  • Women’s Golf Takes Center Stage: WTGL Prepares With Two South Florida Talents | sun-times

Women’s Golf Takes Center Stage: WTGL Prepares With Two South Florida Talents By Neil Keller Oct 8, 2026 September 20, 2026 Marked “Media Day” For The Highly Anticipated Women Tomorrow’s Golf League (WTGL), Which Officially Launches This November At The SoFi Center In Palm Beach Gardens. The Inaugural Match — Los Angeles Golf Club vs. New York Golf Club — Will Tee Off On Sunday, November 8th, 2026 Ushering In A New Era For Women’s Professional Golf. WTGL will begin with five franchises: Atlanta Drive, Boston Common Golf, Los Angeles Golf Club, Motor City Golf Club, and New York Golf Club. Fans can learn more at: www.WTGLgolf.com . A New Vision for Women’s Golf I spoke with Rufus Hack, who became President of both the TGL and WTGL a few months ago. Hack shared that the league has been in development for two years in collaboration with the LPGA. “We have been talking about this league with the LPGA for the last two years,” Hack said. “We have five teams, but we plan to expand.” Each team features five elite players — among them Celine Boutier, Andrea Lee, Gaby Lopez, Lexi Thompson, Michelle Wie West, and Ina Yoon — ensuring that the WTGL’s debut season will showcase some of the most recognizable names in women’s golf. Nataliya Guseva: A Rising Star One of the most compelling young talents entering the WTGL is Nataliya Guseva, a 23‑year‑old standout who now lives in Miami and competes for the Atlanta Drive in the WTGL. “My uncle inspired me to play golf at the age of 7½ in the Czech Republic,” she told me. Nataliya moved to Miami at 17, where she joined the University of Miami women’s golf team. Most of her early role models were male — Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy — though she also admired fellow Floridian Lexi Thompson. Nataliya played two seasons for the Hurricanes before joining the Epson Tour, the LPGA’s developmental circuit. In 2021, she became the first University of Miami golfer ever named ACC Freshman of the Year. She followed that with a victory at the Women’s Eastern Amateur the next year. Her 2026 season has been impressive: • 11th place at the CPKC Women’s Open • 13th place at both the Riviera Maya Open (Mexico) and the FM Championship (Massachusetts) • 24th place at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship (Minnesota) Currently ranked #109 in the world, Nataliya is rising quickly — and she is eager to compete indoors for the first time. “Being on a team is incredibly fun for us golfers,” she said. Lexi Thompson: A South Florida Favorite Another player sure to draw local excitement is Lexi Thompson, who competes for Motor City Golf Club. Lexi has lived in Delray Beach for 13 years, having moved from Coral Springs, where she trained at Eagle Trace Golf Club. Her dedication to the sport began early — she started playing at age five with “Snoopy clubs” and completed her schooling online to focus on golf. Lexi’s family is steeped in the sport: her father played at UCLA, and her brothers Nicholas and Curtis both became professional golfers. Her accomplishments are extraordinary: • 11 LPGA Tour victories • Competed in the U.S. Women’s Open at age 12, shooting 76 and 82. • Winner of the 2014 Chevron Championship, defeating Michelle Wie West • Four-time runner-up in major championships, including the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open and 2022 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Now 31, Lexi continues to balance family and golf. She finished 12th at the 2026 Chevron Championship in Houston and is currently ranked #164 in the world. She is also expecting her first child in February 2027. When asked about joining the WTGL, Lexi said, “As soon as I heard about the WTGL, it was a no-brainer to join. Any chance when we're able to grow the women's game I think it's our highest priority.” She added that playing with a shot clock will “make it more fun.” Opening Night Talent The SoFi Center seats approximately 1,500 fans, and demand is expected to be high. The opening match will feature: Los Angeles Golf Club: Aki Iwai, Alison Lee, Gaby Lopez, Kiara Romero, & Michelle Wie West New York Golf Club: Linn Grant, Danielle Kang, Lydia Ko, Yana Wilson, & Rose Zhang With this level of star power, tickets will be limited — fans should act quickly to secure seats for the inaugural WTGL season. The WTGL promises fast-paced action, world-class talent, and a groundbreaking new format that will elevate women’s golf. South Florida is fortunate to host this historic launch, and the excitement is already building. • "Potholes Are Not Partisan" Please Do Your Part - As Every Single Vote Will Count

