  • Get Ready For King Tides | sun-times

Get Ready For King Tides City of Hollywood Sep 10, 2026 Unusually High Tides, Also Known As King Tides, Are Expected In Hollywood This Week And Periodically Through December. King Tides Are Seasonal High Tides That Can Cause Flooding In Low-Lying Areas. Rising Sea Levels And Inclement Weather Can Further Increase Flooding Risks. Rainfall, Wind Strength And Direction, Sea Surface Temperatures And Other Conditions Can Also Affect Water Levels, Causing Tides To Come In Higher Or Lower Than Predicted. With seven miles of shoreline, 7.9 miles of canals and flat topography, Hollywood is particularly vulnerable to the effects of sea level rise and tidal flooding. Based on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) tide predictions, above-average high tides are expected during the following periods: • September 9-13 • September 26-October 1 • October 7-13 • October 24-31 • November 5-11 • November 22-28 • December 5-8 The seasonal peak is currently expected around October 27th. Actual tide elevations may be higher than predicted depending on conditions including wind, rainfall and sea surface temperatures. High seasonal tides can cause flooding along coastal roads and in low-lying neighborhoods, parking lots and docks. Water levels may rise by more than two and a half feet during high tide. Motorists are urged to use caution, avoid driving through flooded streets and seek alternate routes when necessary. The City continues to implement short- and long-term solutions to minimize the impacts of tidal flooding. Flap gates have been installed within the stormwater system to help prevent tidal water from flowing back through storm drains. Auxiliary pumps are also stationed in high-risk areas to help clear flooded streets as quickly as possible. Enhanced Weekly Tidal Forecasts Available The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), in partnership with the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, now provides enhanced, locally customized tide predictions based on NOAA forecasts. The enhanced forecasts account for factors including sea level rise, weather conditions, wind speed and direction, sea surface temperature and swell energy to provide a more complete picture of potential tidal conditions. Automated King Tide forecasts are available through SFWMD’s Resilience Metrics Hub for seven tidal stations across South Florida, including Port Everglades. Residents can also subscribe to SFWMD’s Weekly Tidal Outlook Forecast by visiting the District’s email subscription page and selecting “King Tide Forecast.” Make a Difference in Your Neighborhood Residents can also help reduce localized flooding by adopting a catch basin in their neighborhood. City crews work to maintain more than 157 miles of underground stormwater piping and approximately 4,900 catch basins throughout Hollywood. Through the Adopt a Catch Basin program, residents can help by checking an adopted basin at least once a month, clearing leaves and other debris as needed and submitting proof of their efforts to earn points toward rewards. Residents can further help keep storm drains clear by placing coconuts in their garbage carts for collection and properly disposing of lawn clippings and yard waste rather than allowing debris to enter the stormwater system. To participate in the Adopt a Catch Basin program, visit: HollywoodFL.org/AdoptACatchBasin . 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at Fire Station 31 Hollywood Fire Rescue will host its annual 9/11 Ceremony from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Friday, September 11th, 2026 at Fire Station 31, 3401 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, Florida 33021. The ceremony will honor the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, recognize the bravery and sacrifice of first responders, and reflect on the enduring spirit of service inspired by the events of that day. Parking will be available at the David Park Community Center, 108 North 33rd Court, Hollywood, Florida 33021. • Buy Local: Save $$$ By Buying Fresh Fruits And Veggies

