Also, the project will incorporate public art installations, sponsorship opportunities, special events and a virtual legacy wall where families can honor loved ones who have served. Inspired by the poppy’s historical significance as a symbol of sacrifice, rooted in the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields,” and later adopted as a national emblem of remembrance, The Poppy Project brings this tradition to life in a local and meaningful way. Funds raised will directly support Henderson Behavioral Health’s VICTORY Program (Veterans in Counseling to Obtain Recovery), which provides free Mental Health services to veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and their families, including outreach and education across South Florida, workshops addressing mental health challenges impacting military families, and individual and relationship therapy offered both in clinical settings and within the community. Since 2023, Henderson Behavioral Health has served hundreds of veterans, including more than 250 in 2025 alone, reflecting the growing demand for accessible, high-quality mental health care. As a vital safety net within the community, the organization continues to see increasing demand for veteran-focused services, highlighting the need for continued resources to support and expand access to care. Ronik added, “Florida is home to more than 1.3 million veterans, one of the largest veteran populations in the nation, reinforcing the importance of initiatives like The Poppy Project in building awareness, fostering connection and expanding access to care.” The Thursday, May 21st, 2026 kickoff event at Tunnel Top Plaza is free and open to the public. Featuring A Steel Beam Recovered From The Rubble Of The World Trade Center, The Tour Will Travel Across The Country To Unite Communities In Remembrance, Reflection, And Resolve – Reaffirming The Promise America Made To Never Forget. “This steel beam represents the best of who we are as a country,” said Frank Siller, Tunnel to Towers Foundation Chairman and CEO. “As it travels from coast to coast, we hope this symbol brings communities together to remember the heroes we lost, honor the people still suffering from 9/11-related illnesses, support the families forever changed, and pay tribute to those who continue to protect and serve. Together, we must Never Forget.” Steel Across America officially launched on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026, near Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan. Across more than 10,500 miles, the steel will make more than 35 stops in 21 states and Washington, D.C., visiting landmark locations, community gathering places, town squares, and major sporting events nationwide before culminating in its return to Ground Zero on September 11th on the 25th Anniversary of 9/11. At the heart of Steel Across America is a powerful and historic tribute: a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center’s South Tower that will be carried from city to city as a lasting memorial. This sacred artifact will journey through communities and neighborhoods, inviting everyone to gather in shared remembrance, pay tribute to the heroes who answered the call on 9/11, and honor those who continue to serve our nation every day. The steel exhibition will be accessible to the public via open exhibitions at national monuments, museums, and memorials across the country, including at the Flight 93 National Memorial (Stoystown, Pennsylvania), the USS Alabama (Mobile, Alabama), the Space Center Houston (Houston, Texas) and Mount Rushmore National Memorial (Keystone, South Dakota). The tour will also visit Major League Baseball stadiums including loanDepot Park (Miami, Florida), T-Mobile Park (Seattle, Washington), and Busch Stadium (St. Louis, Missouri). The steel will also stop at the Emma E. Booker Elementary School (Sarasota Florida), where President George W. Bush was visiting on 9/11 when he first learned about the attacks. At public tour stops, visitors will be able to view the 9/11 steel up close, connect with individuals who lived through the tragic events, engage in meaningful educational experiences through the Foundation’s 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit, and more. City stops are listed below, and additional details regarding public tour events will be announced at a later date. Steel Across America is a tribute to a defining moment in American history. The steel, which was recovered by thousands of first responders who rushed to Ground Zero in the days following the attacks, stands as a symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and our unbreakable spirit that emerged from tragedy. For the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, this journey is deeply personal. The steel is an everlasting reminder of the selfless courage and service of first responders, including New York City firefighter Stephen Siller, who gave his life on September 11, 2001, along with so many other first responders. - Florida's Protein Squeeze - Families Cut Beef, Shrink Portions And Serve More Meat-Free Meals. | sun-times
