  • 10 Often Overlooked Ways To Support An Autistic Child’s Wellbeing | sun-times

10 Often Overlooked Ways To Support An Autistic Child’s Wellbeing South Florida Sun Times May 29, 2025 During May We Have Been Recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month, Which Is Dedicated To Promoting The Mental Wellbeing For All And Challenging Stigmas. For Parents And Caregivers Of Autistic Children, This Month Offers A Meaningful Opportunity To Reflect On How To Best Support Their Child’s Psychological And Emotional Health. While Autism Is A Spectrum And Every Individual’s Journey Is Unique, One Thing Is Constant: Every Autistic Child Deserves The Opportunity To Thrive And Lead A Fulfilling, Joyful Life. If you are wondering how to better support an Autistic child’s mental wellbeing, there is no need to get lost in endless internet searches. As the Director of Operations at Above and Beyond Therapy, where they provide personalized ABA therapy, they have seen firsthand a number of often overlooked strategies that can make a real difference. Here are 10 valuable tips to keep in mind: Validate Their Experience Without Trying to “Fix” It Autistic children may feel overwhelmed in social situations, especially when routines change or when they feel misunderstood or excluded. These experiences can cause stress and anxiety and lower their overall mental wellbeing, so it’s paramount to help them recognize and navigate those feelings. Rather than rushing to offer solutions, focus on listening to the child with empathy and understanding. Reassure them that it is completely okay to feel overwhelmed or different, and that seeking out support and taking a break is healthy and encouraged. Providing validation and listening without immediately offering solutions builds trust, emotional safety, and self-awareness, all of which are key to building resilience. Use Mental Health Language They Can Understand Autistic children may process language and communication differently, so clarity and simplicity are essential when discussing mental health. Avoid abstract language, metaphors, or complex sentences. Instead, use clear and concrete words that directly reflect the message you are trying to convey. Since many Autistic children interpret language literally, it is helpful to break down concepts like “anxiety” or “stress” into relatable examples. For example, describe how their body may feel in certain situations. Visual supports like emotions charts can also help make these ideas more tangible and help them better understand and express their emotional experiences. Build Downtime Into the Day Autistic children may experience sensory overload or fatigue from structured activities and social demands. To support their wellbeing, it is important to intentionally include breaks throughout the day that offer time for rest and regulation. Intentionally schedule quiet, unstructured breaks to help them recharge. Scheduled breaks allow your child to recharge, calm their minds, regulate emotions, and prevent burnout. Respect Stimming as a Coping Tool Short for self-stimulatory behavior, stimming refers to repetitive movements or sounds like rocking, hand-flapping, pacing, or spinning objects. For many autistic individuals, stimming is a natural and effective way to manage emotions, process sensory input, and navigate overwhelming situations. As long as the behavior isn’t harmful, there is no need to stop it. In fact, trying to suppress stimming can lead to increased anxiety, distress, or frustration. Rather than discouraging it, recognize stimming as a valuable form of self-regulation and a part of how your child communicates and copes. Demonstrating acceptance of stimming helps foster emotional safety and reinforces that your child is supported just as they are. Model Asking for Help Learning to manage and regulate strong emotions can be especially challenging for autistic children, as they may not always know how or when to seek support. One of the most effective ways to teach this skill is by modeling it yourself. Demonstrate what it looks like to ask for help when you’re feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or unsure. For example, you can use clear and simple language like “I’m not sure what to do, so I think I’ll ask someone for help.” This shows your child that reaching out is not only okay, but also it is a healthy and normal part of emotional self-care. Over time, the child will be more likely to mirror this behavior. Incorporate Nature and Outdoor Time Spending time in nature can have a calming and restorative effect on children, including those on the Autism Spectrum. Outdoor environments offer a break from overstimulating settings and help reduce stress, promote emotional regulation, and foster a sense of wellbeing. Even short periods in nature, such as a daily walk or time in a park, can make a big difference in an Autistic child’s life. Not only does nature encourage sensory exploration in a gentle and engaging way, but also it supports the development of motor skills like coordination, balance, and agility. Regular outdoor play can also enhance language development and social interaction. Create opportunities for unstructured time in nature to support both mental and physical wellbeing in an inclusive, low-pressure environment. Avoid Over-Therapizing Early diagnosis, timely intervention, and ABA therapy can play a vital role in supporting the