  • Locally-owned pest control company combines technology and unparalleled customer service to tackle the most annoying pest problems

Locally-owned pest control company combines technology and unparalleled customer service to tackle the most annoying pest problems July 28, 2021 Share While most of us grill burgers, sip boat drinks by the pool, and twist umbrellas into the sand, two Hollywood profes-sionals are turning their attention to tackling your rodent and pest control issues with child and pet-safe, eco-friendly products, the latest technology, and 24-hour customer service to suit anyone’s needs. With more than 35 years of pest control experience, Kevin Biederman has been taking care of Hollywood’s families and businesses with prompt service, attention to detail, and thorough follow-up. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because these same qualities are present in his role as Commissioner, where he has proudly served the citizens of Hollywood since 2012, focused on listening to the needs of residents and finding innovative solutions to community issues. “I have lived in Hollywood for more than 35 years,” explains Kevin. “I and my family have grown within this community. I am thankful that I have been able to create a business here, and I know that, with continued commitment to our clients and a growing focus on technology and easier access to solutions, our services will always be valued within Hollywood and throughout South Florida.” Seeing the need to create a better customer-focused service platform using innovative technology and modern applications, Kevin sought out the help of Moe Meyer. A fellow volunteer and colleague in the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Moe was a wizard with technology and software development, having spent nearly ten years working with Apple. He brought industry knowledge and a modern approach to customer care that revolutionized how the business responds to customer needs. “So many small businesses rely on outdated record-keeping and billing that they often get bogged down in paperwork, forgetting why they got into the business to begin with,” Moe shares. “Customer service falls short, and business owners have to close their doors as a result. We don’t want to be in a similar situation. We want to provide easy access to busy clients, so that we can work quickly to provide solutions for each of them.” In 2019, the two formally created a partnership to service the pest control needs of all South Floridians. Since that time, they have digitized the business, moved away from paper records, and even provided an online portal for their customers to book appointments, track services, and make payments. These advances not only assist customers, but they also serve as a support system for pest control technicians, which further ensures consistently prompt and punctual service to all clients. The company, as a result, continues to expand, having recently completed their fourth acquisition in an effort to grow their reach within the community and provide unparalleled, regional pest control service. Pest Pro Rid All sets itself apart from all other pest control companies with the implementation of their Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Other companies visit a home and simply administer recommended chemicals without truly assessing from where the issue originates. Kevin and Moe take a more serious approach to pest control needs. They believe in a comprehensive solution, which inc-ludes: inspecting all areas inside and outside of a home or business, identifying all areas of potential entry points, and creating a protective barrier both inside and around the property. Pest Pro Rid All’s team is knowledgeable about where pests hide, their habits, and infestation patterns and will work diligently to create a custom plan for all your needs. Your home will be treated with the utmost care, and your team will provide you with details during each step of the process. Pest Pro Rid All takes your safety and that of your children and pets very seriously. Kevin and Moe have taken the utmost care in developing pest control solutions using only the safest materials on the market. They pride themselves in providing solutions with products that are eco-friendly and less toxic than most common household products. Pest Pro Rid All has treated over 75,000 homes, has won the 2020 Best of Hollywood award for outstanding services, and is the official pest control company of the Florida Panthers and the BB&T center. It’s commitment to the community is unrivaled by any pest control service, and their commitment to excellence is witnessed by each of their customers. With Kevin and Moe combining truly unique pest control methods, modern technology, and compassion for the needs of their customers, Pest Pro Rid All will continue to be a powerful force in solving the pest control needs of the South Florida market. You will not find a more all-encompassing company to service your home or business. So - Go put your umbrella in the sand, sip your drink, and toss a burger on the grill. Enjoy your summer, because whatever your pest control needs are - Pest Pro Rid All has you covered! You can visit them at MyPestPro.com, or call them at 954-247-4087. They are available Monday – Friday, 9am-7pm & Saturday, 9am-3pm (closed Sunday). Other hours available upon request, and all calls will be answered within 24 hours. < Previous News Next News >

  • The Hipster's Legacy - A Colorful Memoir Characterized By 1960's Nostalgia, Humor And Eccentricity | sun-times

