Michael Stern: Colorectal Cancer Awareness: Aventura Public Communicators Group Wins Gold Viddy Award August 10, 2023 Share In an era where effective communication plays a vital role in raising awareness and driving social change, the Aventura Public Communicators Group has recently achieved a remarkable feat. The outstanding Short Film, "Michael Stern: Colorectal Cancer Awareness," has been honored with the prestigious Gold Viddy Award from The Association Of Marketing And Communications Professionals. This recognition is a testament to the group's commitment to delivering impactful messages and their dedication to Public Health Initiatives. Aventura Commissioner (2005-2014, 2022-2026) Michael Stern recently made a post to tell his story on: www.fightcolorectalcancer.org "I found out about my Cancer Diagnosis after waking up from my Colonoscopy in October 2019. At that time, it was unknown what stage I was at, just that it was most likely a Cancerous Polyp. It took about a week to find out it progressed to Stage IV." "I turned to Google, which was a very big mistake. After reading most of the results that I had about a 14% chance of living past five years, my life stood still for that moment. All I could think of is, "Will I see my kids grow up?" and "What do I say to them?" "How can I leave my family at this time? I have so much more to do." It took me a few weeks to come to grips with things. I started to think in a different direction." "I was very fortunate to have my wife (aka "my rock") stand by my side and listen to the waterfall of information thrown at me, as I was unable to comprehend anything. She was able to help me process things. I found the best medical team and focused on anything I can do to beat this. I surrounded myself with an incredible support system, family, and friends, who pushed me every day to keep going and stay strong. After multiple surgeries, Chemo Treatments, Temporary Ileostomy, and then a permanent one, CT Scans, MRIs, blood draws, and port flushes, I stand here today NED [No Evidence of Disease] and stronger than ever." "Having the right mindset in a Cancer journey is half the battle." "Advice: The fear for me was getting that Colonoscopy. It was the total opposite of what I thought it was. It was so easy. I wish I knew this sooner, as I would have gotten my Colonoscopy a few years earlier. The Polyp could have been found early and prevented me from having Cancer. My advice is simple. GET A COLONOSCOPY! It could save your life." "Whatever part of the Cancer journey you are on, take this life-changing event as an opportunity to do whatever you really want to do. Focusing on being positive. Try to get rid of Stress. Remove the fear. Enjoy and appreciate all the good things." Michael Stern Stage IV Colon Cancer Patients & Survivors Raising Awareness For Colorectal Cancer By sharing his story via Online and Short Film he not only educates viewers about the importance of Early Detection and Prevention but also serves as a source of inspiration and hope for those facing similar challenges. Colorectal Cancer is one of the leading causes of Cancer-Related Deaths globally. Despite its prevalence, the disease often goes undetected until it reaches advanced stages. Colorectal Cancer Screening can save your life. While over 90% of Colon and Rectal Cancers are found in people over age 50, anyone at any age can get Colorectal Cancer. All adults should talk to their doctor about when to start Screening for Polyps and Cancer. The general population should begin screening at age 45. Those with a family history of Colorectal Cancer or Precancerous Colorectal Polyps may need to begin Screening before age 45, and anyone experiencing signs and symptoms of Colorectal Cancer (at any age) should have their symptoms evaluated. Screening should follow regular intervals through age 75 (the interval depends on which Screening method is used), and people over 75 should talk to their doctor about whether Screening is necessary. The Film serves as a reminder that Prevention and Early Intervention can significantly improve outcomes for individuals battling Colorectal Cancer. So take time to make that appointment, it could make a huge difference in your life. - Get Up, Stand Up, Don’t Give Up the Fight: Know Your Rights or You Will Lose Them
Get Up, Stand Up, Don’t Give Up the Fight: Know Your Rights or You Will Lose Them By John & Nisha Whitehead June 6, 2024 Share If America’s schools are to impart principles of freedom and democracy to future generations, they must start by respecting the constitutional rights of their students. Take the case of Lucas Hudson. With all the negative press being written about today’s young people, it’s refreshing to meet a young person who not only knows his rights but is prepared to stand up for them. Lucas is a smart kid, a valedictorian of his graduating class at the Collegiate Academy at Armwood High School in Hillsborough County, Fla. So, when school officials gave Lucas an ultimatum: either remove most of his speech’s religious references from his graduation speech—in which he thanked the people who helped shape his character, reflected on how quickly time goes by, and urged people to use whatever time they have to love others and serve the God who loves us—or he would not be speaking at all, Lucas refused to forfeit his rights. That’s when Lucas’s father turned to The Rutherford Institute for help. In coming to Lucas’ defense, attorneys for The Rutherford Institute warned school officials that their attempts to browbeat Lucas into watering down his graduation speech could expose the school to a First Amendment lawsuit. Thankfully for Lucas, the school backed down, and he was able to deliver his speech as written. It doesn’t always work out so well, unfortunately. Over the course of The Rutherford Institute’s 42-year history, we have defended countless young people who found themselves censored, silenced and denied their basic First Amendment rights, especially when they chose to exercise their rights to free speech and religious freedom. In case after case, we encounter an appalling level of ignorance on the part of public school officials who mistakenly believe that the law requires anything religious