favorites. Imagine hearing "Merry Christmas, Darling" or "Sleigh Ride" performed live with the same passion and tenderness that Karen Carpenter brought to these beloved songs. It's sure to be a joyous celebration that will leave everyone in the holiday spirit. Debbie Taylor's journey to becoming a premier Carpenters tribute artist is rooted in her lifelong love for music. Starting at a young age, she honed her skills on the stage, performing in children's theater and later directing productions in various community theaters. Her talent and dedication eventually led her to a career in professional singing. For the past two decades, Debbie has been the driving force behind "The Debbie Taylor Band," a highly sought-after wedding, corporate, and private party band. Her versatile vocal range and magnetic stage presence have earned her a reputation as one of the best performers in the industry. She has even had the honor of opening for legendary artist Barry Gibb, further cementing her status as a musical powerhouse. However, it is the music of the Carpenters that holds a special place in Debbie's heart. Singing Karen Carpenter's songs allows her to tap into a depth of emotion and expressiveness that resonates deeply with audiences. Her contralto range perfectly complements Karen's vocal style, making her a natural fit for the role. Meet The Band Paul Stewart has been a professional musician for more than 40 years. He is an amazingly diverse guitarist who can play in almost any genre of music. This gave him an appreciation for performing on multiple instruments including saxophones, flute, clarinet, piano, bass, and drums. Jack Ciano has performed in every facet of the music business. In the music industry he is considered an eclectic musician whose talents are always in demand. Rafael Valencia is an electric bass instructor and conductor of the salsa ensemble at Miami Dade College (Kendall Campus). He began his musical career in the United States Army singing in the Fort Benning Infantry chorus. He has traveled across the United States during his military term singing for Generals, military hospitals, and various community functions. Diana Hernandez has been involved in music her entire life. She has been singing background vocals and playing trumpet for many years. She is an ardent music lover with a diverse interest in all genres. She is a fan of the Carpenters and has always enjoyed their music. This is a project of love and passion for incredible music and to be shared with my fellow Carpenters fans. As November approaches, anticipation builds for "Top of The World: A Carpenters Tribute." Fans in Aventura and beyond eagerly await the chance to experience the timeless music of the Carpenters once again. It's a testament to the enduring legacy of Karen and Richard Carpenter that their songs continue to captivate audiences and inspire new generations of musicians. So mark your calendars and get ready to be transported back in time. Join Debbie Taylor and her exceptional band as they pay homage to the Carpenters' musical genius. Sing along to the hits, embrace the holiday spirit, and relish in the nostalgia that comes with hearing these beloved songs live. It's an opportunity you won't want to miss.
