The Fire Isn't Out Yet By Rabbi Moishe Kievman Chabad Chayil Jul 16, 2026 The Jewish People Have Endured Exile, Persecution, Expulsions And Countless Attempts To Erase Us. Yet We Are Still Here. Jews have built lives in America and throughout the free world, yet we have never stopped turning our hearts toward Israel and its eternal capital, Jerusalem. Not just in the past 3 years. And not just since 1948. But for the past 3,298 years, ever since Israel became the official homeland of the Jewish people. And even before that, for nearly 3,800, since G-d promised that land to Abraham… We pray facing Jerusalem. We end our weddings by breaking a glass in remembrance of the Temple. And we conclude every Passover Seder with the words "Next Year in Jerusalem." We never forgot. And because we never forgot, we never gave up hope. Legend has it that Napoleon, the great French leader, was once passing through a small town in Europe, when he heard weeping. Wanting to know what was going on, he followed the sound to inside a building, where he found men, women and children sitting on low chairs & benches, crying. The building was a synagogue and the room which had a magnificent candelabra chandelier at its center, had only a few candles lit. Bothered by the scene and wanting an explanation, Napoleon inquired about the reason for their sadness. They explained that they were mourning for the destruction of the temple. At that point Napoleon became very angered that people would have the audacity to harm the Temple of such good people, and inquired further to where the damage was, as whatever parts he saw still looked intact. No, they explained. "We're mourning for the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, the Beit Hamikdash, that was destroyed by Rome over 1,700 years ago. Once a year on Tisha B'Av - the 9th day on the Jewish month of Av, we get together to read the Book of Lamentations and mourn the Temple's destruction while praying that we very soon merit its rebuilding." To this Napoleon responded, "A people that remembers the destruction of their land and temple after so many hundreds of years, will surely witness its rebuilding." Tisha B'Av was actually the day that both Temples were destroyed. The First Temple built by King Solomon was destroyed by the Babylonians (modern day Iraq) in 3338 (423 BCE). After completing the building of the Second Temple in 3412 (349 BCE), it too was destroyed on the 9th of Av, this time by the Romans in 3829 (69 CE). That was also the day on which the Jews were expelled from Spain in 5252 (1492 CE), the start of World War I in 5674 (1914 CE) and the Gush Katif expulsion in 5765 (2005 CE). If you were to witness any such atrocity, how would you respond? What would you say? What would you do? The Talmud tells us that although the Babylonians & Romans did the dirty work, it was actually the will of G-d, due to the people not behaving in a loving way one to another. Furthermore the Talmud tells us that as long as the Temple is not rebuilt in our time, it's as if it was destroyed in our time! In other words, since we still don't have the Temple rebuilt, it's as if it is being destroyed in front of our very eyes! We are witnesses to those horrific atrocities! Help! The fire isn't out yet!! The good news is that we know what to do to put the fire out. By acting in kind ways to one another, by loving thy neighbor, by simply being good people, we will surely see the Third Temple built in a peaceful Jerusalem. Ah! If we would only merit to enjoy it, this year in Jerusalem! To learn more about Tisha B'Av, see: www.ChabadChayil.org/TishaBAv This year Tisha B'Av begins Wednesday night, July 22nd, 2026 at sundown and ends Thursday night, July 23rd, 2026 at nightfall. - Despotism Is the New Normal: Looming Threats to Freedom in 2022
Despotism Is the New Normal: Looming Threats to Freedom in 2022 By John W. Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead January 13, 2022 Share Despotism has become our new normal. (des·pot·ism - noun - the exercise of absolute power, especially in a cruel and oppressive way) Digital tyranny, surveillance. Intolerance, cancel culture, censorship. Lockdowns, mandates, government overreach. Supply chain shortages, inflation. Police brutality, home invasions, martial law. The loss of bodily integrity, privacy, autonomy. These acts of tyranny by an authoritarian government have long since ceased to alarm or unnerve us. We have become desensitized to government brutality, accustomed to government corruption, and unfazed by the government’s assaults on our freedoms. This present trajectory is unsustainable. The center cannot hold. The following danger points pose some of the greatest threats to our collective and individual freedoms now and in the year to come. Censorship. The most controversial issues of our day - gay rights, abortion, race, religion, sexuality, political correctness, police brutality, et al. - have become battlegrounds for those who claim to believe in freedom of speech but only when it favors the views and positions they support. Thus, while on paper, we are technically free to speak, in reality, we are only as free to speak as the government and tech giants such as Facebook, Google or YouTube may allow. Yet it’s a slippery slope from censoring so-called illegitimate ideas to silencing truth. The Emergency State. Now that the government has gotten a taste for flexing its police state powers by way of a bevy of lockdowns, mandates, restrictions, contact tracing programs, heightened surveillance, censorship, overcriminalization, etc., “we the people” may well find ourselves burdened