Buy Local: Save $$$ By Buying Fresh Fruits And Veggies June 29, 2023 Share Cooking meals that bring your loved ones joy is often objective No. 1 but creating those flavorful favorites on an appropriate budget is an important aspect of well-rounded, family-friendly recipes. A few simple steps, like developing good grocery shopping habits, or shopping for locally grown produce can put smiles on hungry faces without leaving a dent on your finances. Consider these tips from the experts at Healthy Family Project along with its produce partners, which are on their 2023 Mission for Nutrition to improve access to fresh produce that's essential in alleviating many public health and personal wellness challenges. This year's partners are striving to be part of the improvement efforts by donating funds to increase the accessibility to fruits and vegetables in schools through the Foundation for Fresh Produce. Make A List And Stick To It When buying fresh produce, remember some items have a shorter shelf life. Limiting purchases to items on your list can help lower grocery spending while alleviating food waste. Buy Local Transportation cost is one of the biggest factors in the price of produce, meaning buying local, when possible, can help reduce your total at checkout. Here are a few options where you can find locally grown produce that is not only fresh and tasty but also can save you a few dollars. Every Wednesday at Gateway Park in Sunny Isles Beach you can shop for local produce at the Gateway Market in Gateway Park, 151 Sunny Isles Blvd. The Market is the place to be to find local produce and artisanal foods every Wednesday night from 5:30 – 10 PM. For those of you who would rather shop indoors for local produce you can visit, The Aventura Market. The largest indoor market in South Florida, The Aventura Farmers Market has shown local love to South Florida farmers and artisans for more than 20 years. Representing the region’s talented culture melting pot, The Aventura Farmers Market open all weekend long, showcases a diverse array of exotic foods, fresh produce, and desserts. To check the schedule of the next Aventura Farmers Market visit: https://aventuramall.com/aventura-market/ If you live closer to Hollywood you can stop at the Yellow Green Farmers Market, 3080 Sheridan Street. The Yellow Green Farmers Market is dynamic outdoor venue that connects local producers and artisans with the community, it's a one stop shop for local produce. Befriend the Produce Manager If you prefer to get all your produce and groceries at one store, get the know the produce manager at your store. Throughout each week, a "hot buy" may come into the store that didn't make it into the weekly ad. This happens with items at the end of their seasons, in particular, or if a crop is doing well. Chat with the produce manager at your local store and he or she may inform you of special prices. Know Your Produce Department The front or feature table of the produce department often offers the best deals. Don't forget to look at the end caps on each produce aisle, which sometimes display seasonal items. Stock Up on Seasonal Produce Although you can generally find any produce item at any time of year, this isn't always an affordable practice. Knowing when your favorite fruits and veggies are in-season can save you money and allow you to use the freshest ingredients in family breakfasts like Protein-Packed Sausage Breakfast Muffins and Savory English Muffins. Protein Packed Diced Onion Sausage Breakfast Muffins • Nonstick cooking spray • 1 Sweet Onion, diced • 1 Pound of Turkey Sausage • 4 Eggs • 1/2 Cup of shredded Cheddar Cheese • 1 Cup of Protein Pancake mix Preheat the oven to 350 F. Spray a 12-Cup muffin pan with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside. In a skillet over Medium Heat, cook the Sweet Onion until it is translucent. Add the Turkey Sausage and cook it until it is no longer pink and remove it from the heat. In a large mixing bowl, lightly beat the Eggs. Add the shredded cheese, the Pancake mix and the cooked Sausage and mix it well. Fill prepared muffin cups about 3/4 full with the mixture. • The First Play To Explore The Aftermath Of October 7th - Miami New Drama Announces World Premiere Of Jonathan Spector’s Birthright | sun-times

The First Play To Explore The Aftermath Of October 7th - Miami New Drama Announces World Premiere Of Jonathan Spector’s Birthright Jewish Connection News Apr 1, 2025 Miami New Drama (Michel Hausmann, Artistic Director; Nicholas Richberg, Managing Director) Proudly Presents The World Premiere Of Birthright, A Groundbreaking New Play By Jonathan Spector (Eureka Day, Broadway), One Of The Most Daring Playwrights Of Our Time. Directed By Teddy Bergman (Urinetown, Encores!), Birthright Is An Unflinching, Deeply Personal Theatrical Event That Examines The Shifting Tides Of Jewish Identity, The Cost Of Belonging, And The Fault Lines That Divide Us. Spanning 18 years, Birthright follows six young American Jews who meet on a Birthright Israel trip in 2006, bound together by the intoxicating allure of connection—to each other, to heritage and to history. What begins as a transformative journey soon collides with reality as Social Media, shifting global politics and personal reckonings pull them apart. When the world is upended by the events of October 7th, 2023, their bonds fracture, leading to an explosive confrontation with identity, loyalty, history and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are. A