March Is Women's History Month Honoring The Hospitality Industry’s Revolutionary Women Aventura Digest Mar 19, 2025 March Is Women’s History Month, A Time To Reflect On The Trailblazers Who Have Shaped Industries, Shattered Ceilings, And Redefined Success. Nowhere Is Their Impact More Evident Than In The Hospitality Industry, Where Women Have Long Been At The Forefront—Revolutionizing Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, And Guest Experiences. From the legendary Alice Waters, who pioneered the farm-to-table movement, to industry powerhouses like Arne Sorenson, who championed diversity in leadership, women have transformed the way we dine, travel, and experience hospitality. Yet, their contributions often go unrecognized. This month, we celebrate the chefs, hoteliers, entrepreneurs, and innovators whose passion and perseverance continue to redefine the industry. Whether it’s Dominique Crenn earning her place as the first female chef in the U.S. with three Michelin stars, or visionary hotel executives paving the way for a more inclusive future, their stories inspire the next generation of hospitality leaders. Join us as we honor four extraordinary Miami women, spotlight their achievements, and recognize their undeniable influence on an industry built on warmth, service, and innovation. Because when women rise, so does hospitality. Eileen Andrade, Amelia’s 1931, Miami: Eileen Andrade, a renowned Miami chef, traces her culinary roots to Islas Canarias, her family’s iconic Cuban restaurant. From a young age, she immersed herself in the kitchen, cultivating a passion for gastronomy. Venturing out with her brother, she launched the Cuban Cube food truck which gained rapid popularity. A transformative trip to South Korea in 2013 exposed Andrade to new flavors, reshaping her approach to cooking. This journey laid the foundation for her restaurant, Finka Table & Tap, which opened in 2014, blending Korean and Cuban influences. The restaurant quickly became a hit, marking the beginning of Andrade’s ascent in Miami’s culinary scene. In 2017, Andrade introduced Amelia’s 1931, a cozy diner paying homage to her grandmother. Media acclaim prompted further expansion, leading to Barbakoa by Finka in Doral, blending Cuban, Korean and Peruvian cuisines. In 2023, Andrade transformed Amelia’s 1931, expanding its footprint and reinventing its concept. The redesigned space, with a speakeasy vibe and chic aesthetic, features a new menu and signature cocktails. The restaurant’s success reinforces Andrade’s status as a rising star in Miami’s culinary landscape. Andrea Moreno, Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by Capital One: A Miami native, Andrea Moreno, PR and Marketing Director of South Beach Wine and Food Festival is a graduate of FIU School of Hospitality and Management and a driving force behind that Festival’s well-earned reputation as one of the most popular, largest and most successful food & wine fundraisers in the country. Her role as a Director at the Festival seemed preordained as she started her career as a Public Relations intern at Brustman Carrino Public Relations, which oversees the public relations for the Festival. The diehard Panther (FIU alumnus) and talented publicist quickly rose up the ranks not just becoming an Account Executive at the agency, overseeing all manner of food & beverage-centric accounts but taking lead on the Festival account. Her blend of genuine enthusiasm, strategic smarts, positive attitude and drive for success made her both a valuable member of the BCPR team but the ideal candidate to head such a challenging and multi-layered campaign. In 2020, as the Festival – and the world at large – prepared for its post-COVID-19 incarnation Andrea was able to transition seamlessly in house at the Festival and make it her complete professional focus. During her time the Festival has not just survived but thrived, enjoying record-breaking attendance, ticket sales and most importantly, raised millions of dollars for its beneficiary, the FIU School of Hospitality Management. Luciana Giangrandi, Boia De and Walrus Rodeo, Miami: Luciana, Co-Chef and Owner of Miami Michelin Award One Star restaurant Boia De and Chef/Partner in Walrus Rodeo, is a Miami native who earned her culinary stripes elsewhere before returning to the Magic City to open a restaurant in her hometown. Bringing her career full circle, Luciana returned to Miami with now husband Alex Meyer and together they opened La Pollita; a beloved Mexican food truck formerly stationed in Miami Midtown Garden Center before its final outpost in the Design District. In June 2019, the two closed up the taco shop and opened Boia De, a 24-seat restaurant and bar in a strip mall in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. From day one, Alex Meyer and Luciana Giangrandi set out to create a welcoming and inclusive environment; more than 50 percent of the restaurant staff identifies as female, 35% BIPOC, and top-level management is 70% female. Creating a safe, positive space has attracted talented minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ Community and allies of these communities. Luci works hard to create a positive environment based on respect where staff is encouraged to excel, share ideas and subsequently develop a sense of ownership in the restaurants. At the root of it all is passion; that is what is responsible for turning a 900-square-foot space with no storage, or room for a “real” kitchen into a Michelin-starred, nationally renowned