  • Feeling Overwhelmed

Feeling Overwhelmed By Bryan Golden March 22, 2024 Share Although life has its ups and downs, at times of prolonged or intense down periods there is the potential of feeling overwhelmed. When this happens, it can create a cascading effect. Your attitude turns negative, you feel distressed, your patience is worn thin, you become frustrated, your energy level drops, and you become discouraged. When you get into this mode, you feel powerless to extricate yourself. It seems that whatever you try is ineffectual. Nothing you do makes any difference. Although you desperately need a break, problems keep piling up. You feel like a victim with no ability to make any positive changes. You are perplexed as to why these things are happening to you. Being a good person, you don’t deserve what is happening and it’s just not fair. Why do bad things happen? Why are we faced with unfortunate situations? People have pondered these questions since the beginning of time without discovering any meaningful answers. We have little or no control over some of the circumstances that we face. There are many circumstances that are potentially overwhelming. They include natural disasters, economic misfortune, crime, loss of a loved one, failed or troubled relationships, family problems, and physical ailments. Whereas you can’t control what happens to you, you do have control over how you respond. Getting through an overwhelming period is challenging but it is doable. The bottom line is that you have no choice but to persevere. It will be a struggle, but giving up will only exacerbate your predicament. The way to make it through tough times is one day at a time. When even that seems overwhelming, take it one hour at a time. Give yourself a mental reprieve by changing your focus to what is OK in your life. You want to develop an attitude of gratitude. When you go through a list of what you have to be grateful for it helps break the negative thought cycle. The trap is that a negative attitude and bitterness repels what you want while attracting what you don’t want. When you are overwhelmed, it is very hard to alter your attitude. You don’t see any light and everything appears tainted. You become caught in a downward spiral. Developing your attitude of gratitude will break the negative cycle. At first, you may not think there is anything to be grateful for. However, you will find things. No positive aspect is too small or insignificant. The more you think about what is good in your life, the more of a positive impact it will have. Next, give yourself credit for any successes you have had, regardless of how small or insignificant you consider them. Even the things you tried that didn’t work as planned are accomplishments. It indicates you are being proactive. Unfortunately, many people take a passive role, just waiting for circumstances to improve. Since you never know how close you are to discovering solutions that work, you must persist. Take inspiration from those people throughout history who have overcome situations far more extreme that what you are facing. If they can do it, so can you. Your thoughts control your feelings. Even in dire circumstances, your thoughts are under your command. Your mind works nonstop to bring your thoughts to reality. When you believe that you will make it through, this is what your mind will work toward. Conversely, if you don’t feel there is any way out, you mind will actually work to keep you where you are. When you are overwhelmed, you can and will overcome the challenges facing you. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Take small steps, develop a strong attitude of gratitude, take one day at a time, and don’t give up. Others have succeeded and so will you. Bryan is the author of "Dare to Live Without Limits." City of Hollywood Charter Review Committee Members Needed December 22, 2022 Share The City of Hollywood has a Charter Review process established by the City Commission that includes a Charter Review Committee made up of nine members with a representative from each District and two appointed at large. Every six years, a committee is formed to review the City Charter, make recommendations as to whether a provision should be changed, remain the same, be deleted, or new provisions added. Charter amendments would then go before voters. In anticipation of the next vote in 2024, Committee appointments will be made March 2023, dependent upon number of qualified applicants. The committee will meet monthly to form recommendations which will be presented to the City Commission by June 2024. • Board and Committee meetings may require day or evening attendance. By accepting appointment to a Board or Committee, you are affirming your ability to attend meetings as scheduled. • Some positions require City of Hollywood residency. Once received, all application materials become the property of the City of Hollywood. Annual appointments are done at a Special Commission meeting in May of each year. A Message From The Mayor For Applicants Dear Fellow Residents and Volunteers, Thank you for your interest in the City’s Advisory Boards and Committees. The volunteers who serve on these boards contribute to the success of the City of Hollywood in countless ways both big and small. Prior to being elected Mayor, it was my