"Potholes Are Not Partisan" Please Do Your Part - As Every Single Vote Will Count By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper November 3, 2022 Share It’s been an unusual couple of weeks here in Hallandale Beach. We have our Local Elections taking place and while the current Commission has been very vocal about what we don’t want, we do hope that the electors of our City understand that the future is in your hands. If you are like me, you probably can’t wait until next Wednesday. But please do your part as every single vote will count. I hope you have already had the chance to Vote early. Early Voting is still taking place at our Cultural Center right behind City Call on Southeast 3rd Street and Federal Highway until Sunday. You will also be able to drop off your Ballot. If you wait until Tuesday to Vote, please make sure you know where your Polling place is. In years past, we used to have 15 locations but now we only have three. There are three now in the City. One off of Parkview Drive in the Three Islands area at the Clubhouse of Towers of Ocean View, the Community Cultural Center and at Foster Park at the 600 block. It seems that 6 years ago, our Elections and Political Climate brought out the worst in society. The Attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer wielding maniac intended for her sheds light on how bad it has truly gotten. Then the former President Trump's son joking about it is over the top. Kanye West’s disgusting Antisemitic Rhetoric about Jewish people set me over the top. I typically do not get in this fray as a Mayor in a Non-Partisan Seat but not talking out about this hatred is almost as bad as condoning it. We cannot all agree on every topic. There are good and bad policies and people on both sides of the Isle. Republican, Democrat or Non-Partisan, we all need to stand up against these Extremists and Extreme Views. They are crippling our country. This Tuesday, I’m sure those of us that traversed throughout the City realize that traffic was pretty heavy and diverted off of both Federal Highway and Pembroke Road due to the visit of President Biden. As of the writing of this article, I am hoping that Tuesday went well and that there were no protests or worse incidents. I received a call on Friday from the White House after evaluating many locations for President Biden’s Policy Presentation that we were one of the top choices. They loved our Facilities at OB Johnson Park and The Hepburn Center. As you can imagine, we were actually very proud of our Community and accomplishments. You can imagine the pride I felt as your Mayor, the feeling was fleeting. I realized the fast hard work we would need to perform to ensure his trip to our City was safe. Our City Manager, our Chief Police Department and Parks Department were all hands-on deck working alongside the Secret Service. The President was coming to South Florida for many reasons. Obviously, the Election is important but to discuss the work he has done over the past year on Infrastructure. This topic is just as important if not even more important for our cities, state and country. Our City has been one of the prime examples of how to do things right and having shovel ready projects to leverage these programs. I know many people have clouded Partisan Political ideas when it comes to these issues but after being in office for more than 20 years it is an amazing accomplishment that President Biden has moved forward with Infrastructure. I have served under multiple Presidents: President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama, President Trump and now finally, President Biden. This President finally passed significant Legislation to invest in the future of America and American cities. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so cities like Hallandale Beach can Reinvest in our Infrastructure when it comes to Water, Sewer and Wastewater. In addition, there will be investments in broadband technologies, roadways, bridges, green infrastructure and the power grid hardening. In Hallandale Beach, we know so well that hardening our facilities and addressing Sea Level Rise is paramount. I still find it hard to believe there are those that are still deniers of climate. They need to come to our Intracoastal Water during The King Tide Season. While the President, I am sure will speak on these Policy Issues, there are additional Investments in Schools and Healthcare. It is amazing that for the first time the cost of medicine is being addressed. The cost reduction In Insulin alone has impacted millions of lives across our country. Some of us are Republicans and some are Democrats. There is one thing I always share, ”potholes are not Partisan.” Infrastructure is Non-Partisan and this President didn’t just talk the talk, walk the walk and get it done. The conversation about Infrastructure couldn’t be timelier as we are poised to make Millions and Millions of Dollars of Investments in Infrastructure. Combined with our Taxpayer Dollars these State and Federal Resources are already being put to work. These Investments are critical for our future. Many of us know that we have had over 500+ Water Main Breaks. This topic has been brought up during the elections. While our Staff has been Mobile and Agile Fixing and Repairing many of our Valves and Pipes the time of Band Aid Fixes that have been taking place in the past years is ending. The end of the month we will be Mobilizing Construction on Lane Boulevard to replace our Main Sewer Line. On Three Islands, they will begin a Replacement Project for Water Mains. With our Commission, now that we are on the same page have approved Projects that have been sitting on the shelf for over 5 years plus, your Commission is not just talking the talk, but walking the walk. Get out and Vote, so we can continue our hard work. As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out at my office: (954) 457-1318. On my Cell/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or email at: jcooper@cohb.org . < Previous News Next News >

