- The Budget: Doing More with Less In Sunny Isles Beach
The Budget: Doing More with Less In Sunny Isles Beach By Dana Robin Goldman - www.sibfl.net - Mayor Sunny Isles Beach August 18, 2022 Share Every year the City adopts a Comprehensive Budget & Five Year Capital Improvement Program for the upcoming fiscal year. Our fiscal year begins October 1, but the preparation and work begins much earlier. We commence budget season in April and every department and division is involved in the process. The budget is driven first and foremost by you – our residents. All members of the Commission prepare their top priorities for the budget based on what we learn from speaking with and listening to the citizens of Sunny Isles Beach. Each Commissioner meets with the City Manager and department heads to direct staff on these priorities. In the months to follow, departments work on putting their budgets together. The goal is always to keep costs low without sacrificing the high level of service and quality the City is known for. The budget is one of the City’s most important annual responsibilities as it identifies and prioritizes projects for the upcoming fiscal year. Though it may seem intimidating at 300+ pages, the budget provides a blueprint for departments as they navigate daily and long-term projects throughout the year. As in previous years, the Commission directed City administration to reduce the millage rate, but in doing so, continue to expand services and programs for residents. In a nutshell, doing more with less. The millage rate is how the City’s property taxes are determined. Breaking it down, the millage rate is one tenth of a percent, which equates to $1 in taxes for every $1,000 in home value. Reducing the millage rate by .1 saves a homeowner $1 for every $1,000 in property value. To calculate property tax, you multiply the total taxable value of the property by the millage rate. As an example, a property valued at $200,000 with a millage rate of 2.1 would pay $420 in property tax to the city (e.g., 200,000 x .0021 = 420). Whereas that same property with a millage rate of 2.0, our proposed millage rate, will pay $400 in property tax to the city. The lower the millage rate, the lower your property taxes. The City aims to lower the millage rate again this year, while maintaining and improving upon our offerings. The budget is a City responsibility that each and every department and division plays a significant role. I want to especially recognize the Finance Department, led by Finance Director Tiffany Neely, for their hard work and long hours dedicated to the budget process. It is no simple or easy feat putting together the budget. The Finance Department reviews every number and calculation down to the penny with focus and precision. This month we will hold a budget workshop where the Commission will review and discuss the budget and capital improvement program for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. In September, we will host two Special City Commission Meetings to review and formally adopt the proposed budget. I invite you to attend or watch online to gain a better understanding of how the budget is put together and approved. More details will be posted on https://www.sibfl.net/events/ and our social media pages as well as sent via email in the coming weeks. For questions pertaining to the budget you can contact Mayor Dana Robin Goldman at mayor@sibfl.net or 305.792.1753. If you would like to watch the two Special City Commission Meetings for the 2022-2023 proposed budget, visit https://www.sibfl.net/media/sibtv/ or call the Sunny Isles Beach Media Department at 305-792-1762 to discuss the live stream schedule. < Previous News Next News >
- Get Into The Wild For Your Mental Well-Being: 6 Outdoor Activities To Reduce Stress And Recharge | sun-times
Get Into The Wild For Your Mental Well-Being: 6 Outdoor Activities To Reduce Stress And Recharge By Feature Impact Jul 24, 2026 Many Americans Are Seeking Ways To Press Reset, Turning To Meditation Apps, Gym Memberships And Beyond To Improve Mental Health. However, There May Be A Simpler (And More Effective) Option: Spending Time In The Great Outdoors. Often viewed as a powerful way to counter the persistent pressures of daily life, outdoor experiences aren't just leisure - they're an effective mental and emotional reset that can rival or even surpass traditional wellness habits in addressing burnout, constant connectivity and daily strain. Better yet, the results take hold quickly: Nearly 73% of respondents to a survey from Eddie Bauer Adventure Club said they begin to feel more relaxed or recharged within an hour of being outdoors. Most respondents agreed a short outdoor trip is at least as effective as their usual wellness routines. People typically gravitate toward experiences that feel achievable within busy schedules. Brief, low-commitment outings can still deliver meaningful benefits. However, barriers persist that keep adventure-seekers indoors. Among respondents, family responsibilities (30%) and work or schedule demands (23%) often prevent them from spending more time outdoors. To overcome those roadblocks and enjoy the benefits of nature, consider this inspirational guide for activities that get you away from the screen and into the wild. Hike a New Trail If you're already a hiker, beginner or