Florida's Protein Squeeze - Families Cut Beef, Shrink Portions And Serve More Meat-Free Meals. South Florida Sun Times Aug 27, 2026 Recent Reports Have Highlighted How Rising Grocery Prices Are Forcing Families To Cut Back On Fresh Fruit And Vegetables. However, New Research Suggests That Households Are Buying Less Animal Protein, Instead Switching To Plant-Based Sources, Cheaper Alternatives Or Serving Smaller Portions. That is according to a survey of 3,042 households commissioned by MarketBeat, a financial media company, which found that 69% have lowered the amount or type of meat, seafood or dairy they purchase because of rising grocery prices over the past 12 months. This means that 6,039,439 Florida households are cutting protein. Animal protein sits at the center of both the household grocery budget and the wider consumer economy. Meat and seafood are among the more expensive essentials Americans purchase each week, meaning they are often among the first items to be swapped, stretched, downgraded or reduced when prices rise. “For many people, meat and seafood have traditionally been treated as a basic part of the weekly grocery shopping, but these findings show that many households are now approaching it as an expense that must be carefully managed,” says Matt Paulson, Founder of MarketBeat. “Families are doing more than changing brands. They are changing what they eat, how often they eat it and how much they put on the plate.” Beef Is Taking the Biggest Hit Beef is by far the protein source that Florida households have cut back on the most. Among respondents, 43% identified beef as the main protein they had reduced, compared with 10% who selected fish or seafood and 8% who named chicken or turkey, followed by pork at 8% and dairy at 7%. The findings suggest that households are not abandoning animal protein altogether but are becoming more selective, particularly with higher-priced products such as beef and seafood. Nearly half of respondents (47%) said their household had replaced beef with a vegetarian protein source, such as beans or lentils, because of price increases. “Beef has become one of the first places families feel pressure in the protein budget,” Paulson says. “When prices rise, people reduce or replace. The fact that almost half have switched from beef to a vegetarian alternative shows how quickly an everyday purchase can become an occasional one.” Meat-Free Meals Are Becoming a Money-Saving Strategy Serving meals without meat or fish has become a regular cost-saving measure for many households in the Sunshine State. More than half of respondents (51%) said their household now serves a meal without meat or fish at least twice a week, specifically to save money. This includes 10% who do so every day, 13% who serve meat-free or fish-free meals four to six times per week and 28% who do so two or three times per week. A further 16% serve such a meal once per week, while 11% do so less frequently. Only 22% said they never serve a meal without meat or fish specifically for financial reasons. The results suggest that what may once have been an occasional dietary choice is increasingly becoming a routine budgeting strategy. “For many families, a meat-free meal is less about preference and more about making the grocery budget stretch,” Paulson continues. “When that happens several times a week, it starts to look like a real change in how people eat.” Some Adults Are Giving Up Their Own Portions The financial pressure surrounding meat and seafood is also affecting how food is divided within households. More than half of respondents (58%) said they had personally eaten a smaller portion or skipped a protein-rich food so their children or another household member could have more. This finding illustrates that the protein squeeze is not simply changing shopping lists. In many households, it influences who eats what once the groceries reach the table. Matt Paulson says: “This may be the most concerning finding in the survey. People are not only changing what they buy. Many are eating less themselves so someone else in the household can have more. That shows how much grocery prices are affecting everyday life around the family dinner table.” Eggs Are the Most Common Budget Fallback When Floridians need a more affordable protein alternative, eggs are the most popular option. Almost one-quarter of respondents (24%) named eggs as their household’s main budget fallback. Processed meats such as hot dogs or deli meat followed at 13%, while 12% selected beans. Canned tuna or other canned fish was chosen by 9%, followed by peanut butter at 8%, dairy products at 4%, protein powder at 3%, and lentils at 2%. Another 24% said their household did not have a regular budget to fall back on. “Households are becoming increasingly resourceful,” Paulson says. “Eggs, beans, canned fish and peanut butter can all help stretch a budget, but