Historic Theatrical Moment With Birthright, Miami New Drama presents the first major stage production to grapple with the aftermath of October 7th—a moment that has reshaped Jewish identity, political discourse and generational divides. This landmark work reckons with the complexity of history, trauma and the shifting nature of belonging, offering a deeply human exploration of a world irrevocably altered. “The horrific events of October 7th and the bloody wars that followed sent shockwaves across the globe, unleashing a surge of antisemitism and creating deep fractures within the Jewish community—dividing friends, families and generations. This play does not offer easy answers, but it dares to ask the hardest questions,” said Michel Hausmann, Artistic Director of Miami New Drama. “When Michel asked me 18 months ago to write a play about the aftermath of October 7th, I initially declined, feeling that everything was already being said. But he persisted and I began speaking with American Jews across the political and religious spectrum,” said Jonathan Spector. “A common theme emerged: the deepening rifts among Jews, even among those once close. The fracture within the American Jewish community is the most severe in my lifetime, likely in its history. This play isn’t about Israel and Palestine but about the divisions within the American Jewish community in response to these events and the long path leading to this point.” Director Teddy Bergman: "I'm humbled to be working on this singular new work at a groundbreaking theater like Miami New Drama with this incredible cast and team. One of Jonathan's extraordinary gifts is to put the world as many of us experience it right now onstage without reducing any of its complexities and contradictions. He has a kind of x-ray vision, seeing to the heart of what is happening to us today and presenting it with so much insight and compassion. This couldn't be truer of Birthright - a vital play for a fractious time." About The Production Commissioned as part of Miami New Drama’s YK6 Jewish Play Initiative, Birthright is the latest work from a playwright known for his incisive, thought-provoking storytelling. The YK6 Initiative, created in partnership with Wasserman Projects, is dedicated to commissioning and producing plays that elevate Jewish stories, histories and cultural discourse in the theatrical landscape. Miami New Drama is committed to theater that reflects, responds to and shapes the world we live in. Hausmann adds, “We collaborate with the most daring and visionary theater artists of our time to engage with the most pressing contemporary issues. That’s why we are honored to be working with master theatre makers like Jonathan Spector, Director Teddy Bergman and this extraordinary cast, whose talent and insight bring this urgent story to life.” This theatrical production is brought to life by the following powerhouse team of visionary artists: An Award-Winning Creative Team: • Playwright: Jonathan Spector (Eureka Day, Broadway; NYT Critic’s Pick) • Director: Teddy Bergman (Urinetown, Encores!; KPOP, Broadway) • Assistant To The Director: Emalie Belokon • Intimacy Director: Jeni Hacker • Lighting Design: Jeff Croiter • Sound Designer/Composition: Salomon Lerner • Costume Designer: Nicky Smith • Assistant Costume Design: Yaya • Wig Designer: Carol Raskin • Projection Designer: Steven Royal • Props Designer/Supervision: Jameelah Bailey • Assistant Props Designer: Constanza Celsi • Scenic Designer & Projections: Adam Koch Associates • Stage Manager: Amy Rauchwerger • Assistant Stage Manager: Jennifer Barnes Mathie Cast of Birthright: • Dani Stoller as Chaya, a woman in search of community. • Krystal Millie Valdes as Alona, who is in search of home. • Arielle Goldman as Izzy, who is in search of justice. • Stephen Stocking as Noah, who is in search of understanding. • Danny Capote as Emerson, who is in search of serenity. • Hale Appleman as Lev, who is in search of meaning. • Irene Adjan as Deborah, Chaya’s mother, who wonders—what’s with all the searching? In addition, for every child who loses their life to drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries. The Y’s swimming programs are paramount because formal swimming lessons reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%. Annually, more than 50,000 children and adults are taught drowning prevention and water safety techniques at the YMCA of South Florida. Many of these lessons are funded through the Y’s Aquatic Financial Assistance Program, making them accessible to all. The Y has an eight-lesson drowning prevention program, where children learn to be safe in and around the water. The Y’s Mobile Aquatics program also travels to low-income neighborhoods to teach water safety to children and their caregivers. • Not In Our City!