expert, stepping onto an unfamiliar trail can offer a refreshing change of pace and perspective. Whether it's a wooded path close to home or a scenic overlook, hiking encourages movement, mindfulness and curiosity, helping quiet mental clutter while creating space to reconnect with yourself and your surroundings. Try Paddle Boarding or Canoeing Get off your feet and into the water with activities like paddle boarding or canoeing, which combine gentle physical activity with calm scenery. Oftentimes, you'll find your focus on managing the watercraft keeps you present in the moment rather than drifting back to the demands waiting on shore. Join an Adventure Club If you crave the wild, wide-open spaces, towering peaks and untamed beauty, the journey can take shape by joining an adventure club. For active explorers seeking connection and balance, the new Eddie Bauer Adventure Club creates unique travel experiences rooted in nature and elevated by comfort. Rugged meets refined as wild destinations turn into welcoming retreats with modern resort condos, as well as future cabins, lodges and tiny homes designed to ignite a spirit of discovery. Guided excursions take you off the grid to inspire adventure and thoughtfully crafted spaces let you recharge in style. From red rocks and winding rivers to serene peaks and sharp air, you can step into landscapes that take your breath away then settle into stays that restore you as naturally as the views outside. Practice Yoga Outdoors Veteran yogis and newcomers alike can enjoy the benefits of taking the mat outside, deepening the sense of calm and connection yoga is already known for. Try a quiet park or your own backyard as a natural setting for stretching, breathing and slowing down, trading fluorescent lights and crowded studios for birdsong, soft winds and rustling trees. Visit a National Park Step away from everyday routines and immerse yourself in breathtaking landscapes by visiting your nearest national park. Depending on your location, towering mountains, expansive deserts, dense forests and rushing waterfalls inspire awe while offering reminders to slow down and appreciate what's around you. Whether you spend a weekend camping, take a scenic drive or simply enjoy a short walk, national parks provide a meaningful escape blending adventure, reflection and restoration. Start or End Your Day with the Sky The simplest outdoor moments can have the greatest impact. Wake up and watch the sunrise for a calm, intentional start the day. Wait until evening settles to stargaze at night, encouraging stillness and perspective. Away from screens and distractions, these quiet moments can help you feel more connected to the world and less consumed by daily pressures. The property is currently 100% percent occupied. It is the first new affordable “high-rise” residential development in the City of Hollywood in more than two decades. Rieger, President and CEO of Housing Trust Group. “Broward County is among the most cost-burdened counties in the entire country, with very limited affordable housing. This property will be a godsend for the many working families and students who currently face long commutes to their jobs in Downtown Hollywood or at the hotels and restaurants along the beach. We are deeply grateful to City Mayor Josh Levy, Communications, Marketing & Economic Development Director Raelin Storey and Director of Development Services Shiv Newaldass for their tireless support of this project.” “This development exemplifies the kind of high quality, well-designed attainable housing that residents can be proud of and that enhances our City,” says Mayor Levy. “The HTG Team has paid attention to every detail to deliver a Class A product that working families can afford.” The $36 Million property, which broke ground in 2020, was financed with a $28 Million construction loan from Chase, $26 Million in 9% Low Income Housing Tax Credits from Florida Housing Finance Corporation syndicated through Raymond James Tax Credit Equity Funds with Chase as the Upper Tier Investor and a $9.75 Million permanent loan from Walker & Dunlop through Freddie Mac. “Hudson Village is a shining example of what affordable housing can and should be and it comes at a time of tremendous need in this community, and throughout South Florida,” said Tammy Haylock-Moore, Chase Bank’s Head of Community Development Lending in Florida. “We’re incredibly proud of our role in bringing Hudson Village to fruition and the impact it will have on the individuals and families who now call it home.” Also in Hollywood, HTG is developing a mixed-use commercial property on a 2.5-acre City-owned site on the east side of North 21st Street, between Filmore and Polk Streets, that will connect via a footbridge to a new commuter rail line connecting each of South Florida’s Downtowns. - Singing The Soundtrack of Her Life: American Idol Alum Kimberley Locke Premieres Autobiographical One-Woman Show