restaurant. But it’s the passion for the team and their well-being that inspires everyone on staff to excel that translates into an incredible restaurant experience. Boia De has held its Michelin Star for two years now and has been a semi-finalist for a James Beard Award. Gina Genna, InterContinental Miami: A consummate hospitality professional with dedication to service and attention to detail as her north stars, Gina Genna is the marketing and communications powerhouse at the iconic InterContinental Miami Hotel. With the property for close to five years, her overarching goal as its Director of Marketing is to both further cement its well-earned reputation as a conference and business property but also as a premier destination for lifestyle travel. In short, helping redefine the hotel’s image as both a commercial, luxury and urban lifestyle resort. Her day to day revolves around building and executing the branding, communications and marketing for the hotel while overseeing Social Media, public relations, web, digital and reputation management channels. As she prepares for a new season and new opportunities at the hotel, she looks ahead to her 22nd Anniversary in the marketing and communications field. • From Battle Scarred To Rebuilt - Re’Im Base Sports Center Reopens As Part Of Its NIS 23 Million Restoration | sun-times

From Battle Scarred To Rebuilt - Re’Im Base Sports Center Reopens As Part Of Its NIS 23 Million Restoration Jewish Connection News Mar 17, 2026 The Sports Center And Gym At The Israel Defense Forces’ Re’im Base Reopened Tuesday As Part Of A Comprehensive NIS 23 Million Reconstruction Project Led By Friends Of The Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) And The Association For Israel’s Soldiers (AFIS) To Restore Facilities Destroyed During The October 7th, 2023, Terrorist Infiltration At The Gaza Division Headquarters Base. Supporters, soldiers and commanders gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, affixing of the mezuzah, unveiling of a commemorative plaque and an inaugural basketball game marking the return of the sports complex. The center’s initial construction was funded by donors from FIDF’s New York Tristate Area Real Estate Affinity Group, who following October 7th came together to spearhead its rebuilding. The restored facility includes a State-Of-The-Art fitness gym and indoor basketball arena with seating for spectators. Its reopening serves as the centerpiece of the broader NIS 23 million rehabilitation project to rebuild the base’s operational, social, welfare and religious Infrastructure on base. After terrorists infiltrated the base on October 7th, they chose the sports center as their own base of operation and fortified position for further attacks on the soldiers and their families on base. As IDF special forces closed in as they worked to liberate the base, the terrorists made the gym the site of their final stand. Opting to mitigate the risks to ground troops an airstrike was called in to eliminate the terrorists rendering the building completely destroyed. Overall, the attack left many of the base’s operational, social, welfare and religious centers unusable. In the months that followed, a large-scale rehabilitation effort was launched to restore the base to full operational capacity. Through funding from FIDF and in partnership with AFIS, damaged facilities across the base were rebuilt and restored. The project included rehabilitation of the synagogue, library, health clinic and other service structures. Crews completed extensive electrical, air conditioning and sealing work, as well as repainting, safety repairs and reconstruction of Infrastructure damaged during the attack. The sports center, which became one of the most visible symbols of the battle, was rebuilt from the ground up. The renovation also included refurbishment of the gym, soldiers’ club, memorial room and additional welfare facilities, aimed at providing Gaza Division soldiers with a fully equipped environment. “Rehabilitating Re’im base is a true mission, stemming from the inseparable bond between the Jewish community in the United States and IDF soldiers,” said Friends of the Israel Defense Forces CEO Major General (Res.) Nadav Padan. “Commitment is tested in times of emergency, and our support has grown stronger. It continues throughout the long process of rebuilding, recovery, and strengthening morale. The reconstruction of the sports center and other welfare facilities symbolizes the determination to restore routine, stability, and a place that enables soldiers to continue their mission with a sense of security and pride. We stand alongside the soldiers of the Gaza Division today and in the future, with full and ongoing commitment.” “The rehabilitation project at Re’im base is a moving expression of closing the circle,” said Association for Israel’s Soldiers CEO Colonel Reserve Shari Nechmias-Carmel. “The very buildings that were damaged in the fierce battles were originally built through donations from the Friends of the IDF in the United States, and now they are being restored and reopened thanks to the same spirit of partnership and giving. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to FIDF and to the many donors for their generous contribution and unwavering commitment to IDF soldiers. The completion of this rehabilitation project is not only the rebuilding of structures, but also symbolizes the end of a complex period and the beginning of a new path for the soldiers and commanders at Re’im base. It is an expression of life, spirit, and hope returning to the base, and of our commitment to providing those who serve there with a dignified environment that is strengthening and secure.” Co-Chair of the FIDF New York Tristate Real Estate Affinity Group Marty Berger, who participated in the ceremony and inaugural basketball game, reflected on the center’s restoration. “I remember when we first built this gym and facility and coming back over the years to see how much they meant to you. When we returned in December 2023, just two months after October 7th, we saw the damage and the bullet holes throughout the gym and fitness center. It was heartbreaking, but we also saw how the Gaza Division re-emerged ready to defend Israel with strength and determination and we vowed to rebuild it. To see this place rebuilt and to have played a small part in restoring it is deeply humbling,” Berger shared with soldiers and FIDF supporters in attendance. Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) is a 501(c)(3) Not-For-Profit Organization dedicated to honoring and supporting the brave men and women of the IDF who risk everything to protect the State of Israel and the Jewish people. While the mission of the IDF’s heroes is to look after Israel, defending its people, borders and freedom, FIDF’s mission is to look after them. FIDF provides life-changing support through education, financial aid, bereavement programs, Mental Health services and more, ensuring that every soldier, veteran and bereaved family knows they are not alone. Through global partnerships and unwavering commitment, FIDF stands as a pillar of strength for those who sacrifice so much in service to the Jewish homeland. • Rising Risk Factors - Heart Disease Remains Leading Cause Of Death | sun-times

Rising Risk Factors - Heart Disease Remains Leading Cause Of Death By Family Features Oct 16, 2025 While Medical Advances Have Helped People Live Longer With Cardiovascular Diseases, Many Of The Risk Factors That Lead To These Diseases Continue To Grow. Fueled by ongoing increases in High Blood Pressure, Obesity and other major risk factors, Heart Disease continues to kill more people in the U.S. than any other cause, according to the American Heart Association's 2025 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update. In fact, Cardiovascular Diseases including Heart Disease and Stroke claim more lives than all forms of Cancer and accidental deaths - the No. 2 and No. 3 causes of death - combined. According to the update, nearly 47% of U.S. adults have High Blood Pressure, more than 72% are at an unhealthy weight, nearly 42% are Obese and more than half have Type 2 Diabetes or Prediabetes. The annual report published in "Circulation," the peer-reviewed, flagship journal of the American Heart Association, shows the prevalence of Cardiovascular risk factors are projected to worsen over the coming decades. "Although we have made a lot of progress against Cardiovascular Disease in the past few decades, there is a lot more work that remains to be done," said Dhruv S. Kazi, M.D., M.Sc., M.S., FAHA, Head of Health Economics and Associate Director of the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Center for Outcomes Research in Cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. "If recent trends continue, Hypertension and Obesity will each affect more than 180 million U.S. adults by 2050, whereas the prevalence of Diabetes will climb to more than 80 million. Over the same time period, we expect to see a 300% increase in health care costs related to Cardiovascular Disease." Prevalence for major risk factors varies across sex and race: • Black women had the highest rate of Obesity at 57.9%, compared to the lowest rate of 14.5% among Asian women. • Hispanic men had the highest rate of diabetes at 14.5%, compared to the lowest rate of 7.7% among white women. • Black women had the highest rate of High Blood Pressure at 58.4%, compared to the lowest rate of 35.3% among Hispanic women. The prevalence of these risk factors - Obesity in particular - is growing among young people globally. As many as 40% of U.S. children have an unhealthy weight with 20% having Obesity. Nearly 60% of adults globally have an unhealthy weight. Long considered one of the leading preventable causes of death in the U.S. and worldwide, tobacco use is also trending down. Smoking rates have steadily declined among both adults and youth since the U.S. Surgeon General's first report on the dangers of smoking from 51% of men and 34% of women in 1965 to 15.6% and 12%, respectively, in 2018. • Meet Flat Fee Legal Service: Serving Victims of Property Damage at no Cost

Meet Flat Fee Legal Service: Serving Victims of Property Damage at no Cost By Austin Torres January 20, 2022 Share If you are the victim of property damage, whether it may be hurricane, flood, windstorm, water or fire-related, the associates at Flat Fee Legal Service will come to you, review your policy and your property damage to provide a free opinion on whether your property is covered and whether you have a valid insurance claim. During Hurricane season, it is especially important to know what your home insurance policy covers in the event that your home is damaged. Local property damage attorney, Jesse O’Hara and his stellar team of professionals at Flat Fee Legal Service are offering free insurance policy reviews and property inspections to ensure you and your family are protected this season. “We are offering free consultations with expert attorneys to review