- An Autonomous World Starts with a Robotic Chanukah
An Autonomous World Starts with a Robotic Chanukah By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil December 25, 2024 Share Chanukah is known for the miracle of the Menorah that took place in the Temple, but the holiday was called Chanukah from the word Chanukat Habayit (lit Dedication of House), because it was the rededication of the Temple, after being occupied by the Greeks. Chanukah also comes from the word Chinuch, which means education. During this holiday we are supposed to gather our families together and educate our children and ourselves, about the miracles done for us on a constant basis. Together with recalling the original Chanukah miracles, we remind our families about the personal family stories that we each have, that brought us to where we are today. Chanukah (sometimes spelled Hanukkah or Hanuka), which is also known as the Festival of Lights, begins this year on the evening of Wednesday, December 25th, 2024, and concludes 8 days later, on the evening of Thursday, January 2nd, 2025. It recalls the victory of a militarily weak Jewish people who defeated the Syrian Greeks who had overrun ancient Israel and sought to impose restrictions on the Jewish way of life and prohibit religious freedom. They also desecrated and defiled the Temple and the oils prepared for the lighting of the menorah, which was part of the daily service. Upon recapturing the Temple only one jar of undefiled oil was found, enough to burn only one day, but it lasted miraculously for eight. In commemoration, Jews celebrate Chanukah for eight days by lighting an eight-branched candelabrum known as a menorah (the 9th branch is to help light the other 8). Today, people of all faiths consider this holiday a symbol and message of the triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness. Additional information about the holiday is available at: www.ChabadChayil.org/Holidays. This year’s menorah lighting is done with the recognition of the crucial need for a message of hope during a time that is so difficult for the people in Israel. The menorah serves as a symbol of light and hope for us today amidst the world's craziness, as it did for generations before us. The flames of the menorah shine out into the night, reminding us that even when confronted with much darkness, a tiny light can dispel it all. Each additional act of goodness and kindness, fills that corner of the world with light, slowly catching on and spreading like wildfire. One act of goodness and kindness can make all the difference. Uniquely, at the core of Chanuka’s observance is sharing the light with others who may not be experiencing it. What better time or place to celebrate, than at this year's 21st annual Street Fair celebration in Highland Lakes! This year's theme will be Robotic Chanukah, featuring the world-renowned Sophia the Robot, Robodog and several other robot celebrities! The free family-friendly event will this year take place on Sunday, December 29th, 2024/5785 beginning at 3:30 p.m. with pony rides, a petting zoo, an Obstacle Course, Laser Tag, Bounce House and other fun activities. This year's Street Fair will also feature Pedal Yard, teaching kids how to ride a 2 wheel bike on their own. There will also be a food court, holiday boutique, with music and lots of surprises throughout the day. As a family man who is deeply involved in the community, I must say that there is no better way to spend that Sunday. Adults and children alike, are welcomed to join the many dignitaries and community leaders for an enjoyable and a meaningfully fun time for everyone. The idea behind a Robotic Chanukah is, as the world gets ready for Moshiach, where we will all be busy with studying Torah and doing Mitzvahs, we will have robots helping us with our regular daily mundane tasks. Since Chanukah comes from the word Chinuch (education), we need to educate ourselves and prepare ourselves for an autonomous world, so that we can stay focused on what really matters! Sophia is the most realistic humanoid robot capable of displaying humanlike expressions and interacting with people. She’s the world's first robot to hold a passport and an Ambassador for the United Nations (whatever that's worth). This will be Sophia's first official Chanukah Celebration and her first time lighting a Menorah! Throughout the State of Florida, Chabad will be organizing scores of giant menorah displays of all sorts, including a grand celebration with the Miami Heat on January 1st, 2025, a huge concert at Rick Case Arena and scores of others. To find a local event here in Florida, or anywhere throughout the world, visit Chabad’s