Singing The Soundtrack of Her Life: American Idol Alum Kimberley Locke Premieres Autobiographical One-Woman Show By Joyce R. Forchion - LOVE Aventura February 16, 2023 Share On February 25, 2023 at 8:00 pm, Aventura Arts & Cultural Center audiences will be enchanted by the robust vocal prowess of singer-songwriter Kimberley Locke, the front-running American Idol alum and recording artist who many of her loyal fans consider as entertainment’s quintessential “8th World Wonder.” After gracing the Aventura mainstage a decade ago, Locke will return to the Center to premiere her critically-acclaimed one-woman show, “The Sum of All Parts.” Through selections of storytelling and songs, the performance will chronicle various moments of her life and reveal her introduction to some of her favorite luminaries including Nina Simone, Judy Garland, and Etta James. The musical production will be arranged with a live, 12-person orchestra and staged in an intimate manner reflective of her desire to connect with her audience on a deeper level. “The one-woman show is something that I always wanted to do and I finally developed the confidence to do it,” said Locke. “Once I decided to tell my story, I wrote the show with a close friend of mine with the purpose of diving beneath the surface in terms of a story to share information about myself personally, and not just musically. You’ll surely learn something about Kimberley Locke once you leave the performance, which is the goal.” “The Sum of All Parts” was first conceptualized and performed by Locke in front of a sold-out New York City audience in February 2020– one month before the world’s stage changed forever and theaters went dark due to the pandemic. After headlining Norwegian Cruise Line’s seabound version of the Tony Award-nominated musical “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” Locke is energized and prepared to bask in the spotlight once again. “I want people to be curious about who I am as a person, which will explain who I am as a singer,” she said. Locke views the timing of her premiere during Black History Month as ideal in not only sharing her own story, but also amplifying the voices of significant Black women in hopes of introducing the Aventura audience to new and different perspectives. “My show presents an opportunity to spotlight some important Black women in music who found it crucial to use their voices to tell their stories, and how they were able to move people and penetrate different social issues during their time,” she said. “I’m honored to be on stage to tell these stories while I tell my own story, which creates a richer experience for everyone.” Through her display of vulnerability beyond the bright lights, Locke hopes that her one-woman show will inspire audiences to tap into their inner abilities to heal certain aspects of their own lives. “Over the years, I’ve learned that by sharing, we not only heal ourselves, but it helps other people heal as well. Being more vulnerable in 2023 is something I wish to do, both mentally and emotionally, to open the book of my life for people to read.” Locke anticipates an incomparable exchange of energy between herself and her show’s attendees. “There’s something magical about being aligned and in tune with a live orchestra, and I can’t wait to bring the experience to Aventura,” she said. “When people come to my show, I want to tell a story as a person while the audience receives the joy of my gift.” Tickets for “The Sum of All Parts” can be purchased at Ticketmaster, or from the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center box office. Additional event details, such as the availability of VIP and premium packages, can be found here. For more information on Kimberley Locke’s premiere, please visit www.aventuracenter.org . - William “Bill” Julian: He Will Leave Behind A Stellar Record Of Public Service
William “Bill” Julian: He Will Leave Behind A Stellar Record Of Public Service By Stephen Cummings September 2, 2021 Share Bill proudly served as a City Commissioner and Vice Mayor for twelve years, bringing forth many agenda items and contributing toward the positive growth in Hallandale Beach. One of Bill’s favorite service projects, was the annual Kiwanis Christmas in July Fundraiser, benefitting all of the children, living in shelters, in Broward County. Bill would transport hot dogs, rolls, bottled water and chips in his truck, to the BB&T Center, for the event and place all of the items, on a palette jack and delivering them, to the concession area. The City Of Hallandale Beach, recently lost one of its most venerable residents, with the passing of William “Bill” Julian. Bill proudly served as a City Commissioner and Vice Mayor for twelve years, bringing forth many agenda items, contributing toward the positive growth, in Hallandale Beach. He will leave behind a stellar record of public service, including: Membership in The Kiwanis Club Of Hallandale Beach, The Italian American Club, The American Legion Post 310 and as a public servant, to the residents who voted him into office. After graduating from South Broward High School in 1970, Bill served two tours of duty, in the United States Air Force, before assisting his father, with racing thoroughbred horses, in South Florida and across the country. Bill will be remembered, for his affable personality and indefatigable energy, volunteering and raising funds, for local charities. As an active Kiwanis Member, for over twenty years, Bill exhibited a style of leadership, that others could emulate and always, conquering obstacles, without complaints. Bill raised tens of thousands of dollars, benefitting The Kiwanis Club Of Hallandale Beach, The Hallandale High School Key Club and The Hallandale Police Athletic