with a Nanny State inclined to use its draconian pandemic powers to protect us from ourselves. This is the power grab hiding in plain sight. Pre-crime. The government is about to rapidly expand its policing efforts to focus on pre-crime and thought crimes. Precrime aims to prevent crimes before they happen by combining widespread surveillance, behavior prediction technologies, data mining, precognitive technology, and neighborhood and family snitch programs to enable police to capture would-be criminals before they can do any damage. The intent is for the government to be all-seeing, all-knowing and all-powerful in its preemptive efforts to combat domestic extremism, a broad label that can be applied to anything or anyone the government perceives to be a threat to its power. The Surveillance State. This all-seeing fourth branch of government, comprised of a domestic army of government snitches, spies and techno-warriors, watches everything we do, reads everything we write, listens to everything we say, and monitors everywhere we go. Beware of what you say, what you read, what you write, where you go, and with whom you communicate, because it is all being recorded, stored, and catalogued, and will be used against you eventually, at a time and place of the government’s choosing. Genetic privacy. “Guilt by association” has taken on new connotations in the technological age. Yet the debate over genetic privacy - and when one’s DNA becomes a public commodity outside the protection of the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition on warrantless searches and seizures - is really only beginning. Get ready, folks, because the government has embarked on a diabolical campaign to create a nation of suspects predicated on a massive national DNA database. Bodily integrity. The debate over bodily integrity covers broad territory, ranging from abortion and forced vaccines to biometric surveillance and basic healthcare. Forced vaccinations, forced cavity searches, forced colonoscopies, forced blood draws, forced breath-alcohol tests, forced DNA extractions, forced eye scans, and forced inclusion in biometric databases are just a few ways in which Americans continue to be reminded that we have no control over what happens to our bodies during an encounter with government officials. Gun control. After declaring more than a decade ago that citizens have a Second Amendment right to own a gun in one’s home for self-defense, the Supreme Court has now been tasked with deciding whether the Constitution also protects the right to carry a gun outside the home. Indeed, while it still technically remains legal to own a firearm in America, possessing one can now get you pulled over, searched, arrested, subjected to all manner of surveillance, treated as a suspect without ever having committed a crime, shot at, and killed. Show Your Papers Society. By allowing government agents to establish a litmus test for individuals to be able to engage in commerce, movement and any other right that corresponds to life in a supposedly free society, it lays the groundwork for a “show me your papers” society in which you are required to identify yourself at any time to any government worker who demands it for any reason. Singularity. The digital universe - the metaverse - is expected to be the next step in our evolutionary transformation from a human-driven society to a technological one. Remaining singularly human and retaining your individuality and dominion over yourself - mind, body and soul - in the face of corporate and government technologies that aim to invade, intrude, monitor, manipulate and control us may be one of the greatest challenges before us. Despotism. The gravest threat facing us as a nation may well be despotism, exercised by a ruling class whose only allegiance is to power and money. The American kakistocracy continues to suck the American people into a parallel universe in which the Constitution is meaningless, the government is all-powerful, and the citizenry are powerless to defend themselves against government agents who steal, spy, lie, plunder, kill, abuse and generally inflict mayhem and sow madness on everyone and everything in their sphere. It is a grim outlook for a new year, but it is not completely hopeless. If hope is to be found, it will be found with those of us who do their part, at their local levels, to right the wrongs and fix what is broken. I am referring to the builders, the thinkers, the helpers, the healers, the educators, the creators, the artists, the activists, the technicians, the food gatherers and distributors, and every other person who does their part to build up rather than destroy. “We the people” are the hope for a better year. Until we can own that truth, until we can forge our own path back to a world in which freedom means something again, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we’re going to be stuck in this wormhole of populist anger, petty politics and destruction that is pitting us one against the other. In such a scenario, no one wins. - Breaking Barriers: The Remarkable Journey Of College Prep Jewish Academy (CPJA) Middle School Students