pleasure to be appointed to one of these boards and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people, gain a better understanding of City government and play a part as a resident and business owner in moving the City of Hollywood forward. People volunteer for an endless variety of reasons. Some want to gain experience, acquire new skills, expand their network of contacts or simply give back to their community. One thing you almost always hear from people who volunteer is that it “feels good” to help others, promote worthwhile causes or make the community a better place to live. Whatever your interest, the City of Hollywood welcomes you to consider applying to be a part of one of the advisory boards and committees established by the City Commission. By getting involved, you’ll have a chance to provide new insights and expertise that can help guide the policy-making process. As someone who grew up in Hollywood and is deeply invested in the community, I want you to know that I am committed to ensuring our City lives up to the vision of its founder, Joseph Young, who wanted to create a “dream city by the sea” for everyone to enjoy. Since its incorporation in 1925, Hollywood has grown into one of the largest cities in Florida and has become a sought after destination for visitors from around the globe. With our diverse and distinctive neighborhoods, our historic beach Broadwalk, a vibrant downtown with numerous cultural attractions and year-round special events, Hollywood offers a hometown vibe in the heart of South Florida. I, along with my fellow Commission members, sincerely appreciate your interest in exploring opportunities to put your talent and skills to work for the betterment of the City. We believe the ideas and energy our residents bring to bear on topics that impact their lives results in better government and better public policy. • The Passing Of Sarge Pickman | sun-times

The Passing Of Sarge Pickman By Neil Keller Dec 10, 2025 The world of comedy lost a bright light with the recent passing of Steve “Sarge” Pickman at the age of 64 years old. If you ever saw him perform, you would have never forgotten the joy he brought. A fixture in South Florida and beyond, Sarge was a comedian who lived to make people laugh. I moved to south Florida 4.5 years ago and met Sarge a half dozen times, and each conversation left me impressed by his warmth and his ability to bring smiles to everyone around him. Even his last Facebook post, on November 27th, 2025, reflected his spirit: “Wishing a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you and your loved ones! See you soon! – SARGE.” That was who he was — always spreading cheer. From Miami Beach to Great Neck Born in 1961 to an Orthodox Jewish mother and an African American father in Miami Beach, Sarge — originally named Stephen — was adopted into a Jewish family in Great Neck, New York. His grandfather, Herman Shane, played a pivotal role in sparking his love of comedy. At Grossinger’s in the Catskills, Herman would tell young Stephen jokes, planting the seeds of a lifelong passion. Sarge’s early years were marked by talent and discipline. From ages 7 to 12, he studied at Juilliard in Manhattan. Later, at South Kent School in Connecticut, he excelled both academically and athletically, playing on the football team’s offensive and defensive lines. At Boston University, he earned the nickname “Sarge” — a moniker that stuck for life. Struggles and Redemption Like many entertainers, Sarge faced personal battles. In the mid-1980’s, drugs and alcohol nearly derailed his life. He candidly admitted to stealing from a friend’s apartment to fuel his addiction. But on December 26, 1990, he made a life-changing decision: to stop drinking and using drugs. That commitment to sobriety became the foundation for his future success. Breaking Into Comedy Sarge’s first paid comedy gig came in 1992 in New York City. His routine was only six minutes long, but he repeated it ten times to fill an hour slot every Sunday. The venue later turned out to be a mafia front under FBI surveillance — and Sarge discovered he had been hired to distract the agents. It was an unusual start, but it didn’t stop him. His career soon intertwined with sports. Working for ABC Wide World of Sports and CBS’s The NFL Today, he received advice from Greg Gumbel: “To be a sportscaster you have to be careful with what you say. You’re very talented — you should be a comedian so you can speak whatever you want.” Sarge took that advice to heart. Sharing the Stage With Legends In 1994, he was asked to replace Jerry Seinfeld at the Baseball Writers’ Association of America dinner. He recalled joking with the crowd about being mistaken for Mets outfielder Cleon Jones — a moment that brought the house down. Soon after, Hall of Famer Bob Gibson invited him to perform at a charity event in Omaha, where Sarge entertained an audience that included George Brett, Sandy Koufax, Steve Carlton, and Willie Mays. Koufax even arranged to sit next to him on the flight back to Los Angeles, intrigued by Sarge’s Jewish identity. From there, his career soared. He performed at Radio City Music Hall, entertained at Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game in 1997, and worked on cruise ships across the globe. He hosted his own Fox Sports Radio