Celebrating Diverse Heritage: Robust Public Programming in May At The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami April 28, 2022 Share In the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA)’s continued efforts to include diverse voices and perspectives, the museum is offering a robust series of education and public programming to celebrate both Haitian Heritage Month and Asian Pacific American Heritage Month throughout the month of May. Due to popularity, MOCA’s Exhibition “My Name is Maryan” was extended until Sunday, October 2nd, 2022. Curated by Alison M. Gingeras, the Exhibition is a Monographic presentation of four decades of paintings, sculptures, drawings and film by the Iconoclastic, Ground-Breaking Polish-Born Artist, Maryan. Drawing upon new scholarship and a trove of never-before-exhibited works, “My Name is Maryan” is the first retrospective to holistically examine all periods of Maryan’s life and work. Throughout the Museum, Maryan’s extraordinary biography and prolific oeuvre represent a deeply moving monument to the perseverance of the human spirit and power of art to work through traumatic loss. Credited as being among the first artist-eyewitnesses to directly depict their experiences of the Shoah, Maryan's unique approach to figurative art strove to solidarity across cultures and generations. A catalog for “My Name is Maryan” is forthcoming this summer. After closing in October, the Exhibition will then travel to The Tel Aviv Museum Of Art. Voting ends on Friday September 18th, 2026 A Few Featured From Florida: Eddie, Category - Service/Guide, Hometown: Miami, Florida, Breed: Labrador Retriever, Age: 3, Superpower: Being a lifeline for his handler: Eddie has changed far more than how his owner travels—he's transformed how he lives. As his first guide dog, Eddie gave a natural introvert the confidence to step into the spotlight and share their journey publicly, educating others about blindness and the remarkable work guide dogs do. Eddie has become more than a partner; he's an ambassador, opening doors one interaction at a time. His most impressive gift is instinct. While crossing a busy street in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Eddie suddenly planted his feet and refused to move—seconds later, a car sped past exactly where they would have been. It's one of countless times his quick thinking kept his owner safe before danger was ever sensed. Off-duty, this 70-pound "puppy" becomes pure joy: yard time, couch cuddles, and a nightly grooming ritual he adores. Whether the moment calls for adventure or quiet, Eddie always meets his owner there—wagging, devoted, and endlessly ready to make life better. K9 Lea - Category: Military, Hometown: Fernandina Beach, Florida, Breed: Labrador Retriever, Age: 4, Superpower: Focus amid chaos: While the world watches history unfold at events like the Super Bowl and the Presidential Inauguration, K-9 Lea is focused on what no one else can see. As an explosive detection K9 with the United States Coast Guard, Lea has swept the high-security grounds of Washington, D.C., secured packed stadium crowds, and stood watch over the global stage of the FIFA World Cup. Her most impressive moment came after the New Year’s Day terrorist attack in New Orleans, when Lea deployed to assist investigators and detected explosive odor aboard a ferry connected to the suspect, a discovery that provided a critical lead in the case. Lea's gift is a kind of laser focus, tuning out flashing lights, crowds, and chaos to zero in on the danger that matters. Off duty, she's an entirely different dog: a goofy, happy beach lover who chases waves and never lets on that she quietly helps protect the nation's biggest moments. Raleigh Roo - Category: Emerging Hero, Hometown: Clearwater, Florida, Breed: Terrier Mix, Age: 6, Superpower: Courage and Resilience: Raleigh Roo’s story is one of extraordinary resilience and hope. After enduring severe neglect and abuse, he faced the amputation of one hind leg, followed by an extensive reconstruction of the only remaining back leg. Despite every obstacle, Raleigh Roo has never let adversity define him. Instead, his joyful spirit, boundless determination and unwavering love of life inspire everyone he meets. Whether greeting strangers with a wagging tail or brightening someone’s day with his infectious enthusiasm, Raleigh Roo reminds people that healing is possible and happiness can triumph over hardship. His remarkable journey has become a source of encouragement for countless individuals facing their own challenges, proving that courage isn’t measured by what you’ve endured, but by how you choose to move forward. Raleigh Roo’s resilience and ability to spread hope make him a true emerging hero. The 16th Annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards is proudly sponsored by Nubz, Trupanion and Waymo. • Experience Expressive Works With A Dramatic Flair - SFSO Presents A Program Bursting With Bohemian Joy And Nordic Intensity | sun-times

