- A Pawfect Addition To the Family: Find A Furry Friend At The Aventura Mall Between Nike And Tesla
A Pawfect Addition To the Family: Find A Furry Friend At The Aventura Mall Between Nike And Tesla June 20, 2024 Share The Humane Society of Greater Miami has been helping homeless animals in Miami-Dade County since 1936. Today, more than 400 homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens each day are cared for at the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center in North Miami Beach. They are able to give these animals a second chance by providing tender loving care, a good meal, shelter and medical care for as long as it takes to find them homes with kind, responsible and committed caregivers. The organization works diligently at creating a more kind, just and loving community for the pets and people of Miami-Dade County. They offer programs and services to educate, inform and inspire people to take responsible care of their pets and treat animals with the kindness they deserve. With the support of people from across Miami-Dade County, they are helping to create a better community for all. The staff at the Humane Society of Greater Miami run a preventive veterinary clinic, where they strive to end our community’s pet overpopulation problem by performing thousands of sterilization surgeries each year. They have programs that help the financially challenged people of our community by providing low-cost and even free services for Vaccinations and Spay/Neuter surgeries. Each animal that is cared for at their shelter is free from the threat of Euthanasia while they wait for their forever family. More than 3,300 animals each year find their human companions and begin their new lives in the comfort of homes around our community and South Florida. Before a pet is available for adoption, great lengths are made to make sure the pet is healthy, Vaccinated and Spayed or Neutered. They provide counseling and guidance to make sure the right match is made and the right pet is adopted into the right home. The Humane Society of Greater Miami believes that the building of a more kind, just, and loving community for the pets and people of Miami-Dade County begins with instilling the values of kindness and compassion. Staff and volunteers of the Humane Society of Greater Miami travel to schools, libraries, organizations and clubs to teach the young and the old about responsible pet ownership and to promote the human/animal bond. The center's philosophy is to engage the young and teach them about being kind to animals, being a responsible pet owner and the causes and effects of pet overpopulation while also educating the parents and the elderly making it a full circle of informed members of our community. More than 6,000 children and adults are seen on a yearly basis. If you would like to request a humane education speaker to visit your child’s classroom or scout troop, please call: (305) 749-1820 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. weekdays. Fishing For Wishes - RCASF Event Raises $220,000 To Help Make-A-Wish Improve The Lives Of Sick Kids And Families Aventura Digest Aug 27, 2026 Four-Year-Old Beau Tripp May Be Too Young To Understand The Community That Has Mobilized Around Him As He Battles Health Issues, But The Roofing Contractors Association Of South Florida (RCASF) Has Demonstrated They Are Squarely By His Side. The NonProfit Organization recently hosted Tripp and his family at their 47th Annual Fishing Tournament in Islamorada, an event that raised $220,000 to help Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida grant life-changing wishes for critically-ill children. The Pembroke Pines resident, who recently underwent a kidney transplant, had his wish to visit Florida theme parks underwritten by CL Burks Construction, one of the many companies within the association committed to making a child’s dream come true by sponsoring their wish. To date, more than $2.3 Million has been raised by local roofing contractors through the partnership with Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. “The impact we’ve been able to have within our community from this event is a testament to the association and their sincere desire to improve the lives of children in South Florida,” said Corey Daley, Chairman of the RCASF fishing tournament. “Meeting the Tripp family, and hearing all they’ve gone through with Beau’s health, really reinforced how important the wish experience is and the role our fundraising plays in making it happen.” Much of the money RCASF raised during its three-day event at Cheeca Lodge was from signature sponsors that pledged to underwrite the cost of a wish. These donations from individual companies within the association