and Activities League, through his Annual Pasta Dinner Fundraiser. He solicited donations from local merchants, gathered raffle prizes and received much of the food, complimentary from local restaurants, while the other Kiwanis Members, rode his shirttails. The event became so popular, that we not only filled The Hallandale Beach Cultural Center to capacity, but set up tables for patrons, in the side rooms. Bill could develop a simple idea, into a profitable fundraiser, by organizing the largest Cuban Sandwich and selling tickets to the event, complimented by music and prizes, covered by radio and television stations, as well as, the print media with all of the proceeds, going to charity. When Hurricane Wilma devastated South Florida in 2005, Bill could be seen handing out bags of sand, to the community and joined a convoy, of first responders from Hallandale Beach, transporting needed supplies to Mississippi and New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina. One of my fondest memories with Bill, was taking deserving children shopping at Christmas Time, at Walmart for, The Annual Shop With A Cop Event. Police Officers and volunteers, would escort children, who were lucky enough to receive a gift card, entitling them to purchase video games or clothing. One year, Bill chaperoned a family of three children, who all wanted bicycles, but the gift card limit, was insufficient to cover the cost. Bill dipped into his pocket and made up the difference, including, buying a safety helmet, for each child. When young athletes from our local PAL Program were short on funds, to travel to national tournaments, Bill arranged a carwash, ensuring their participation. Julian was a long-time fan of car racing and proudly showcased, his shiny red 1986 Corvette, in local car shows and rode a Harley Davidson Motorcycle, for many years. Another one of my favorite memories that Bill seldom shared, was that he was employed at the iconic Jaxson’s Ice Shop in Dania Beach, while being a high school student, earning $1 per hour, but relished the penalty for making a sundae incorrectly, requiring him to devour it. The countless anecdotes about Bill Julian will always be shared by his friends, but he will long be remembered, as one who was compassionate, kind and relentlessly focused on the mission, without complaining. Bill overcame many health issues the past four years, including: Dialysis, A Stroke, A Heart Attack, Stents and even losing both legs, to Diabetes, but he never expressed any vitriol or lashed out, in a vituperative manner. Hallandale Beach lost a true gentleman and a great role model and public servant. Rest In Peace, Bill Julian, you personify being a true American! Stephen Cummings, is a Founding Member, of The Kiwanis Club Of Hallandale Beach and a past, Kiwanis LT. Governor. < Previous News Next News >

- A New State Of Segregation: Vaccine Cards Are Just The Beginning
A New State Of Segregation: Vaccine Cards Are Just The Beginning By John W. Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead August 12, 2021 Share “Yes, COVID-19 has taken a significant toll on the nation emotionally, physically and economically, but, there are still greater dangers on the horizon.” John W. Whitehead “The things we were worried would happen, are happening.”—Angus Johnston, professor at the City University of New York. Imagine it: a national classification system, that not only categorizes you according to your health status, but also allows the government to sort you, in a hundred other ways: by gender, orientation, wealth, medical condition, religious beliefs, political viewpoint, legal status, etc. This is the slippery slope, upon which we are embarking, one that begins with Vaccine Passports and ends with a National System Of Segregation. It has already begun. With every passing day, more and more private businesses and government agencies, on both the state and federal levels, are requiring proof of a COVID-19 Vaccination, in order for individuals to work, travel, shop, attend school and generally, participate in, the life of the country. No matter what one’s views may be, regarding the government’s handling of the COVID-19 Pandemic, this is an unnerving proposition, for a country that claims to prize the rights of the individual and whose Bill of Rights was written in such a way, as to favor the rights of the minority. By allowing government agents to establish a litmus test, for individuals to be able to engage in commerce, movement and any other right, that corresponds to life in a supposedly, free society, it lays the groundwork for a “show me your papers” society, in which, you are required to identify yourself, at any time to any government worker, who demands it, for any reason. Such tactics, can quickly escalate into a power-grab that empowers government agents to force anyone and everyone, to prove that they are in compliance with every statute and regulation, on the books. Mind you, there are thousands of statutes and regulations, on the books. Indeed, in this era of over-criminalization, it is estimated, that the average American, unknowingly, breaks, at least, three laws a day. This is also how the right to move about freely has been undermined, overtaken and rewritten into a privilege, granted by the government, to those citizens, who are prepared to toe the line. It