More Than A Social Service Agency: How Jewish Community Services Of South Florida Serves As Miami-Dade's Safety Net By Jcsfl.org Jun 18, 2026 For More Than A Century, Jewish Community Services Of South Florida (JCS) Has Been A Source Of Hope, Healing, And Support For Individuals And Families Facing Life's Most Difficult Challenges. Founded In 1920 And Rooted In Jewish Values, Jcs Has Grown Into One Of Miami-Dade County's Most Comprehensive Human Service Organizations, Serving More Than 100,000 Individuals Annually Through A Network Of Programs Designed To Strengthen Lives, Promote Self-Sufficiency, And Ensure That No One Faces Hardship Alone. At its core, JCS serves as the community's safety net. Whether someone is struggling with food insecurity, mental health challenges, aging-related concerns, domestic abuse, or an unexpected crisis, JCS provides compassionate support and practical solutions that help people regain stability and thrive. Through its four pillars of excellence, Food Security, Case Management, Clinical Services, and Information & Referral, JCS delivers critical resources that improve quality of life for people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances. One of the most visible ways JCS supports the community is through its food assistance programs. As the cost of living continues to rise across South Florida, many families, seniors, and individuals struggle to afford basic necessities. The JCS Kosher Food Bank provides nutritious kosher food and household essentials to community members experiencing food insecurity, helping ensure that no one must choose between paying bills and putting food on the table. For homebound seniors and vulnerable adults, JCS also operates congregate meals sites, home-delivered meals and grocery assistance programs that help older adults maintain their health, dignity, and independence while aging safely in place. JCS is also nationally recognized for its work supporting Holocaust Survivors, one of the most vulnerable populations in Miami-Dade County. Through its Holocaust Survivor Assistance Program, JCS provides comprehensive case management, home care coordination, reparations assistance, emergency support, and personalized services that allow Survivors to remain safely in their homes and age with dignity. For many Survivors, JCS staff members are more than service providers, they are trusted advocates, companions, and lifelines who help navigate complex healthcare, financial, and social service systems. The organization's commitment to older adults extends beyond Holocaust Survivors. Through its Older Adult Case Management Program, JCS helps seniors access healthcare, transportation, benefits, financial assistance, social services, and community resources. The goal is simple but powerful: helping older adults maintain their independence, remain connected to their communities, and enjoy the highest possible quality of life. As Miami-Dade's senior population continues to grow, these services have become increasingly important for families seeking support for aging loved ones. JCS also provides critical support for individuals and families facing personal crises. Through Shalom Bayit, the agency's domestic abuse support program, domestic abuse survivors receive confidential case management, safety planning, advocacy, and trauma-informed services. The program empowers individuals to rebuild their lives while ensuring they have access to the resources and support necessary to achieve long-term safety and stability. Mental health services represent another cornerstone of JCS' work. The agency provides professional counseling services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families experiencing a wide range of emotional and behavioral health challenges. From anxiety and depression to grief, trauma, relationship issues, and life transitions, JCS clinicians help clients develop the tools and resilience needed to overcome obstacles and improve their overall well-being. Specialized services are also available for children, youth, families, ensuring culturally competent care for diverse populations throughout Miami-Dade County. In addition to direct services, JCS plays a vital role in connecting people to help through its Information and Referral programs. JCS Access serves as a central entry point for individuals seeking assistance, helping community members navigate available resources and identify the services that best meet their needs. When a person does not know where to turn, JCS Access provides guidance, support, and referrals that can make all the difference. The agency's impact extends even further through its operation of 211 Miami and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, these services connect callers to critical resources, crisis intervention, emotional support, and emergency assistance. Whether someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, searching for housing resources, seeking food assistance, or simply needs help navigating available services, trained specialists are available around the clock to provide support and direction. - Invitation From The Consul General Of Israel In Miami To Go On A Mission To Israel With European And North American Mayors - Part III | sun-times