Experience Expressive Works With A Dramatic Flair - SFSO Presents A Program Bursting With Bohemian Joy And Nordic Intensity South Florida Sun Times Feb 25, 2026 South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), Led By Award-Winning Music Director Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso, Presents A Program Bursting With Bohemian Joy And Nordic Intensity. Dvorak’s Beloved Symphony No. 8 Radiates Warmth While Sibelius’ Violin Concerto Featuring Special Guest Artist Siwoo Kim Stirs The Soul. Schubert’s Overture In D major (In The Italian Style), A Playful Wink To Rossini’s Famed Operas, Opens The Program On Tuesday, March 10th, 2026 at New World Center In Miami Beach, Located At 500 17th Street, Miami, Florida 33139 And On Wednesday, March 11th, 2026 At The Parker In Fort Lauderdale, Located At 707 Northeast 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304. Both Performances Begin At 7:30 p.m. Also On Tuesday, March 10th, 2026 At New World Center, Enjoy A Pre-Concert Chat 30 Minutes Before The Concert With Dr. Alan Mason, Professor Emeritus Of Music At Barry University For In-Depth Conversation And Insights About The Works And Composers. “Dvorak’s Eighth is like a love letter to his native Bohemia — you can hear that passion for his homeland burst through every note. It’s one of his most beloved symphonies, and it is as joyful to perform as it is to hear," says Maestra Alfonso. "Having Siwoo Kim, one of my favorite guest artists, return to perform Sibelius’ Violin Concerto provides a striking contrast. It’s breathtakingly demanding for the soloist, darkly romantic, and emotionally charged from start to finish. And it all begins with a delightful nod to Rossini with Schubert’s Overture in D major (In the Italian Style). It’s like visiting Prague, Finland, and Italy all in one night. I’m looking forward to the journey.” Radiant melodies and rustic charm define Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8, a heartfelt tribute to his Bohemian homeland. Composed at the height of his career and inspired by the countryside surrounding Prague, the symphony brims with birdsong-like themes, folk rhythms, and sweeping lyricism. Joyful and deeply expressive, Dvorak’s Eighthcaptures the spirit of Bohemia and the heartbeat of Prague. Haunting lyricism and virtuosic fireworks come to life in Jean Sibelius’ emotionally expressive Violin Concerto, the only concerto he composed in his lifetime. Written during a turbulent time in the composer’s life, the expressive brilliance of returning SFSO guest artist Siwoo Kim, will bring a passionate take on the demanding and dramatic work. Siwoo Kim is an “incisive” and “compelling” violinist (The New York Times) who “plays with stylistic sensitivity and generous tonal nuance” (The Chicago Tribune). Kim actively performs as soloist and chamber musician and he is the Founding Co-Artistic Director of VIVO Music Festival in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Since his Carnegie Hall concerto debut with the Juilliard Orchestra, he has gone on to perform as soloist with orchestras in four different continents including Tucson Symphony, Houston Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Seongnam Philharmonic, Johannesburg Philharmonic, and Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie. As chamber musician, he performs regularly at festivals. He is the principal violinist of Music From Copland House. An advocate of new music, Kim premiered and recorded Samuel Adler’s only violin concerto with Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt on Linn Records. Along with ECCO (East Coast Chamber Orchestra), Siwoo recently made the premiere recording of Michael Torke’s “Last,” a 12-movement work for solo violin and string orchestra. Hoping to gain an operatic commission from the Viennese theaters, Franz Schubert wrote two operatic overtures “in the Italian style” in 1817. His Overture in D major, composed of several tunes, and laden with Schubertian harmonic changes, is zesty, filled with operatic flair, and is pleasingly adorned with unmistakable charm. SFSO’s 28th Season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts, where the bold and the sublime intersect, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today’s most compelling and celebrated musical voices. SFSO’s upcoming finale performance on Wednesday, April 8th, 2026, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304 will burst with color and power evoking visions of sun-drenched skies in Mendelssohn’s “Italian” and the dark mysticism of Scotland in his Hebrides Overture “Fingal’s Cave.” This season’s illuminating musical journey ends with the graceful, yet high-spirited Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores including Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Back to the Future, featuring the iconic films screened live with audio and musical accompaniment, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres.