international Chanukah event directory at ChabadChayil.org/Chanukah or the Jewish community’s local directory at: https://JewishFlorida.news/events. This year, Chabad-organized menorah parades will see over 8,000 Chanukah menorah-topped cars hit the road, bringing the Chanukah message of hope and joy through the city and into residential neighborhoods, allowing families to safely share the joy and light of Chanukah with pride. Chabad centers worldwide have prepared over 32 million Chanukah candles, more than 700,000 menorah kits and 2.5 million holiday guides in 17 languages. Large display Menorahs are available at many online sources and can still get to you in time for the holiday. If you need a menorah or candles for yourself, or need any help celebrating the holiday or finding a large Menorah to display at your place of work, please call your local Chabad or my office at: (305) 770-1919. My favorite is the new LED ones available at: https://bit.ly/lightupmenorah. We can also help you plan your own Chanukah event, Menorah lighting or Latke party. And if you book early enough, we can send you a group of Yeshiva students to liven up or help run your event. We hope and pray for an end to all violence in the world, the return of all hostages and the eradication of all evil. We know that at the end goodness and light will prevail, and that even though we are outnumbered, righteousness will endure. We wish you and your family a very happy Chaunkah. May our days be filled with light, warmth, joy and positive energy, and always increasing, just like the Menorah lights that increase with each day. To join us for the beautiful annual free Chanukah event, become a vendor or sponsor, call (305) 770-1919 or visit: www.ChabadChayil.org/events. - Five Holiday “Dos And Don’ts” For Families Caring For Loved Ones With Dementia | sun-times
Five Holiday “Dos And Don’ts” For Families Caring For Loved Ones With Dementia South Florida Sun Times Dec 25, 2025 With The Holiday Season In Full Swing, The Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America (AFA) Is Offering Five Holiday “Dos And Don’ts” To Help The Over 7 Million American Families Caring For Someone With Alzheimer’s Disease And Other Dementia-Related Illnesses Celebrate The Holidays With Their Loved Ones In A Dementia-Friendly Way. “People living with Dementia deserve to continue experiencing the joy and warmth of the holiday season; they just may not be able to do so exactly how they did prior to the onset of their illness,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Senior Director of Educational and Social Services. “Caregivers can help create a meaningful, happy holiday season by being proactive, adaptable, and honoring the person’s wishes and abilities.” Consider these five holiday “dos and don’ts” if you are caring for a loved one with Dementia: Don’t: Overdecorate. Holiday decorations are enjoyable, but too many lights, ornaments, or changes in the home can confuse or overwhelm someone with Dementia and cause wandering. Focus on a few meaningful, familiar decorations and gradually phase them in to create a festive and stress-free environment. Do: Remove hazards and dangerous decorations. Remove decorations that could pose a risk, such as sharp ornaments, candles, loose cords, or small objects that could be tripped over or swallowed. Avoid ones that look like food or candy, as they can be mistaken for edible treats and create choking or dental hazards. Dementia can cause changes in vision, depth perception, and gait, so keep walkways clear and ensure that all decorations are secure and out of reach, creating a safe and comfortable holiday environment. Do: Adapt past favorite traditions or create new ones. Build on old traditions when appropriate, such as enjoying favorite music or movies, or looking at pictures of past holiday celebrations. If your loved one always baked a variety of holiday cookies, just make one favorite recipe together. Give your loved one an easy task, such as stirring, sprinkling sugar, or placing cookies on a tray. Start new traditions that center on activities and events the person enjoys and can do, such as touring neighborhood holiday lights, and do them together. Take a strengths-based and person-centered approach and incorporate what the person can do and what they choose to do now, rather than thinking about what they used to do. Focus on joyful things and forego activities that are overly stressful. Experiencing sadness about changes and losses, especially during a holiday, is normal. Acknowledge these feelings and then move on to new ways to celebrate. Do: Prepare a quiet, calm space before a holiday