development of Autistic children. However, it is equally important to recognize that over-scheduling a child with back-to-back therapies isn’t always better. This can lead to sensory and emotional overload, fatigue, and even burnout for both the child and their family. While therapeutic support is paramount, so is preserving time for rest, unstructured play, and meaningful family interactions. Kids need space to explore, relax, and simply be themselves. Striking a healthy balance between therapy and everyday life will support emotional wellbeing and help ensure that interventions are effective, sustainable, and respectful of the child’s pace and needs. Celebrate Neurodiversity Always talk about autism in a respectful, affirming, and positive way to help nurture self-acceptance and pride in an Autistic child’s identity. Embracing neurodiversity means recognizing that neurological differences like Autism are natural variations of the human experience not a “problem” that needs to be “fixed.” Autistic children bring their own unique strengths, insights, and ways of interacting with the world. When we highlight and celebrate these differences, we help foster a strong sense of self-worth, belonging, and confidence. Encouraging inclusive environments that value neurodiverse perspectives not only empowers Autistic individuals, but also it enriches the broader community by promoting acceptance, understanding, and mutual respect. Be Mindful of Your Own Emotional Tone Autistic children are often highly attuned to the emotional energy around them and may be especially sensitive to the tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language. Even subtle shifts in mood or stress can affect how safe and supported they feel. Therefore, maintaining a calm and steady presence (even in challenging situations) can help create a sense of emotional security. Always try to speak in a gentle, reassuring tone and be mindful that your nonverbal cues (gestures, facial expressions, etc.) match your words. Consistently using positive language and offering specific praise for helpful behaviors can reinforce emotional safety and build confidence. Your emotional regulation can model healthy coping strategies and set the tone for a more supportive environment. Introduce Journaling or Expression Through Art Creative expression through journaling, drawing, painting, music, etc. can be a powerful outlet for Autistic children to process and communicate their emotions. Since art does not rely on spoken language, it offers a safe and accessible way for Autistic kids to express thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to verbalize. Visual journaling in particular allows children to explore their inner world using colors, shapes, and imagery. Whether it’s through sketching, sculpting out of clay, or creating a storybook, these artistic forms of expression can promote emotional regulation, build self-awareness, and foster a sense of accomplishment. Providing a variety of creative tools and encouraging self-expression without any judgment supports their mental wellness and confidence. Final Thoughts One of the most meaningful ways to support an Autistic child is to seek a deeper understanding of Autism itself. Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that exists on a spectrum, meaning that each Autistic child’s experience is unique. With the right support, especially when provided early, Autistic kids can develop important skills, navigate challenges, and lead rich and fulfilling lives. Following the strategies outlined above can help support an Autistic child’s mental wellbeing as this May is Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond. • Pressuring Ally Israel To Implement Never-Agreed-To 15-Point Gaza “Roadmap” And To Prematurely Cease Necessary Operations Against Muslim Terrorist Hamas Won’t Bring Peace | sun-times

Pressuring Ally Israel To Implement Never-Agreed-To 15-Point Gaza “Roadmap” And To Prematurely Cease Necessary Operations Against Muslim Terrorist Hamas Won’t Bring Peace Jewish Connection News Sep 10, 2026 Zionist Organization Of America (ZOA) National President Morton A. Klein Released The Following Statement: Yesterday, while Muslim Hamas continues operations in Gaza, eight Arab nations (Saudi Arabia, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey, Qatar and the UAE) posted an outrageous, despicable statement calling for a Palestinian (terror) state on suicidal pre-1967 lines and accusing Israel of “direct and full responsibility for any consequences resulting from its continued rejection, obstruction, delay or non-compliance” with the so-called Board of Peace’s(BoP) 15-point “roadmap.” As ZOA previously explained, the “roadmap” rewrites, reverses and contorts the already insufficient requirements of President Trump’s 20-point plan. The roadmap that the BoP (including Hamas supporters Qatar and Turkey) is attempting to impose turns the requirement that Hamas must totally demilitarize into a fictitious process that allows Hamas to keep “personal” arms; allows Hamas to conveniently store, not destroy, its heavy arms from where they can be easily retrieved; eliminates the requirement to deradicalize Hamas; eliminates the security perimeter essential for Israeli civilians’ safety; deletes humanitarian emigration for Gazans; adds a new requirement to clearly commit to creating a Palestinian (terror) state; and unilaterally ties