Credit Isn't A Backup Plan. For Millions Of Americans, It's How They Buy Groceries. By Sheeka Sanahori Sep 24, 2026 Sixty-Six Percent Of Americans Carrying At Least $10,000 In Unsecured Debt Used A Credit Card To Buy Groceries In The Last Year, More Than Any Other Essential Expense, According To A New Survey. Credit Cards Were Once Reserved For Expensive Purchases Or For Added Security In Buying Online. For Households Managing Debt, They Have Become A Way To Cover Everyday Purchases Like Groceries. Accredited Debt Relief, a company specializing in debt relief, commissioned Atomik Research in May 2026 to survey 2,000 U.S. adults with at least $10,000 in unsecured debt. Along with groceries, 47% say they've used credit for gas or transportation, 45% for utilities and 33% for rent or housing costs. For people struggling with cost-of-living pressures, using unsecured debt can begin as a quick solution to cover household needs for the moment. At first, it's just milk and eggs. But then an unexpected expense happens: a flat tire, an unusually high electricity bill, a medical cost that was not in the budget. The balance adds up and, according to the survey data, this also creates stress for consumers. This isn't discretionary spending. The data reflects a growing reliance on consumer debt to cover basic cost-of-living needs. However, relying on borrowed money without an executable plan for repaying it could mean that one day, the runway for taking care of such expenses runs out. A significant share of respondents report relying on credit as a routine part of managing their personal finances. This routine could become a long-term debt cycle for many households. Nearly three in ten say that they rely on credit or borrowing to get through a typical month. This reliance appears to be growing, with a third saying they depend on credit more than they did a year ago. For those consumers, what may have once been a stopgap has become an increasingly common and ongoing financial strategy. The growing debt cycle by unsecured borrowing is taking an emotional toll on these consumers, too. A quarter of respondents are concerned about their financial future and 12% feel a stronger concern that they're at risk of long-term financial instability. A lack of savings makes the cycle harder to break. Only 28% of respondents say they can both cover expenses and save. When there is little room between income and expenses, every disruption becomes harder to absorb. Unexpected expenses, such as medical bills or car repairs, lead 19% of respondents to take on additional debt every time, and 27% most of the time. These kinds of costs households are often told to prepare for, but preparation requires room. For many consumers, that room does not exist. Debt builds over time when credit becomes part of monthly operations. Some of these consumers say they don't earn enough to make meaningful changes to their current financial situation. Among those surveyed, 45% report that their income is enough to get by but not get ahead. Many report that their financial situation has caused them to put off taking a vacation or begin building savings. When asked about the biggest barrier to reducing debt, 29% of respondents listed the same obstacle: the cost of everyday expenses. That number connects how debt builds with why it persists. When everyday expenses become part of ongoing credit card debt, the balance can grow without notice. Even when a consumer gets their next paycheck, if it's already accounted for, they may not be able to make much progress in paying down their debts. A few recurring costs, spread across months, can become a greater financial weight. The result is debt that builds, because it's tied to the basic cost of living. It also can create a stressful way to live; more than three in ten people say their current debt situation has affected their mental well-being. Without meaningful changes, whether through increased income, debt relief or other financial support, these households may continue to rely on consumer debt and unsecured credit as a daily necessity rather than a strategic financial tool or occasional supplement. The risk is that life's most basic needs become harder to maintain in the long run. Methodology Accredited Debt Relief commissioned Atomik Research to conduct an online survey of 2,000 U.S. adults with at least $10,000 in unsecured debt. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level. Fieldwork was conducted between May 11-14, 2026. - Confused About Nutrition? - Here Are 6 Expert Tips To Help You Eat Healthier