gathering. Create a space where your loved one can sit comfortably during a holiday gathering if the celebration becomes overwhelming. This way guests can visit the space in small groups or one-on-one. Provide familiar comfort items in the space (i.e., favorite blanket, sweater, stuffed animal) so your loved one feels safe and at ease. As much as possible, maintain the person’s normal routine when scheduling holiday gatherings; disruptions in routine can be difficult for someone living with Dementia. Don’t: Refuse help. Many aspects of the holiday season—shopping for gifts, making preparations, or hosting a holiday gathering—can be stressful by themselves, and caregiving adds another layer of responsibility. Relatives and friends might be eager to help but do not know how. Accept their offers of assistance and be specific about what would be helpful; running errands, bringing a dish to the celebration, or spending time with your loved one so you can take a break. This allows you time to think more clearly and complete other holiday tasks. The AFA Helpline is available seven days a week to help provide additional information about creating Dementia-Friendly holidays or any other caregiving questions. Connect with a licensed social worker by phone at: 1 (866) 232-8484. Webchat at: www.alzfdn.org . Or text message at: 1 (646) 586-5283. - New Data Reveals Which States Are Dangerously Overspending On Consumer Purchases – Is Yours One of Them? | sun-times
New Data Reveals Which States Are Dangerously Overspending On Consumer Purchases – Is Yours One of Them? Sam Bourgi Dec 25, 2025 An Analysis Of Spending Patterns Reveals Differences In How Americans Shop Across Different States, With Some Regions Showing Spending Increases That Far Outpace Income Growth And Signal Potential Financial Danger For Millions Of Households. The research from InvestorsObserver, examining nearly three decades of consumer data, found that while nationwide spending on durable goods increased by 90% since 1997, certain states have seen explosive growth exceeding 600% in the category of telephone and related communication equipment. The study analyzed state-by-state spending data from 1997 to 2024, credit card balance trends, and shifts in consumer purchasing patterns. This allows for identifying which states may be courting financial trouble through unsustainable shopping habits. The States Where Spending Has Exploded The research identifies several states where spending growth strongly exceeds national averages. Multiple states show more than 600% growth in durable goods spending since 1997, with communication equipment and electronics spending surging over 600% in top states: North Carolina 672%, North Dakota 648%, Washington 645%, and South Dakota 614%. “These numbers represent real financial risk for families,” says Sam Bourgi, a Finance Analyst at InvestorsObserver. “When spending growth outpaces income growth by this magnitude, it’s almost always fueled by debt, and that’s a dangerous game to play.” This Might Be the Credit Card Crisis The research found that average credit card balances at major issuers including American Express, Discover, and Capital One have grown at 0.5% monthly since 2020. This translates to approximately 6% per year, with pronounced spikes during the Black Friday season. “What we’re seeing is a storm,” warns Bourgi. “Easy credit, aggressive seasonal marketing, and social pressure to keep up with spending in high-growth states. This can eventually lead to financial difficulties.” A Cultural Shift in Consumer Behavior “The shift from buying a car or jewelry – items that last for years – to constantly upgrading phones and electronics creates a perpetual spending cycle,” explains Bourgi. “In states where this pattern is most pronounced, we’re seeing households trapped in endless upgrade cycles they can’t afford.” The data reveals a huge divide in shopping habits across America. California leading in total durable goods purchases pump billions into the economy but show concerning debt accumulation patterns. Meanwhile, other states have actually reduced spending in certain categories, with some showing 10% to 16% declines in jewelry, watches, and vehicle purchases. “The states pulling back on traditional luxury items might actually be the smart ones,” notes Bourgi. “They’re avoiding status symbol purchases that depreciate quickly.” Post-Pandemic Spending Surge The 2020 to 2024 period had a strong growth in spending across multiple states. North Carolina tops the list with an 18% change from 2020 till 2024 (inflation adjusted), and is followed by Nevada (16%), and Texas (16%). “The pandemic created a pressure cooker