used to be that, “we the people” had the right to come and go as we please, without the fear of being stopped, questioned by police or forced to identify ourselves. In other words, unless the police had a reasonable suspicion, that a person was guilty of wrongdoing, they had no legal authority to stop the person and require identification. Unfortunately, in this age of COVID-19, that unrestricted right to move about freely is being pitted against the government’s power to lock down communities at a moment’s notice. In this tug-of-war, between individual freedoms and government power, “we the people,” have been on the losing end, of the deal. Now Vaccine Passports, Vaccine Admission Requirements and travel restrictions, may seem like small, necessary steps, in winning the war against the COVID-19 Virus, but, that’s just, so much propaganda. They’re only necessary to the police state, in its efforts, to further brainwash the populace, into believing that the government, legitimately has the power to enforce such blatant acts of authoritarianism. This is how you imprison a populace and lock down a nation. It makes no difference, if such police state tactics, are carried out in the name of national security or protecting America’s borders and making America healthy again: the philosophy remains the same, it is a mindset and it is not friendly, to freedom. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t live in a constitutional republic, if you allow the government to act, like a police state. You can’t claim to value freedom, if you allow the government, to operate, like a dictatorship. You can’t expect to have your rights respected, if you allow the government to treat whomever it pleases with disrespect and an utter disregard, for the rule of law. If you’re tempted to justify these draconian measures for whatever reason—for the sake of health concerns, the economy or national security, beware, there’s always, a boomerang effect. Whatever dangerous practices you allow the government to carry out now, rest assured, these same practices can and will be used against you, when the government decides, to set its sights, on you. The war on drugs turned out to be a war on the American people, waged with SWAT teams and militarized police. The war on terror turned out to be a war on the American people, waged with warrantless surveillance and indefinite detention, for those who dare to disagree. The war on immigration, turned out to be a war on the American people, waged with roving government agents demanding “papers, please.” This war on COVID-19 is turning out to be yet another war on the American people, waged with all of the surveillance weaponry and tracking mechanisms, at the government’s disposal. You see, when you talk about empowering government agents to screen the populace in order to control and prevent the spread of this virus, what you’re really talking about, is creating a society in which ID cards, round ups, checkpoints and detention centers, become routine weapons, used by the government to control and suppress the populace, no matter, what the threat is. No one is safe or immune. And as I illustrate in my new novel, The Erik Blair Diaries, no one gets spared the anguish, fear and heartache of living in a police state. That’s the message being broadcast 24/7 with every new piece of government propaganda, every new law that criminalizes otherwise lawful activity, every new policeman on the beat, every new surveillance camera, casting a watchful eye, every sensationalist news story that titillates and distracts, every new prison or detention center, built to house troublemakers and other undesirables, every new court ruling that gives government agents, a green light to strip, steal. rape and ravage the citizenry, at every school that opts to indoctrinate rather than educate, every new justification for why, Americans should comply with the government’s attempts to trample on the Constitution, underfoot. Yes, COVID-19 has taken a significant toll on the nation: emotionally, physically and economically, but, there are still greater dangers, on the horizon. As long as “we the people,” continue to allow the government to trample our rights, in the so-called name of national security, things will get worse, not better and it's already worse. We’ve been having this same debate about the perils of government overreach, for the past 50-plus years, still we don’t yet seem to learn, or if we learn, we learn, too late. Curiously enough, these COVID-19 Mandates, Restrictions and Vaccine Card Requirements, dovetail conveniently with a national timeline for states to comply with the Real ID Act, which imposes federal standards on identity documents, such as state drivers’ licenses and a prelude, to a national identification system. Talk about a perfect storm for bringing about a national ID card, the ultimate, human tracking device. In the absence of a national ID card, which would make the police state’s task of monitoring, tracking and singling out individual suspects, are far simpler, than, “we the people” are already being tracked, in a myriad of ways: through our state driver’s licenses, Social Security numbers, bank accounts, purchases and electronic transactions; biometrics; by way of our correspondence and communication devices (email, phone calls and mobile