the need for a regular backup plan also shows that many families can no longer rely on buying their preferred protein from one week to the next.” Weekly Discounts Are Dictating What Families Eat For many Florida parents, the decision over what protein to purchase is now driven primarily by supermarket promotions rather than personal preference or meal planning. Seven in ten parents (70%) said they now decide what protein to buy mainly based on what is discounted that week. This reliance on promotions may help households maintain some variety, but it also suggests that consumers are becoming more exposed to changing prices and less able to purchase the same foods consistently. As households move between discounted cuts of meat, canned foods, eggs and plant-based alternatives, protein choices are increasingly being determined in the grocery aisle rather than before the shopping trip begins. “Weekly sales are having a bigger influence on what families put on the table,” Paulson adds. “More people are planning meals around what is affordable instead of what they would normally prefer to eat. That is a pretty clear sign that household budgets are getting tighter.” Animal Protein Is Starting to Feel Like a Luxury Two-thirds of respondents (67%) said rising prices had made meat, seafood and dairy feel more like a luxury than a basic grocery item. The finding reflects how foods traditionally seen as everyday staples can gradually become discretionary purchases when household budgets are stretched. Rather than asking which meat, fish or dairy product they prefer, many shoppers are now asking whether they can afford to include it at all. The strain is also reaching beyond shopping decisions. Nearly one-third of respondents, 32%, said disagreements about grocery spending had increased within their household because of the cost of meat, fish and dairy. - Aventura To Get A Taste Of Happea's This November - Beloved Brickell-Born Mediterranean Concept To Bring Its Signature Food, Hospitality And Social Media-Fueled Energy To Miami-Dade County’s Northernmost City | sun-times
Aventura To Get A Taste Of Happea's This November - Beloved Brickell-Born Mediterranean Concept To Bring Its Signature Food, Hospitality And Social Media-Fueled Energy To Miami-Dade County’s Northernmost City Jewish Connection News Oct 22, 2026 For Aventura Residents Danny Omari And Eduardo Wainberg, The Opening Of Happea’s Mediterranean Grill This November 2026 Marks A Full-Circle Moment For The Family (Brothers-In-Law) And Business Partners. Happea’s Was Born In Brickell, Where The Duo Opened Their First Location In July 2022 And Quickly Built An Organic Loyal Following Both In The Neighborhood And Across Social Media. Now, Fueled By The Support Of Their Brickell Guests And A Growing Digital Audience, The Pair Is Bringing Happea’s To The City They And Their Families Call Home. The New Location At 2749 Northeast 193th Street, Unit 20, Aventura, Florida 33180 Will Serve As The Concept’s Flagship, Offering The Same Made-From-Scratch, Health-Minded Mediterranean Fare And Hospitality-Driven Mindset In A Larger, Technology-Forward Space Designed Around Quality Food, Comfort And Community. “Brickell built Happea’s, and our guests there made this possible. Opening in the city our families call home is a dream come true,” explains Omari, who is no stranger to the restaurant world. His experience stretches back decades and features everything from bakeries and restaurants to nightclubs. Both savvy businessmen, the Brickell location (with the concept retrofitted to fit a smaller space) was a fabulous opportunity for them to make a move and begin building the Happea’s brand while they sought out the optimum Aventura location for Happea’s flagship. Adds Omari, “For years we’ve watched Aventura grow and evolve and waited for the right opportunity to bring Happea’s here and we couldn’t be more excited it’s finally happening.” Adds Wainberg, who is the engineering and technological yin to Omari’s hospitality yang, “In the new location we could build Happea’s as we designed it, with the space and infrastructure we think it requires to be exactly what we want it to be: certainly a great destination for delicious and honest-ingredient food but also a place of comfort, community and conversation.” Happea’s might be a fast-casual concept in its DNA but it is a neighborhood hub at heart, as much a spot to linger over lunch (and a good book) as it is perfect for a family dinner or freshly-made meal to-go. “A great deal of our success is our hummus that’s made fresh-to-order,” quips Omari, “but I believe it’s our core principles (Values, Integrity in all things and Hospitality) that has struck a chord and keeps folks coming back.” In fact, the name “Happea’s” is a play on words in two manners of speaking: the good feeling the duo want guests to have after visiting and the blessed chickpea, the golden ingredient at the heart of their unbeatable hummus, made from scratch just like nearly every item on