show, Sarge in the Foxhole, which aired on Armed Forces Radio, and he visited troops in Iraq three years in a row. He later created and produced Fox’s Best Damn Sports Show Period. Along the way, he opened for icons like Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, the Beach Boys, the Four Tops, Taylor Dayne, and Donna Summer. A Life of Joy and Identity Sarge often said he never faced racism or antisemitism in his career. “I am an American. Race should not matter,” he explained. His favorite comedians — Alan King, Gilbert Gottfried, and Robert Klein — reflected his appreciation for sharp wit and cultural humor. In 2007, he married Ania, who converted to Judaism, and together they raised their son Zander, now 17. He authored “Black Boychik” and recently appeared in the film A Brooklyn Love Story, available on Amazon. His website: www.IamSarge.com offers a glimpse into his multifaceted career. Remembering Sarge What made Sarge special wasn’t just his talent, but his outlook. He lived each day to the fullest, and added. “I love where I am right now. I have no agent, a wonderful son. I do not have to travel if I do not want to.” I will miss Sarge deeply. He was always filled with love, laughter, and the ability to brighten any room. His legacy is one of joy — and that is the greatest gift a comedian can leave behind. Neil Keller is a Jewish historian. Visit: www.NeilKeller.com to learn who is Jewish. • February is American Heart Month: Understanding the Impacts of LDL Cholesterol

February is American Heart Month: Understanding the Impacts of LDL Cholesterol By Family Features February 23, 2024 Share About 38% of American adults have high Cholesterol, which can be caused by poor lifestyle habits or genetics, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Having a high Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol number - considered "bad" Cholesterol - can contribute to fatty buildups (plaque) and narrowing of the arteries. LDL Cholesterol is also the type of total Cholesterol most closely associated with an increased risk for a Heart Attack or Stroke. In fact, 75% of Heart Attack and Stroke survivors reported having high Cholesterol, according to a Harris Poll survey conducted on behalf of the American Heart Association, yet less than half (49%) prioritize lowering their Cholesterol. "There's a pervasive lack of public awareness and understanding around bad Cholesterol and its impact on your Cardiovascular Health," said Joseph C. Wu, MD, PHD, FAHA, American Heart Association Volunteer President and Director, Stanford Cardiovascular Institute and Simon H. Stertzer, MD, Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Stanford School of Medicine. "As bad Cholesterol usually has no symptoms, we often find that many patients are walking around without knowing they're at risk or how to mitigate it." To learn about LDL Cholesterol, its impact on heart health and the steps you can take to maintain a healthy number, consider this information from the Lower Your LDL Cholesterol Now initiative, nationally sponsored by Amgen. Get to Know Your LDL Number According to the survey, nearly half (47%) of Heart Attack and Stroke survivors are unaware of their LDL numbers. While Cholesterol levels can vary by race and ethnicity, with higher levels of LDL seen most often among Asian men and Hispanic women, various research studies on LDL have shown "lower is better." For healthy adults an LDL at or below 100 mg/dL is ideal for good health. If you have a history of Heart Attack or Stroke and are already on a Cholesterol-lowering medication, your doctor may aim for 70 mg/dL or lower. In addition to race and ethnicity, family history, age, sex, Tobacco use or exposure to secondhand smoke, eating habits, lack of physical activity, heavy alcohol usage and obesity can impact LDL numbers. Understand How Often to Check Your Numbers Because high LDL does not typically cause symptoms, it's important to have your number checked by your health care professional. Ask your doctor for the right frequency for you. Generally, healthy adults ages 20-39 should have their Cholesterol checked every 4-6 years. Adults over age 40, or those who have heart disease (including prior Heart Attack) or other risk factors, may need their number checked more often. Learn Risks Associated with LDL Too much LDL Cholesterol can lead to a buildup of fatty deposits inside your arteries - a condition known as Atherosclerosis - which can narrow arteries and reduce blood flow. If a piece of the plaque breaks free, it might travel into the bloodstream and block a blood vessel to the heart or brain, causing a Heart Attack or Stroke. This narrowing also elevates the risk of Peripheral Artery Disease. Take Steps to Manage High LDL Managing high Cholesterol is not one size fits all. Talk with your health care professional to map out the right treatment plan for you. According to American Heart Association guidelines, lifestyle habits can help control your Cholesterol, including: • Eating a healthy and balanced diet (emphasizing fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, lean protein and fish) • Staying active and aiming to get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week (such as brisk walking) • Managing Stress • Eliminating Tobacco use However, some individuals, especially Heart Attack and Stroke survivors, should have a conversation with their doctor about Cholesterol-lowering medications. Talk to your doctor about getting your cholesterol tested and visit: www.heart.org/LDL for more information. < Previous News Next News >