The Hipster's Legacy - A Colorful Memoir Characterized By 1960's Nostalgia, Humor And Eccentricity South Florida Sun Times May 8, 2025 Immersing Oneself In The Pages Of Lorraine Gibson Cohen’s Captivating Memoir, The Hipster’s Legacy: A Memoir Of Dreams, Jazz And Family In 1960s California, Would Be Akin To Reading Betty Smith’s Coming-Of-Age A Tree Grows In Brooklyn And Gerald Durrell’s Endearing My Family And Other Animals At The Same Time. Cohen is the daughter of 1940s Jazz Pianist Harry the Hipster Gibson, who claims to have coined the term “hipster” and in her book, she recalls her years in a funky, red-shingled cottage next to a landfill in Southern California where her life was rife with eccentric characters and absurdly humorous situations. “When I was 22 years old, I started writing in an old gray loose-leaf notebook while I was living temporarily with my older sister, her three little children and my younger brother in a small beach town in Southern California,” Cohen recalled. “I wrote down things as they happened. All the funny things and the not-so-funny. There were short stories, character studies of people and things, even a song or two. Sixty years later, I found the notebook and started writing again. Before I knew it, I was writing a book.” A memoir that reads like a novel, The Hipster’s Legacy includes 15 illustrations (by Cohen herself) and 35 family photos to help bring to vivid life the coming-of-age story of a late bloomer and quiet dreamer. Born into a musical family and raised on dreams of fame and glory, 22-year-old Cohen finds it tough going on her own when she moves to Hollywood. Accepting defeat, she takes the 20-mile ride back home. But home isn’t quite the same at 230 Culper Court. In her absence, her mother has moved out to live “in sin” with a used car salesman named Bob. Replacing her at the cottage is Cohen’s older sister, Arlene, her three kids, and Cohen’s younger brother, Jeff. Cohen’s life takes a different turn as she learns to fit in with her newly re-arranged family and their quirky friends, exotic oddballs, hapless misfits, and the flotsam and jetsam of strange and talented people who pass through the little red cottage by the sea. The Hipster’s Legacy is an intriguing and often humorous memoir of a unique family influenced by a hard-working mother who just missed being a saint and a father, the wild jazz pianist and entertainer known as Harry the Hipster, whose amazing abilities and crazy style influenced the evolution of Rock and Roll. The US Review of Books calls The Hipster’s Legacy “A vibrant, decadent work ... whimsical ... a delight and a pleasure ... a resounding masterpiece.” Available from: https://www.amazon.com/Hipsters-Legacy-Memoir-Dreams-California/dp/B0DR3DS2RX Author Lorraine Gibson Cohen Previous Next

  • In Memory of Michael Stern: A Tireless Fighter For Good And Dedicated Much of His Life To Helping Others

In Memory of Michael Stern: A Tireless Fighter For Good And Dedicated Much of His Life To Helping Others August 22, 2024 Share Michael Stern, an Aventura Commissioner passed away peacefully on July 25th at his family-filled Aventura home. He was 57. He was diagnosed with an advanced stage of Colorectal Cancer at 52 after delaying his Colonscopy for several years. Commissioner Stern was the second-longest serving elected official in Aventura's history. His commitment to serving others was evident as an elected leader and in his everyday life. Since being diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer in 2019, Michael dedicated himself to education and advocacy, saving lives. Aside from being a Commissioner, Michael Stern was also one of the creators of Aventura Magazine and spent much of his time after his diagnosis in 2019 urging others to get a Colonoscopy. He became an Ambassador in the fight against Colorectal Cancer and also advocated for funding Cancer Research in Washington. As part of the fight against Colorectal Cancer in 2023 and 2024, Aventura’s Colorectal Cancer Public Service Announcements won Gold Viddy Awards from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals due in large part to Stern’s contributions. Stern believed in an era where effective communication plays a vital role in raising awareness and driving social change, the Aventura Public Communicators Group with his contribution achieved a remarkable feat. The outstanding Short Film, "Michael Stern: Colorectal Cancer Awareness," was honored with the prestigious Gold Viddy Award from The Association Of Marketing And Communications Professionals. This recognition was a testament to the group's commitment to delivering impactful messages and their dedication to Public Health Initiatives. He made sure people knew his story to raise awareness about the disease. "I found out about my Cancer Diagnosis after waking up from my Colonoscopy in October 2019. At that time, it was unknown what stage I was at, just that it was most likely a Cancerous Polyp. It took about a week to find out it progressed to Stage IV." "I turned to Google, which was a very big mistake. After reading most of the results that I had about a 14% chance of living past five years, my life stood still for that moment. All I could think of is, "Will I see my kids grow up?" and "What do I say to them?" "How can I leave my family at this time? I have so much more to do. It took me a few weeks to come to grips with things. I started to think in a different direction." "I was very fortunate to have my wife (aka "my rock") stand by my side and listen to the waterfall of information thrown at me, as I was unable to comprehend anything. She was able to help me process things. I found the best medical team and focused on anything I can do to beat this. I surrounded myself with an incredible support system, family, and friends, who pushed me every day to keep going and stay strong. After multiple surgeries, Chemo Treatments, Temporary Ileostomy, and then a permanent one, CT Scans, MRIs, Blood Draws, and Port Flushes, I stand here today NED [No Evidence of Disease] and stronger than ever." "Having the right mindset in a Cancer Journey is half the battle." "Advice: The fear for me was getting that Colonoscopy. It was the total opposite of what I thought it was. It was so easy. I wish I knew this sooner, as I would have gotten my Colonoscopy a few years earlier. The Polyp could have been found early and prevented me from having Cancer. My advice is simple. GET A COLONOSCOPY! It could save your life." "Whatever part of the Cancer Journey you are on, take this life-changing event as an opportunity to do whatever you really want to do. Focusing on being positive. Try to get rid of Stress. Remove the fear. Enjoy and appreciate all the good things." Michael Stern Stage IV Colon Cancer Patients & Survivors Raising Awareness For Colorectal Cancer By sharing his story via Online and the Short Film he not only educated viewers about the importance of Early Detection and Prevention but also served as a source of inspiration and hope for those facing similar challenges. Colorectal Cancer is one of the leading causes of Cancer-Related Deaths globally. Despite its prevalence, the disease often goes undetected until it reaches advanced stages. Colorectal Cancer Screening can save your life. While over 90% of Colon and Rectal Cancers are found in people over age 50, anyone at any age can get Colorectal Cancer. All adults should talk to their doctor about when to start Screening for Polyps and Cancer. The general population should begin screening at age 45. Those with a Family History of Colorectal Cancer or Precancerous Colorectal Polyps may need to begin Screening before age 45, and anyone experiencing signs and symptoms of Colorectal Cancer (at any age) should have their symptoms evaluated. Screening should follow regular intervals through age 75 (the interval depends on which Screening method is used), and people over 75 should talk to their doctor about whether Screening is necessary. The Film serves as a reminder that Prevention and Early Intervention can significantly improve outcomes for individuals battling Colorectal Cancer. So take time to make that appointment, it could make a huge difference in your life. For more information, visit: www.fightcolorectalcancer.org - And to watch the video, visit: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGBO22Yx1G8 Sterns's funeral was held Sunday, 7/28, at the Aventura Government Center: 19200 West Country Club Drive, Aventura, Florida 33180. • Hollywood Native Defends America From Under The Sea | sun-times