the insurance policies of clients and inform them of what type of coverage they have before the next storm hits us,” says O’Hara. O’Hara, who has handled thousands of property damage claims, has dedicated his legal career to taking on Florida’s insurance companies to ensure that property damage victims are paid what they are rightfully owed on their claims. In most cases, Flat Fee Legal Service provides legal services free of charge to homeowners - as opposed to most other law firms that charge their own clients. “We represent homeowners against their insurance companies in property damage disputes whenever their claims are denied or underpaid. We pay all the upfront costs and are only paid when the homeowner gets paid. The homeowner keeps their portion of the settlement proceeds and we are almost always compensated by the insurance companies, not the homeowner,” says O’Hara. If you are the victim of property damage, whether it may be hurricane, flood, windstorm, water or fire-related, the associates at Flat Fee Legal Service will come to you, review your policy and your property damage to provide a free opinion on whether your property is covered and whether you have a valid insurance claim. Quite often, when a homeowner is the victim of property damage such as a pipe leak, for example, they might hire a plumber and pay them an enormous fee to have it fixed and then submit the bill to their insurance company in hopes of being reimburs-ed. However, the professional team at Flat Fee Legal Service assists ho-meowners by working with companies that do not charge the homeowner. Instead, such companies do the work and negotiate directly with the insurance company for their payment. This is a way that we help homeowners fix their homes without going out of pocket or paying legal fees. These companies bill the insurance companies directly instead of taking up-front payment from homeowners. With a strong reputation in trial courts and long-standing relationships with insurance companies, O’Hara and his associates take great pride in assisting clients and ensuring they are paid fairly. Simply put, Flat Fee Legal Service keeps the roof over your head when insurance companies refuse to help. “It’s very rewarding when a court recognizes that your client is right and deserves to have their home fixed. The biggest satisfaction is when we settle their case and hand them their check - they are finally happy they can get their lives back on track. We get a thrill from winning substantial victories on behalf of our clients.” The team at Flat Fee Legal Service is highly engaged with their clients. They pride themselves in being easy to reach and communicate with throughout the entire claims process, which separates them from other larger, less personal firms. “What distinguishes us from a larger firm is that the clients have more one on one attention.” If you are a victim of property damage and are in need of assistance, you can rest assured knowing that the associates at Flat Fee Legal Service will go above and beyond to ensure you are properly compensated by assisting you from the very beginning of your claim all the way until your case is settled. Another aspect that underscores the uniqueness of the Flat Fee Legal Service team is their work culture and accommodating environment. Visitors of their office will note the modern art, highly relaxing, inviting and comforting layout of their office. The firm staff understand how stressful it is to battle your insurance company while your home is in a state of disrepair. By creating a different atmosphere that stands in stark contrast to typical law firms, they foster a welcoming space for visitors that is both brighter and more laid back. In doing this, Flat Fee Legal Service fosters an environment that is more welcoming than other law firms. This ensures that employees and clients alike can communicate and forge beneficial relationships in a healthy and happy space. O’Hara and his team of professionals understand that it is always possible to go above and beyond to assist their clients. Another way in which they hope to achieve this is by educating homeowners through the Florida Property Damage Podcast – a radio-style show that O’Hara hosts and is currently in development. With the goal of interviewing common players in the industry such as public adjusters, water mitigation companies, mold testing companies, attorneys and insurance adjusters, they hope to familiarize the general public with how the intricate insurance claims process really works. Licensed and recognized by Florida’s Supreme Court for his remarkable work in the community, O’Hara and his team hope to continue educating homeowners and helping them get paid money they are rightfully owed. Flat Fee Legal Service is located at 1700 East Las Olas Boulevard, Suite #102, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301. • Former Cashier Characterizes Love-Hate Relationship With Retail Work

