Basic First Aid For Pets: What To Know As A Pet Owner South Florida Sun Times Sep 24, 2026 When A Pet Is Injured Or Suddenly Becomes Ill, The First Few Minutes Can Make A Difference. While Basic First Aid Is Not A Replacement For Veterinary Care, It Can Help Prevent Further Harm Until A Veterinarian Can Provide Treatment. Dr. Christine Rutter, a Clinical Associate Professor at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, shares what every owner should know about basic first aid for pets and preparing for an emergency. When Should A Pet Owner Use First Aid? First aid at home should be used when a pet experiences a non-emergent (non-life-threatening) accident, injury, illness, or intoxication. Understanding the difference between when an injury is non-emergent, urgent, or an emergency can benefit you, your pet, and veterinarian. Rutter suggests owners seek immediate veterinary attention for: • Any laceration or significant wound • Bite wounds • Stings that cause pain and significant swelling • Ingestion of unknown substance or foreign bodies • Suspected or witnessed intoxication • Suspected or witnessed envenomation • Sudden weakness, collapse, or lameness • Body temperature over 104°F • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea “Recognizing the signs of an urgent situation and seeking veterinary care can make all the difference in a pet’s outcome,” Rutter said. Building A Pet First Aid Kit For injuries that can be treated at home, preparing a simple, well-organized pet first aid kit is one of the easiest ways owners can be proactive. Rutter recommends keeping these essential items on hand: • Thermometer (designated for use on the pet) • E-collar (of appropriate size to prevent licking/chewing) • Soft muzzle • Non-adherent wound dressing • Rolled gauze • Cohesive bandage • Bandage scissors • Sterile gauze pads • Hemostats, a surgical tool (clamp) used to help stop bleeding Sterile water, saline, or a commercial wound rinse is the safest way to flush wounds, and any of these would be important additions to any pet first aid kit. “You never want to flush or treat wounds with alcohol or peroxide, which can not only hurt but also inhibit healing,” Rutter said. First aid kits can also help owners respond quickly and safely when emergencies happen, providing temporary care to help stabilize a pet and prevent further harm until they can reach a veterinarian. What To Do If Your Pet Has A Wound When an animal is wounded, owners may need to assess the open cut to determine whether it is minor or should be seen by a veterinarian. Any questions should prompt a visit to your veterinarian, according to Rutter. Before assessing a wound, owners should remember that any injured pet may bite and, therefore, should always use caution when approaching an injured animal. Pets should be properly restrained with an E-collar or muzzle, when possible, to protect both the animal and the person providing first aid. “Because animals may be fearful, defensive, or aggressive after a serious injury, it is always best to prioritize your safety and then their comfort,” Rutter said. “An E-collar, blanket, leash, or muzzle can help keep both you and your pet safe while you prepare to seek veterinary care. Preventing bites and protecting human safety should always come first.” These kinds of restraints can also prevent wound licking, which is a common instinct pets use to comfort and clean themselves. Excessive licking can cause additional trauma, delay healing, and introduce bacteria into the wound. After the pet is restrained, owners should examine the wound. If the fur around the wound is long, it may be carefully trimmed with bandage scissors, taking care to avoid the skin. To prevent nicking any skin, trim slowly and carefully— only using bandage scissors, Rutter said. Next, the wound should be rinsed with sterile water, saline, or commercial wound rinse before being covered with non-adherent dressing, soft gauze, and cohesive wrap. Owners should then seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Wounds such as animal bites, lacerations, or fractures should be treated immediately by a veterinarian. Before administering any medication, talk to a veterinarian, or schedule an appointment if the wound appears less severe. “Some medications that you may have at home can interfere with what your veterinarian needs to prescribe, so please don’t administer medications without a veterinarian’s direct supervision,” Rutter said. What To Do If Your Pet Is Poisoned Another common emergency pet owners may encounter is suspected poisoning when a pet eats something toxic; in these cases, owners should take a photo of any remaining material and contact ASPCA Poison Control at: 1 (888) 426-4435. Or go directly to a veterinarian. In these moments, quick action paired with clear information is critical. “Take a photo or get samples of any ingested plants or mushrooms,” Rutter said. “I don’t recommend inducing vomiting at