  • A Time To Celebrate: 41st Annual Dinner Of Congregation Levi Yitzchok-Lubavitch / Chabad of South Broward

A Time To Celebrate: 41st Annual Dinner Of Congregation Levi Yitzchok-Lubavitch / Chabad of South Broward September 22, 2022 Share This past weekend hundreds set sail aboard the luxurious Grand Princess Yacht to celebrate the major grand expansion that is so badly needed. Chabad’s dozen of institutions in Hallandale are bursting at the seams. Fundraising this year will go towards phase 1 of the $18,000,000 Grand Expansion Project, which is so badly needed as they, once again have outgrown their present facilities. Due to phenomenal growth the original expansion has gone from $18,000,000 to $30,500,000, this figure includes burning the mortgaged at Chabad of South Broward Headquarters. A huge influx of families to Hallandale Beach and surrounding neighborhoods, has made it necessary to expand the Shul grounds to include more pre-school space, a Hebrew School and adult education classrooms, a CTeen and Friendship Circle Youth Center, a parking garage, a Women’s Balcony, an expanded Teacher’s Seminary and a proper Kiddush /Social Hall. Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus, Senior Rabbi of Congregation Levi Yitzchok-Lubavitch and Executive Director of Chabad of South Broward Headquarters, who started Shlichus in Broward County in 1980 with his Rebbitzen Goldie, invited everyone to take part in this historic Dinner. They were the first Chabad House in Broward County, today there are at least 30 Chabad Centers in South Broward. Every year, their dinners have been merited to receive a personal letter from the Lubavitcher Rebbe. "With great excitement we are at the final stages of our two building Florida Jerusalem Campus construction and we need your help to finish the project. In these dangerous and terrifying times we must make every effort to secure our precious children in our preschool, Hebrew School, Seminary, Bar and Bat Mitzvah Clubs, CTeen Program and our program for physically challenged children and teenagers, the Friendship Circle. Our Florida Jerusalem Campus, is an extremely highly exposed and bustling Jewish Center, as it is located on Hallandale Beach Boulevard, considered today the busiest street in the USA. This final stage will fortify the exterior of the building and enclose the walkway with electronic doors. See below for a detailed list of this security upgrade project. Please donate generously today and ask your parents, grandparents, family and friends to help as well. Together we will make a safer environment for our children." Rabbi Tennenhaus During the dinner Rabbi Yossi Lebovics led in the recital of Tehillim. Rabbi Leizer Barash read a letter to the Congregation from 1985, in which the Rebbe added a paragraph about his Holy Father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok, after whom Chabad’s first Synagogue in Broward is named. A special thanks is given to the entire staff of Chabad of South Broward Headquarters including Rabbi and Mrs. Moshe Schwartz, Rabbi and Mrs. Mendy Tennenhaus, Rabbi and Mrs. Mordechai Feiner, Rabbi and Mrs. Levi Tennenhaus, Rabbi and Mrs. Yossi Lebovics, Rabbi and Mrs. Yossi Lifshitz, and Rebbitzen Goldie Tennenhaus and Mrs. Chana Eliyahu for such dedication and making this dinner possible. Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus announced that the Dinner was 30 days before Simchas Torah and the entire Dinner had the air and spirit of Simchas Torah. Festivities took place on three floors of the luxurious Yacht and dinner guests left confident and uplifted, that they are entering the New Year 5783, a year that the Simcha will break all barriers with the imminent revelation of Moshiach, Now. • Giving Thanks & Thanksgiving

Giving Thanks & Thanksgiving By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil November 17, 2023 Share We Americans are thankful people. On Veteran’s Day we thank the brave men and women of our country that served in the military. On Memorial Day, we show our gratitude to those courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending our liberties and democratic lifestyle. On Labor Day, we express our appreciation to the industrious American workforce, the people who keep the wheels of our economy turning. On other days, we pause to thank different historic individuals who have made valuable contributions to our nation. And then there is Thanksgiving. The day when we thank G‑d for enabling all the above—and for everything else: He so kindly does for us. There is no doubt that this great country’s historically unprecedented success and prosperity is due to the fact that its Founding Fathers recognized that there is a Supreme Being who provides and cares for every creature. They understood that since G‑d sustains and gives life to every being, it follows that every being has certain “unalienable rights” upon which no government can impinge. These strong morals upon which our republic was founded express themselves to this day in American life. Looking at the dollar bill and seeing “In G-d We Trust” is a reassurance that, as a people, we still recognize and acknowledge the Source of all our achievements. As Jewish citizens of this land, we always look to the Torah for a deeper perspective and additional insight. What light does the Torah shed on the wonderful trait of thankfulness? Actually, there is one particular mitzvah which is completely devoted to expressing gratitude—the Mitzvah of Bikkurim (Deuteronomy 26:1–12). During the Temple era, every farmer was commanded to bring to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem the first fruits which ripened in his orchard. There he would recite a passage thanking G‑d for the Land and its bountiful harvest, and the fruits were given to the Kohanim (priests). The Midrash extols the great virtue of this Mitzvah, going so far as to say that the Land of Israel was given to the Jews as a reward for the Mitzvah of Bikkurim they would observe after entering the Land! While the importance of expressing deserved gratitude is self-understood, it is difficult to comprehend the special significance of Bikkurim. Isn’t the Jewish day jam-packed with “thank you”s? The first words we utter when waking in the morning, Modeh Ani, expresses our thanks to G‑d for returning our souls to our bodies. Thrice daily during the course of prayer, we thank G‑d for everything imaginable. Before and after eating, we thank G‑d for the food. There is even a blessing recited upon exiting the restroom, thanking G‑d for normal bodily function! With all the thanking which occurs on a daily basis, why the need for a specific Mitzvah commandment to emphasize the point? And why the great reward for this particular form of expressing thanks? The Rebbe points out one obvious difference between Bikkurim and all the other ways we thank G‑d: Bikkurim involves more than just words—it requires a commitment; the gratitude must express itself in deeds. Bikkurim implies that our thankfulness to G‑d cannot remain in the realm of emotions, thoughts, or even speech, but must also move us to action. While the Mitzvah of Bikkurim in its plainest sense is not practicable today, its lessons are timeless. Our gratitude to G‑d must express itself in the actions of our daily life. Giving back the “first of our fruit,” the choicest share of the crop, is the only appropriate way to thank G‑d for giving us all our fruit. So this Thanksgiving, in addition to saying thanks, let’s give thanks, with a bit more than just words. Let’s show G-d our appreciation by being more kind and generous, giving to the people and good causes around us! Happy Thanksgiving! • Keeping Pets Safe At Halloween: A Veterinarian’s Advice | sun-times