the menu. Having set the table, let’s dig in! The Mediterranean-inspired menu features approachable, flavor-forward dishes designed to deliver the quality of a full-service dining experience within an elevated setting but with a price that never hurts and encourages repetition. Though not a “health food restaurant,” as it were, Happea’s was created to deliver deliciousness with a side of freshness and health-consciousness. “Better ingredients, Kosher meats, made-to-order hummus, seed-oil-free food and freshly prepared dishes that make you feel good after you eat them are the key to not just fine flavor but fine living,” notes Omari, who hails from a food-obsessed family, has worked in kitchens and operations and created all the recipes himself, from the protein prep to the killer sauces. The menu is multitudinous, divided into mezze, pita pockets, bowls, salads, desserts and beverages, offering everything from a quick bite to a grazing menu of shareables or a meal to-go. Standout mezze include the must-try made-to-order Hummus, Labneh, Tzatziki, Turkish Salad and Roasted Eggplant with Lemon Tahini, all served with pita. Also, Cilantro Falafel & Lemon Tahini, Marinated Roasted Beets with Feta and Pickled Red Cabbage, among others. Across all other categories the signature best sellers include: the Chicken Shawarma pocket, stuffed with hummus, pickled red cabbage, lemon tahini, mango aioli, a touch of spicy relish, Mediterranean pickles, caramelized plantain and roasted red pepper sauce; Chicken Schnitzel (be it in a pocket or a bowl); the Shakshuka Brunch bowl; the Grilled Chicken Power Bowl, which combines a quinoa and hummus base with grilled chicken, roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted sweet potato, pickled red cabbage and pita wedges; Salmon Mediterranean Bowl– six ounces of Norwegian Salmon atop organic quinoa, lemon cabbage salad and a chickpea base with fermented red cabbage, English cucumber, fried plantain, Moroccan red pepper sauce and pita wedges and The Kale salad, made with kale, quinoa, English cucumbers, za'atar, toasted sliced almonds, marinated beets, roasted sweet potato, pickled red cabbage and lemon vinaigrette. But, most would argue, the definitive dish at Happea’s is the Carnivoreishh Bowl, a glorious 81 grams of protein with Ribeye Shawarma, Beef Kebab, Chicken Shawarma, lemon tahini, hummus and mango aioli, served with caramelized onions, fermented red cabbage, Mediterranean pickles and sweet plantains. Pro tip for carb lovers, adding rice to this bowl makes it the most glorious flavor bomb around! Sweets from Happea’s are all sweetened with organic date sugar including the signature freshly-baked Dark Chocolate Cookie (consisting of Purishh chocolate protein powder and Conscious Bar Dark smooth chocolate), Tahini ice cream, and Dark Chocolate Mousse. To drink, the homemade Moroccan iced tea with dried and fresh mint leaves and Mint Lemonade are not-to-be-missed. The Aventura location will also introduce a beer and wine selection alongside a curated cocktail list, adding a new dimension to Happea’s beverage offerings From the food and equipment to the team and service, Danny and Eduardo have built the elevated concept around intention, attention and what they describe as the “energy of love,” creating an experience where hospitality and personal connection are just as important as what comes out of the kitchen. That philosophy extends into every visual detail of Happea’s, shaped by Creative Director Melanie Omari, Eduardo’s sister and Danny’s wife, whose background in film informs the brand’s distinctive approach to storytelling, composition and design. From the restaurant’s physical environment and visual elements to its digital presence, Melanie brings warmth, personality and an uncompromising attention to detail, creating spaces and experiences designed to make guests feel something beyond the pleasures of the aesthetic. Happea’s Mediterranean Grill, located at 2749 Northeast 193th Street, Unit 20, Aventura, Florida 33180 will open November 2026. Hours of operation: Monday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. For more information, visit: www.happeas.com . Follow Happea’s on Social Media: @happeas. - A Hands-On Culinary Education - Emeril Lagasse Foundation Expands Its National Culinary Education Program | sun-times