  • Construction Underway for New Jewish Education Center

Construction Underway for New Jewish Education Center By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayll December 9, 2021 Share This past Sunday marked the groundbreaking for Chabad’s new education center. Located in the North Miami-Dade neighborhood of Highland Lakes, Chabad Chayil has broken ground on a new five story building that is estimated to cost $12 million, with construction costing close to $9 million. Chabad Chayil was founded as the local Chabad Center in the 1980’s by the late Rabbi Dovid Bryn who passed away in 2002. Brought to Miami by Rabbi Bryn to replace him during his illness, Rabbi Moishe Kievman and his wife Layah have run the center ever since, and expanded its services. Daily prayer services, as well as an array of classes, weekly Shabbat & Holiday dinners & Kiddush lunch and an array of community programs are still held in a small synagogue and are available for men, women and youth of all ages. But the primary focus of this Jewish center is CHAP, Chabad Chayil’s uniquely designed Community Hebrew Afterschool Program - an all encompassing daily after-school program geared towards Jewish children in public schools who have no formal Jewish education. The new center has been designed to serve thousands of students. It measures 37,737 square feet of indoor space and approximately 10,000 square feet of outdoor terraces including a rooftop park. The design includes 14 regular classrooms and 2 specialty classrooms, an indoor playground, jungle gym, social hall, a children's library and a library for adults, which will double over as a synagogue. Strategically located at the Northern border of Miami-Dade and close to the Southern edge of Broward, Chabad Chayil is centrally located between 9 major public schools. CHAP curriculum Includes: Traditions, Holidays, Jewish History, Parsha, Jewish Art, Prayer & Judaic study with a primary focus on Hebrew Reading custom designed to teach each child at whichever level they may be. The program offers a first taste of Jewish learning in a creative, joyful, hands-on and interesting way. “We try to impart a sense of tradition using modern and innovative teaching techniques” says Mrs Layah Kievman who directs the program. This is a Hebrew School of the highest quality that kids can’t wait to go to! During its construction phase, Chabad Chayil’s synagogue and classrooms have been relocated to a number of small homes that are adjacent to the location where the new building will be located. Children ranging in age from 5 to 18 are taught the importance of being kind to one another, and how each and every person can bring good and light into the world. Arts and craft is incorporated into the daily assignments, and the children especially love working on holiday related creations. This year each child created their own unique menorah creation which were displayed at Chabad Chayil’s 18th annual Chanukah Fair. Combining the Groundbreaking with The Chanukah Fair made for a festive atmosphere. Thousands of children attended and had a great time playing in the bounce house, obstacle course, laser tag, and having their faces painted. Smashing pinatas for kosher candy was a big hit. A delicious BBQ was available for lunch or dinner, and for dessert, both children and adults loved the assorted array of donuts that were served (donuts are traditionally served on Chanukah). The Kievman family crowded onto the stage for the lighting of the menorah, singing the holiday blessings for the entire crowd. “This center has touched the lives of so many adults and children over the past 40 years” says Rabbi Kievman, “we are very excited by our expansion which allows us to reach even more people.” The adults were inspired by speeches from local political leaders that included Aventura Mayor Enid Weisman, State Rep Christopher Benjamin, school board member Lucia Baez-Geller, Miami-Dade commissioner Sally Heyman and others. Rabbi Avraham Korf who heads Chabad’s operations in the entire State of Florida was in attendance to wish a mazal tov (congratulations) to the community. Korf was sent to Florida over 60 years ago and is one of The Rebbe’s first emiseries. It was a tremendous honor to have Rabbi Korf in attendance, and a special treat to hear Korf’s stories from the old country. He knew Kievman’s great-grandfather since he was only a small child in Russia. Kievman’s great-grandfather officiated at Korf’s older brother’s Bar Mitzvah, in Samarkand, a city in Uzbekistan. Rabbi Korf spoke of Chasidic dynasty leaders, “The Rebbe Rashab said it was worth establishing the entire Lubavitch Yeshiva just for Reb Dovid Hordoker (Kievman).” “It was worth me being sent to Florida, just to see the tremendous work done by Kievman’s great grandson at Chabad Chayil” Rabbi Korf said with emotion. Please visit https://charidy.com/chabadchayil to have a part in this tremendous undertaking or to learn more about its' programs. Rabbi Kievman can be reached at (305) 770-1919. < Previous News Next News >
