- South Florida Paddlers: Cleaning The Waterways, One Plastic Bottle At A Time
South Florida Paddlers: Cleaning The Waterways, One Plastic Bottle At A Time By Barbara Fox September 2, 2021 Share “There is no better way to spend the day, than helping the environment, getting great exercise and having good conversations, with friends.” Bryan Doe started kayaking and paddleboarding in the ocean and on a lake, which was sparkling and clean. “Imagine how shocked I was, when I moved to South Broward and began kayaking and paddleboarding at local lakes; the amount of trash on the shore, caught in the trees and in the water was unbelievable.” He saw plastic bottles, straws, coffee cups, bags, containers, lots of other stuff that people just tossed overboard, because they didn’t want to take it home “or maybe, some of it fell overboard and they just didn’t notice,” said Bryan, giving them the benefit of the doubt. “Either way, the amount of trash, is unbelievable.” He began taking a bag with him, when he went kayaking and paddleboarding. He started with a small bag, then two bags; now, he takes a 55-gallon bag and a bucket, when he gets back to shore, the bag and bucket, are always full. “People and families see me and my friends picking up trash; I’m hoping it will inspire them, educate them, especially, the kids, that dumping trash into the water, is bad and that every clean-up, can help.” The county sends a boat weekly to clean-up but, according to Bryan, they could go out everyday and it wouldn’t be enough. The trash, some of which flows in from the ocean, is endless. Bryan belongs to several groups, including the South Florida Paddlers, which did a clean-up recently, at Wilton Loop. They started at Sunrise Paddleboards and did the complete loop, around Wilton Manors. They are planning more clean-ups, at Whiskey Creek and at the C-10 Canal. The outings are informal; “I just tell a few people I’m going out, throw a couple of extra kayaks onto the roof of the car and anyone who wants to join me, joins me.” The recent group, included: Michell Ball, Vanessa LaForte, Kent Hash and Victor Langarica, who brought his six-year-old daughter Natalie, along. She was a most enthusiastic trash collector, especially after Victor showed her “The waterway clean-up, touched my heart,” Vanessa posted on Facebook; Kent summed up the experience. “There is no better way to spend the day, than helping the environment, getting great exercise and having good conversations, with friends.” There are several groups in the area, that organize clean-ups; for more information, about the groups to contact: South Florida Paddlers on Facebook. < Previous News Next News >

- Celebrating Pride Month: Hollywood Is Demonstrating Its Commitment Toward Progress & Equality
Celebrating Pride Month: Hollywood Is Demonstrating Its Commitment Toward Progress & Equality June 9, 2022 Share In celebration of Pride Month, the City of Hollywood, in partnership with the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council, hosted the official Progress Pride Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall last week. Mayor Josh Levy and Council President Todd Delmay provided remarks, followed by singer David Meulemans who performed “You Raise Me Up” a cappella while the Progress Pride flag was being raised. This year, in addition to the Progress Pride Flag, the “My Hollywood Pride Youth Tapestry” will hang in the 2nd floor lobby of City Hall for the month of June. The tapestry was created in January 2022 by youth who attended the My Hollywood Pride inaugural event. Each of the 18 fabric squares were thoughtfully created and personalized by youth to express who they are and how the event made them feel. "Hollywood's emergence as a municipal leader of LGBTQ+ equality has been remarkable. Hollywood was the first city in the state to fly the Progress Pride flag in 2020 and celebrated its first My Hollywood Pride in January of this year,” says Delmay. “And with the flag raising at City Hall again, we are unveiling for the public what we believe is the first of its kind in the state; a Pride Youth Tapestry made by local youth on the theme of what Pride means to them. In a year when youth have felt especially vulnerable, and a time when the most marginalized in our community need our support, I could not be prouder that Hollywood is demonstrating its commitment to work together toward progress and equality for everyone.” The Progress Pride flag, donated by the Council, will fly over Hollywood City Hall in June as a symbol of the open and diverse community that is Hollywood. The Progress Pride flag features the traditional rainbow colors, but also includes a chevron with black and brown to represent queer people of color, and pink, blue and white to represent those of trans and/or non-binary experience. - I Contracted COVID-19: A Perspective From a Medical Professional
I Contracted COVID-19: A Perspective From a Medical Professional February 24, 2022 Share Jamie Dyson has been practicing acute care physical therapy for over 25 years and currently practices at Central Florida Regional Hospital in the ICU with patients with COVID-19, among others who need critical care. A few months ago, Jamie contracted a serious case of COVID himself. Here Jamie discusses his experience treating - and recovering from - COVID-19. What has treating COVID-19 been like for you? Working with patients with COVID-19 has been an eye-opening experience. As critical care physical therapists we knew how to work with the critically ill and have set parameters that we use to make appropriate clinical decisions regarding the dosage of care we provide. COVID-19 was unique in that patients were presenting much differently. The parameters of care that we have used for years were not allowing us to help these patients. Basically, we had to put everything we knew aside and develop new treatment parameters for these patients. There are several unique physiological changes that occur with COVID, including how our blood cells carry oxygen as well as triggers that tell our bodies to produce blood clots. Knowing this and what we know about critical care physical therapy, we went headfirst into developing these new parameters. Unfortunately, like everything else having to do with COVID, there was no true evidence to support these changes. We had to rely on clinical experience and patient responses as our guides. As a physical therapist with 30 years of experience, treating COVID was the first time I was making decisions solely based on clinical experience and not drawing from the best available evidence. One aspect of care that was truly challenging was that patients rarely made steady progress forward. We had to make daily clinical decisions on how much and how hard to push patients. They did not progress as one would expect a critical care patient to progress. Another challenge was having to wear the PPE. Physical therapy is intrinsically, physical, and wearing the masks and gowns made things uncomfortable. Additionally, we were working very closely and putting ourselves at risk every time we worked with these patients. Can