began more than a decade ago when Earl and Lynne Johnston (Earl W. Johnston Roofing) made the first commitment. The number of those willing to help has grown each year, a fitting legacy for Earl Johnston, who passed away after the 2025 tournament. “It’s our mission to identify and grant a life-changing wish for every critically-ill child in our territory,” said Norman Wedderburn, President & CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, which includes 22 Florida counties and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “The ongoing generosity of the Roofing Contractors Association of South Florida helps us make a difference for Beau and so many other deserving children.” In addition to Make-A-Wish, proceeds from the RCASF’s largest annual fundraiser also benefitted the International Game Fishing Association. About Make-A-Wish Southern Florida Make-A-Wish Southern Florida ( www.wish.org/sfla ) has granted more than 15,000 life-changing wishes since 1983 for children who have critical illnesses. It aims to grant a wish for every medically-eligible child in its territory and understands wishes aren’t just nice, they’re necessary for kids and families at some of the most difficult times in their lives. Wish kids most often ‘wish to be’ (something), ‘wish to meet’ (someone), ‘wish to go’ (somewhere), ‘wish to have’ (something), or ‘wish to give’ (to a cause) and the NonProfit Organization makes this happen for the child and his/her entire family at no cost or obligation. Follow and engage with them on Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and TikTok. The Roofing Contractors Association of South Florida ( www.rcasf.org ) is a Not-For-Profit Trade Association whose purpose is to educate and foster a high standard of business ethics among roofing contractors and associate members. RCASF members endeavor to ‘give back’ to their community throughout the year by hosting several charitable events. - ZAKA Search & Rescue Provides Kavod HaMeit During Busiest 24 Hours Of 5786, Responding From Tragedy To Tragedy | sun-times
ZAKA Search & Rescue Provides Kavod HaMeit During Busiest 24 Hours Of 5786, Responding From Tragedy To Tragedy Jewish Connection News Aug 27, 2026 ZAKA Search & Rescue Volunteers Worked Virtually Nonstop Through A Succession Of Tragedies Across Israel And Internationally Over A Single 24-Hour Period Sunday, Marking What Officials Describe As The Organization’s Busiest 24-Hour Period Of 5786. At the start of one of the final weeks of the summer, ZAKA Search & Rescue teams were dispatched from one tragedy to the next, responding to multiple fatal incidents involving children, teenagers and adults across Israel while the organization’s International Unit simultaneously assisted a Jewish family following the death of a four-year-old Jerusalem boy in a drowning accident in Mexico. The boy drowned in a hotel swimming pool in San Jose del Cabo while vacationing with his family. ZAKA Search & Rescue worked with Mexican authorities and other relevant agencies to assist the family and successfully prevent an autopsy. The child’s body was released and the organization is now helping coordinate his return to Israel for burial. Back in Israel, volunteers responded in rapid succession to a series of tragedies, including the death of a five-year-old child in Lod, the drowning of a 12-year-old boy in the Jordan River and the death of a 16-year-old boy in a rappelling accident in northern Israel. ZAKA Search & Rescue teams also responded to multiple fatal traffic accidents and several cases involving people who were found deceased in their homes, including individuals who had died several days earlier. The string of incidents required volunteers and commanders across the country to move continuously from one scene to the next while the organization simultaneously coordinated an international response in Mexico. “Over the course of this extraordinary 24-hour period, our volunteers were working back to back, responding to one tragedy after another across Israel while our International Unit was simultaneously assisting a Jewish family thousands of miles away in Mexico,” said ZAKA North Executive Director Moshe Rozenberg. “There was virtually no pause between calls. Behind every incident is a family experiencing unimaginable loss, and our volunteers remain committed to being there, no matter how many calls come in or where they occur.” The intense period also demonstrated the breadth of ZAKA Search & Rescue’s operations, with teams responding across Israel while the organization’s international network coordinated with authorities and community partners overseas. “This was an extraordinary 24 hours for ZAKA Search & Rescue and for the thousands of volunteers