As a catalyst for urban growth in the greater Fort Lauderdale area, the Florida Panthers have invested $100 Million into the construction of their official practice facility Baptist Health ICEPLEX with two NHL-regulation sized ice rinks and the recently revitalized historic War Memorial Auditorium, a 44,000-Square-Foot multipurpose concert venue. As part of the project, the Panthers renovated all veteran art and monuments around the venue (which has drawn visits from U.S. Presidents and celebrity icons from Buddy Holly to World Boxing Champion Hector Camacho over the decades) including the merchant marine monument outside the venue, the red flags along the exterior walkway which represents soldier art, one plaque representing Broward County Veterans that served in the Vietnam War and a second plaque representing those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation. Overlooking the main lobby from the top of the wall, patrons will find a soldier statue that was donated in the early 1970s by Gold Star Mothers, which is a group of mothers who lost a child or loved one during the Vietnam War. This statue is now located in a more prominent location inside the lobby and serves as a representation of all Broward County soldiers. Philanthropically, the Florida Panthers Foundation is committed to making a positive impact on the South Florida community and beyond. The Florida Panthers Foundation was established to benefit the South Florida community by focusing on four priority areas: building the game of hockey for children and youth, supporting health and education initiatives for children, advocating for and supporting Veterans’ issues, and raising awareness about the endangered Florida panther. - A New Year – A New Venezuela? | sun-times
A New Year – A New Venezuela? By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Jan 7, 2026 Happy New Year! It Has Been A Crazy Few Weeks, Nationally! I Joined With The Many Floridians Who Are Thrilled To See Maduro Behind Bars Where He Belongs. Even When Biden And Harris Were In Office, They Issued A Bounty Of $25 Million For Information That Would Lead To His Arrest. In July, Trump Doubled It. Political Posturing Cannot Change The Fact This Is A Welcomed Event For So Many Of Our Residents That Fled Venezuela. I know so many people that have shared stories of their businesses being torn away from them. Large and small, simply in a government takeover. Guised as independence and a better life for all simply became another failed nation like Cuba. Family businesses that employed many citizens shuttered. Democracy gone and trampled. I had the chance to visit Venezuela on a cruise years ago when the government began taking over stores. At first, it was recommended not to get off the ship, but I wanted to witness what was taking place. We hired a professional driver that did not leave our side. There were lines in front of every store. We drove to a shopping mall that was about the size of the old Broward Mall. It was right before Christmas, but the lot was virtually empty. It was really eerie, almost post-apocalyptic, the three of us walked about 20 minutes in the mall with most shops shuttered. The ones that were open had their gates partly closed for safety. I went into one which sold cosmetics to check the prices. In U.S. Dollars, a simple bottle of Calvin Klein was $375 Dollars. The only store with a line was a toy store. The gate was closed and opened, only allowing a few buyers in at a time. We drove a bit further to a restaurant on the water. It was lovely and the only place that was crowded. We had to insist that our driver remain and eat with us as workers were not allowed. They had to eat outside. I am sharing this due to the fact that many people have an opinion, but they do not have experience. They go off of online commentary without knowledge and worse without facts. Sure, these are historic times. Yes, there is uncertainty, but it is the right thing. Could you imagine our police officers coming to a commission meeting and having to tell us they are doing a drug raid? I do not think so. Even with the shock and awe Maduro knew his days were numbered. The question remains how long will the newly sworn in President remain in power. 283 of the officials who won the election last May were sworn in. The one main problem is that these are still mostly Marxist and socialist. According to reports there will be some time until a new election, but America will be working to get the country back on its feet. The oil companies’ involvement which is being called out as Trump takeover of the nation’s oil assets is not the full picture. Actually, it's Exxon and Mobile going back in and taking back over the assets they owned that were stripped away in 2007 without just compensation. If helping the economy helps the people of Venezuela it will be all worth it. Let’s hope the plan works and the country does get back on its feet. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org. - In Sync - Niki Haris & Shelly Berg Live - A Night Of Synchronicity And Soul Presented By Gold Coast Jazz Society | sun-times
