  • “Are You Ok?” Suicide Prevention Program - A Comprehensive Prevention Initiative Aimed At Reducing Incidents Related To Railroad Trespassing Across South Florida | sun-times

“Are You Ok?” Suicide Prevention Program - A Comprehensive Prevention Initiative Aimed At Reducing Incidents Related To Railroad Trespassing Across South Florida South Florida Sun Times May 28, 2026 The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) And Henderson Behavioral Health Recently Launched “Are You Ok?” A Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Initiative Aimed At Reducing Incidents Related To Railroad Trespassing Across South Florida. The Campaign Was Unveiled At A May 19 Press Conference. According to FRA data, Florida ranked second in the nation for railroad trespassing casualties in 2025, reporting 65 fatalities and 70 injuries. Within the South Florida Rail Corridor, shared by Tri-Rail, Amtrak, and CSXT, there were 12 trespasser strikes in 2025, nine of which resulted in fatalities. The trend has continued into 2026, with Tri-Rail reporting 14 trespasser incidents to date, 10 of which were fatal. “This partnership reflects our unwavering commitment to safety and to the well-being of the communities we serve,” said Marci Woodward, Palm Beach County Vice Mayor and SFRTA Chair. “Every life lost on our rail corridor is one too many. By working alongside Henderson Behavioral Health, we are taking a proactive, human-centered approach focused not only on prevention, but on providing hope, awareness, and intervention where it is needed.” Supported by a $56,500 Grant from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the program will combine targeted public education campaigns with specialized training for SFRTA employees, contractors, and regional partners. The initiative is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of railroad trespassing, identify warning signs of individuals in crisis, and equip frontline personnel with the tools to respond effectively and compassionately. “For more than 70 years, Henderson Behavioral Health has worked to meet people where they are and remove barriers to care,” said Dr. Steven Ronik, CEO of Henderson Behavioral Health. “This important partnership with Tri-Rail allows us to bring awareness about services that are available to people who are struggling or navigating difficult times. It’s okay not to be okay – you don’t have to go through it alone. Support is here, and help is available.” “Our goal is not only to prevent tragedies but to foster a culture of awareness and care,” added Woodward. “This program is about saving lives through education, compassion, and meaningful partnerships.” SFRTA encourages the public to respect railroad boundaries and to seek help for themselves or others who may be in distress. More information about this effort is available on: www.tri-rail.com and Tri-Rail Social Media channels. Florida Sadly Leads The Nation In Drowning Deaths Among Children Ages 1 To 4. These Tragedies Can Happen In The Short Time It Takes To Answer A Phone Call Or Step Inside For Just A Moment. To help prevent drowning, it's critical to have multiple layers of protection around any body of water, whether it’s a pool, bathtub, lake, or the ocean. To learn more, visit: www.watersmartfl.com What to Know About “Dry Drowning”: Even after someone is out of the water, they may still be in danger. If someone has a near-drowning experience and continues to cough or seems to be struggling to breathe, call 9-1-1 and get medical help right away! Smart Water Safety Tips: Keep eyes on kids at all times: Supervision is the most important layer of protection. • Free Community College: Would It Make Our Workers Smarter and Our Country Richer?