Israel’s hands by calling for Israel to “completely, without delay” cease military operations – without such a “without delay” requirement on Hamas and other Gazan terror groups. (See “New 15-Point Plan Rewrites Trump’s Already Concerning October 2025 20-Point Plan to Further Endanger Israel and to Assist Hamas and Other Palestinian Terror Groups,” by Morton Klein, Jerusalem Post, August 5th, 2026.) Not surprisingly, Israel and its Cabinet never agreed to the BoP’s disastrous “roadmap.” As ZOA explained regarding the Iran-U.S. MOU’s attempt to restrict Israel’s actions against Lebanon without Israel’s consent, one of the most fundamental principles of international law is that documents cannot impose obligations on a state that has not consented to be bound. Moreover, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu rightfully rejected the “roadmap,” saying that “the IDF will not carry out any withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed. It needs to be genuine disarmament, not fictitious disarmament. When I say Hamas is disarmed, that means the heavy weapons, the less heavy weapons, all the weapons.” The eight Arab nations’ vicious statement is unconscionable. Particularly when, during the past week, there were more than 65 incidents of Hamas infiltrating into the yellow zone in Gaza, including an incident in which Hamas stole Israeli engineering equipment, and the IDF opened fire in none of these serious cases. ZOA also is deeply concerned that, at a meeting yesterday in Cairo (which included Muslim Hamas-supporting BoP members Muslim Qatar and Muslim Turkey, and unfriendly-to-Israel senior envoys Nickolay Mladenov and Tony Blair), Jared Kushner reportedly “sought to reassure [Hamas leader Khalil al-] Hayya that the US-controlled Board of Peace would press Israel to stop strikes in Gaza and gradually withdraw from the Strip once Hamas begins turning over its weapons.” In addition, President Trump reportedly told Fox News’ Trey Yingst during a phone interview that Israel shouldn’t be striking Hamas, because “ultimately, they [Hamas] are giving up their guns.” ZOA appreciates Kushner’s efforts to pressure the murderous Nazi-like Islamic Terrorist group Hamas to disarm. However, pressuring Israel to cease needed strikes on Hamas Terrorists who continue to attack Israelis, or pressuring Israel to prematurely withdraw from its current security zones in Gaza prior to Hamas’ complete disarmament, deradicalization and cessation of operations, is a recipe for disaster and will not bring peace. • Melissa Errico Crowns The Season: Aventura Broadway Concert Series Finale

Melissa Errico Crowns The Season: Aventura Broadway Concert Series Finale March 7, 2024 Share The City of Aventura presents the finale to the Aventura Broadway Concert Series as Broadway, TV and Film Star Melissa Errico performs The Life & Loves of a Broadway Baby this Sunday, March 10th at 7:00 p.m. During this incredible show, Errico sets her own life to the Broadway songs that she has sung and offers both a sensational set of beloved standards and a series of witty and sometimes wicked stories about an ingenue's life on the Great White Way. This show is a sexy, sublime study of American songs from Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Lerner & Loewe, Taylor Swift and more. Her Life As a Musical Theater Actress, Errico is a Tony Award-Nominated Broadway star — an Actress, Singer and Author who contributes regularly to The New York Times. In summer 2023, she sang a concert in Paris which was broadcast internationally and nationally on Radio France, followed by a sold-out cabaret at the historic Le Bal Blomet. Also last summer, she opened for music icon George Benson at the Montreal Jazz Festival. A knocked-out writer from London Jazz News wrote of Montreal: “Errico was energized, making sure with every breath that she would get the audience in the 3,000-seater Pelletier really on her side. Every high note was heroically held, and she got a standing ovation from this audience. Montreal audiences always want to show their warmth and this one made her deservedly welcome.” In November of 2022, she made her Carnegie Hall debut in the concert Broadway Blockbusters with The New York Pops, where her performance included three Sondheim numbers including: “Losing My Mind,” and “Move On.” As she entered to begin with a song from “My Fair Lady,” Steven Reineke, Principal Conductor of New York Pops, introduced her with flair: “Melissa Errico is a unique force in the musical life of New York City: a Broadway star, a concert artist and an author who regularly contributes essays to The New York Times. There’s really no one like her!” First known for her starring roles on Broadway, including My Fair Lady, High Society, Anna Karenina, White Christmas, Dracula, and Les Misérables, Melissa has had a wide ranging career from television and film to recording. She starred in the CBS show “Central Park West,” and played roles on “Blue Bloods,” “The Knick,” and more, as well as “Billions” on Showtime. She has starred in many non-musical roles by Shaw and Oscar Wilde, including “Dear Liar” in the spring of 2023, playing George Bernard Shaw’s original Eliza Doolittle. Though a constant in the New York theater, she has become equally known for her music and concert work worldwide. Her 2018 album, Sondheim Sublime, called by The Wall Street Journal “The best all-Sondheim album ever