Invitation From The Consul General Of Israel In Miami To Go On A Mission To Israel With European And North American Mayors - Part III By Hallandale Beach, Mayor Joy Cooper Jul 23, 2026 This Is Part III Of The Mission To Israel After we toured the bomb site in the city of Ramat Gan, we headed to Jerusalem. The first stop was Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center. I have had the honor of visiting the center three times. You can actually spend days at the center. The main exhibit and the surrounding building were designed by world-famous Moishe Safdie. The building is shaped in the form of a triangular prism. You enter into a world of darkness, and as you walk from room to room you cross over a main corridor that lights dramatically to the floor below. The most famous room is the Hall of Names. This cone-shaped, 9-meter-high houses all the known names of Holocaust survivors. There is a matching bottom of the cone where you look down into the bedrock. This symbolizes all the unknown victims. Multiple exhibits take the visitors through all aspects of the Holocaust. Hitler’s rise to power, propagandized antisemitism, the work camps, death camps, the war and the liberation. It is truly the main reason these missions are so important. Non Jews and Jews alike can learn the true history of the holocaust and the Jewish people. Their strength and resilience through years of antisemitism and explosions from many countries. It also teaches those who visit the true nature and importance of the Jewish homeland, Israel. From Yad Vashem we traveled to the Shalva Center. This world-renowned center was established to help people with disabilities. Ironically, the Ambassadors that lead our tour, Chaya and Chaim Bisker, used to have offices in Hallandale Beach. The couple gave birth to a daughter who had Autism. They found out about the center and now travel back and forth from Aventura to ensure their daughter has care to thrive. This center has become a model for care and training. Doctors, students and caregivers from around the globe come to learn best practices. They serve all ages from birth to adulthood with the goal of inclusion and opportunity. The 220,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility is equipped with an Olympic pool, gymnasium, auditorium, multiple age- and ability-appropriate playgrounds, cafeteria, art rooms, and roof meeting space. It was founded by Rabbi Kalman Samuels, whose son was not born disabled but received his second dose of DTP vaccine that was manufactured improperly. Their son Yossi woke up blind the next day and lost his hearing. There were now schools for them in Israel. They left Israel for New York to The Lighthouse For the Blind for treatment. There were many people who did not support their effort for a better life for Yossi. Many, including a prominent Rebbetzin, told Malki to move Yossi out of the house and care for her other children. Malik and Kalman committed to caring for their child. They moved back to Israel, finding that they could only pursue legal action in Israel. Malki prayed to God that if you help get Yossi better, I will commit my life to caring for other children with disabilities. They had what she referred to as a “Helen Keller” moment in Israel. A teacher who was deaf taught Yossi letters by hand. From there he took off and did not stop learning and growing. Rabbi worked and applied to the Israeli government to help him create the center. It grew and grew, and now it is a beacon of hope for over 2,000 children. They provide everything from physical therapy to cognitive education. Children receive education from birth all the way to adult vocational training. Their model provides service for the entire family. Mothers and fathers have an opportunity to receive emotional support and training. The center also allows parents to stay overnight. To find out more about the center and their services, visit: https://shavla.org. To find out more about the Samuels Family story they published a book, “Dreams Never Dreamed: A Mother's Promise that Transformed Her Son's Breakthrough Into a Beacon of Hope.” As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place at on Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. - The Art Of Waterfront Dining At Kaluz Fort Lauderdale | sun-times
The Art Of Waterfront Dining At Kaluz Fort Lauderdale By Merilee Kern, MBA May 14, 2026 Fort Lauderdale Is Not Short On Waterfront Restaurants, But Very Few Manage To Translate Location Into A Fully Realized Dining Experience. At Kaluz Fort Lauderdale, The Setting Is Not Just A Backdrop. It Becomes Part Of The Rhythm Of The Meal Itself. Located directly along the Intracoastal Waterway at 3300 East Commercial Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33308 Kaluz has built a reputation as one of South Florida’s most compelling dining destinations. Boats glide past just feet away from the dockside patio. Sunsets cast a warm glow across the water. The energy shifts seamlessly from daytime ease to evening sophistication. It is the kind of place where a casual lunch can evolve into a lingering dinner without ever feeling forced. What makes Kaluz stand out is not just the view. It is the way the entire experience is constructed around it. The restaurant blends Modern American cuisine with an upscale but approachable atmosphere, offering a balance that is increasingly rare in a market that often leans too far in one direction or the other. The menu reflects that same philosophy. It is both refined and accessible, with standout dishes like Chilean SeaBass, Filet Mignon, Danish Ribs, and the widely talked about Fire Grilled Artichoke. There is an emphasis on Fresh Seafood and Prime Cuts, supported by a robust lineup of Handcrafted Cocktails, Wines, and Desserts that feel indulgent without being overdone. Yet what truly defines Kaluz is consistency. It is a restaurant that knows exactly what it is and executes against that vision with precision. To better understand how that experience comes together, Kaluz Restaurant’s Marketing Manager, Jacob Encarnacion, offers a behind the scenes look at what drives the brand and why the Fort Lauderdale location continues to lead the conversation. MK: What are the top three things that set Kaluz Fort Lauderdale apart from its competition and other Kaluz locations? JE: The three key things that set the popular Kaluz Restaurant Fort Lauderdale location apart from our other locations start with its unmatched Intracoastal setting. Positioned directly on the water, the