Swim For Jenny Week YMCA Of South Florida Offers Free Swim Lessons For All South Florida Sun Times Mar 20, 2025 Every Year, As The Sun Shines Down On South Florida, Families Flock To Beaches, Pools And Water Parks To Enjoy The Warm Climate And Vibrant Aquatic Culture. However, This Picturesque Setting Belies A Harsh Reality: Florida Holds The Unfortunate Distinction Of Having The Highest Childhood Drowning Rate In The Country. With Drowning Standing As The Leading Cause Of Death For Children Ages One To Four, The Need For Accessible Swim Education Is More Urgent Than Ever. To combat this crisis, the YMCA of South Florida has been a steadfast champion of water safety, leading one of the most comprehensive drowning prevention initiatives in the region. Their annual "Swim for Jenny" Week, a program dedicated to offering free swim lessons, aims to equip individuals of all ages with life-saving skills. This year’s event, generously funded by Nicklaus Children’s Health System, will take place from March 24th - March 28th at multiple YMCA locations, including Fort Lauderdale (L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center), Hallandale, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines and Weston. A Tragic Inspiration Turned Life-Saving Initiative The initiative was born from tragedy. In 2011, Jenny, a young girl from South Florida, lost her life to drowning simply because she never had the opportunity to learn how to swim. Devastated by the loss but determined to prevent further tragedies, the YMCA of South Florida launched "Swim for Jenny" in 2013. Since then, the program has reached more than 25,000 people and provided over 100,000 swim lessons, making a tangible impact on water safety in the community. “Swim for Jenny” is more than just a free swim program; it is a movement towards a safer community. “The need for accessible and affordable swim lessons is greater than ever as drowning remains the leading cause of death for young children,” said YMCA of South Florida President and CEO Sheryl A. Woods. “Swim lessons are critically important for ensuring that our kids are safe, particularly here in South Florida where we are practically surrounded by water. It’s been proven that children who receive formal swim instruction are 88% less likely to drown and this is why ‘Swim for Jenny’ has enabled us to positively affect tens of thousands of people in our communities by facilitating these life-saving lessons.” A Community Call to Action Last year, Florida reported 101 fatal child drownings, with Miami-Dade and Broward counties leading the nation in these heartbreaking statistics. For every child who drowns, seven more receive emergency care for nonfatal submersion injuries. The YMCA of South Florida understands that swim education is not a luxury but a necessity, particularly in a region encircled by beaches, lakes and pools. Through “Swim for Jenny” Week, families have an opportunity to take proactive steps to prevent drownings. The free swim lessons cover essential skills such as floating, treading water, basic strokes and how to safely enter and exit the water. The program welcomes participants of all ages and skill levels, reinforcing the notion that it is never too early—or too late—to learn how to swim. For parents, this initiative offers peace of mind. “It’s terrifying to think that one misstep near a pool can turn into a tragedy,” says Maria Gomez, a mother of three from Hollywood, Florida, whose children participated in the program last year. “Thanks to ‘Swim for Jenny,’ my kids now have the skills to keep themselves safe in the water. This program is truly life-changing.” A Partnership in Prevention The YMCA of South Florida could not carry out this life-saving mission without the generosity of its community partners. Nicklaus Children’s Health System has played a crucial role in making the program a reality by funding “Swim for Jenny,” ensuring that no family is turned away due to financial constraints. “Children’s health and safety are at the core of what we do,” said a spokesperson for Nicklaus Children’s Health System. “Partnering with the YMCA for ‘Swim for Jenny’ aligns perfectly with our mission to protect and support the well-being of our youngest community members. We’re honored to help provide children and families with the tools they need to stay safe in and around the water.” How to Participate Registration for free swim lessons through “Swim for Jenny” is now open, and families are encouraged to take advantage of this crucial program. To sign up, visit: https://ymcasouthflorida.org/swim-for-jenny . Spaces are limited, so early registration is recommended. Beyond “Swim for Jenny” Week, the YMCA of South Florida offers year-round swim instruction, drowning prevention courses and lifeguard training to ensure water safety remains a priority throughout the community. The YMCA’s Commitment to South Florida For over a century, the YMCA has been a cornerstone of community life in South Florida, providing services that strengthen individuals and families alike. As an award-winning nonprofit organization, the Y operates more than 200 programs designed to enhance the well-being of people of all ages. From state-of-the-art fitness centers to holistic wellness initiatives, summer camps, and after-school care, the YMCA is committed to fostering a healthier, safer and more connected community. The organization’s dedication to water safety is just one facet of its broader mission to serve and uplift the South Florida community. By expanding access to essential programs like “Swim for Jenny,” the YMCA continues to make a profound difference in the lives of thousands. By embracing water safety education and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn to swim, South Florida can turn the tide on this crisis. The message is clear: swim lessons save lives. And thanks to “Swim for Jenny,” those lessons are available to everyone. Join the movement by connecting with us on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Or: https://ymcasouthflorida.org/ Previous Next