who stand ready to respond whenever tragedy strikes,” said ZAKA Search & Rescue CEO Dubi Weissenstern. “Our volunteers continued working through one difficult scene after another, providing support to families and ensuring Kavod HaMeit. At the same time, our international teams were doing the same for a Jewish family in Mexico. Whether a tragedy occurs in Israel or thousands of miles away, our responsibility does not change. We are there to serve, to support and to ensure that no family faces these moments alone.” The 24-hour period comes as families across Israel enter the final weeks of the summer, a time when travel, vacations and outdoor activities increase and ZAKA Search & Rescue remains prepared to respond around the clock. Founded to honor the dead in accordance with religious tradition, ZAKA has evolved into a full-scale emergency response network, with over 4,000 trained volunteers operating 24/7 across Israel to honor the dead, aid the living and bring dignity in times of devastation. Today, it operates a wide range of units – from rapid medical response and search and rescue to water recovery to culturally sensitive burial teams serving Israel’s Jewish, Bedouin, Arab and Druze communities to international units deploying at a moment’s notice to crises across the globe. - Sexy, Savvy 70-Year-Old: A New Kind of Hero for the Modern Era
Sexy, Savvy 70-Year-Old: A New Kind of Hero for the Modern Era January 26, 2024 Share Sexy, intelligent and resourceful septuagenarian Lori Brill finds herself caught in the web of a murder investigation during what should have been an enjoyable vacation in London to visit her granddaughter in the lively, award-winning mystery from Charlene Wexler, Murder Across the Ocean. As the story begins, Lori, a silver-haired spitfire long divorced from her alcoholic husband, enjoys an unexpected night of passion in a London hotel with old flame Josh Wheeler. Like Lori, Josh’s looks and appetite for adventure belie his 70-plus years, and Lori finds herself mesmerized by his blue eyes and sweet talk. Lori is all smiles as she steps out of the shower the next morning — until she sees his bloody corpse lying in the bed where they had just made love. The London police naturally suspect Lori, but the case becomes infinitely more complicated when it’s discovered that plenty of people have a motive to murder Josh. On the case is Scotland Yard Inspector Geoffrey Holmes, American FBI agent Jordan Gould, and Lori’s granddaughter Cate and her fiancé, Joseph, who both happen to be London solicitors. Sparks fly, as Cate and Jordan Gould experience a growing mutual attraction, as do Lori and Inspector Holmes. Adding another twist is that Lori’s family has an unforeseen connection to Joseph’s father, Lord Roger Lunt, and to the wealthy German nobleman Baron Joseph Braun and the horror of the Holocaust. So who killed Josh? Was it Josh’s beautiful girlfriend Suzi, who unexpectedly appears in London? Josh’s Chinese financial backers? British mobsters, who kidnap Lori in an attempt to find Josh’s hidden millions? Was it Baron Braun, who summons Lori to Germany to tell her a 70-year-old secret? Or was it someone else entirely? Murder Across the Ocean can be read as a standalone murder mystery or as the follow-up to Wexler’s book, Lori, the origin story of the plucky protagonist. “Lori Brill combines the unexpected smarts of Miss Marple; the genteel strength of character and family circle of Jessica Fletcher; and the hard-boiled sexiness of V.I. Warshawski,” Wexler said. “Readers who enjoy books about those characters will enjoy Murder Across the Ocean. Mature female readers, who have not yet found a hero who is like them, will at last have one in Lori Brill.” About the Author A native Chicagoan, Charlene Wexler has been a teacher, wife, dental office manager, mother and grandmother. In retirement, her lifelong passion for writing has led her to create several essays and novels. Her other books include Murder on Skid Row, Milk and Oranges, Lori and Elephants In The Room. - Meet Flat Fee Legal Service: Guiding You Through Your Projects From Conception to Completion