be banned from public schools. Here’s where government officials get it wrong: while the government may not establish or compel a particular religion, it also may not silence and suppress religious speech merely because others might take offense. People are free to ignore, disagree with, or counter the religious speech of others, but the government cannot censor private religious speech. Unfortunately, you can only defend your rights when you know them, and the American people—and those who represent them—are utterly ignorant about their freedoms, history, and how the government is supposed to operate. As Morris Berman points out in his book Dark Ages America, “70 percent of American adults cannot name their senators or congressmen; more than half don’t know the actual number of senators, and nearly a quarter cannot name a single right guaranteed by the First Amendment. Sixty-three percent cannot name the three branches of government. Other studies reveal that uninformed or undecided voters often vote for the candidate whose name and packaging (e.g., logo) are the most powerful; color is apparently a major factor in their decision.” More than government corruption and ineptitude, police brutality, terrorism, gun violence, drugs, illegal immigration or any other so-called “danger” that threatens our nation, civic illiteracy may be what finally pushes us over the edge. As Thomas Jefferson warned, no nation can be both ignorant and free. Unfortunately, the American people have existed in a technology-laden, entertainment-fueled, perpetual state of cluelessness for so long that civic illiteracy has become the new normal for the citizenry. Yet those who founded this country knew quite well that every citizen must remain vigilant or freedom would be lost. As Thomas Paine recognized, “It is the responsibility of the patriot to protect his country from its government.” You have no rights unless you exercise them. Still, you can’t exercise your rights unless you know what those rights are. Education precedes action. There is a movement underway to require that all public-school students pass the civics portion of the U.S. naturalization test—100 basic facts about U.S. history and civics—before receiving their high-school diploma, and that’s a start. Lucas Hudson would have passed such a test with flying colors. On graduation day, Lucas stepped up to the podium and delivered his uncensored valedictorian speech as written, without any interference by school censors. As Lucas’s father relayed to The Rutherford Institute: “In the end, Lucas got to give his entire speech the way he wanted to give it, and everybody was paying attention. Nobody got hurt. Nothing bad happened. It was just a young man using the First Amendment rights to speak his mind regarding his personal beliefs. [Lucas] never thought a few sentences in a speech would create such a controversy in his world, but this speech turned into a defining moment for him. He will never be the same after this experience, but this permanent change is a good thing. When it mattered, Lucas stood up for himself, and when those he stood up against tried to push him down, [The Rutherford Institute] came to his aide and backed him up to make it a fair fight. I am comforted to know you are defending the rights of the people. These fights matter. Every time you defend the rights of one person, you defend the rights of every person. You helped my son fight for his rights against the school, and, in doing so, Hillsborough County Public Schools will think twice before infringing on the rights of future students. Your defense of Lucas became an inspiration for the students in his school and sparked a healthy and meaningful debate among the teachers, students, and parents about the value of the First Amendment and the need for limits on government control over our personal beliefs. You are fighting for good and doing important work. Don’t ever stop. Thank you, Rutherford Institute, for being there for my son when he needed you most.” America needs more freedom fighters like Lucas Hudson and The Rutherford Institute. It’s up to us. We have the power to make and break the government. We the American people—the citizenry—are the arbiters and ultimate guardians of America’s welfare, defense, liberty, laws and prosperity. We must act—and act responsibly. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, it’s our job to keep freedom alive using every nonviolent means available to us. Know your rights. Exercise your rights. Defend your rights. If not, you will lose them. - Modern Jewish Theology The First One Hundred Years, 1835–1935 | sun-times
Modern Jewish Theology The First One Hundred Years, 1835–1935 By jps.org Jun 18, 2026 Modern Jewish Theology Is The First Comprehensive Collection Of Jewish Theological Ideas From The Pathbreaking Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Featuring Selections From More Than Thirty Of The Most Influential Jewish Thinkers Of The Era, Explorations Of Judaism’s Identity, Uniqueness, And Relevance, The Origin Of Ethical Monotheism, And The Possibility Of Jewish Existentialism. These Works—Most Translated For The First Time Into English By Top Scholars In Modern Jewish History And Philosophy—Reveal How Modern Jewish Theology Developed In Concert With Broader Trends In Jewish Intellectual And Social Modernization, Especially Scholarship (Wissenschaft Des Judentums), Politics (Liberalism And Zionism), And Religious Practice (Movement Judaism And The Struggles To Transcend Denominational Boundaries). This anthology thus opens to the English-language reader a true treasure house of source material from the formative years of modern Jewish thought, bringing together writings from the very first generations, who imagined biblical and rabbinic texts and modern scientific research would produce a synthetic view of God, Israel, and the world. A general introduction and chapter introductions guide students and non-specialists through the key themes and transformations in modern Jewish theology, and extensive annotations immerse them in the latest scholarship. Praise “Exciting! This anthology has the potential to help reframe the entire field of modern Jewish thought. Its study tends to