In Sync - Niki Haris & Shelly Berg Live - A Night Of Synchronicity And Soul Presented By Gold Coast Jazz Society South Florida Sun Times Jan 1, 2026 When Niki Haris — The Radiant Spirit Of Soul — Meets Shelly Berg — The Maestro Of Motion — The Result Feels Nothing Short Of Inevitable. Some Collaborations Are Carefully Arranged; Others Appear As If Called Into Being, Sparked By An Unseen Rhythm, A Shared Pulse, A Glance Across A Piano And A Microphone. The Partnership Between Haris And Berg Belongs To The Latter. Their Music Is Effortless, Luminous, And Profoundly Alive. Don't Miss This Duo On Wednesday, January 14th, 2026 At Broward Center For The Performing Arts In Fort Lauderdale, Florida As Part Of The Gold Coast Jazz Society's Sizzling Season Series. Haris, daughter of the legendary Gene Harris, was raised in a world where melody was as natural as breath and Gospel grounded her. Jazz expanded her reach. And her years performing alongside icons — from Madonna to Ray Charles — widened her artistic horizon. “I don’t think music should ever lose its joy,” she has said, and her voice proves it. Warm, vital, and generous, Haris sings with the emotion of soul, the storytelling of the blues, and the unbound freedom of jazz. Berg meets her fire with a fluid brilliance of his own. A five-time Grammy® nominee, Steinway Artist, and Dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Berg is known for playing with both wisdom and wonder. Bill Kohlhaase of the Los Angeles Times once described him as “a whirlwind of motion on the piano bench,” and yet beneath the movement lies depth, poise, and clarity. His mastery allows him to listen deeply — to shape the moment while letting others shine. This spirit of musical interplay is precisely what the Gold Coast Jazz Society has championed throughout its history. Together, Haris and Berg embody that mission: creating music that is evolving, expressive, and alive in every measure. “The beauty of jazz,” Berg has said, “is what happens between the notes.” In those spaces, the duo finds connection — yielding performances that breathe, open and unguarded, moving through the room with ease. When the final note lingers, audiences don’t simply applaud; they exhale. Joined by Chuck Bergeron on bass and Gary Novak on drums, the Shelly Berg Trio provides the steady roots beneath Haris’ radiant bloom. In their shared synergy, something takes hold — a seed planted in sound, unfolding long after the last note fades. Event Details Date: Wednesday, January 14th, 2026 Time: 7:45 p.m. Location: Amaturo Theater, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale Presented by: Gold Coast Jazz Society Experience a night of pure synchronicity and soul. - Patriots Support Israel & COHB Retaining Sanitation Department
Patriots Support Israel & COHB Retaining Sanitation Department By Beverly Carawan May 27, 2021 Share Candidate Carla Spalding for 23rd, Beverly Carawan and Suzanne Vazquez of Hallandale & Beaches Patriots. Hallandale & the Beaches Patriots are all about actively taking stands on issues not only in our City but Statewide, Nationally and Internationally. On May 23rd, 2021 a group of members joined to rally with Israelis, Jews and Christians from all over to cheer, dance, pray and hear Passionate speakers. The enthusiasm and the love of Israel, was indeed, palpable. Learning of several City Commissioners’ proposals to ”farm out” the Sanitation Department, angered several members. The awesome sanitation department in our City, not only provides garbage collection and other services, they also help in times of natural disasters, to help secure our City and help clean up debris, afterwards. Outsourcing contracts, often require that there is an uncapped up-charge to be paid, in addition for those services. Mayor Joy Cooper commented by text, "I believe with the new leadership in the City Manager's office and DPW, this service can be retained and actually be provided for, efficiently.” Patriots will actively campaign for keeping the services local, caring about the workers who take pride in COHB and go beyond their job descriptions, to service our residents. At the May 18th, 2021 monthly meeting, Laurie Cardoza-Moore of Proclaiming Justice to the Nations, gave a compelling presentation on what every conservative American patriot, parent and grandparent must know –“Taking Back America’s Children” brings wisdom, insight and an action plan on protecting our next generation of American leadership, turning our nation back to faith, values and freedom. She showed paragraphs from US textbooks actually rewriting history to insidiously indoctrinate children into Socialism and Anti-Semitic feelings. Ruben Young, Candidate for USC District 23, gave a passionate introductory speech. Primary candidates are all welcome to come to the meetings and the club continues to grow larger, every month. Members eagerly discussed planning and task assignment for the MEMORIAL Day Remem-brance Event to be held at 220 Southwest 6th Avenue, Hallandale Beach. Residents including Police & Firefighters are welcome, as we honor those who have sacrificed for our Country and Vets who served or are serving, now. It was decided that hot dogs and hamburgers are free for Gold Star families, Police, Fire and Active-Duty military. Others can buy $1, $2, or $5 tickets good for raffles, food and beverages. Games, contests, prizes and a variety of food should assure a good time. Remember to bring your best apple pie and wear your best patriotic outfit to win! Meetings are every 3rd Tuesday at Upper Deck Grill & Sports Bar from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the next meeting is on June 15th, 2021. - Is Hebrew School An Essential?