effect,” Bourgi explains. “Pent-up demand, stimulus money, and changed lifestyles led to explosive spending growth that’s simply not sustainable. We’re now seeing the consequences as credit card balances climb and savings rates plummet.” Geographic Patterns of Financial Risk Bourgi has identified several warning signs that indicate when state-level spending patterns suggest widespread overspending. If a state’s credit card spending has grown more than three times the national average, when credit card balance growth exceeds 6% annually, when spending concentrates heavily in rapidly depreciating categories like electronics, or when spending growth strongly exceeds median income growth, residents should be particularly cautious. “Knowing your state’s spending patterns is crucial for making smart decisions,” advises Bourgi. “If you’re in a high-spending state, you need to be extra vigilant about not getting swept up in the frenzy.” The Cost of Keeping Up The research highlights how credit card interest can quickly erase any savings through seasonal discounts during Black Friday and Christmas. Various surveys show that consumers can spend months, if not more, paying off holiday debts. If a consumer carries a balance at a 20% annual percentage rate, the interest accrued in just 18 months will erase the benefit of an initial 30% discount. “The most expensive thing you can buy on Black Friday is the illusion that you need to match your state’s spending trends,” warns Bourgi. “Our data shows clear geographic patterns in overspending that suggest social pressure plays a huge role in driving dangerous financial behavior.” Expert Recommendations for Consumers According to Bourgi, awareness is the first step toward financial safety. “If your state’s spending has grown 600%, that doesn’t mean yours should too,” he says, and recommends that consumers in high-risk states consider a cash-only strategy for seasonal shopping and focus on needs rather than wants. The data shows people are abandoning necessities for wants. “Reversing that trend is crucial for financial health. This allows you to shop smart regardless of what your neighbors are doing,” explains Bourgi. About the Research Researchers from InvestorsObserver analyzed American shopping trends over the past three decades. The focus was on state-by-state and national sales data for durable goods, credit card transaction volumes, and shifts in consumer spending across key product categories like electronics, appliances, furniture, sporting goods, and jewelry. The Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) data was collected from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Monthly credit loan issuance data (2018–2025) for American Express, Discover, and Capital One was pulled from Bloomberg. Then, the researchers calculated how expenditures had changed over time (1997–2024). All calculations are inflation-adjusted. - 93 Year-Old Holocaust Survivor Returns To Auschwitz: David Schaecter Joins FIDF For Exclusive Mission To Poland And Israel
93 Year-Old Holocaust Survivor Returns To Auschwitz: David Schaecter Joins FIDF For Exclusive Mission To Poland And Israel April 20, 2023 Share “We all had one thing in common and that was death,” said Miami resident David Schaecter, recalling his unfathomable experience as an 11-year-old at the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Now, at 93, the Miami resident will take an emotional trip back to where his entire family was murdered during an exclusive “Holocaust to Independence” mission, hosted by Friends of the IDF (FIDF), from Wednesday, April 19th, 2023 - Thursday, April 27th, 2023 on the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the State Of Israel. This time, Schaecter will be entering the gates of Auschwitz with protectors of the Jewish people, a delegation of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Officers. “Upon witnessing my mother and sisters walk towards an open pit in the ground, I asked my brother, ‘why?’ He replied, ‘the world is standing still and doesn’t care,’” said Schaecter. “I feel that I must continue to share my story with others in order to make them understand the enormity of the Holocaust. We must continue to fight Anti-Semitism so that atrocities against the Jewish people stop once and for all." Schaecter, accompanied by fellow Holocaust Survivor Ben Midler, will join more than 80 Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) supporters from across the country, alongside a delegation of IDF soldiers, as they embark on an incredible nine-day journey of remembrance and renewal, in Poland and Israel. “From Holocaust to Independence” will bring Jewish history to life, from its darkest moments to the most triumphant, culminating in Israel’s 75th Independence Day. The Mission is part of FIDF’s Witnesses in Uniform Program, which offers soldiers a first-hand look at the unfathomable horrors of the Holocaust, leading to a new, profound understanding of their Jewish identity and heritage. One of the founders of the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach and The March Of The Living, Schaecter has made it his life’s mission to keep the memories of the six million Jews murdered alive. As the number of survivors continues to dwindle, Schaecter says, he considers his extraordinary vigor a gift that allows him to continue telling his story to a new generation of young people. "I look in their eyes and tell them three things: No. 1, they need to hear me; No. 2, they need to understand and No. 3, the most important, I need them to be my mouthpiece when I am no longer here.” A film was produced in 2018 about his life, “A Call To Remember: The David Schaecter Story” and recently, hours of his story were recorded for an interactive exhibit slated to open in a museum in Boston in 2025. Schaecter was born in Czechoslovakia in 1929 in the Tokai Mountains area close to the Czech/Hungarian border. In April 1940, his father was taken to Auschwitz and a year later, he and the rest of his family were also sent to Auschwitz. All 105 members of his family perished. He arrived in the United States in January 1950 at the age of 20 and registered at the University Of Colorado in Boulder. He later transferred to UCLA and graduated with a Degree in Industrial Engineering. A British-American family hired him to develop and grow two different branches of their business. They eventually transferred him to Miami in 1956. After two years in Miami, Schaecter started his own company and found great success. He has been married to his second wife, Sydney, since 2005. He has two adult children, five adult grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The upcoming mission will begin in Krakow, Poland and participants will visit the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, where more than one million people were systematically starved, tortured and murdered between 1941-1945. They will visit the Zbylitowska Gora Village and Buczyna Forest to retrace the steps where more than 800 children were executed by the Nazis, and continue to the Kupa Synagogue, the Jewish Quarter in the Old City Of Krakow and on to the Krakow Jewish Ghetto. The group will then fly to Israel where they will have the opportunity to attend the National Memorial Ceremony dedicated to fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism at the Kotel with state officials including Israel’s President and the IDF Chief of Staff. The group will visit IDF bases, meet soldiers serving on Israel’s front lines and commanders in elite units, commemorate Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terror and to celebrate Israel’s 75th Independence Day with those who ensure Israel’s safety and its future existence. “During this historic mission on Israel’s 75th Anniversary, we’ll celebrate the story of Jewish courage – from near annihilation to the triumph of establishing the State Of Israel," said Steve Weil CEO Of FIDF. “When we march tall and proud through the gates of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Camps, together with Holocaust Survivors, FIDF supporters and Israeli officers in uniform, gratefully flying the Israeli flag, we will send a clear message: We are here, we will never forget and we will do whatever we must do to protect our country and our people to guarantee – Never Again.” Friends Of The Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) FIDF was established in 1981 by a group of Holocaust Survivors as a 501(C)(3) Not-For-Profit Organization with the mission of transforming the lives of the young men and women of the IDF who protect Israel and Jews worldwide through empowering educational, financial, well-being and cultural initiatives. With 24 chapters throughout the United States, FIDF proudly supports soldiers before, during and after their service, as well as families of fallen soldiers and wounded veterans, reinforcing the vital bond between the communities in the United States and the soldiers of the IDF. - Anchors Away - For The Nation’s Largest LGBTQ+ Pride-On-Water Event | sun-times