Meet Flat Fee Legal Service: Guiding You Through Your Projects From Conception to Completion October 6, 2021 Share During Hurricane season, it is especially important to know what your home insurance policy covers in the event that your home is damaged. Local property damage attorney, Jesse O’Hara and his stellar team of professionals at Flat Fee Legal Service are offering free insurance policy reviews and property inspections to ensure you and your family are protected this season. “We are offering free consultations with expert attorneys to review the insurance policies of clients and inform them of what type of coverage they have before the next storm hits us,” says O’Hara. O’Hara, who has handled thousands of property damage claims, has dedicated his legal career to taking on Florida’s insurance companies to ensure that property damage victims are paid what they are rightfully owed on their claims. In most cases, Flat Fee Legal Service provides legal services free of charge to homeowners - as opposed to most other law firms that charge their own clients. “We represent homeowners against their insurance companies in property damage disputes whenever their claims are denied or underpaid. We pay all the upfront costs and are only paid when the homeowner gets paid. The homeowner keeps their portion of the settlement proceeds and we are almost always compensated by the insurance companies, not the homeowner,” says O’Hara. If you are the victim of property damage, whether it may be hurricane, flood, windstorm, water or fire-related, the associates at Flat Fee Legal Service will come to you, review your policy and your property damage to provide a free opinion on whether your property is covered and whether you have a valid insurance claim. Quite often, when a homeowner is the victim of property damage such as a pipe leak, for example, they might hire a plumber and pay them an enormous fee to have it fixed and then submit the bill to their insurance company in hopes of being reimbursed. However, the professional team at Flat Fee Legal Service assists homeowners by working with companies that do not charge the homeowner. Instead, such companies do the work and negotiate directly with the insurance company for their payment. This is a way that we help homeowners fix their homes without going out of pocket or paying legal fees. These companies bill the insurance companies directly instead of taking up-front payment from homeowners. With a strong reputation in trial courts and long-standing relationships with insurance companies, O’Hara and his associates take great pride in assisting clients and ensuring they are paid fairly. Simply put, Flat Fee Legal Service keeps the roof over your head when insurance companies refuse to help. “It’s very rewarding when a court recognizes that your client is right and deserves to have their home fixed. The biggest satisfaction is when we settle their case and hand them their check - they are finally happy they can get their lives back on track. We get a thrill from winning substantial victories on behalf of our clients.” The team at Flat Fee Legal Service is highly engaged with their clients. They pride themselves in being easy to reach and communicate with throughout the entire claims process, which separates them from other larger, less personal firms. “What distinguishes us from a larger firm is that the clients have more one on one attention.” If you are a victim of property damage and are in need of assistance, you can rest assured knowing that the associates at Flat Fee Legal Service will go above and beyond to ensure you are properly compensated by assisting you from the very beginning of your claim all the way until your case is settled. Another aspect that underscores the uniqueness of the Flat Fee Legal Service team is their work culture and accommodating environment. Visitors of their office will note the modern art, highly relaxing, inviting and comforting layout of their office. The firm's staff understand how stressful it is to battle your insurance company while your home is in a state of disrepair. By creating a different atmosphere that stands in stark contrast to typical law firms, they foster a welcoming space for visitors that is both brighter and more laid back. In doing this, Flat Fee Legal Service fosters an environment that is more welcoming than other law firms. This ensures that employees and clients alike can communicate and forge beneficial relationships in a healthy and happy space. O’Hara and his team of professionals understand that it is always possible to go above and beyond to assist their clients. Another way in which they hope to achieve this is by educating homeowners through the Florida Property Damage Podcast – a radio-style show that O’Hara hosts and is currently in development. With the goal of interviewing common players in the industry such as public adjusters, water mitigation companies, mold testing companies, attorneys and insurance adjusters, they hope to familiarize the general public with how the intricate insurance claims process really works. Licensed and recognized by Florida’s Supreme Court for his remarkable work in the community, O’Hara and his team hope to continue educating homeowners and helping them get paid money they are rightfully owed. Flat Fee Legal Service: is located at 1700 East Las Olas Boulevard, Suite #102, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301. If you are interested in a free consultation, free policy review, or free property damage inspection you can contact them at: (954) 361-7878 Or visit their website at: www.flatfeelegalservice.com < Previous News Next News >