Free Community College: Would It Make Our Workers Smarter and Our Country Richer? By Brent Messenger July 15, 2021 Share The free community college proposals aren't short of support: 83% of Democrats back free public college and university, as do 39% of Republicans "Do we want to give the wealthiest people in America another tax cut, " asked Joe Biden, "or do you want to give every high school graduate the ability to earn a community college degree?" The president's question was not rhetorical. He was speaking at an event to promote his American Families Plan, which includes spending that would enable Americans to attend a free two-year community college. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Pramila Jayapal have introduced a similar bill in Congress. The proposals aren't short of support: 83% of Democrats back free public college and university, as do 39% of Republicans. The announcement elated President Biden's own party, even as it raised Republican objections. The reaction of both sides was predictable. Free community college is a pillar of the progressive agenda. By contrast, Republicans in Congress won't support the measures because of their significant costs. This divide is unfortunate. Free community college should be viewed not as a partisan issue, but as an investment that will yield future returns in the form of economic growth. The bottom line: free community college will pay for itself in the long run. The best jobs require more than a high school diploma. A high school graduate makes $39,000 a year on average, a figure that jumps to $46,000 with an associate degree. That's almost $300,000 more in earnings over a 40-year career. But nearly 30 percent of Americans over the age of 25, lack a higher education. Republicans are right that a federal program won't be cheap. President Biden's plan calls for $109 billion to pay for free, two-year degrees. But that's peanuts compared to what America will lose in economic output should our skill levels stagnate. A lack of workers with associate or bachelor degrees will cost America $1.2 trillion in economic output over the next decade. The lost output occurs, when employers can't fill jobs that need the specialized training that higher education provides. Even with record unemployment, last year, employers had 8.1 million jobs left unfilled. Employers struggle to find workers with the right mix of technical and soft skills. Some reports show that 83% of bosses can't find the right candidates. Three-quarters believe that applicants don't have the skills that they'll need on the job. Free community college can help close the skill gaps by preparing students for the jobs of the future. In 2019, community colleges granted a million associate degrees and certificates. Nearly 60% of associate degrees and 94% of certificates were for health care, IT, business, computer science and construction trades. Those skills can help workers succeed outside of the traditional office. Freelance job openings have skyrocketed amid the pandemic, nearly 70% of remote workers say they're open to such an opportunity. Some of the fastest-growing positions involve accounting, data analytics and health care. It's understandable that fiscal conservatives, object to proposals for free four-year degrees. A degree in Film Studies or liberal arts majors, may not give workers, the tangible skills they'll need on the job. But investment in community colleges is different. It's a cost-effective use of federal dollars, a "bridge-loan" that recipients who otherwise wouldn't go on to higher education, will pay back many times over in higher income taxes and in increased productivity. Nearly a dozen states already recognize the benefits of free two-year colleges and now is the time for the federal government to jump on board. < Previous News Next News >

  • Digital Literacy Tips for Older Adults

Digital Literacy Tips for Older Adults October 18, 2024 Share If current trends continue, decades of gentle teasing and jokes about older adults' confusion with technology may be on their way out. Not only do digital tools and technology help this generation stay connected to family and friends, but technology is also making it more practical for these individuals to remain independent and age in place. Assistive and health-related technology is also on the rise, according to a "U.S. News & World Report." Tools like medical or health apps, wearable trackers, hearing devices and some smart home products make it easier and safer for older adults to age in place. Whether for social, practical or entertainment purposes, growing your confidence with technology and digital tools can be a slow, steady process that allows you to increase your comfort level while building a solid understanding. Boost your digital literacy with these tips from the tech experts at Cox Communications: Find resources that allow you to participate in digital literacy education. Many community groups offer classes geared toward older adults, and you can also find resources from internet providers. If you're comfortable searching the internet, you can also find support groups and user-friendly guides online. Slow down. When it comes to digital literacy, the internet can be fast-moving, which can be overwhelming for older adults who are not used to the environment. The pace can also expose you to the risk of cybercrime. Approaching online activity in small bites may help you take in a manageable amount of information and process it before piling on more information. Research options. With so many technology devices and services available, it's possible, and even advisable, to explore the various options before making a purchase or signing an agreement. Consider the features you need against your budget to make the best choice. For example, options like Cox Communications' Connect Assist program can help you find fast, reliable and affordable internet plans to fit within your retirement budget. Take breaks. Digital media can become addictive for older adults; with so much to see and learn, it's easy to lose literally hours. That's why it's a good idea to take a balanced approach and limit the time you dedicate to your smartphones and computers each day. Use digital media to improve connections. Social media and online groups can add social connectivity, but this digital interaction shouldn't replace your personal