Confused About Nutrition? - Here Are 6 Expert Tips To Help You Eat Healthier (BPT) January 15, 2025 Share Nutrition can be confusing. Every day seems to bring a new headline declaring what's healthy and what's not, whether it's the Mediterranean Diet, Low Fat, Low Carb, DASH, Vegan or High Protein. With all this diet-of-the-minute hype, it's hard to know what we should be eating. On World Food Day, let's cut through the noise, go back to basics and focus on nutrients. Nutrient density is the right place to start when trying to understand good nutrition and achieve a healthy, balanced diet. This concept refers to how much nutrition you get from food compared to its calories, with the goal being to maximize health benefits. Think leafy greens, broccoli, berries, nuts, seeds and quality protein shakes for nutrient-dense choices. A doughnut? Not so much. "It's important to remember that fresh, natural foods play a key role in our diet, but they aren't always accessible to everyone," says Luigi Gratton, Vice President of the Office of Health and Wellness at Herbalife. "By taking a holistic approach to healthy eating, we can complement fresh meals with food supplements and other nutrient-dense options to help achieve a balanced intake of macro- and micro-nutrients." Here are six tips to get more nutrient bang for your calorie buck. Think color Try this easy nutrition hack: Load your plate with a variety of colorful Vegetables and Fruits. Why? A diverse range of colors ensures you're getting a wide array of Vitamins, Minerals and Antioxidants. Go for Whole Grains and Lean Proteins Choose Whole Grains like Brown Rice and Whole-Grain Bread. They're packed with Fiber and Nutrients. For Protein, opt for lean sources like Chicken, Fish, Beans and Tofu - great for your body without too much Saturated Fat. Drink smart Staying hydrated is key to feeling your best - physically and mentally! Water helps your body make the most of the nutrients in your food and flushes out what it doesn't need. Just be careful: many drinks are loaded with hidden sugars and empty calories. Aim for about eight cups of water a day, but feel free to adjust based on your activity level and personal needs. And remember, Unsweetened Drinks like Tea or Infused Water count toward your hydration too! Always check the label Make it a habit to read food labels - they're key to understanding nutrition! Just because something looks healthy, like Yogurt, doesn't mean it is. Check for Added Sugars and watch the Sodium Levels in diet meals. Aim for Lower Fat and Salt, and Higher Protein, Fiber, Vitamins, and Minerals. This will help you make smarter choices about what you eat! Processed doesn't mean unhealthy Processed doesn't mean unhealthy. The term 'processed food' often gets a bad rap, but not all processed foods are bad for you. In fact, many staples like Pasta, Bread and Yogurt are processed in some way. While some Processed and Ultra-Processed Foods can be high in Saturated Fat, Sugar and Salt, many are actually nutritious. For example, Herbalife's Meal Replacement Shakes are processed to meet regulatory standards and deliver essential nutrients. The key is to choose your Processed Foods wisely - look for options that provide health benefits and fit into your balanced diet! A quality meal replacement shake can help fill gaps in your diet We'd all love to get all our nutrients from fresh, healthy food every day, but let's be honest - life gets busy! Whether you're rushing the kids to Soccer practice or staying late at work, it can be tough to get all the nutrients you need. That's where a quality meal replacement shake comes in. These handy shakes can help you stay on track with your nutrition, making it easier to maintain a balanced diet even when you're short on time. So, take a holistic approach. Combining healthy, fresh food with nutrient-dense meal supplements will ensure you get the nutrients that will help you power through the day. - U.S. Medicare Info Helping Seniors With Medicare Programs Throughout Florida
U.S. Medicare Info Helping Seniors With Medicare Programs Throughout Florida PROFILES By David L. Snelling April 24, 2022 Share For almost five years, U.S. Medicare Info has been helping senior’s in South Florida get coverage for health and drug services not covered by Original Medicare from the government. US Medicare Info. is lead by Steven Hulnick, Owner of Hulnick Insurance Inc. Hulnick is a contracted agent for many of the insurance companies that have expanded coverage to seniors on Medicare to close the gap including, United Health Care the AARP Program, Medica, Preferred Care Partners, Aetna, Humana, Well Care and Silver Script. Hulnick, 48, said the problem stems from the government covering 80 percent of Medicare patients' costs and doesn't offer a drug plan. "As a broker, I work with private insurance companies that offer Medicare insurance supplement programs to cover the balance of what the government doesn't provide," he said. "People call me very confused because of the process. They reach out for assistance and I guide them in the right direction. I consider myself an advocate for seniors." Licensed to do business in Florida, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Arizona and soon to be in Michigan. Hulnick said he's ranked in the top two percent of selling agents in the U.S. Hulnick, a native of New York, said his agents working for him are also licensed to do business in those states. To assist seniors, Hulnick said his team first helps clients enrolled in the government's Medicare plan and then can guide them to sign up for the Medicare Supplement programs with private insurance companies to round out coverage and make them complete. He said he doesn't charge seniors for helping them. "No salary, just a fee paid directly from the insurance company," he said. Previously, Hulnick has over 20 years of insurance experience, selling Health, Life, Property and Casualty insurances. Hulnick spends his time concentrating on Medicare because he enjoys being a resource to the community while building a successful