Is Hebrew School An Essential? By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil August 31, 2023 Share You bet it is! And if it’s every day right after school, it’s not just essential, it’s a no brainer! Happy children of South Florida have begun a new year of Hebrew School this past Monday. CHAP, as it’s known, is not just a once a week Talmud Torah. It's an all encompassing daily after-school program geared towards Jewish children in Public Schools who have no formal Jewish Education. This Supplementary Program is designed for boys & girls ages 5-12, attending AWK8, American Heritage, BridgePrep, Charter, Country Dade, Nova, Pine Crest, Riviera, VABHOE and anyone looking for a daily after-school Hebrew School. Any Jewish child is welcome to try the program out completely FREE with No cost and No obligation! There are No memberships, background Knowledge or affiliations required to enroll. After the holidays, regular classes will continue at super affordable pricing with an option for No cost at all to parents that need it! The program starts together with Public Schools and meets daily right after school. Classes are conveniently located in Highland Lakes, at Chabad Chayil across from Aventura Waterways K-8. The Curriculum Includes: Traditions, Holidays, Jewish History, Parsha, Jewish Art, Prayer & Judaic Study with a primary focus on Hebrew Reading custom designed to teach each child at whichever level they may be. This program will offer a first taste of Jewish learning in a creative, joyful, hands-on and interesting way. We try to impart a sense of tradition using Modern and Innovative Teaching Techniques. This is a Hebrew School of the highest quality that kids can’t wait to go to! An Educational Consulting Company hired by Miami-Dade to rate All County After School Programs, has rated Chabad Chayil’s Program one of the best. After spending two weeks observing and analyzing every aspect of the Chabad’s Program, Cynthia Serure, President of A Gift for the Soul, Inc. concluded that program was exemplary. “This program scored at the top on virtually all Analytical Criteria including Quality Of Staff, Student-Teacher interaction, and Curriculum,” said Serure. “It is a model program.” According to all studies, Jewish Education is a proven factor in ensuring Jewish involvement and continuity. We seek to ensure that every single child has access to a High-Quality Jewish Education. Chabad is the place to experience Jewish Enrichment classes in a fun, yet meaningful way. It’s where parents feel comfortable and where kids don’t want to miss a day! CHAP attracts children ages 5-13 from 7 different schools and is extremely popular in the area for homeschoolers as well. There is a waiting list for some classes and the Chabad is working hard to build at their own location so they can expand accordingly. Construction is already on the way! See: www.ChabadChayil.org/build for updates! Transportation is provided for children coming from VABHOE (Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary School) and Bridgeprep Academy in the Skylake section of Aventura’s North Miami Beach. As far as other schools, there are many parents getting together to carpool and if there’s enough children coming from one school, a van or bus can be arranged. The school welcomes every Jew, regardless of Religious Background or Level Of Observance. This school does Not require membership of any sort as a condition for enrollment. Chabad Chayil's mission is to promote and strengthen Jewish Awareness, Pride, and Observance, by providing Educational, Cultural, and Social Activities to all Jewish individuals and families regardless of Background or Affiliation. One of our main programs is CHAP, whose mission is to provide affordable and effective Jewish Education to children not enrolled in Jewish Schools. Our goal is to enable parents to retain their jobs, confident that their children are safe & happy. CHAP keeps its students fit while instilling in them (and their families) a sense of warmth, pride and love for their Heritage & Israel. To register or learn about other after school activities (Leadership 4 Kids, Homework Help, Bar Mitzvah Academy, JewQ International Competition, Once-a-week options, Tutoring or Camp), please contact the School's Director, Mrs. Layah Kievman at: (305) 770-1919 Or visit: www.HebrewSchool.info The Author Rabbi Kievman together with his wife are the ambassadors of The Rebbe to Highland Lakes, FL. They are the Founders of CHAP - an After School Program for Jewish children in Public Schools and direct Chabad Chayil. He’s the Rabbi at The Family Shul and can be reached at: (305) 770-1919.