home. Your veterinarian has a lot safer ways to induce vomiting (if indicated) than what is available at home.” Any substance ingested should be documented: accurate information such as how many pills were in the bottle, how many are missing, or if a substance was accidentally dropped allows the veterinary team to determine the safest and most effective treatment. “We see accidental recreational medication ingestion all the time. We won’t report you. We just treat your pet," Rutter said. Additionally, if an animal is bitten or stung by a snake or insect, taking a photo of the reptile or bug can also help veterinarians determine care for the pet. You don’t need to bring the offending creature that stung or bit your pet into the ER. A photo will do just fine. “When in doubt, call Poison Control, take photos, and be honest,” Rutter said. “Preparation and awareness can help your veterinarian respond more effectively.” Handling An Injured Pet Safely transporting an injured pet means keeping them in a secure, controlled space where they cannot fall or sustain additional injuries. It’s also important to consider any other animals in the household. Rutter says it is best to leave other pets at home while going to the veterinarian’s office to reduce stress and avoid potential complications. By combining safe handling, calm transport, and the right protective tools, you can stabilize your pet while you seek professional help. Ultimately, Rutter reminds pet parents that the best first aid is preparation. Keeping essential supplies on hand and talking with your veterinarian about emergency care before a crisis occurs can help ensure you are ready to act quickly when your pet needs you most. - These Are Florida’s 3 Most Envied Places For First-Time Buyers | sun-times
These Are Florida’s 3 Most Envied Places For First-Time Buyers South Florida Sun Times Sep 24, 2026 For Many Americans, Buying A First Home Is No Longer About Finding The Perfect Neighborhood. Increasingly, It Is About Finding A Place Where The Numbers Actually Work. Higher home prices, elevated borrowing costs and limited housing supply have pushed the traditional starter home further out of reach, leaving would-be buyers to make choices that previous generations may not have faced quite so sharply: a smaller house, a longer commute, a less fashionable ZIP code or a move to somewhere entirely different. To find out where first-time buyers would most like to put down roots, www.PortlandRealEstate.com polled 3,034 prospective first-time buyers, asking them to identify the location in their state they most envy as a place to buy their first home. The top 3 most envied locations among Florida first-time buyers are: #1. Lakeland Located between Tampa and Orlando, Lakeland gives first-time buyers access to two major employment regions while maintaining an identity of its own. The city’s lakes, established neighborhoods and growing downtown add lifestyle appeal, while prices can still compare favorably with those in either larger metro. That central location can also mean long commutes and increasing competition as more buyers look inland for value. Lakeland stands out as a practical middle ground for those seeking opportunity without paying full Tampa or Orlando prices. #2. Melbourne Space Coast employment and an established coastal lifestyle make Melbourne an attractive option for buyers thinking about both quality of life and long-term value. Aerospace, defense and technology jobs support the local economy, while beaches and everyday amenities add to the city’s appeal. First-time buyers may need to stretch their budgets, accept rising insurance costs or look farther inland for a suitable property. Despite those pressures, Melbourne continues to offer a compelling blend of career opportunity and Florida coastal living. #3. Lake City For buyers trying to avoid the steep prices found in Florida’s larger metros and coastal markets, Lake City offers a more attainable place to begin. Its position near the junction of Interstates 75 and 10 gives residents useful regional access, while housing costs can remain comparatively manageable. The trade-off is a smaller local job market and fewer big-city amenities. Even so, Lake City appeals to first-time buyers willing to exchange metropolitan convenience for affordability and a slower pace. Across the country, top choices in other states included... Riverfront scenery, outdoor recreation and a revitalized downtown make Chattanooga Tennessee first-time buyers’ most envied location. The city’s growing technology, manufacturing and tourism sectors strengthen its long-term prospects, while its neighborhoods offer more character and variety than many conventional suburban markets. Rising demand has made well-located starter homes increasingly competitive, however, and buyers may need to settle for a smaller property or look farther from downtown. Chattanooga remains coveted because it combines natural beauty, economic