Keeping Pets Safe At Halloween: A Veterinarian’s Advice South Florida Sun Times Oct 29, 2025 When The Leaves Begin To Turn Colors And Pumpkins Begin Appearing On Neighborhood Porches, You Know That Halloween Is Just Around The Corner. While Spooky Season Is A Fun Time Of The Year For Many People, It Can Also Become A Little Too Scary For Pets If Owners Don’t Take Precautions. Dr. Erin Ray, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), and Dr. Lori Teller, a VMBS clinical professor, share their veterinary advice for keeping pets safe at Halloween to help pet owners best celebrate the spooky season with their furry friends. Halloween Food Safety For Pets One of the most iconic parts of Halloween is the food, including candy and party snacks like popcorn balls and caramel-covered apples. Because these foods are abundant at this time of year, pet owners should pay close attention to what treats their animals indulge in. “It is vital to be careful with any candy and food that could be potentially toxic for your pet to ingest throughout this holiday season,” Ray said. Common ingredients that are harmful for pets include: • Chocolate • Onion • Garlic • Xylitol (an artificial sweetener) • Any fatty or rich food “Pet treats are a fun thing to give to pets, as long as they aren’t too rich, don’t contain toxic ingredients, can’t pose a choking hazard, or aren’t too hard,” Ray said. If you find yourself in a situation where your pet has consumed something potentially detrimental to their health, The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control can be reached at (888) 426-4435 and the Pet Poison Helpline can be reached at (855) 764-7661. Alternatives To Offering Treats If you’re concerned about the contents of pet treats, another way to celebrate Halloween while keeping your pet safe is by investing in a new toy. “Toys that can’t be ripped apart, broken into pieces, or have pieces taken off of them are a great thing to give your furry friend during the holidays, with owner supervision,” Ray said. “This is particularly true for string toys for cats.” Helping Pets Cope With Crowds And Noises Visiting haunted houses and watching horror movies may be how some Halloween enthusiasts enjoy celebrating the season, but pets don’t always share their owners’ affinity for the frightening. “Pets can exhibit signs of fear in new, crowded, or loud situations, which would include places like haunted houses, hay mazes, and even loud movies in their normal home,” Ray said. “They can often mirror their owner’s emotions, too, so if an owner is scared, nervous, or anxious, the pet can show similar signs.” Ways that pets exhibit fear and anxiety can include: • Ears back and tail tucked • Dilated pupils • Hiding/cowering • Trying to run away • Hair on back/tail erect Dogs may also show fear by barking or biting, while cats may hiss or swat. Is Trick-Or-Treating Safe For Pets? Whether your pet should accompany you out for a night of trick-or-treating is largely dependent on their personality and how familiar they are with the activity. Even if you intend to stay at home for the night, Ray encourages owners to make sure to consider your pet’s comfort when making your Halloween plans. “Parties and trick-or-treating can be fun for some animals, such as well-socialized dogs or cats who enjoy the attention, but these activities can be stressful for others because of the scary shapes and sounds, like the doorbell ringing,” Ray said. “Costumes can also scare pets if they are big, elaborate, or not something that the animal has seen before.” With this in mind, Ray strongly recommends that pet owners take caution during parties where a pet could come across unsuspecting threats. If people are visiting, it’s also important to communicate which treats can and cannot be shared with pets. “A trial run with a small group of friends can be a good way to assess how your pet will respond to other people, and start getting them familiar with parties and festivities,” Ray said. Dealing With Halloween Decorations Just as some people prefer to celebrate the season with harvest imagery and others lean into the spooky side, pets’ love of Halloween decorations can be personality-dependent. “Many animals do not appreciate large, new decorations that could scare them or make them nervous, while others may enjoy playing with them or trying to chew them,” Ray said. “Any decorative items lying around that could be chewed on or swallowed have the opportunity to become foreign body risks.” Are Pumpkins Safe For Pets? In general, pumpkin can be an excellent treat for cats and dogs because it is both tasty and low in calories, making it a healthy alternative to traditional treats. “Pumpkins are roughly 90% water, so they can be filling for a pet without increasing their caloric intake, which is beneficial for overweight or obese pets,” Teller said. Letting pets munch on the insides of a fresh pumpkin, can provide other health benefits, specifically by providing fiber that can ease digestive issues, but only if eaten in conservative amounts. “Because the seeds or the fibrous strands are very high in fiber, eating too much can cause stomach upset,” Teller said. “When owners let their pet eat pumpkin, they should think of it like they are feeding their pet treats — treats should make up less than 10% of their total caloric intake.” Halloween is a time for candy, laughs, and a scare or two. With some simple adjustments, it can be a fun holiday for the entire family. Previous Next