business. "I tell my clients, I am lucky to be able to build a business while helping people," he said. Hulnick said trust with his clients has become the source of their relationship which helps attract and retain customers. He said his clients can always depend on him and rely on his expertise and trusting advice. "People call me because they are concerned and scared of the process," he said. "I come in with a helping hand and nurture them through the process. He added: "By doing right by my clients, I receive referrals from neighbors and family members throughout the country. They call me because of the trust that I build." Hulnick said he has transitioned to working remotely due to COVID which hasn't slowed his business down. He said now he communicates through conference calls, Zoom and emails to get clients signed up through electronic email applications and voice recorded technologies. Selling insurance wasn't Hulnick's first career. A graduate of Johnson Wales University's main campus in Providence, Rhode Island, Hulnick worked in the advertising industry for Grey Advertising in New York. He said his clients included Six Flags Theme Park, Seagram, Captain Morgan and Crown Royal. Hulnick said he met his wife, Elissa Pearl Hulnick, while working in New York and they moved to Florida, where she graduated from the University of Miami School of Law and he earned his MBA at Nova Southeastern University. A Miracle of Faith: Heleni Ezra’s Incredible Journey February 14, 2025 Share Eight months ago, Heleni Ezra faced the unthinkable. A tragic accident left her fighting for her life, and doctors gave her no chance of surviving beyond a few hours. It was a moment of profound sorrow, a time when hope seemed all but lost. But as the news of her condition spread, something extraordinary began to unfold something that would defy medical expectations and inspire all who witnessed it. For 321 consecutive nights, hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital, lifting their voices in prayer. Strangers became family, united by faith and a shared belief in the power of divine intervention. Their prayers, filled with love and unwavering devotion, created a force stronger than despair. They asked for a miracle, and against all odds, a miracle began to take shape. 257 days later, Heleni is still with us. She is home, stable, and making remarkable progress. Though she remains in a coma, her body and spirit continue to fight. Each small movement, each sign of improvement, is a reminder that the human will combined with the grace of God ”knows no limits. Heleni’s journey is more than a story of survival; it is a testament to the power of prayer, the strength of community, and the boundless hope that carries us through even the darkest times. - Feeling Stressed About Your High Utility Bills? The City of Hollywood Has Partnered with Solar United Neighbors for Broward Solar Co-Op 2022
Feeling Stressed About Your High Utility Bills? The City of Hollywood Has Partnered with Solar United Neighbors for Broward Solar Co-Op 2022 August 11, 2022 Share With energy costs rising and coastal cities becoming more vulnerable to increasing climate risks, are you looking for ways to control your clean energy future? Have you ever thought about going solar but aren’t sure where to start? Well, you’re in luck! The Non-Profit Group Solar United Neighbors (SUN) is hosting the Broward Solar Co-Op 2022 to help bring more rooftop solar to South Florida communities. Since the Co-Op launched on Thursday, July 14th, 2022, the 136-Member Group is still growing! Solar United Neighbors is a national Non-Profit that has helped over 5,000 families go solar since 2007. What Is A Solar Co-Op? Together, Co-Op Members will learn about solar energy and leverage their numbers to purchase individual solar systems at a competitive price and top quality. “The Co-Op will enable Broward County homeowners and business owners to join the growing community of people saving money by harnessing solar power,” said Laura Tellez, South Florida Program Coordinator for Solar United Neighbors. “Together, we’re building a movement to transform our electricity system into one that is cleaner, fairer, and shares its benefits more broadly.” After a competitive bidding process facilitated by SUN, which remains vendor neutral, Co-Op members will select a single solar company to complete the installations. Joining the Co-Op does not obligate members to purchase solar. Instead, members will have the option to individually purchase panels and electric vehicle chargers based on the installer’s group rate. Why Join A Solar Co-Op? “I am a five-year solar supporter. I purchased our first 5 kWh array on my own and the research was exhausting and confusing,” said Jack Vesey, resident of Coconut Creek and member of the 2019 Broward Solar Co-Op. “Fast forward to our first SUN Broward Solar Co-Op in 2019 and I was able to make a clear and informed decision. The installer was great to work with. This is the way to go!" The Co-Op is free to join and open to homeowners and business owners in Broward County. Partnering on the Co-Op are: Broward County, Broward Climate Alliance, City of Hollywood, City of Pompano Beach, City of Sunrise, Climate Reality Project- Boca Raton, Dream in Green, League of Women Voters of Broward County, Southeast Florida Clean Cities Coalition, ReThink Energy Florida and Temple Solel. - 40 Year Safety Inspections: What We Are Doing At The State & Local Level