leave out the nineteenth century almost totally—and yet, as the editors show, this was an extremely important period for the development of Jewish thought and the attempt to negotiate modern sensibilities about religion and science.” — Robert Erlewine, Professor and Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Eastern Michigan University and Author of Judaism and the West: From Hermann Cohen to Joseph Soloveitchik. “What a gold mine! You have before you the keys to a world of rich, provocative, and often still startlingly relevant Jewish thinking. There was a robust Jewish theological conversation before Heschel and Soloveitchik, before Kaplan and Levinas, before Plaskow and Adler, but only now, with this wonderful volume, has this vital world opened to non-specialists and non-German readers.” — Shai Held, President and Dean at Hadar and Author of The Heart of Torah. “Modern Jewish Theology will be an indispensable and enduring resource for scholars, students, and teachers.” — Asher D. Biemann, Professor in the Department of Religious Studies, Jewish Studies Program, University of Virginia. About The Author Samuel J. Kessler is Lyons Chair in Judaic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Author of The Formation of a Modern Rabbi: The Life and Times of the Viennese Scholar and Preacher Adolf Jellinek. George Y. Kohler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Jewish Philosophy and Director of the Joseph Carlebach Institute for Jewish Theology at Bar Ilan University. The enthusiasm and the love of Israel, was indeed, palpable. Learning of several City Commissioners’ proposals to ”farm out” the Sanitation Department, angered several members. The awesome sanitation department in our City, not only provides garbage collection and other services, they also help in times of natural disasters, to help secure our City and help clean up debris, afterwards. Outsourcing contracts, often require that there is an uncapped up-charge to be paid, in addition for those services. Mayor Joy Cooper commented by text, "I believe with the new leadership in the City Manager's office and DPW, this service can be retained and actually be provided for, efficiently.” Patriots will actively campaign for keeping the services local, caring about the workers who take pride in COHB and go beyond their job descriptions, to service our residents. At the May 18th, 2021 monthly meeting, Laurie Cardoza-Moore of Proclaiming Justice to the Nations, gave a compelling presentation on what every conservative American patriot, parent and grandparent must know –“Taking Back America’s Children” brings wisdom, insight and an action plan on protecting our next generation of American leadership, turning our nation back to faith, values and freedom. She showed paragraphs from US textbooks actually rewriting history to insidiously indoctrinate children into Socialism and Anti-Semitic feelings. Ruben Young, Candidate for USC District 23, gave a passionate introductory speech. Primary candidates are all welcome to come to the meetings and the club continues to grow larger, every month. Members eagerly discussed planning and task assignment for the MEMORIAL Day Remem-brance Event to be held at 220 Southwest 6th Avenue, Hallandale Beach. Residents including Police & Firefighters are welcome, as we honor those who have sacrificed for our Country and Vets who served or are serving, now. It was decided that hot dogs and hamburgers are free for Gold Star families, Police, Fire and Active-Duty military. Others can buy $1, $2, or $5 tickets good for raffles, food and beverages. Games, contests, prizes and a variety of food should assure a good time. Remember to bring your best apple pie and wear your best patriotic outfit to win! Meetings are every 3rd Tuesday at Upper Deck Grill & Sports Bar from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the next meeting is on June 15th, 2021. - Sunny Isles Beach Community Spotlight: Tomer Shaked
Sunny Isles Beach Community Spotlight: Tomer Shaked City of Sunny Isles Beach - www.sibfl.net/tomer-shaked/ March 2, 2023 Share Valuing and cherishing the diversity in our community is important for Sunny Isles Beach resident, Tomer Shaked. The 17-year-old high school senior has lived in Sunny Isles Beach his entire life and dedicates his time to volunteering and helping the younger generation through academic and personal development. In middle school, Tomer began working with Rabbi Amar at his local Chabad by organizing any special event the Chabad hosted throughout the year. When he entered high school a few years later, Tomer switched gears and started working with the Rabbi by helping younger people overcome addictions. “I really do feel like I’m making a change,” says Shaked. “I used to have that problem myself with gaming and every single time I do that with someone else, I feel like I’m saving them from something I had to endure for many years.” Tomer hopes that his hands-on work is enhancing the quality of people’s lives. He plans to continue his work helping the community by becoming a civil litigator after attending college and law school. Last year he was even able to attend a law school for a full semester where he worked directly with law school professors arguing Supreme Court cases against a panel of judges. Tomer views getting involved in the community as an obligation, especially for the younger generations. Whether it’s going out and cleaning up the environment or spreading awareness about an important topic in the world, he is passionate about making a difference. “I’m very passionate about the younger people in the community as they have by far the most potential,” Tomer explains. “In the future, they are going to be the ones taking the big positions and making a big impact in our community.” Tomer has some advice for his younger peers: “Trying new things will open opportunities. I really do feel like if you take that step into the unknown, there’s a lot waiting for you.” As a youth leader in the Sunny Isles Beach community, Tomer has a bright future ahead. He is appreciative of the acknowledgement his work is getting in the community and is excited about all the work younger people are doing and going to do in the future.