Breaking Barriers: The Remarkable Journey Of College Prep Jewish Academy (CPJA) Middle School Students April 17, 2024 Share On Wednesday, April 3rd, at the G7 Rooftop in Hollywood, an extraordinary event left attendees awestruck with its panoramic views of the Guitar Hotel. As the sun set over Hollywood, guests were treated to a visual spectacle that perfectly complemented the event's ambiance. The memorable evening featured renowned Israeli musician Gad Elbaz, alongside event hosts, Real Estate Moguls Sharon & Miriam Sharaby. Other prominent guests included Tamara James, former Mayor of Dania Beach, Adam Gruber, Commissioner of Hollywood, Lior Ofir, COO of the Jewish Federation of Broward County, Melissa Glaser, Director of Teach Florida. Special messages were shared by Mayor of Hollywood, Josh Levy, community Rabbis, and pop star Nissim Black among other distinguished guests. What were these individuals celebrating? An achievement that has never been seen in the history of Florida. In the heart of Hollywood, Florida, amidst a diverse community of immigrants and working-class families, lies College Prep Jewish Academy—a beacon of hope and opportunity for its students. Against all odds, the Middle School students at College Prep achieved something truly extraordinary, rewriting the narrative of what's possible for young learners. All students in the 8th Grade Honors class at College Prep passed the PERT college entrance exam and are now taking college classes for college credit. That was not a typo, 8th graders taking college courses! This evening celebrated the triumph of hope, hard work, and determination! The passing of the PERT exam by the entire 8th-grade class at College Prep is a testament to students’ academic prowess and determination. Head of School, Rabbi Chaim Albert compared this achievement to the story of Rabbi Akiva, the great Jewish sage who only began learning Torah later in life yet achieved greatness through determination and humility. The PERT (Postsecondary Education Readiness Test) exam serves as a crucial milestone for students aspiring to pursue higher education, assessing their readiness for college-level coursework. Passing the dual enrollment exam was once believed to be reserved for elite upperclassmen, in 10th and 11th grade. College Prep has shattered all preconceived notions by preparing their middle school students to pass this challenging exam. These 8th grade students in College Prep are now on their way to complete over 2 years of college credits while still in high school. This incredible feat will help these students as they attempt to apply for college in the future but will also save families/students thousands of dollars in the high sticker cost of college. By gaining early exposure to college-level coursework, these students are not only preparing for their future but also gaining a competitive edge in higher education and beyond. What’s the secret sauce of College Prep? Instead of waiting until students reach high school, College Prep starts laying the foundation for college readiness in middle school. College Prep’s motto is “College Starts Day 1.” Central to the success of College Prep is its exceptional staff, composed of highly qualified educators dedicated to nurturing the potential of every student. A staggering 100% of College Prep staff hold Masters Degrees, a testament to their commitment to continuous learning and professional growth. At the helm of this dedicated team is the Chief Academic Officer, a Harvard graduate whose leadership and vision have propelled College Prep to new heights of excellence. Leading College Prep's success story are two remarkable individuals—Yaisa Rodriguez and Marie Yoda, the Directors of College Prep and Honors Tracks. With a keen understanding of the unique challenges faced by 8th-grade students, Rodriguez and Yoda have devised a winning formula for preparing them for college success. Their innovative approach combines rigorous academics, personalized support, and a nurturing learning environment, empowering students to exceed expectations and reach their full potential. College Prep also provides learning tracks to meet the multiplicity of interests of students. These tracks empower students to take ownership of their education, pursue their passions, and cultivate the skills and experiences necessary to thrive in college and beyond. Whether students choose the Honors Track, College Prep Track, or Jewish Business Academy Track, they are equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and resilience to succeed in their academic and professional pursuits. Gad Elbaz beautifully summarized the evening by delivering an inspiring speech highlighting the crucial mission of bringing students out of public schools and into College Prep. Money must never stand in the way of a Jewish child claiming his rightful Jewish education. His words resonated deeply with the audience, underscoring the importance of education and the power of community support in shaping the future generation. The story of College Prep demonstrates the Jewish belief that greatness may be achieved through humility and hard work. May this evening bring inspiration and hope to the Jewish future! - Lila Bobick: The Realtor in Love with Buildings