relationships. Be sure to prioritize live social connections, and don't use digital media in place of conventional in-person connections that can provide important benefits for your overall physical and mental health. Stay informed about cybercrime. Because of their limited experience with technology, older adults are major targets of cybercrime. Stay informed about methods and tactics used by these criminals so you can protect yourself, your identity and your assets. Use strong passwords. If your memory isn't what it used to be, you may be tempted to repurpose your passwords so you don't have to remember as many. Unfortunately, that approach may mean that if someone figures out how to access one account, they have access to many more. Create passwords that are a mix of letters, numbers and symbols and write them down in a safe place. Generally, it's best to avoid using easily guessed information like birthdays and names of children. Be cautious about what you read and share online. If something seems questionable, verify it with multiple sources before accepting it as true. In Memory of Michael Stern: A Tireless Fighter For Good And Dedicated Much of His Life To Helping Others August 22, 2024 Share Michael Stern, an Aventura Commissioner passed away peacefully on July 25th at his family-filled Aventura home. He was 57. He was diagnosed with an advanced stage of Colorectal Cancer at 52 after delaying his Colonscopy for several years. Commissioner Stern was the second-longest serving elected official in Aventura's history. His commitment to serving others was evident as an elected leader and in his everyday life. Since being diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer in 2019, Michael dedicated himself to education and advocacy, saving lives. Aside from being a Commissioner, Michael Stern was also one of the creators of Aventura Magazine and spent much of his time after his diagnosis in 2019 urging others to get a Colonoscopy. He became an Ambassador in the fight against Colorectal Cancer and also advocated for funding Cancer Research in Washington. As part of the fight against Colorectal Cancer in 2023 and 2024, Aventura’s Colorectal Cancer Public Service Announcements won Gold Viddy Awards from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals due in large part to Stern’s contributions. Stern believed in an era where effective communication plays a vital role in raising awareness and driving social change, the Aventura Public Communicators Group with his contribution achieved a remarkable feat. The outstanding Short Film, "Michael Stern: Colorectal Cancer Awareness," was honored with the prestigious Gold Viddy Award from The Association Of Marketing And Communications Professionals. This recognition was a testament to the group's commitment to delivering impactful messages and their dedication to Public Health Initiatives. He made sure people knew his story to raise awareness about the disease. "I found out about my Cancer Diagnosis after waking up from my Colonoscopy in October 2019. At that time, it was unknown what stage I was at, just that it was most likely a Cancerous Polyp. It took about a week to find out it progressed to Stage IV." "I turned to Google, which was a very big mistake. After reading most of the results that I had about a 14% chance of living past five years, my life stood still for that moment. All I could think of is, "Will I see my kids grow up?" and "What do I say to them?" "How can I leave my family at this time? I have so much more to do. It took me a few weeks to come to grips with things. I started to think in a different direction." "I was very fortunate to have my wife (aka "my rock") stand by my side and listen to the waterfall of information thrown at me, as I was unable to comprehend anything. She was able to help me process things. I found the best medical team and focused on anything I can do to beat this. I surrounded myself with an incredible support system, family, and friends, who pushed me every day to keep going and stay strong. After multiple surgeries, Chemo Treatments, Temporary Ileostomy, and then a permanent one, CT Scans, MRIs, Blood Draws, and Port Flushes, I stand here today NED [No Evidence of Disease] and stronger than ever." "Having the right mindset in a Cancer Journey is half the battle." "Advice: The fear for me was getting that Colonoscopy. It was the total opposite of what I thought it was. It was so easy. I wish I knew this sooner, as I would have gotten my Colonoscopy a few years earlier. The Polyp could have been found early and prevented me from having Cancer. My advice is simple. GET A COLONOSCOPY! It could save your life." "Whatever part of the Cancer Journey you are on, take this life-changing event as an opportunity to do whatever you really want to do. Focusing on being positive. Try to get rid of Stress. Remove the fear. Enjoy and appreciate all the good things." Michael Stern Stage IV Colon Cancer Patients & Survivors Raising Awareness For Colorectal Cancer By sharing his story via Online and the Short Film he not only educated viewers about the importance of Early Detection and Prevention but also served as a source of inspiration and hope for those facing similar challenges. Colorectal Cancer is one of the leading causes of Cancer-Related Deaths globally. Despite its prevalence, the disease often goes undetected until it reaches advanced stages. Colorectal Cancer Screening can save your life. While over 90% of Colon and Rectal Cancers are found in people over age 50, anyone at any age can get Colorectal Cancer. All adults should talk to their doctor about when to start Screening for Polyps and Cancer. The general population should begin screening at age 45. Those with a Family History of Colorectal Cancer or Precancerous Colorectal Polyps may need to begin Screening before age 45, and anyone experiencing signs and symptoms of Colorectal Cancer (at any age) should have their symptoms evaluated. Screening should follow regular intervals through age 75 (the interval depends on which Screening method is used), and people over 75 should talk to their doctor about whether Screening is necessary. The Film serves as a reminder that Prevention and Early Intervention can significantly improve outcomes for individuals battling Colorectal Cancer. So take time to make that appointment, it could make a huge difference in your life.