restaurant offers sweeping views and an outdoor patio where guests dine just feet from the Intracoastal, creating an experience that feels immersive and almost cinematic, especially at sunset as boats pass by and the waterfront comes to life. Secondly, this is the original Kaluz location and the flagship where the brand was born. With more than 13 years of history, it established the foundation for Kaluz’s reputation and success, ultimately paving the way for the opening of three additional locations across South Florida. Lastly, the combination of elevated service, consistent culinary execution, and a commitment to daily fresh product delivery ensures a level of quality and hospitality that remains distinctive, not only within our sister restaurants but also in comparison to the broader Fort Lauderdale dining scene. MK: Kaluz has built a reputation for balancing upscale polish with a relaxed waterfront vibe. How do you achieve that balance? JE: At Kaluz, the balance comes down to being intentional in every layer of the guest experience so nothing feels staged or intimidating, even though the execution is highly polished. The design, lighting, and open waterfront views set an upscale tone without needing formality, allowing guests to feel like they are somewhere special while still comfortable enough to settle in. Service style and pacing are key. The goal is attentive, knowledgeable hospitality that is not intrusive, with teams trained to read each table and adjust based on what guests want. The menu reinforces this balance by offering elevated dishes that remain approachable and versatile. Finally, the energy of the room ties everything together, with a lively bar and strong sunset crowd creating warmth and vibrancy. MK: How does the Intracoastal location shape the guest experience? JE: The way the Fort Lauderdale location sits along the Intracoastal Waterway makes it one of the most unique dining settings in the area, offering views that consistently leave a lasting impression. When paired with a thoughtfully executed menu, it creates a complete atmosphere that encourages guests to return. A major part of what makes it special is the ability for boats to dock directly at the restaurant, allowing guests to arrive and dine right off the water. This dock and dine element adds a level of accessibility and exclusivity that sets the location apart. MK: How do you decide which dishes represent Kaluz’s Modern American identity? JE: Kaluz Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale features a menu built around a balance of chef driven creativity, guest feedback, and real time performance data. Our in house chefs regularly develop new dishes, which are then evaluated before consideration for the menu. Guest feedback plays a major role as we track what resonates and observe ordering trends. We also rely on live performance data to track sales and consistency across service. This combination ensures the menu remains dynamic, approachable, and true to Kaluz’s Modern American style while offering something for every guest and occasion. MK: Several dishes have become favorites. What makes them stand out? JE: What makes these dishes stand out is the foundation of being a scratch kitchen, where nearly every component is made in house with careful attention to detail. The Pear and Prosciutto Flatbread combines Sweet Caramelized Pears, Savory Prosciutto, and Fig Balsamic Glaze for balance and contrast. The Thai Noodle and Shrimp Salad layers texture and brightness with Mango, Coconut, and Spicy Shrimp. The Bar Harbor Crab Cakes focus on high quality Jumbo Lump Crab with minimal filler. Together, these dishes reflect Kaluz’s balance of comfort and creativity through precise execution and quality ingredients. MK: How do you elevate comfort foods like Truffled Mac and Cheese? JE: The approach is about elevating, not reinventing, familiar comfort foods. With dishes like the Truffled Mac and Cheese, the goal is to refine a classic by adding depth and richness while keeping it recognizable and approachable. The creamy base remains central, while the addition of Truffle introduces an elevated finish that feels indulgent. It complements entrees like Steak and helps complete the dining experience. MK: What role do desserts play in the experience? JE: Desserts complete the Kaluz dining experience by delivering indulgence and a memorable final impression. Because we are a scratch kitchen, presentation and execution matter just as much as flavor. Portions are intentionally satisfying, reinforcing the idea of ending on a high note. Items like the Going Bananas Banana Cake provide a playful yet refined finish, while guest favorites like Key Lime Pie have become so popular that people purchase whole pies to take home. MK: What is your personal favorite dish? JE: My personal favorite is the Skirt Steak, featuring a perfectly seared outside cut finished with Chimichurri Sauce. It is served with Crispy Potato Wedges and a Fresh Arugula Salad, creating a balance of richness, freshness, and acidity. The Chimichurri enhances the natural char and tenderness, while the arugula adds contrast and the potatoes provide a hearty element. MK: How do you maintain consistency across locations while allowing each to feel unique? JE: We ensure consistency by building on experience from existing locations while maintaining high standards. Teams share feedback and refine operations while keeping the guest experience at the center. At the same time, each location reflects its own community and setting, whether it is the waterfront in Fort Lauderdale or other local environments. MK: Any interesting history about the location? JE : Kaluz Fort Lauderdale was originally an old standalone restaurant known as Roadhouse Grill. The building was demolished and fully reimagined to introduce the Kaluz Brand, including the addition of a dock and waterfront elements that