  • Can American Families Still Afford The Christmas They Grew Up With? | sun-times

Can American Families Still Afford The Christmas They Grew Up With? By Sam Bourgi Dec 25, 2025 The Short Answer Is No, I Don’t Believe Families Can Afford Christmases From Their Childhood. And My Answer Is Not Based On Nostalgia Or Whether You Even Should Try To Afford It, But On The Rising Costs Of Things That Define Christmas For Us. Each year, Americans spend more and more on gifts, on food, and on this holiday in general. And I think it is crazy, how can 50% of people plan to spend more than $150 on decorations alone? While it may sound harsh, this makes me think that most people are either wealthier than portrayed or very poor at planning their budgets and managing expectations. Yet I agree that each household views Christmas in different ways. For some, it is solely a tradition, while for others, it is only a time for gift-giving. Regardless, prices are increasing, and by being surrounded by consumerist culture, most of us give in to the discounts and maybe buy things that are not necessary. However, your spending should reflect your values, especially when talking about the increased cost of this celebration. To understand the dramatic shift in prices, let's look at the prices we grew up with. For 42 years, PNC Bank has calculated the prices of the 12 gifts from the classic song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas." The Christmas Price Index in the U.S. stood at over $51,400 in 2025. But did you know how much it was in 1984? A few drops over $20,000. Actually, according to the website, counting each repetition of the song, it would amount to 364 presents or over $218,000 this year. A dollar today buys only 46% of what it could buy back then. In 1995, $1 had the same purchasing power as approximately $2.13 today. It experienced an average inflation rate of 2.55% annually from 1995 to the present, resulting in a total price increase of 112.58%. Here is another example of how crazy the cost of everything has grown. Remember the movie Home Alone? How many of you have already watched it this year, or maybe are planning to during Christmas? As the celebrations approach unstoppably, most of us are hit with expenses that reach sky-high numbers. However, in the movie, Christmas appears so easy, manageable, and affordable. However, it is far from the truth today, and what may have looked like a celebration every family could afford is now out of reach. In the movies, the McCallister family has five children. Investors Observer has reported that when you compare basic child-rearing costs with average family income, many American families would be tens of thousands of dollars short if they wanted to raise five children. And that excludes birthdays, toys, and all the maybe not-so-necessary things to buy, but those that make the child’s life better. In my opinion, no, not many families can afford what they grew up with. And while some could have compared themselves to the McCallisters back in 1990, today you should be part of the exclusive 1%. Even the house the McCallisters currently live in is worth over $5 Million, with a more than 200% increase in the last 10 years. This does not indicate a shift in values, nor does it suggest that families should consider this a failure, rather, it highlights the economic shift we are now facing. • 68th Annual Candy Cane Parade On Hollywood Beach

68th Annual Candy Cane Parade On Hollywood Beach City of Hollywood December 5, 2024 Share The 68th Annual Candy Cane Parade is lighting up the iconic Hollywood Beach Broadwalk this Saturday, December 7th, starting at 7 p.m. This year’s theme, “Favorite Children’s Christmas Movie,” promises a nostalgic evening filled with holiday cheer. What began as a creative initiative back in the mid-1950’s by a group of enterprising Hollywood merchants has blossomed into one of the longest-standing holiday parades in the nation. The inaugural parade was conceived as a clever strategy to entice patrons to peruse the local shops and businesses. Over the decades, this simple yet ingenious idea has grown into a beloved tradition, captivating audiences with its array of brilliantly illuminated floats and vehicles. Today it features dozens of lighted floats and vehicles along the parade route entertaining the thousands of spectators who line the Broadwalk. The parade kicks off at Missouri Street, traveling south along the Broadwalk, passing the parade emcee stationed at the Hollywood Beach Theatre on Johnson Street, and concluding at Harrison Street. Guests can enjoy prime viewing by bringing a lawn chair or securing a table at one of the many seaside restaurants lining the route. Marvel at the festive floats, energetic marching bands, and imaginative displays crafted by civic groups, non-profits, and children’s organizations. To “Help Keep Hollywood Beautiful,” parade participants are encouraged to hand out candy instead of tossing it from floats, helping to reduce waste along the Broadwalk and beach. Parade-goers can also show their commitment to sustainability by bringing reusable water bottles and be #SeenBeingGreen. Due to the high demand for parking on the barrier island, beginning at 5:00 p.m., parade goers are encouraged to park in one of the Downtown Parking Garages and take the free patron shuttle to the beach. The Downtown Parking Garages are located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Shuttles will circulate non-stop throughout the evening with the last shuttle leaving the beach at 10:00 p.m. Downtown Parking Rates apply. Presented by the City of Hollywood Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, this beloved holiday tradition is not to be missed! For more details, visit: www.hollywoodfl.org . • Chanukah Festival 2022: Annual “Fried & Ribo” Event Hits South Florida