Not In Our City! By Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach Mayor January 5, 2022 Share Hallandale Beach Uses Technology To Fight Crime In my last article I started to address the changes being implemented in our Police Department. Ironically the ShotSpotter technology was triggered on December 28th, 2021 and December 29th, 2021. On December 28th, 2021 the ShotSpotter alarmed patrol to shots being fired on Northeast 1st Avenue and along Northeast 5th Street. Patrols arrived at the scene and found multiple bullet casings. Two minutes later a car crash was witnessed at Pembroke Road and 1st Avenue. Witnesses reported a gray Charger at high speed and hit another car. The car fled and Hollywood Police pursued the car into Miami-Dade County. The car was stopped and was riddled with bullets. There were two suspects who were arrested and linked to the shooting. Hollywood Police were the arresting agencies and took over the investigation. On December 29th, 2021, the alarm sent patrols to the underpass at I-95 and West Hallandale Beach Boulevard. While on route it was reported a white male was laying on the road. At the scene, the victim told officers that an unknown person shot into his vehicle hitting both of his arms. Since the underpass is the BSO's jurisdiction, the BSO took over the investigation. While the last thing we needed was more shootings, now we know that this technology provides real time information when shots are being fired. It helps to fight crime and gets criminals off the street. Technology to fight crime is not new to our city, we have implemented body worn cameras on all officers after a trial period. These cameras assist in so many ways. They obviously document interactions between the public and the officers. The recordings help to provide evidence when an arrest is made. The films also become a training tool. In November they even captured our officers’ saving men from a burning vehicle. In addition to these technologies years ago we implemented cameras in many of our parks and municipal facilities. The ultimate goal was to have cameras throughout our City and have them linked to a main monitored hub at our new Fire Station. Regretfully with the changes in management, many new technologies and upgrades were delayed. We are now truly focused on fully implementing. In 2021, the City Of Hallandale Beach Police Department had installed Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras at eleven of the largest traffic arteries in and out of the City to include: I-95 and West Pembroke Road (East), North Dixie Highway and Pembroke Road (South), Northeast 1st Avenue and Pembroke Road(North), North Federal Highway and Pembroke Road(South), Atlantic Shores Boulevard and Northeast 14th Avenue(North and South), 2500 East Hallandale Beach Boulevard (West), Ocean Drive/A1A (North), South Federal Highway and Countyline Road (North and South), Southeast 1st Avenue and Countyline(North) South Dixie Highway and Countyline Road (South) and I-95 and West Hallandale Beach Boulevard (East and West). These readers help us to target stolen vehicles and report tags that have been in crimes. In 2022, the Hallandale Beach Police Department will expand the ALPR system and the Public Safety Camera (CCTV) system to an additional four ALPRs locations and an additional forty-nine replacement CCTVs at twelve new locations. The cameras will be strategically installed at the following locations along Foster Road and Federal Highway. Residents need to know that their taxpayer dollars and a partnership with the CRA have been helping to ensure we have a State-of-the-art Police Department. We need to continue to equip our officers to fight crime within our City. Tolls and training go hand in hand. There have been many focus groups around that country on modern day policing. I have been following this issue for awhile and I must say I cannot buy into all the rhetoric. We as a society need to realize that there is serious crime in our communities. We need to fight crime and not sugar coat it. Police are here to protect and serve. The super majority are great public servants. I have fielded so many calls about continued crime and the need for more presence and getting tougher not reducing or changing the way we police. With the proper tools, training and leadership in the department we can send the message “Not in our city!“ As residents we too need to be proactive. Please call and report crime. You may think it does not help but it truly does. The more reports and documentation we have provides much needed information to monitor and track criminal activity so that we can address the problems head on. As always feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns and ideas to make our City a great place to live, work and play! I am available by phone or text at: (954) 632-5700. • Mind Over Milliseconds - Mental Resilience At The Miami Grand Prix | sun-times