momentum and a lively urban core. Over in nearby South Carolina, the Charleston metro has made Summerville a popular choice for local buyers seeking more space and better value than they may find closer to the coast. Its historic center, walkable neighborhoods and access to major employment corridors strengthen both its lifestyle and investment appeal. The compromise is often a lengthy commute, heavy traffic and rising prices as demand spreads outward from Charleston. Even so, Summerville offers a practical foothold in one of South Carolina’s most competitive regions. Texas first-time buyers named New Braunfels as their most coveted location. Hill Country scenery, river recreation and a lively historic center make New Braunfels one of Texas’ most appealing lifestyle markets. Its position between Austin and San Antonio also gives buyers access to two major employment regions while retaining a strong identity of its own. That popularity has driven prices higher, however, and first-time buyers may need to accept a smaller home, a longer commute, or a location farther from the city center. New Braunfels remains coveted because it combines small-city character with strong long-term demand. In a state where affordable starter homes are increasingly difficult to find, Bakersfield in California emerged as the top choice in the state - it remains one of the more accessible options within a major metropolitan area. Buyers can often secure more space for their money than they would in California’s coastal markets, making the city especially attractive to those focused on getting into the housing market sooner. The trade-off is distance from many of the state’s biggest job centers, along with intense summer heat. For first-time buyers willing to look inland, Bakersfield shows how California affordability has increasingly become a Central Valley story. Kingston in New York emerged as a surprise choice among first-time buyers in the state. Hudson Valley character, a growing arts scene, and access to both the Catskills and New York City have made Kingston increasingly desirable. Its historic districts, independent businesses and walkable pockets offer the kind of lifestyle appeal that draws buyers looking beyond conventional suburbs. That popularity has pushed prices higher, however, and first-time buyers may need to consider a smaller home, renovation work, or a location farther from the most sought-after areas. Kingston remains coveted because it combines cultural energy with a distinctive upstate setting. Among Colorado’s larger cities, Pueblo remains one of the most attainable places for first-time buyers, and it came in as the top pick there. Housing costs are generally lower than in Denver and Colorado Springs, allowing purchasers to secure more space without stretching their finances quite as far. The trade-off is a weaker local job market and greater distance from the state’s biggest employment centers. Even so, Pueblo offers a realistic foothold in Colorado for buyers willing to exchange metro momentum for affordability. Affordability Matters When respondents were asked for the single biggest factor that would make a ZIP code appealing for their first home, price came first, at 30%. The remaining priorities were: • 15% - Being close to family and friends • 10% – Good schools • 9% – Attractive homes or neighborhood character • 9% – A short commute or access to jobs • 7% – Walkability • 7% – Restaurants, shops, and entertainment • 7% – Potential for property values to rise • 6% – Parks and outdoor spaces The findings suggest that the first-home calculation is dominated by two fairly basic questions: Can I afford to live here, and will I feel comfortable living here? Traditional markers of a “desirable” neighborhood. Restaurants, walkability, good schools, and attractive streets still matter. Buyers Are Prepared to Give Up Space Getting onto the market also appears to require some prioritizing. Asked what they would sacrifice to make their first home affordable, 17% said property size, making square footage the most expendable feature on the list. Lifestyle amenities were not far behind. 12% would give up easy access to restaurants and entertainment, while another 12% would accept a longer commute. Other compromises included: • 12% - Living farther from family and friends • 10% - Having fewer bedrooms • 9% - Giving up walkability • 8% - Having less yard or outdoor space • 8% - Compromising on the quality of local schools • 7% - Buying in a less desirable neighborhood • 7% - Accepting a property in worse condition In other words, the dream has not disappeared, but it is getting smaller, sometimes quite literally. For many buyers, the first home is increasingly viewed as exactly that: a first home, rather than the property expected to tick every box for the next 20 years. Smaller Towns Are Winning the Reality Check Perhaps the clearest sign of how the market has changed came when prospective buyers were asked what