Lila Bobick: The Realtor in Love with Buildings By Felipe Castilla December 30, 2021 Share Ross Lila Bobick has always loved buildings. She became enamored by their golden doors, elevators and the verandas. It is her eternal love affair. “I remember going to the magnificent buildings in old downtown Bogota accompanying my father to the bank,” Miss Bobick said. “I could never forget that building and when I visited New York City for the first time, it struck me. The resemblance was incredible.” Now she does real estate for a living and she is among the best. She has emerged as one of the most professional, dedicated and educated Estate Agents (they are called like that in London were she learned English) providing clients with an unrivaled amount of knowledge and expertise in the area of both real-estate and law's backround. What is unique about Miss Bobick is that she actually began her career as a Lawyer in Colombia. Having studied law in Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, one of the most prestigious schools in the country (where the majority of the Presidents of Colombia studied), she quickly rose through the ranks and graduated among the top of her class and receiving nominations for the most desired distinctions from her university, one of which was the Colegial Nomination for Excellence. She worked in major insurance companies in Colombia but mostly multinational firms like AIG from the United States, Allianz AGF from France, Diners Club among others. However, she soon had to flee Colombia to the United States due to the incredible amount of violence in the early 1990’s after the killing of her brother León in 1989 and was forced to begin her new life in a new country. Where others might have been overcome with fear, Miss Bobick saw this as an opportunity. "If there is something, I had never lacked, is courage and character" she said, "because don’t forget ones character is ones destiny." “I quickly discovered a niche that I realized was, is and will always be one of the most important activities with regards to any economy and also an activity that embodies everybody's American dream,“ Miss Bobick said. “That is the acquiring of a home.” She studied English in Brighton, England a small town only 45 minutes away from London. She then took her first steps as a realtor when she began working for a Jewish gentleman from the Bronx named Harry Ruocco as a receptionist. “I had all kind of challenges, British English and American English are very different” MIss Bobick said. “I didn’t get what people were saying over the phone, some days I wanted to scream.” Again she advanced in her position from within the company eventually getting offered to assist Carol Kagno (from Boston), one of the major realtors in the company at that time. Here again she demonstrated a remarkable capacity for Real Estate negotiating and a keen eye for property value. With Kagno as her mentor she was able to successfully come into her own as a realtor working in Hallan-dale Beach and Sunny Isles principally. After gaining experience at Hallan-dale Beach (Beach Club, La Mer, Parker Dorado, Parker Plaza), she set her sights for Aventura where she established herself as a resident in Williams Islands 4000 Building and became an expert realtor in the area. In fact, it is her residency in Aventura that gives her an intimate and detailed understanding of the properties in the area as well. “Currently, I have among others, a beautiful Penthouse for sale at Turnberry Village South for only $724,900,” Miss Bobick said. “Once you’re in a building you know the details and intricacies of that building,” MIss Bobick said. I’ll know how it works, what it needs, what it’s missing, what’s good and what’s bad, where it’s good to buy and where it’s good to sell too.” And it is this very acute familiarity with the buildings throughout Aventura that make Miss Bobick so incredibly popular with her clients. She moved to Hallandale Beach which she sees as the most promissory area. She was the first agent to sell at the high-end new Oasis location at 1100 East Hallandale Beach Blvd. where the retail stores go for around 1 million dollars. “I went and knocked on their doors and told them I had Colombian investors with cash,”she laughs. In this way, Miss Bobick is able to intelligently maneuver through various areas to find clients the best possible deal on a property without any hassle, delay or mistakes. She is the cosmopolitan realtor, very well-traveled and has been to Greece, Turkey, Italy, Switzer-land, Central / South America and lived in the UK. “ I have been to the Amazonas and I have a picture with Al-Capone’s car,” she said. “Can you believe it? My late husband’s best friend (a Holocaust survivor) was a car collector.” MIss Bobick currently works as both a residential and commercial realtor at Beachfront Realty Inc. in Aventura and services clients in the Turnberry area. Her clients, however, are as specialized as her knowledge. The majority of her customers are from the Jewish community in both New York and in Florida. However, she also has many South American clients looking to invest in South Florida properties. If that was not enough, she also provides business start-up services, opening off shore corporations and ship registrations for her clients overseas (non American). She has her own firm called Rightdocs LLC. Although MIss Bobick’s unique background and knowledge are truly special, one of the main reasons clients trust her most is due to her impeccable record. Unlike some other professionals out there, Miss Bobick has never had complaints for fraud, misled, or disappointed a client because she says at the end the only thing a person has is her or his name. Her law background and unwavering dedication to the client truly sets her apart from other REALTORS. “The way I interact with my client's, I’m always considering what’s best for them, even when there’s not the most monetary benefit for me,” MIss Bobick said. “Because I’m looking to truly build long-term relationships with everyone I work with. I want my clients to come to me for help and I want their kids to come years later. That’s what I’m interested in.” “I had fond memories of my client's weddings at Deal New Jersey at the Megan David,” she said. laughing “Don't you think the word ‘deal’ is a good omen?” In one sentence she is highly educated, witty and trustworthy. She is currently seeking a post graduate law degree at St. Thomas University.