Mind Over Milliseconds - Mental Resilience At The Miami Grand Prix By Chandrally Mahajan, Chief Healthcare Correspondent Special Coverage from the 2025 Miami GP May 9, 2025 At the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, precision was everything—and still, it wasn’t always enough. During Day 1 qualifying practice, two drivers clocked identical lap times down to the thousandth of a second, momentarily tying for first place. For a brief, electrifying instant, they were on top—until another two racers delivered laps just milliseconds faster, coming in close together and knocking their competitors down to third and fourth. The ruthless reshuffling continued, etched onto the leaderboard in cold, unforgiving numbers: 1:28.0, then +0.3, +0.5, and so on. No one made a mistake. They were simply... outpaced. Watching it unfold doesn’t feel like failure. It feels rather like emotional whiplash—like putting your entire soul into something, only to watch it be outrun by the tiniest margin imaginable. Mental Endurance at High Speeds When things go wrong, F1 drivers don’t have time to get upset or dwell. They use short phrases or breathing techniques to keep going. Their brains learn to compartmentalize by blocking out fear and staying calm under pressure. Moreover, they focus on the next lap. This ability to reset and move forward helps them stay confident and not spiral into self-blame. That’s what mental endurance looks like—staying focused, even when pressure mounts. The Neuroscience of High-Speed Decision-Making Formula 1 drivers operate under immense cognitive demand. Decisions are made at over 200 mph, where delays of even 100 milliseconds can cost critical positions. Neurologically, this kind of performance is powered by lightning-fast sensorimotor processing, intense prefrontal cortex regulation, and deeply rehearsed muscle memory. Drivers must suppress panic responses while staying hyper-attuned to micro-adjustments in grip, track conditions, and physical mechanics—all while strategizing positionally. The Calm Before the Storm The day began with foreshadowing. A red flag late in practice brought the session to a halt after a driver clipped the wall near Turn 1. The contact was minor, but the symbolism wasn’t. This track doesn’t tolerate hesitation. In F1, the margin of error is so slim, even a whisper of overcorrection can end your day. Teamwork in the Pit Pit stops happen in under three seconds. The crews resemble a trauma surgical unit more than a garage team. Each movement is rehearsed, choreographed, and timed to perfection. They embody “group flow,” a psychological state where communication becomes intuitive and roles dissolve into seamless execution. Any hesitation or ego can derail performance. It’s not just about speed; it’s about working as a unit. Fandom, Identity, and the Psychology of Spectating F1 spectators don’t just watch—they feel. The crowd surges with adrenaline, anticipation, and tribal loyalty. Wearing team colors or chanting a favorite driver’s name isn’t superficial, it’s a form of identity affirmation. Psychologically, sports spectatorship provides a sense of belonging, catharsis, and even physiological changes due to intense emotional investment—mimicking the highs and lows of direct competition. Staying Calm in Chaos One veteran incident marshal, who has worked high-risk posts at international circuits including last year’s Mexican Grand Prix, recalled a moment where they narrowly avoided serious injury during a chaotic race start. Ducking quickly when a car launched off the line unexpectedly, this story highlights the importance of staying calm but vigilant. These workers on the sidelines are just as mentally strong as the drivers on the track. What This Teaches Us Not everyone is a race car driver. But we all know what it’s like to work hard and still not come out on top. We all have moments where we think we’ve won—only to see things change at the last second. This sport quickly showed me that doing your best doesn’t always mean winning. What matters is staying steady, adapting fast, and continuing forward. This was demonstrated by the F1 drivers when they returned later that day for the sprint qualifying. SQ1: Echoes of Earlier Chaos With just over two minutes left in the first Sprint Qualifying (SQ1) race, that same, rare phenomenon unfolded as three drivers settled in with matching lap times, locked in a dead heat at the top of the board: Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Kimi Antonelli. It was déjà vu. The leaderboard froze. Fans held their breath. And just like in practice, it came down to a final push. George Russell delivered—a lap of 1:27.6 that broke the tie and sent the rest tumbling. SQ2: Precision Under Pressure SQ2 saw tension rise another level. With a 1:27.3, Oscar Piastri lit up the board early, followed closely by Norris and Antonelli—again separated by mere tenths. Verstappen and Russell hovered in the mix, while Hamilton edged in at tenth with a solid final effort. In the closing seconds, Norris took the top spot. But it wasn’t by domination, it was by 0.1 seconds (s). The heartbreak wasn’t theatrical, it was clinical. It lived in the timing data, not yet in the faces of the audience. SQ3: The Final Push The final session delivered everything fans could’ve hoped for. Russell opened strong, posting a 1:26.7. Verstappen trailed by just 0.2s. Albon shocked many by sliding into third—momentarily. And then came Kimi Antonelli. The rookie driver, cool under pressure, nailed his lap: 1:26.4. Clean, fast, and unfazed with a staggering time that redefined the grid. Piastri came within 0.045s. Norris followed at 0.1s. Final Top 10 Qualifying Results: Antonelli – 1:26.4, Piastri – +0.0s, Norris – +0.1, Verstappen – +0.2, Russell – +0.3, Leclerc – +0.3, Hamilton – +0.5, Albon – +0.7, Hadjar – +1.0, Alonso – +1.3 What It Means The first Italian to take the pole 1 position in Miami didn’t do it with luck. He did it with precision and poise. This is a tremendous advantage as it determines the starting grid on race day. Antonelli showed that pressure doesn’t break