transformed it into a unique destination. And, public figures who have dined at the Kaluz Fort Lauderdale location include Scottie Pippen, Tiger Woods, and the Pouncey brothers. A Dining Experience That Holds Its Own Beyond the interview, what becomes clear is that Kaluz is not relying on any single element to define its success. It is the combination of location, menu, service, and atmosphere that allows it to consistently rank among the top waterfront restaurants in Fort Lauderdale. The outdoor patio remains one of its strongest draws, offering an experience that feels both relaxed and elevated. Reservations are recommended for indoor dining, while patio seating operates on a first come basis, often filling quickly during peak hours. From appetizers like Sweet Ginger Calamari and Tuna Tartare to entrees like Cedar Plank Salmon and Bone-In Ribeye, the menu is designed to appeal to a wide range of tastes without losing cohesion. Even the sides, from Truffled Mac and Cheese to Creamed Spinach, are treated as essential components rather than afterthoughts. Dessert closes the experience on a high note, whether it is the signature Banana Cake or a Classic Key Lime Pie that has become a take home favorite. In a market saturated with waterfront dining options, Kaluz Fort Lauderdale continues to distinguish itself by delivering not just a meal, but a fully realized experience. It is polished without being pretentious, lively without being overwhelming, and consistent in a way that keeps guests coming back. For visitors and locals alike, it remains one of those rare places that manages to live up to its setting. I Like Big Dogs and I Cannot Lie March 17, 2022 Share Calling big dog lovers, Freddie (ID 651668) is 5 years old, 75 pounds and waiting to meet you at the Humane Society of Broward County. He looks like he might have some Chesapeake Bay retriever in him, with his beautiful, brown-tipped fur coat. So… Freddie knows a few basic commands, especially if a tasty treat is involved. This fellow enjoys running around, but also likes his naps and might want to snuggle with you. While Freddie is not a fan of felines, if you have another dog at home, we recommend a meet and greet to see if they get along. Thanks to Dolly’s Dream, Freddie’s adoption fee is sponsored, and he gets to go home with goodies to help him settle in. Freddie has been waiting over a month and we think he is getting passed by because he is a big boy. Big dogs need loving homes too, don’t you think? If big dogs aren't your thing than maybe pigs are? Or a Guinea Pig that is. Let me introduce you to Nutter Butter (ID 652968) he is a one-year-old male Guinea pig who is inquisitive, friendly, and social. While he has not lived with other pets, this fellow is good with kids ages six and up. Sadly, he lost his home because his family no longer had time for him. He will need fresh greens, Timothy likes hay and a high-quality Guinea pig food for his diet. He might also benefit from being brushed so he is always looking his best. In addition, they receive preliminary vaccinations, a microchip, heart-worm test for dogs over seven months, feline leukemia test for cats, a limited 14-day health care plan courtesy of VCA Animal Hospitals, and a bag of Purina ONE pet food while supplies last. - Dogs Love The Aventura Mall: A Canine Adventure Awaits In The Heart Of A Shopping Paradise
Dogs Love The Aventura Mall: A Canine Adventure Awaits In The Heart Of A Shopping Paradise July 19, 2024 Share Nestled in the vibrant heart of Aventura, the Aventura Mall isn't just a shopping destination; it's a haven for dogs and their adoring owners. Proudly wearing its "pup-approved" badge, this sprawling mall has embraced the idea that shopping can be a tail-wagging good time for everyone involved. From the moment you step foot inside the Aventura Mall, it's clear that this isn't your average shopping experience. Amidst the luxurious stores and bustling corridors, dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcomed with open arms — or rather, open paws. "The Mall has seen firsthand how much joy dogs bring to their visitors which is why they made it a priority to create a space where they can feel just as at home as their owners." One of the highlights for dog owners at Aventura Mall is Jessica’s Dog Park, strategically located just outside the mall entrance by Serafina. This gated outdoor area is a dog's dream, offering ample space to stretch their legs, hydrate at dedicated water stations, and even take care of business on the lush green grass. For the convenience of pet parents, a handy pick-up station ensures cleanliness is maintained throughout the park. But the dog-friendly amenities don't stop there. Recognizing the diverse needs of their furry patrons, Aventura Mall has also installed a secondary Dog Station at the Lower Level entrance, ensuring that no matter where you roam, your dog's comfort is always a priority. While shopping can work up a thirst for humans, it's no different for our canine companions. Aventura Mall has thoughtfully installed two dog water fountains, strategically placed near the outdoor dining areas and Jessica’s Dog Park. These fountains not only keep dogs hydrated but also serve as gathering spots for owners to mingle and share stories of their shopping adventures. One of the unique charms of Aventura Mall is its pet-friendly dining options. Several restaurants, including: Tap 42 Craft Kitchen and Bar, Pubbelly Sushi, CVI.CHE 105, Serafina, Bella Luna, The Cheesecake Factory, Trattoria Rosalia, PANI, Pollos & Jarras, Motek & Toku, extend a warm welcome to dogs on their outdoor patios. Each patio is equipped with water bowls, ensuring that both owners and pets can enjoy a relaxing meal together. "We love seeing dogs lounging on our patios," said John at Tap 42. "It adds a wonderful dynamic to the dining experience and makes Aventura Mall truly special."