  • Protect Individuals With Dementia From Wandering: Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Offers Information To Families

Protect Individuals With Dementia From Wandering: Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Offers Information To Families August 15, 2024 Share Wandering is a very common and potentially dangerous behavior for those living with Dementia, but it is even more hazardous during the hot summer months. High temperatures and prolonged sun exposure can very quickly cause Heat Stroke and Dehydration. To help caregivers protect their loved ones over the summer months, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is providing tips to reduce the chances of wandering and help prepare them to respond quickly if their loved one goes missing. “Hot summer months create additional safety risks if someone with Dementia wanders from home, which is why their family caregivers need to be proactive,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Creating a setting where someone with Dementia can maintain the benefits of walking by being active and stimulated in a Safe Environment, while also meeting basic needs, and having an Emergency Plan in place, are the best ways to protect the person’s Well-Being and Quality Of Life.” Tips for families: Examine the motivations for wandering. There can be many reasons why someone with Dementia wants to walk outdoors; it can provide a feeling of purposefulness, excitement, or pleasure. This is especially true if the person lived an active lifestyle prior to the onset of their illness. Identify consistent and sustainable ways to support physical activities and stimulation in a Safe Environment: create walking paths around the home with visual cues and engaging objects; involve the person in simple tasks; and offer enjoyable activities (i.e., exercise, music, crafts). Ensure the basic needs (i.e., thirst, hunger, a need to use the bathroom) are met, as wandering can also be an expression of an unmet need. Safeguard the home. Facilitate safe movement by avoiding clutter and eliminating tripping hazards. Be mindful of how objects like car keys, jackets, and purses might trigger the person to leave suddenly. Install electronic chimes or doorbells on doors so someone is alerted if the individual tries to exit. Consider using a smart doorbell with an app that can notify you when someone is entering or exiting the home. Be aware of your loved one’s patterns. Know what times of the day may be more activating than others and try to offer stimulating activities during those times. Encourage healthy sleep habits to reduce the chances of the person leaving during the middle of the night. If your loved one does wander, document their patterns (frequency, duration, time of day, etc.) to help guide you in the future. Develop a safety plan. Keep a list of places the person may go (i.e., previous home or place of employment, favorite spots around town). Have a recent close-up photo and medical information readily available to give to First Responders, if needed. Keep a list of people to contact if the person goes missing and ask neighbors to call you if they see the person out on their own. See if your community has a Safety Program for families affected by Dementia, such as Project Lifesaver, which allows you to voluntarily enroll your loved one to receive locating technology which First Responders can activate if the person goes missing. To the greatest extent possible, get input from the person when developing the Safety Plan. Mitigate risks by taking precautions. Caregivers should take extra precautions during the summer, such as ensuring the person is properly hydrated, dressed in light clothing, protected from the sun, and always supervised when outdoors. Keep a hat handy to protect your loved one’s eyes and face. Using tracking devices or alarms, and educating neighbors about your loved one’s condition, can also help quickly locate an individual if they do wander. AFA’s Helpline is staffed entirely by Licensed Social Workers who are specifically trained in Dementia Care and can provide additional information about wandering prevention tips. The Helpline is available seven days a week by phone: (866) 232-8484. By text message at: (646) 586-5283. And web chat at: www.alzfdn.org .