recorded,” led to sold-out concerts dates from Ravinia to Caramoor and Wolftrap — San Francisco to Singapore to London, and including the 92 Street Y, Joe’s Pub, Town Hall, and Lincoln Center’s Allen Room. Errico’s history with Sondheim began when he selected her to star as Dot in Sunday In The Park With George at The Kennedy Center, then as Clara in Passion at Classic Stage Company; then in the New York City Center Encores! production of Do I Hear A Waltz? In 2020, she sang “Children And Art” in the Sondheim 90th Birthday Concert “Take Me To The World,” and was featured on PBS Television in a documentary special in which she sang “Finishing The Hat” and joined Adam Gopnik and Raul Esparza on Poetry in America. She was also featured in The New York Times Tribute to Sondheim in November 2021 as the top ten interpreter of his work. Her second Sondheim album, “Sondheim In The City” was released on February 16th, 2024. In addition to Sondheim, nothing in her work has been more constant than her association with Composer Michel Legrand. Having starred in his sole Broadway show, Amour, she went on to collaborate with him on the iconic album Legrand Affair. After his death in 2019, she was asked to write his eulogy by The New York Times and was then invited to be the sole American performer in the extraordinary two-day memorial to Legrand held in April, 2019 at Paris’ Le Grand Rex Theatre. • A History Maker: Mayor Larisa Svechin Of Sunny Isles Beach

A History Maker: Mayor Larisa Svechin Of Sunny Isles Beach December 28, 2023 Share It's been a little over a year since Mayor Svechin was elected Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach on December 6th, 2022. She made history as the first Woman Mayor in Sunny Isles Beach, first Duly Elected Belorussian-Born Mayor in the U.S. and first Russian Speaking Mayor in the U.S. As a Jewish Immigrant from the Former USSR, her family suffered greatly during Communism, WWI and WWII, losing family to Famine, Deportations to Siberia, and her grandfather and uncle dying in action. The Mayor’s mother was born in a Prison Camp and her father hid from the Nazis together with his four siblings, while his two eldest brothers were at the front. During this time, her grandmother and great aunt risked their lives to bake and deliver Matzah on Passover for the Soviet Jewish Soldiers. Despite both grandmothers not being able to read or write, and one being left a widow, both of the Mayor’s parents and all of their siblings managed to finish school. In 1979 during the second wave of Immigration from the Soviet Union, Mayor Svechin’s parents and sisters arrived at a Religious Asylum in Miami Beach. Mayor Svechin grew up in what is now Sunny Isles Beach, attended Highland Oaks Junior High School and graduated from North Miami Beach Senior High School. Upon graduation she moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute Of Technology, studying: Painting, Drawing and Toy Design. She went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree Of Science with a concentration in Philosophy and Ethics from the New School University in New York City. Upon graduation Mayor Svechin remained in New York City, first Managing Restaurants in Greenwich Village, and then deciding on a Career in Advertising. It was during this time that she quickly rose the ranks to become Senior Vice President Director Of Print, Managing over $300M in Advertising Spending, of what is today one of the three leading global advertising companies. This is when she learned Critical Negotiating Skills, Budgeting Million-Dollar Contracts and mastering managing a large staff across five offices in the U.S. and in Canada. At the turn of the century, Mayor Svechin met her husband and started a family, settling in Tribeca, New York City. As her family grew and her parents in Sunny Isles Beach aged, the Mayor and her husband decided to move back to Sunny Isles Beach permanently in 2009. With the birth of their fourth child, the Mayor and her husband became increasingly more involved in the community. Mayor Svechin joined the boards of: The Sunny Isles Beach PTSA, Friends Of Oleta Park, Citizen’s Coalition For Public Education, Critical Supports For Holocaust Survivors, multiple state legislative committees, Human Trafficking Task Force, EESAC and also launched the Sunny Isles Beach Women’s Club. This was the beginning of her commitment to serve the City of Sunny Isles Beach. Mayor Svechin is the Vice President of YG Institute, a NonProfit Think Tank and Legislative Policy Organization whose mission is to assist families, children and those reentering society to be contributing members of society. This passion and dedication to serve led to the Mayor earning a Master’s Degree from Harvard University in Government Extension Studies in 2022, as well as a certificate from Harvard University in Philosophy and Ethics in 2020. She was first elected as a Commissioner in 2016, then appointed to Vice Mayor in 2018, and Re-Elected in 2020 before taking over as Mayor in 2021 prior to the Special Election. Mayor Svechin was elected Mayor in December 2022 and is overjoyed to work with the Commission. She is excited to complete her vision centered around listening, advocating and executing for the residents, visitors and friends of Sunny Isles Beach. Mayor Svechin has an Open-Door Policy as she is dedicated to accessibility and transparency. < Previous News Next News >