kind of location they would realistically consider. The most popular response was not an urban neighborhood or a traditional suburb. Instead, 27% said they would consider buying in a smaller town or rural area. Another 23% would choose a smaller property if it meant securing a home in a desirable neighborhood, while 19% would move to a suburb farther from the city. Other options attracted smaller shares: • 10% would buy a fixer-upper in a better location. • 9% would choose a condo or apartment instead of a house. • 6% would buy in an up-and-coming neighborhood. • 6% would accept a larger property in a less desirable neighborhood. “Buying a first home is still one of the most important financial milestones people can reach, and what these results show is that buyers are becoming much more open-minded about where that first step might happen,” says a spokesperson from: www.PortlandRealEstate.com . “There are fantastic places to buy across the country that may not always be the obvious names. For first-time buyers, the key is not necessarily finding a home that ticks every box on day one. It is finding somewhere that works for your budget, gives you a lifestyle you can enjoy and allows you to start building equity. A first home is a starting point, and getting onto the market can open up far more choices in the years ahead.” For more information, visit: https://www.portlandrealestate.com/blog/starter-home-survey/ To find out where first-time buyers would most like to put down roots, a recent survey polled 3,034 prospective first-time buyers. - Acclaimed Pianist Emmet Cohen - Releases Single “Well You Needn’t” | sun-times
Acclaimed Pianist Emmet Cohen - Releases Single “Well You Needn’t” Jewish Connection News Apr 23, 2026 This Month, Acclaimed Pianist, Composer, And Bandleader Emmet Cohen Released His Rendition Of “Well You Needn’t,” The Lead Single From His Upcoming Album Universal Truth (Out May 29 Via Mack Avenue Records). Emmet Brings A Swinging Take On The Thelonious Monk Composition Alongside Jazz Royalty Ron Carter (Bass), Jeremy Pelt (Trumpet) And Joe Farnsworth (Drums). Recorded In Celebration Of The 2026 Centennial Year Of Miles Davis And John Coltrane, Universal Truth Honors The Pianist’s Forebears By Carrying Forward Their Spirit Of Personal And Spiritual Discovery In His Own Distinctive Style. Solidifying His Reputation As The Hardest Working Man In Jazz, Cohen Kicks Off His 10‑Month International Tour Including The Thursday, April 30Th 2026 International Jazz Day Celebration In Chicago With Herbie Hancock. Widely regarded as one of the leading pianists of his generation, Emmet Cohen has built his reputation on bridging Jazz’s storied lineage with a deeply communal, modern approach. From his collection of Masters Legacy Series recordings—featuring icons including Jimmy Cobb, Benny Golson, Albert “Tootie” Heath, and Houston Person—to his widely popular livestream series Live From Emmet’s Place, Cohen has consistently emphasized connection across generations and audiences. Universal Truth features classic tunes associated with the album’s twin inspirations of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, carefully curated through Cohen’s personal connection with the repertoire. For the album’s rendition of “My Funny Valentine,” Cohen brought together bassist Ron Carter and tenor saxophonist George Coleman for a poignant reunion, more than sixty years after they performed on the Miles Davis album of the same name at Lincoln Center’s Philharmonic Hall. The rhythm section for the album is Cohen’s trio with bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Joe Farnsworth, who kick off the proceedings with a taut reduction of Davis and Bud Powell’s “Budo” from The Birth of the Cool. Carter takes over the bass duties for a brisk dash through Monk’s “Well You Needn’t,” with Jeremy Pelt contributing a blistering trumpet solo. Pelt and Carter are also featured on “Gingerbread Boy,” the classic composition by Jimmy Heath - who also would have celebrated his 100th this year. The album concludes with Coltrane’s “Blue Trane,” with the twin tenors of Coleman and Tivon Pennicott joining Pelt and the trio for a rollicking excursion through the landmark tune. The centerpiece of Universal Truth is Cohen’s titular suite, an ambitious three-part composition that is as deeply personal and revelatory as anything that he has conjured to date. “In all my research and study into John Coltrane, one phrase always stuck out,” Cohen explains. “‘Universal Truth.’ When Trane talked about his artistry and his calling, his intention was always to seek that universal truth. I interpret that to mean his higher power, his version of God, his connection to the source that connects and calls to every living thing on Earth.” With Universal Truth, Emmet Cohen celebrates the great discoveries of past masters by making his own search for the endless revelations contained within those simple, profound, vast universal truths.