Anchors Away - For The Nation’s Largest LGBTQ+ Pride-On-Water Event South Florida Sun Times Apr 2, 2026 FLoatarama, A NonProfit Organization Dedicated To Uplifting LGBTQ+ Youth In South Florida, Announced That Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood Will Return As The Proud Presenting Sponsor Of Its Signature Fundraiser, Now Recognized As The Nation’s Largest Pride-On-The-Water Celebration. This seventh Annual Floatarama, which celebrates unity, visibility and inclusion while raising critical funds for LGBTQ+ youth-serving organizations, will take place on Saturday, June 13th, 2026 along Fort Lauderdale’s iconic Intracoastal waterway. More than 500 celebrants will set sail aboard the luxurious Sun Dream Yacht Catalina for an unforgettable 2.5-hour brunch cruise featuring a live DJ, premium open bar and high-energy entertainment. The voyage will be followed by a waterfront T-Dance celebration — all to benefit the FLoatarama LGBTQ Youth Fund, which supports a multitude of South Florida organizations serving LGBTQ+ youth. “At a moment when federal and state funding for inclusive initiatives has been drastically reduced, many vital organizations in South Florida are facing unprecedented challenges. That’s why FLoatarama’s LGBTQ Youth Fund matters now more than ever. We’re helping sustain programs that support LGBTQ youth amid an environment of shrinking government resources,” said Scott Schramm, President of FLoatarama. “We knew we had to do something, and we may as well have fun doing it.” Last year alone, FLoatarama awarded $160,000 in Grants to 12 NonProfit Organizations providing critical support services to the one-in-five youth in South Florida who identify as LGBTQ+. Since its inception in 2021, the event has distributed more than $410,000 in grants. “Our ongoing partnership with FLoatarama reflects Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood’s commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community year-round,” said Erick Eldridge, Director of Special Events, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. “Through sponsorships, inclusive workplace practices and participation in LGBTQ+ initiatives across South Florida, we proudly stand for equality, representation and love in all its forms. We are honored to support FLoatarama’s mission to make a meaningful impact on the lives of LGBTQ+ youth.” Not your typical dull NonProfit Supported by an all-volunteer board, FLoatarama is no ordinary NonProfit. With the motto #HaveFunDoGood, it is more akin to a social club that puts the fun in fundraising. At the core of the organization is the Founder’s Club, comprised of generous donors who share an interest in fostering philanthropy within LGBTQ community. Annual membership contributions allow for FLoatarama Founder’s Club members to attend a series of captivating social events throughout the year, but the can’t-miss event is always the signature pride-on-the-water spectacle during Pride Month each June. There are no paid staff and minimal overhead expenses so 100% of proceeds flow directly back to FLoatarama’s LGBTQ Youth Fund, managed by the nonprofit’s philanthropy partner, The Our Fund Foundation, South Florida’s only LGBTQ+ community foundation. The LGBTQ Youth Fund provides grants to organizations delivering essential services such as mental health support, housing assistance, healthcare access and leadership development programs for LGBTQ+ youth. For a list of previous Grant recipients, visit: https://floatarama.org/impact “As corporations and previous funding sources rescind prior financial support, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s generosity has been a beacon of hope, allowing us to fund even more vital programs for LGBTQ+ youth in our community during this challenging time,” said Roderick MacKenzie, Vice President and Treasurer of FLoatarama. A Day of Celebration on the Water The festivities begin at 10:00 a.m. at Bokamper’s Sports Bar & Grill’s spacious Intracoastal dock, where guests will enjoy a complimentary pre-departure mimosa bar sponsored by The Our Fund Foundation and a live performance from the South Florida Pride Jazz Band. Attendees will also receive an exclusive, custom-designed FLoatarama T-shirt. At 11:00 a.m. FLoatarama will launch the 2.5-hour brunch cruise featuring a premium open bar, a delectable brunch spread, and beats by local favorite DJ Trevor Oldroyd. Drinks will be served by the talented team from Hunter’s Nightclub, ensuring a top-tier experience from bow to stern. When the yacht returns to dock, the celebration continues with an exclusive waterfront T-Dance on Bokamper’s expansive patio, with high-energy music carrying the party into the afternoon. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino will also host a vibrant on-site activation, inviting guests to step inside a rainbow-themed acrylic replica of its iconic Guitar Hotel for keepsake photos.