Chanukah Festival 2022: Annual “Fried & Ribo” Event Hits South Florida November 17, 2022 Share In honor of Shnas Hakhel, the Biblical Year of Gathering, Chabad of South Broward is going all out with its Annual Chanukah Festival, hosting together for the first time in America, the dynamic duo of Avraham Fried and Ishay Ribo, who will be bringing their magical Annual Chanukah Show to the shores of Miami. For the first time, the 7,000 seat Seminole Hard Rock Concert Hall in Hollywood, Florida, will be the venue of the Annual Chanukah Concert hosted by Chabad of South Broward, led by Executive Director, Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus. The Concert will feature the dynamic duo of the two greatest contemporary Jewish singers from Israel and the United States, Avraham Fried and Ishay Ribo. The two share a close bond and will be singing together one week before, at the Annual Chabad Hosted “Tzamah” Event at Binyanei Haumah in Yerushalayim. Avraham Fried Avraham Shabsi Hakohen Friedman better known by his stage name, Avraham Fried, a popular musical entertainer in the Orthodox Jewish Community. Fried was encouraged towards a music career by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Rebbe of Lubavitch and by Mordechai Ben David. Fried began his career with the release of his first album "No Jew Will Be Left Behind" in 1981. The title song was composed by Yossi Green and the song “Kel Hahodaos” was written by Kol Salonica. Fried went on to collaborate with Green on eight albums. Green is credited with some of Fried’s biggest hits, including “Aderaba,” “Tanya” and “Didoh Bei.” His music is mostly categorized as Pop Jewish Music, similar to Mordechai Ben David and tends to integrate many styles of popular music, including: Pop, Rock and Jazz with Jewish lyrics and themes. He also has a few “cantor” style songs on most of his albums, as well as many songs written in Yiddish. He sings his Yiddish songs with a Chabad flavor. Ishay Ribo Ishay was born and raised in France and at the age of 13 he began writing songs, composing and recording them in his home. He learned to play the guitar at 18. In 2014, he launched his debut album, "Tocho Ratzuf Ahava," which was certified Gold for selling more than 25,000 copies in Israel. At the same time, the song "Kol Dodi" reached the number one spot for Israeli Religious Radio Stations. Ishay has collaborated on singles and performances with prominent Israeli artists, including: Shlomo Artzi, Idan Raichel and David D'or, as well as famous Jewish Musicians: Avraham Fried, Yaakov Shwekey, Mordechai Ben David, Yonatan Razel, among others. Ishay Ribo participated in the three "Tzama" project albums, which showcase Chabad melodies. In 2016, he released his second album, "Pachad Gvahim," which also achieved Gold album certification. At the same time, Ishay also worked on collaborations with Composer Yossi Green, as well as a new single with Moti Steinmetz. He managed to break down sectarian walls on his way to the top, in his own way, by mixing a unique combination of spiritual influences, catchy and inspirational Western melodies and his one-of-a-kind, soft voice. This has made Ribo one of the most prominent and beloved young artists in the Israeli Music Scene, with millions of YouTube views and his third album "Shetah Afor" that become one of the most intriguing on the charts. The Dynamic Duo For the last five years, Fried and Ribo have been hosting a 12,000 person joint Chanukah Concert in Israel, night after night. The show was supposed to hit New York last winter but had to be canceled at the last minute due to the third wave of Corona and the lockdown in Israel. This year, for the first time ever, the two are heading out directly from the Israeli Concert to the shores of Miami. Flying together from Israel with an enormous team of 14 musicians and an entire staff of light and sound technicians, a production team, directors and stage managers, as well as the videographers and photographers. Rabbi Tennenhuas told numerous media outlets: “The Rebbe gave us a special Brachah for our Chanukah Festivals that they should continuously grow each year. We have merited to see the fulfillment of the Rebbe’s Brachah - over time; the event has attracted tens of thousands of participants. Inspired by the Rebbe’s call to initiate gatherings of Yidden in honor of Shnas Hakhel, this year we have gone all out.” Considering the enormous costs of the event this year, for the first time, tickets will be sold at various rates to accommodate the entire community and beyond. In addition, there are opportunities for sponsorships, with perks including front-row seats or couches, an ad in the program directory, a meet and greet with Ishay Ribo and Avraham Fried and a deluxe dinner before the festival. Tickets and sponsorships are available on the event website: www.Chanukahfestival.com < Previous News Next News >