you talk about your experience as a patient with COVID? Due to a medical condition I live with, I was advised not to get the COVID vaccine. I saw colleagues come down with COVID left and right, but fortunately for the first year I remained COVID-free. And I thought I was in the clear. In May 2021 I started feeling sick. It progressed to having a high fever, which led me to get tested, and yes, I was positive. I was sick at home for over three weeks with high fevers and profound weakness. I really had to push myself as a PT to ensure I would not suffer from the multiple complications that can arise. So I made myself walk every day, even if it was just a few feet. I am now four months out and still working to get back to normal. I still struggle with some weakness and shortness of breath but am working on it everyday. A huge issue we are seeing in the hospital setting is burn out of the healthcare providers. Everyone from physicians to housekeeping are exhausted and that exhaustion is leading to large turn over and many vacancies. Some have left healthcare all together because of this. Those remaining have been trying to fill the voids by taking on additional shifts but the cycle perpetuates. Hopefully we will soon have a light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel and can begin to heal as providers. How is physical therapy uniquely able to help with COVID-19 recovery? Physical therapy improves human movement. Many of the sequelae (a condition which is the consequence of a previous disease or injury), or consequences, of COVID-19 involve muscle weakness and decreased endurance which is prime for physical therapy. Physical therapy integrates all of the body systems involved in human movement including the musculoskeletal system, the neuromuscular system, the cardiovascular system, the pulmonary system and the integumentary (skin) system. The integrated system-based approach facilitates maximal movement in the shortest amount of time. Unfortunately, many who have recovered from COVID-19 will have permanent chronic disability. Physical therapy is also uniquely able to maximize function of those with permanent disabilities to allow them to be as independent as possible. Physical therapy is going to have a huge role moving forward both with people who have the acute onset of movement disorders but also those with chronic conditions and may require physical therapy to maintain their level of independence as they transition through life. What role does physical therapy play for patients post-COVID? COVID-19 sequelae impact patients during both the acute phase as well as throughout their lifespan. Initially the role of PT will be to maximize an individual’s function post-COVID. This begins at the hospital in the intensive care units and continues through to outpatient and home health. From there, as the individual moves through the phases of life, these sequelae will be a part of their medical history. It will be important to integrate whatever chronic COVID sequelae each patient has into a new plan of care depending on the condition being treated. These sequelae can involve many different systems of the body and no two people are going to present the same. It is crucial that physical therapy professionals integrate these into their plan of care. What is your advice to people struggling with long-haul COVID symptoms? Being both a physical therapist and someone recovering from COVID, my first piece of advice is to be patient with the recovery and do everything you can to control stress and anxiety. Evidence shows that for every day someone stays in bed it takes six-to-nine days to regain the strength and endurance lost. Many patients who have recovered from COVID-19 spent weeks in bed. Next, consider multiple system involvement and the prolonged symptoms, which are unique to COVID-19, and the recovery is going to be months instead of days. Anxiety and stress can facilitate an inflammatory response, which in turn can lead to further cell destruction, which means you need strategies to keep stress and anxiety low. For many, exercise is a great stress reliever, but unfortunately those recovering from COVID may not be able to use that, at least initially. Patients may need new outlets to relieve stress - such as spending time with family, listening to music or even a nice, long, hot shower. Those are strategies that I used in my own recovery. And know that there are going to be good days and bad days. The main thing is not to give up and keep moving forward. We’ve got this. < Previous News Next News >

The campaign will continue throughout the year, aligning with nationally recognized holidays including Veterans Day. “Galleria Fort Lauderdale has a long history of supporting worthy causes and is proud to support Henderson Behavioral Health’s efforts to help those who dutifully served our country through this impactful and engaging public photo opportunity,” said Shaneika Haskins, Marketing Director at Galleria Fort Lauderdale. “We invite the community to experience the mall and be part of this vibrant tribute to Veterans which supports much needed Mental Health services.” The poppies made their debut at an unveiling at Tunnel Top Plaza in Downtown Fort Lauderdale in May. Funds raised through sponsorship of the poppies and donations will directly support Henderson Behavioral Health’s VICTORY (Veterans in Counseling to Obtain Recovery) Program, which provides free Mental Health services to Veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and their families, including outreach and education across South Florida, workshops addressing Mental Health challenges impacting military families, and individual and relationship therapy offered both in clinical settings and within the community. “The Poppy Project is a powerful way for our community to come together in remembrance of those who have patriotically served our country and to honor them by supporting vital Mental Health programs and services,” said Dr. Steven Ronik, CEO of Henderson Behavioral Health. “We salute Galleria Fort Lauderdale for presenting this extension of our program and thank many other businesses and individuals who are not only honoring service and sacrifice but also ensuring that those who have served and continue to protect our country receive the care they deserve.” Inspired by the poppy’s historical significance as a symbol of sacrifice, rooted in the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields,” and later adopted as a national emblem of remembrance, HBH’s The Poppy Project brings this tradition to life in a local and meaningful way. The effort will continue throughout the year, aligning with nationally recognized holidays including Veterans Day. Since 2023, Henderson Behavioral Health has served hundreds of Veterans, including more than 250 in 2025 alone, reflecting the growing demand for accessible, high-quality Mental Health care. As a vital safety net within the community, the organization continues to see increasing demand for Veteran-focused services, highlighting the need for continued resources to support and expand access to care.