phones); through chips implanted in our vehicles, identification documents and even, in our clothing. Add to this, the fact that businesses, schools and other facilities, are relying more and more on fingerprints and facial recognition to identify us. All the while, data companies such as Acxiom, are capturing vast caches of personal information to help airports, retailers, police and other government authorities, to instantly determine whether someone is the person, that he or she, claims to be. This informational glut — used to great advantage by both the government and corporate sectors, has converged into a mandate for “an internal passport,” a.k.a., a national ID card that would store information as basic, as a person’s name, birth date and place of birth, as well as private information, including a Social Security number, fingerprint, retinal scan, personal, criminal and financial records. A federalized, computerized, cross-referenced, databased system of identification policed by government agents, would be the final nail in the coffin, for privacy (not to mention, a logistical security nightmare that would leave Americans, even more vulnerable to every hacker, in the cybersphere). Americans have always resisted adopting a national ID card for good reason: National ID card systems have been used before, by other oppressive governments, in the name of national security, invariably with horrifying results. After all, such a system gives the government and its agents, the ultimate power to target, track and terrorize the populace, according to the government’s own, nefarious purposes. For instance, in Germany, the Nazis required all Jews to carry special stamped ID cards for travel within the country. A prelude to the yellow Star of David badges, these stamped cards, were instrumental in identifying Jews for deportation, to death camps in Poland. Author Raul Hilberg, summarizes the impact that such a system had, on the Jews: The whole identification system, with its personal documents, specially assigned names, conspicuous tagging in public, was a powerful weapon in the hands, of the police. First, the system was an auxiliary device, that facilitated the enforcement of residence and movement restrictions. Second, it was an independent control measure, in that it enabled the police to pick up any Jew, anywhere, anytime. Third and perhaps most important, identification, had a paralyzing effect, on its victims. In South Africa during apartheid, pass books were used to regulate the movement of black citizens and segregate the population. The Pass Laws Act of 1952 stipulated where, when and for how long a black African, could remain in certain areas. Any government employee, could strike out entries, which cancelled the permission to remain in an area. A pass book that did not have a valid entry, resulted in the arrest and imprisonment, of the bearer. Identity cards, have played a crucial role in the genocide of the Tutsis in the central African country of Rwanda. The assault, carried out by extremist Hutu militia groups, lasted around 100 days and resulted in close to a million deaths. While the ID cards, were not a precondition to the genocide, they were a facilitating factor. Once the genocide began, the production of an identity card with the designation “Tutsi,” spelled a death sentence, at any roadblock. Identity cards have also helped oppressive regimes carry out eliminationist policies, such as mass expulsion, forced relocation and group denationalization. Through the use of identity cards, Ethiopian authorities were able to identify people with Eritrean affiliation, during the mass expulsion of 1998. The Vietnamese government, was able to locate ethnic Chinese, easier, during their 1978-79 expulsion. The USSR used identity cards to force the relocation of ethnic Koreans (1937), Volga Germans (1941), Kamyks and Karachai (1943), Crimean Tartars, Meshkhetian Turks, Chechens, Ingush and Balkars (1944) and ethnic Greeks (1949). The ethnic Vietnamese were identified for group denationalization through identity cards in Cambodia in 1993, as were the Kurds, in Syria, in 1962. In the United States, post-9/11, more than 750 Muslim men, were rounded up on the basis of their religion and ethnicity, detained for up to eight months. Their experiences, echo those of 120,000 Japanese-Americans, who were similarly detained 75 years ago, following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Despite a belated apology and monetary issuance by the U.S. government, the U.S. Supreme Court, has yet to declare such an illegal practice. Moreover, laws such as the National Defense Authorization Act, (NDAA) empower the government to arrest and indefinitely, detain anyone they “suspect,” of being an enemy, of the state. At some point, it will not matter, whether your skin is black or yellow or brown or white. It will not matter, whether you’re an immigrant or a citizen. It will not matter, whether you’re rich or poor. It won’t even matter, whether you’ve been Properly Medicated, Vaccinated or Indoctrinated. Government jails will hold you, just as easily, whether you’ve obeyed every law or broken, a dozen. Government bullets will kill you, just as easily, whether you’re complying with a police officer’s order or questioning his tactics. Whether or not, you’ve done anything wrong, government agents, will treat you like a suspect, simply because they have been trained to view and treat everyone, like potential criminals. Eventually, as I make it clear in my book, Battlefield America: The War on the American People, when the police state has turned that final screw and slammed that final door, all that will matter, is whether or not, a government agent, chooses to single you out, for special treatment. < Previous News Next News >