everyone—sometimes, it sharpens them. And that’s the story of this qualifying day: the ones who kept calm, adapted fast, and didn’t flinch were the ones who rose. This wasn’t chaos. It was evolution. And for anyone watching—whether you’re a driver, a student, or someone just trying to push through the unknown—it was inspiring. Day 3: Final Race Though Antonelli had the P1 position, he was unable to stay in the top 5 as the race took a surprising turn. We saw Norris rise quickly to the top, but suddenly he was eclipsed by none other than his McLaren teammate, Piastri with a smooth and flawless 1:28.5. Final Top 10 Race Results: Piastri – 1:28.5, Norris – +4.6s, Russell – +37.6, Verstappen – +39.9, Albon – +48.0, Antonelli – +55.5, Leclerc – +57.0, Hamilton – +60.1, Sainz – +60.5, Tsunoda – +74.4 When Effort Isn’t Enough Formula 1 isn’t just about speed. It’s about heartbreak, recalibration, and the kind of focus that outlasts disappointment. You can be flawless—and still get bumped. You can hit the exact same mark as the person ahead of you—and still land behind them. That’s not just racing. That’s life. The real lesson echoes mental flexibility. Can you stay calm while the rankings shift? Can you push again when it feels like the moment passed? Can you find value in the effort even when the result falls short? As a medical student applying to psychiatry, what struck me most wasn’t just the speed, it was the silence as drivers exited their cars. The deep, practiced calm each driver shows after heartbreak. It mirrors the same discipline we’re taught in medicine: show up, stay steady, and keep going—even when you don’t know the outcome. That’s the lesson racing gives back to the rest of us. Focus only on what you can control: not the clock or the conditions, but your actions and most importantly, your mind. In a world ruled by uncertainty and time is unforgiving, resilience is the only way to keep driving forward. Mind over milliseconds isn’t just a racing principle. It’s a way to live. That’s it for now. Signing off! Contact Me Want to learn more about what’s out there in the world of medicine and human behavior? • Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Emergency Care Technician Awarded - Jessie Salone Nursing Scholarship | sun-times

Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Emergency Care Technician Awarded - Jessie Salone Nursing Scholarship South Florida Sun Times May 21, 2026 This National Nurses Month, the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital and Memorial Foundations are highlighting one of the Foundations' longest-running nursing awards and its most recent recipient. The Foundations recently awarded the Jessie Salone Student Nurse Scholarship to Macy Grimsrud, a Fort Lauderdale Resident and Emergency Care Technician in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. Grimsrud is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Nova Southeastern University and plans to practice as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Nurse after graduating. The Jessie Salone Nursing Education Fund was established in 2006 by Michael Salone in honor of his mother, Jessie Salone, who served as a nurse at Memorial Regional Hospital from 1963 until her retirement in 1992. Inspired by the care and compassion she demonstrated throughout her nearly 30-year career, the fund supports nurses who exemplify those same values — either those who have completed their first year of nursing study or nurses continuing their education. Administered through Memorial Foundation, the scholarship is open to nurses and nursing students working anywhere within Memorial Healthcare System, including Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where Grimsrud serves as an emergency care technician. "This honor means more to me than a scholarship," Grimsrud wrote in her acceptance letter to the Salone family. "It represents the legacy of Nurse Jessie and the principles she upheld throughout her career at Memorial. To me, this scholarship feels like a message from Nurse Jessie herself, who continues to serve as a mentor and reminder of why we do what we do.” For Grimsrud, the recognition reflects more than personal achievement. It also reflects her pride in the nursing profession and excitement to join its ranks. "Working alongside nurses for the past five years has been both inspiring and motivating," Grimsrud wrote in her scholarship application. "I am continually encouraged by their resilience, advocacy and dedication to patient care. Each shift reinforces my desire to join their profession and contribute meaningfully to patient outcomes.” Grimsrud was recommended for the scholarship by her educational leader at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. She holds a 3.9 GPA, is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and earned a place on the dean's list. The scholarship will go toward her remaining tuition at Nova Southeastern University. Before joining Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in August 2025, Grimsrud earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Human Physiology from the University of Iowa and worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Emergency Room Technician in Iowa. She earned her Florida Emergency Medical Technician Certification in 2025. Beyond her work in acute care, Grimsrud has said she hopes to contribute to community-based preventative care, including free health clinics, wellness checkups for new mothers, and mental health crisis response.