Dock Dreams - 3 Florida Lakefront Locations Are Luring Second-Home Buyers Nationwide Aventura Digest Jul 18, 2025 There’s Something Timeless About The Allure Of A Lakefront Home In Summer. For Many People, It’s The Ultimate Escape - Where Mornings Start With Coffee On The Dock And Days End In Golden-Hour Swims. Lakefront Homes Have Long Ranked Among The Most Desirable Types Of Second Properties In North America - And The Numbers Back It Up - Waterfront Properties Can Command A 36% Price Premium On Average, According To Zillow. Calgary Homes, a real estate platform, carried out a survey of 3,007 Americans and Canadians to identify the most sought-after lakefront real estate in North America. The top 10 were as follows: #1. Big Bear Lake, California Perched in the San Bernardino Mountains and just a few hours from Los Angeles, Big Bear Lake is a four-season favorite. Neighborhoods like Boulder Bay offer classic A-frames and modern homes, many with easy access to trails, town, and lakefront views. The blend of walkability and alpine charm makes it a consistent pick for second-home buyers. #2. Lake Tahoe, California Lake Tahoe is a year-round dream with crystal-clear water and a mix of forest hideaways and luxury retreats. On the California side, places like Carnelian Bay and Rubicon Bay offer direct water access, with homes often passed down for generations. Whether it’s a sleek modern cabin or a grand lakefront lodge, property here is scarce and moves quickly — Tahoe isn’t just seasonal, it’s a lifestyle. #3. Shasta Lake, California As one of California’s largest reservoirs, Shasta Lake has a wilder, more remote feel. Properties here often sit above the shoreline with sweeping views of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Because of water level fluctuations, many homes are built with adaptable features like hillside paths and extended docks. It’s ideal for those who want space, solitude, and serious boating access. #4. Tracadie Bay, Prince Edward Island Though tidal, Tracadie Bay feels like a lake - calm, scenic, and low-traffic. Shoreline homes around Brackley and Blooming Point offer privacy, beach views, and quick access to Charlottetown. Most are custom-built with sunrooms and private water access. It’s especially popular among seasonal buyers who want natural beauty with city proximity. #5. Lake Weir, Florida In Marion County, Lake Weir stands out for its sandy beaches and low-key atmosphere. Many homes come with large lots, private docks, and backyard boat access. It’s a peaceful choice for full-time living, close enough to Ocala and The Villages without feeling overdeveloped or crowded. 2 more of the nations' most sought after lakefront real estate locations are in Florida: #17. Lake Santa Fe Spring-fed and known for its stable water levels, Lake Santa Fe has a reputation as one of north-central Florida’s hidden gems. It draws both seasonal and year-round residents, many of whom live in older homes shaded by oak trees with classic boathouses. The area’s focus is simple: boating, paddleboarding, and enjoying life outdoors - without the tourist traffic. #43. Lake Dora Lake Dora offers a walkable waterfront lifestyle in the heart of Mount Dora, a town known for its historic charm and marina access. Homes range from century-old estates to newer builds with boat slips, all tied together by a strong sense of community. It’s not a resort town - it’s a place where people put down roots and enjoy lake life year-round. “Lakefront homes have a unique way of combining investment potential with emotional appeal,” says a spokesperson from Calgary Homes. “What we’re seeing is that buyers aren’t just chasing scenery - they’re looking for places that support a slower, more connected lifestyle. Whether it’s for seasonal use or future retirement, these properties offer a blend of long-term value and personal meaning that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.” Previous Next

- Life Insurance Is On The To-Do List. Right Under Cleaning Out The Garage. | sun-times
Life Insurance Is On The To-Do List. Right Under Cleaning Out The Garage. By Sheeka Sanahori Sep 24, 2026 Being An Adult Comes With A Never-Ending List Of Responsibilities: Cook Dinner. Scrub The Bathroom. File Taxes. The Tasks Grow Even Longer When Sharing A Household With A Partner, Building A Family, Or Taking Care Of Others. No Matter How You Define "Adulting," Getting Life Insurance Tends To Be One Part Of The To-Do List That Keeps Getting Set On A Procrastination Loop. New survey data backs that up: there are plenty of other tasks adults would rather focus on first. The Adulting Task Americans Keep Avoiding According to the 2026 Life Happens Life Insurance Survey, a financial literacy NonProfit Organization, 39% of U.S. adults would rather clean out their email inbox than figure out their Life Insurance needs. Another 31% would rather clean out the garage or basement. One in five U.S. adults would be willing to sit on hold with customer service for three hours before Life Insurance planning. Even though many adults have it somewhere on their list, nearly half (46%) say they'll either deal with it later or not at all. They Know It Matters Nearly a third of adults have already figured out a life insurance plan, and they feel good about their decision. Others are feeling more conflicted: 14% have a policy, but they're not sure if they have enough. Another 12% say they either don't know where to start or they think it'll be too expensive. It's no wonder people are putting it off: Navigating a new-to-them form of financial planning can come with a lot of complicated emotions. Four in 10 feel either overwhelmed, anxious, or some combination of both. Sixteen percent of U.S. adults feel guilty for putting it off, but when the outcome is more procrastination, that feeling lingers. Why Later Keeps Winning If you've ever faced an important decision without having enough information to make an informed choice, you know how stressful it can be. While the generations have different takes on making major decisions with a gut feeling or "pure vibes," most of the time, people want to feel like they're making an informed choice. Forty-five percent of U.S. adults say cost concerns, confusion or procrastination are the main reasons they have delayed or would delay looking into Life Insurance. For more than one in five, the plan is to seriously look at it when they feel more financially stable. For 12%, they say they'll do it when they're older. Men tend to feel more confident about their Life Insurance decisions to date; 53% of men vs. 41% of women feel confident their family would be financially protected. The First Step Feels Bigger Than It Is Learning more about Life Insurance, how it's priced and how it works could help get many consumers out of their procrastination loop. A quarter of people say they'd make a decision if they learned it was easier to get than they previously thought. Thirty percent would make the purchase if they learned it was more affordable than they believed it to be. Others need an experienced professional to talk to or an online calculator tool to give them guidance. Methodology: Life Happens commissioned Atomik Research to conduct an online survey of 2,000 adults, including 700 Gen Z respondents, 700 millennials, and 600 Gen X respondents throughout the United States. The margin of error for the overall sample is +/- 2 percentage points and +/- 4 percentage points for each generational sample, with a confidence level of 95 percent. Fieldwork took place between July 14 and July 20, 2026. Atomik Research, part of 4media group, is a creative market research agency.