A Hands-On Culinary Education - Emeril Lagasse Foundation Expands Its National Culinary Education Program South Florida Sun Times Aug 27, 2026 Emeril Lagasse Foundation Is Expanding Its National Investment In Youth Education And Nutrition With The Selection Of Larkdale Elementary School In Lauderhill, A Suburb Of Fort Lauderdale, As Its Newest Partner For Emeril’s Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen. Larkdale Elementary, part of the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) District, will become the ninth school in the country to implement the Foundation’s signature program, an immersive model that brings together gardening, nutrition, and hands-on culinary education to transform how students learn about food and health. The program is built on four core pillars: helping students understand where food comes from, developing life skills through immersive learning, teaching the importance of nutrition and healthy eating, and building culinary skills that foster confidence and independence. Expansion into Florida marks an important step in increasing access to hands-on culinary and nutrition education opportunities nationwide. “My wife Alden and I have always believed food can open doors for young people in many ways,” said Chef Emeril Lagasse, Chairman and Co-Founder of Emeril Lagasse Foundation. “We’re proud to expand this work into Florida through our partnership with Larkdale Elementary, giving students new opportunities to build confidence, curiosity, and lifelong healthy habits.” The need for programs like Emeril’s Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen continues to grow as greater emphasis is placed on childhood nutrition, access to healthy food, and preventative healthcare. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only about 1 in 10 children in the United States consume the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables, and Childhood Obesity affects nearly 1 in 5 school-aged children. In response, the Foundation's signature program delivered 5,126 cooking, gardening, and nutrition lessons nationwide and supported schools in engaging families through 210 food-centered community events during the 2025-2026 School Year. “This partnership creates meaningful new opportunities for students at Larkdale Elementary,” said James A. Knapp, President & CEO of Broward Education Foundation. “Emeril’s Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen will give our students hands-on experiences that strengthen life skills, encourage healthier habits, and create meaningful connections between learning and everyday life.” Larkdale Elementary serves approximately 424 students, with more than 96% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. The school community faces ongoing barriers to food security and access to fresh, nutritious food. Despite these challenges, Larkdale has continued investing in experiential learning opportunities designed to strengthen both academic outcomes and student wellness, while revitalizing its garden program to support STEM instruction, environmental stewardship, and experiential learning. Emeril’s Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen represents the next step in Larkdale’s long-term vision, transforming the school’s existing spaces into a fully integrated garden-to-table learning environment where students can take ownership of the very food that strengthens them while also fostering connection to science, nutrition, wellness, and life skills. “Programs like Emeril’s Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen help schools become stronger centers for learning and connection,” said Dr. Howard Hepburn, Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools. “We are proud to provide a new opportunity that allows students to engage with education in such impactful ways.” The expansion of Emeril's Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen to South Florida was made possible through a multi-year Grant from the Humana Foundation. Beyond bringing the program to more students, the partnership will support a multi-year evaluation designed to better understand how immersive food education can improve nutrition knowledge, increase vegetable consumption, and foster lifelong healthy habits. The findings will help guide future growth of the program and strengthen the evidence supporting school-based nutrition education. “At the Humana Foundation, we believe healthier communities start with healthy children and families,” said Tiffany Benjamin, CEO of the Humana Foundation. “We're proud to support the expansion of Emeril's Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen and the opportunities it creates for students to learn, grow, and build healthy habits that can last a lifetime. We're also excited to help deepen our understanding of how hands-on food education can strengthen nutrition knowledge, encourage healthier choices, and help children thrive.” School partners awarded an Emeril’s Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen Grant receive $500,000, the Foundation’s unique curriculum, more than 100 of Chef Emeril’s recipes adapted for the classroom, gardening, and cooking education best practices, teaching materials including small-ware cooking equipment, food supplies for nutrition-focused lessons, and robust teacher training. Construction of Emeril’s Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen at Larkdale Elementary will take place over the next several months, with an estimated completion date of February 2027. Teachers are expected to begin instruction of the program curriculum at the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