40 Year Safety Inspections: What We Are Doing At The State & Local Level By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper November 18, 2021 Share A task force recently met in South Florida. Miami-Dade County had a task force as well, the Florida Bar and Board of Rules and Appeals have all convened to evaluate what policies could be changed to improve building safety. Last week I had the opportunity to host a meeting to discuss what cities can do in light of Broward County’s recommendations to address the 40 Year Safety Inspection Program. The task force established by Mayor Steve Geller had a chance to work alongside State Representatives Gottlieb, LaMarca, Senator Book, engineers, condo board members, property managers, attorneys and other elected officials. Our group was not the only group that met in South Florida. Miami-Dade County had a task force, the Florida Bar and Board of Rules and Appeals have all convened to evaluate what policies could be changed to improve building safety. All these recommendations are headed to Tallahassee where we are all hoping that the laws will be adopted to address building inspections and regulations governing condominiums. The big question is, do they have the political will to make changes? I invited Hollywood City Commissioner Caryl Schumann who also served on the county's task force to our city to discuss next steps. Her Building Official and Director of Development Services joined with our Building Official Jackson, Director LeRoy, City Manager Earle, Assistant City Manager Ragunoon, Commissioner Anabelle Taub and Vice Mayor Butler to discuss the county's recommendations but to specifically see what policies and municipalities may be able to adopt in the case that the state does not make any changes. One big change is not waiting every 10 years for building inspections. Right now, it is 40 and 50. This is a very long time for buildings particularly along the coast. In many cases buildings also do not perform regular maintenance and put off repairs since they are not done. Hollywood has already reached out to the Board of Rules and Appeals who said they can do 5 but still must follow BORA's 10 year. Hollywood’s philosophy I believe is sound since it will not matter what they need to do in ten years on a building, which coincides with every 5 years. While buildings will have an added cost of inspection their residents and the city will have more ability to make sure the building is safe. We also spoke about how to address what has been dubbed as “engineer shopping." This is where a building hires an engineer but does not like the report that was delivered. It may be more conservative and the work requires more than the building wants to pay for in repairs. They hire another engineer in hopes that it comes in with less rigid requirements to do those repairs. The concern is as a City without the reports we can only take the one that is submitted and sealed. Which one is right? The answer is both so long as they are both sealed by an engineer. Both staffs will be researching this, but the consensus was requiring every report to be submitted and may subject cities to more liability. It was discussed that we can post the state specialists lists that show who the licensed engineers are in the state. Architects cannot submit safety reports; they must be licensed in engineering and electrical specialties. The other item that came up is the utilization of our Code Enforcement Departments. Hollywood is developing a self-inspection model. Condos are being encouraged to perform an annual visual inspection. This is in line with the County Task Force recommendations that each building does reserved studies and funds them. It also ties to the recommendation that condo managers must report concerns to the cities and condo owners. In addition, I preferred the idea that the board of Rules and Appeals Checklist must be sent out to every condo along with every unit owner's tax bill. One issue that we heard about were extension requests. BORA is frowning on them. They believe that condos have had plenty of time to get the inspections done. They are ending up in the special magistrate's courts and fines are being levied at $1,000 dollars a day. The meeting was both informative and useful to move forward with it. Our Staff will be working on these ideas and suggestions. I will continue to update our readers when changes are made. With COVID-19, it has still been a bit hard to make holiday plans. There will not be an annual Turkey Giveaway at the Cheetah that is also hosted by Rodriguez Charities. They are still spreading the cheer. Mr. Rodriguez has graciously donated money toward a Thanksgiving Give Away for those families in need at our local schools and for our “Drive By Turkey Dinner” at the Hepburn Center. For more information visit our web-site. PAL will be doing Shop With COP and I along with many sponsors including sponsors from the City of Dania will be doing Hope for The Holidays. These events are both by invitation only. We gather names from our local schools and PAL to ensure that the neediest are served. I would like to wish everyone a blessed Holiday Season!