- In Sync - Niki Haris & Shelly Berg Live - A Night Of Synchronicity And Soul Presented By Gold Coast Jazz Society | sun-times
In Sync - Niki Haris & Shelly Berg Live - A Night Of Synchronicity And Soul Presented By Gold Coast Jazz Society South Florida Sun Times Jan 1, 2026 When Niki Haris — The Radiant Spirit Of Soul — Meets Shelly Berg — The Maestro Of Motion — The Result Feels Nothing Short Of Inevitable. Some Collaborations Are Carefully Arranged; Others Appear As If Called Into Being, Sparked By An Unseen Rhythm, A Shared Pulse, A Glance Across A Piano And A Microphone. The Partnership Between Haris And Berg Belongs To The Latter. Their Music Is Effortless, Luminous, And Profoundly Alive. Don't Miss This Duo On Wednesday, January 14th, 2026 At Broward Center For The Performing Arts In Fort Lauderdale, Florida As Part Of The Gold Coast Jazz Society's Sizzling Season Series. Haris, daughter of the legendary Gene Harris, was raised in a world where melody was as natural as breath and Gospel grounded her. Jazz expanded her reach. And her years performing alongside icons — from Madonna to Ray Charles — widened her artistic horizon. “I don’t think music should ever lose its joy,” she has said, and her voice proves it. Warm, vital, and generous, Haris sings with the emotion of soul, the storytelling of the blues, and the unbound freedom of jazz. Berg meets her fire with a fluid brilliance of his own. A five-time Grammy® nominee, Steinway Artist, and Dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Berg is known for playing with both wisdom and wonder. Bill Kohlhaase of the Los Angeles Times once described him as “a whirlwind of motion on the piano bench,” and yet beneath the movement lies depth, poise, and clarity. His mastery allows him to listen deeply — to shape the moment while letting others shine. This spirit of musical interplay is precisely what the Gold Coast Jazz Society has championed throughout its history. Together, Haris and Berg embody that mission: creating music that is evolving, expressive, and alive in every measure. “The beauty of jazz,” Berg has said, “is what happens between the notes.” In those spaces, the duo finds connection — yielding performances that breathe, open and unguarded, moving through the room with ease. When the final note lingers, audiences don’t simply applaud; they exhale. Joined by Chuck Bergeron on bass and Gary Novak on drums, the Shelly Berg Trio provides the steady roots beneath Haris’ radiant bloom. In their shared synergy, something takes hold — a seed planted in sound, unfolding long after the last note fades. - Mom's Brunch Made Easy: It's Simple and It's Scrumptious
Mom's Brunch Made Easy: It's Simple and It's Scrumptious Family Features April 21, 2022 Share A Mother's Day brunch doesn't need to be fancy, plus it gives mom a chance to sleep in. With its prime positioning between breakfast and lunch, brunch is a more casual and lighter alternative to the typical lunch or dinner. When charged with planning this for mom, a little pre-planning can go a long way toward ensuring your brunch get-together is as simple as it is scrumptious. Get creative with decor. When prepping your tablescape, think outside the box. Opt for unexpected serving dishes such as tartlet tins and vases, and transfer syrups and jams from their everyday containers to glass bowls or creamers. Fresh flowers and produce can add natural pops of color to the table and a bowl of fruit can make for an eye-catching centerpiece. Plan a variety of dishes. Make sure you have a mix of both sweet and savory dishes on the menu that can please a wide variety of palates. Earmarking some recipes that can be made ahead, like pastries and casseroles, can be a simple way to avoid waking up extra early to prepare. Save the morning of your event for dishes that are best served fresh, like this Herbed Spanish Omelet, which features potatoes; fresh, spring herbs; and red onions, and packs protein, B-vitamins and cancer-protective phytochemicals. Serve it buffet-style. Setting your spread out on the counter and allowing family to help themselves not only makes it easier for the family to relax, but it allows everyone to customize their meals as they wish and gives the gathering a more casual vibe. Try themed stations, such as a coffee or mimosa bar, parfait bar or bread bar, in addition to more traditional dishes to let everyone take the customization to the next level.