- Fluke Martini & Crudo Bar Debuts - Miami Beach's Beloved Italian Hotspot Turned A Stroke Of Luck Into A Seafood-Driven Small Plates And Cocktail Bar | sun-times
Fluke Martini & Crudo Bar Debuts - Miami Beach's Beloved Italian Hotspot Turned A Stroke Of Luck Into A Seafood-Driven Small Plates And Cocktail Bar Aventura Digest Jun 18, 2025 What Began As A "Fluke" Is Now Fluke. This Spring, The Team Behind Macchialina—One Of The City's Most Beloved Italian Restaurants—Is Turning The Tides On Alton Road, This Time With A Bolder, Brinier Approach. Stationed In Macchialina's Original Indoor Space, Fluke, An Elevated Oyster And Crudo Bar With A Bold Cocktail Program Is Casting A New Net For Miami Beach Dwellers With A Hankering For Fresh Fish. Inspired By The Travels And Epicurean Adventures Of Award-Winning Hospitality Mavens, Executive Chef Michael Pirolo, And Managing Partners Jennifer Chaefsky And Jacqueline Pirolo, Fluke Blends The Simplicity Of Quality Seafood With A Laid-Back, Self-Service Format, Offering A New Way To Dine In A Familiar Space. "Twelve years ago, we never could have imagined the success Macchialina would achieve,” says Chef Michael Pirolo. “What started as ‘the little restaurant that wouldn't quit’ turned into a 5,600-square foot expansion with a newfound opportunity to build on our roots and bring Fluke to life. This stroke of luck is how we landed on the name 'Fluke' – it’s a celebration of those happy coincidences that aligned perfectly to make this exciting new chapter possible.” At Fluke, the cavernous warmth and timeless exposed brick of Macchialina are preserved, while a moody black marble bar adds a striking refresh. This transformation to an oyster bar concept is evident in both the menu and the ambiance—dimly lit, effortlessly elegant, where freshly shucked oysters and chilled martinis set the tone. The self-service model invites guests to mark their selections on petite paper menus, offering a laid-back, interactive dining experience with elevated eats and perfectly paired libations. Cocktail servers will deliver drinks while the kitchen, helmed by Chef de cuisine and Uchi alum, Trevor Zwaan, focuses on churning out a rotating selection of crudo preparations and crispy-fried crustaceans. Overseeing day-to-day operations is Manager Samantha Harris, who joined the Macchialina team in November 2023. “The idea was to reimagine the OG indoor space at Macchialina for the community that’s supported us for over a decade while bringing a fun and fresh idea to the neighborhood. No reservations—just drop in for a martini and oysters or stay for a full meal. The menu is refined yet still approachable, staying true to what Macchialina has always been about: great food, electric atmosphere and zero pretense” says Jacqueline Pirolo. On the menu, guests can look forward to crudo standouts like Fluke with tomato guazzetto and baby caponata, Madai (Japanese Sea Bream) with plum vinaigrette and Thai chili, and Branzino with artichoke gremolata, citrus oil, and preserved lemon. Fried favorites include rosemary salt-dusted Hand-Cut Fries with senape sauce, Fried Mussels Marinara, and Fried Shrimp with artichoke remoulade. The Big Macch Burger, previously a coveted off-menu special, has a permanent place on the menu—boasting a perfect beef-to-bun ratio, melty Fontina cheese, mushrooms, and absolutely no ketchup. “We wanted to do seafood the way we love to eat it—simple, high-quality, and always inspired.” says chef Michael Pirolo. “We’re bringing that same philosophy to Fluke; it’s all about letting the ingredients shine without overcomplicating things. Miami Beach has incredible access to fresh seafood, and we’re excited to give it the love and respect it deserves, but with our own spin.” Jacqueline Pirolo’s wine list marks a departure from Macchialina’s famously all-Italian selection, embracing clean, natural, and biodynamic wines. Guests can expect French whites, light-bodied reds, and plenty of bubbles, with highlights like Loire Valley Chenin Blanc, chilled Beaujolais, and Champagne. Complementing the martini-focused cocktail program—developed by Oren Drori under Pirolo’s direction—is a curated selection of sherry and dry Marsala, nodding to Southern European drinking traditions. Drori, formerly of Beaker & Grey, led the beverage program at Macchialina for a year and also developed the cocktail menu at Bar Bucce. Fluke will also host the Lucky $7 Martini Happy Hour from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., featuring a selection of martinis for just seven dollars. The small but expertly curated beverage program reflects Fluke’s coastal essence, offering ocean-inspired libations designed to highlight the delicate flavors of the sea. Fluke opened on Wednesday May 21st, 2025 at 820 Alton Road, Miami Beach, Florida 33139. Fluke will not be taking reservations, seating is first come, first served. Previous Next