Former Cashier Characterizes Love-Hate Relationship With Retail Work March 14, 2024 Share In Adam Kaat’s quirky two-part saga, Life on the Grocery Line and The Patron Saints of Grocery, he invites readers for a spin through the revolving door of retail employment, where colorful characters find themselves in absurd situations — some of which are laugh-out-loud funny. Kaat’s real-world, extraordinary experiences as a cashier in a high-end grocery store at the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic prompted him to write Life on the Grocery Line, a book that juxtaposes the global angst, paranoia and uncertainty of the time against a backdrop of darkly humorous, offbeat scenarios. His new book, The Patron Saints of Grocery, continues the story of protagonist Daniel, a relatable everyman who was plunged into an unprecedented reality. “Both books are meant to be humorous time capsules,” Kaat said. “Where you get a look behind the scenes at the lives of retail workers, both the good and the bad.” Although works of fiction, both books draw generously from Kaat’s own experiences and real-world interactions with customers and other employees. And both books offer eye-opening glimpses into the world of retail, where grizzled veterans butt heads with transient teenage employees, and where some of the country’s lowest paid workers are tasked every day with the immense burden of keeping their communities fed. In The Patron Saints of Grocery, Daniel is feeling the numbness stemming from an underappreciated life. New pressures from climbing the corporate ladder, protocols and regulations from the government, and the increasingly restless public all impose their wills on Daniel’s dreams. Working hard to climb the ranks feels meaningless without any recognition, and the slow grind of retail life begins to take its toll. Will he finally get the push he needs to prioritize a secret alternative life moonlighting as a panda for Social Media, or will he just fade away into the retail abyss? “It feels so good to round out the story — to tell the whole story I wanted to tell about that time in life,” Kaat added. “I think it’s going to be something that matters to a lot of people. I hope they laugh. I hope they cry.” About The Author: Author Adam Jonathan Kaat worked in a grocery store as a cashier and then as a prepared foods supervisor from January 2020 until May 2021. After college, he bounced around through the corporate world until leaving it all behind in the fall of 2019 to write his first novel. By January 2020, he had taken a job as a cashier to earn money while preserving Mental Energy for his creative pursuits. Once the COVID-19 Pandemic hit, everything changed, and he began to blog about his experiences. • A Second 'Home" For Senior Citizens: Memorial Program Gives Elderly a Place to Go and Reasons to Connect

A Second 'Home" For Senior Citizens: Memorial Program Gives Elderly a Place to Go and Reasons to Connect August 10, 2023 Share It’s easy to overlook the Boulevard Heights Community Center. It’s a nondescript building on a residential side street in a west Hollywood neighborhood, the kind of place that easily blends in with its surroundings. But, for Elizabeth Frantzen, it’s “home,” and what goes on inside its walls is critical to her health and well-being. The Hollywood senior citizen is part of Memorial Healthcare System’s A.L.L.I.E.S (Adults Live Life Independently, Educated, and Safe) program that meets each weekday at Boulevard Heights. She goes so far as to credit the people and services she receives with helping her out of a deep depression after her son’s accidental death. “Depression and loneliness are common feelings for our seniors,” said Tim Curtin, Executive Director for Community Services at Memorial Healthcare System. “We provide opportunities that get them out of their homes and into a place that exercises their brains, bodies, and spirit.” Curtin says Memorial knew seniors and their mental health were especially vulnerable during COVID-19, with some doing little more than watching TV during the pandemic. At that time, Memorial organized appropriately-distanced gatherings at T.Y. Park to provide a respite from the isolation most were feeling. The positive effect during a difficult time empowered Memorial to supercharge an existing seniors’ program to maximize its impact. Daily activities at the community center now include health-focused presentations, ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) classes, mental health services, exercise and fitness instruction, cognitive games, and arts & crafts opportunities. The healthcare system has partnered with Broward County Transit’s TOPS program to provide transportation and Meals on Wheels for daily lunches. On some days, as many as 100 seniors receive services and participate in activities. “This is a place they can go to see friends, learn new things, and get exercise they wouldn’t otherwise be interested in doing,” said Carmen Marin, a team leader at Memorial Healthcare System. “When they return home, they do with a smile on their face and happy that there was a purpose to their day.” The nonprofit Memorial Foundation, in collaboration with the Community Foundation of Broward County, has been underwriting the expenses of the A.L.L.I.E.S Program for more than five years. Funding from Memorial in the last year alone was more than $300,000 and includes the salaries of full-time employees, support staff, and supplies needed each day at the community center. “The feedback we’ve received from both the staff and participants makes it clear we’re changing lives. We’re thankful for our generous donors that enable us to fund this effort year after year,” said Kevin Janser, President of the Memorial Foundation. It’s an undertaking that continues to pay dividends for people like Nubia Martin, a senior that first connected with Memorial’s community services in 2014. “This program has made me much better mentally, healthy, and I love the community they’ve been able to put together,” she said. “It’s been a wonderful experience.” < Previous News Next News >