Hollywood Native Defends America From Under The Sea By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Mitch Meppelink, Navy Office of Community Outreach Jun 26, 2025 Petty Officer 2nd Class Daniel Arroyo, A Native Of Hollywood, Florida, Serves The U.S. Navy Assigned To USS Georgia, Homeported At Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. As A Submariner, Arroyo Is Part Of A Small Percentage Of Navy Personnel Continuing A 125-Year Tradition Of Service Under The Sea To Help Ensure Americans’ Safety. Arroyo graduated from Hallandale High School in 2020. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Hollywood. “My hometown taught me positivity and patience,” Arroyo said. "Staying positive can be very difficult, but I always try to smile and understand that everything will pass, and I can thank my hometown for that." Arroyo joined the Navy three years ago. Today, Arroyo serves as a machinist's mate (nuclear). “I joined the Navy for change,” Arroyo said. "At the time, college wasn’t working out, and I wanted to build on who I was. I knew the Navy offered a great education, so I wanted to use that as well." Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is the homeport of East Coast ballistic-missile and guided-missile submarines. These submarines are capable of conducting operations in the Atlantic, Arctic, Eastern Pacific, and Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. It is also the only Navy base with the capability to support the Trident II missile, the most sophisticated nuclear missile designed to be launched from a submarine. Known as America’s “Apex Predators!,” the Navy’s submarine force operates a large fleet of technologically advanced vessels. These submarines are capable of conducting rapid defensive and offensive operations around the world, in furtherance of U.S. national security. There are three basic types of submarines: fast-attack submarines (SSN), ballistic-missile submarines (SSBN) and guided-missile submarines (SSGN). Fast-attack submarines are designed to hunt down and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships; strike targets ashore with cruise missiles; carry and deliver Navy SEALs; conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and engage in mine warfare. The Virginia-class SSN is the most advanced submarine in the world today. It combines stealth and payload capability to meet Combatant Commanders’ demands in this era of strategic competition. The Navy's ballistic-missile submarines, often referred to as "boomers," serve as a strategic deterrent by providing an undetectable platform for submarine-launched ballistic missiles. SSBNs are designed specifically for stealth, extended patrols and the precise delivery of missiles. The Columbia-class SSBN will be the largest, most capable and most advanced submarine produced by the U.S. - replacing the current Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarines to ensure continuous sea-based strategic deterrence into the 2080s. Guided-missile submarines provide the Navy with unprecedented strike and special operation mission capabilities from a stealthy, clandestine platform. Each SSGN is capable of carrying 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, plus a complement of heavyweight torpedoes to be fired through four torpedo tubes. Strategic deterrence is the nation’s ultimate insurance program, according to Navy officials. As a member of the submarine force, Arroyo serves aboard a platform capable of bringing the fight to enemies in defense of America and its allies. The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday this year. According to Navy officials, “America is a maritime nation and for 250 years, America’s Warfighting Navy has sailed the globe in defense of freedom.” With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America. Arroyo has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service. “My proudest accomplishment is making it through the nuclear pipeline,” Arroyo said. "It was not easy, but I kept at it even though a lot of people around me were quitting. Once I completed it, the feeling was great." Arroyo serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security. “Serving the Navy, to me, means preparation,” Arroyo said. "It is constantly giving me opportunities to set up my future for my life and, hopefully, for my future family's life." Arroyo is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible. “I would like to thank Machinist Mate 1st Class Rice,” Arroyo added. "He was my Nuclear Power School instructor, and he pushed and motivated me to complete my schooling. And of course, I want to thank my parents for their constant support."
