100 Jewish American Mothers Visit Israel As Part Of Emotional Trip With Momentum By Linda Chase - Jewish Connection News Jan 7, 2025 A delegation of Jewish mothers from eight U.S. cities took part in Momentum’s year-long Journey of Growth, connecting them with their Jewish identity and heritage. A group of 100 women from eight American cities visited Israel from November 4-11 as part of an eight-day trip organized by the global Jewish organization Momentum, which aims to inspire Jewish women to lead a Jewish future by becoming more connected to their identity, heritage, and Israel. The eight-day trip was part of the Momentum year-long program known as the Journey of Growth, an initiative that provides women with the opportunity to delve into the spirit of Jewish unity that defines their homeland. Momentum, which works closely with the Israeli Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, brings Jewish parents from around the world, the majority of whom are mothers, to Israel and empowers them to be change agents in their respective Jewish communities. Many stops on their itinerary paid tribute to the victims and heroes of October 7, like a tour of the ANU–Museum of the Jewish People and its new exhibition, “October Seventh,” which examines how Israeli culture reacted to the war, a visit to Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square, where participants expressed their solidarity with the families of the kidnapped victims and a day where they traveled to Israel’s South which included a stop at Kibbutz Kfar Aza and the Nova Festival Memorial site. The women also heard from Dr. Zohar Raviv, Momentum Scholar-in-Residence and the International Vice President of Education and Strategy at Taglit-Birthright Israel, who discussed how each woman can make a difference in advocating for Israel. They also listened to remarks from Lieutenant Colonel (Res.) Yaron Buskila, who confronted more than a dozen terrorists on October 7. Participants hailed from seven cities; including Cooper City, Orlando, northern New Jersey, Toronto, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New York City and Minneapolis. Native Israelis (who were part of the group) shared accounts of their life experiences since the war broke out. The educational programming mirrored the trip’s overall theme of acknowledging loss but also underscoring the Jewish’s people’s longstanding tradition of living a prideful and joyful life. Topics discussed during group sessions included delving into the power of memory, learning, growth, prayer, and taking action. The volunteer activities and emotional meetings are meant to inspire and prepare them to engage in meaningful dialogue so those in their home communities understand why the land of Israel is so integral to the story of the Jewish people. The trip was a powerful display of Jewish leadership in action. “While the events of October 7 have definitely influenced our Journey of Growth, we want our participants to bear witness to the atrocities of that day, we’re also passionate about showing these women the incredible resilience of the Jewish and Israeli spirit,” said Orit Mizner, Chief Operating Officer at Momentum. “Israel existed before October 7 and will continue much after. As an educational organization, we have a responsibility to foster Jewish identity, reclaim the Jewish and Israeli narrative and celebrate it. We also hope that the Israeli motivation to push forward inspires our community of women as they go home and find ways in which they can be positive agents in their communities.” The trip is just one aspect of the organization’s comprehensive Momentum Action Network. The multi-pronged initiative was spearheaded in the early days of the war to create a connection to what’s happening in Israel through the lens of the organization, deliver support through educational initiatives and inspire action through opportunities to do something positive for Israel in their own Jewish communities. This comes in addition to the organization’s campaign called “This Year I Will, This Year We Will,” which encourages all Momentum participants to take on the responsibility of finding ways to come together and give back to their Jewish community either individually or as a collective. Trip participant Samantha Schepps of Washington, D.C., said, “I wanted to continue to grow spiritually, and this is a great way to do that. The trip has been amazing, and I also appreciated the opportunity to visit the site of the October 7th victims. That experience helped me understand what happened that horrible day. I have young boys and have avoided watching the news, but now I feel confident in sharing what I saw when I got home and letting everyone know Israelis are resilient and the country is safe.” Momentum is a strong proponent in working with Jewish organizations around the world and has worked with over 300 partner organizations to coordinate its myriad activities. For this particular trip, Momentum collaborated with The Jewish Agency for Israel’s Partnership2Gether (P2G) Program and The Jewish Federations of North America. Momentum was founded in 2009 and brought 24,000 participants from 36 countries to Israel. Since October 7th, the organization has brought some 800 participants from 15 countries to bear witness to Israel’s story and share what they heard with their own communities when they return home. Momentum is also fully connected to the organizational ecosystem across the Jewish world, maintaining partnerships with approximately 350 Jewish organizations and federations. The organization was established when Lori Palatnik, along with seven other Jewish mother leaders (known as the Utah 8), noticed that communities were struggling to connect women with Jewish values and Israel, and together with eight women from the Washington, D.C. area developed the concept of a subsidized trip to Israel for Jewish mothers as a transformative investment in the Jewish family. The SOQ program recognizes Navy personnel, E-6 and below acting as role models of Navy professionalism and personal dedication. O'Malley, a 2017 graduate of Cooper City High School, joined the Navy four years ago. "I joined the Navy to serve in the greatest fighting force the world has ever seen alongside people who share the core values of honor, courage and commitment," said O'Malley. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Cooper City. "I learned that you have to not care about people's opinion of you," said O'Malley. "My brother and sister are amazing at that, however I am still working on it." Today, O'Malley serves as a hospital corpsman responsible for providing medical care to Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their families. King Tides And The Rising Risk Of Flooding - Coastal Flood Advisory In Effect Through December 16th November 14, 2024 Share The City of Hollywood and much of South Florida is facing heightened flooding risks as a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect through December 16th, 2024. This advisory is triggered by the occurrence of King Tides, which are unusually high tides expected periodically through mid-December. These seasonal high tides, coupled with Rising Sea Levels and inclement weather, are putting the city’s low-lying coastal areas at increased risk of flooding. For residents, motorists, and businesses, the next few weeks will require heightened awareness and preparedness. Understanding King Tides King Tides are an annual phenomenon, marked by unusually high tides that occur when the moon is closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit. This proximity amplifies the gravitational pull on Earth’s oceans, resulting in higher-than-normal tides. While these tides are a natural occurrence, they can have a significant impact on coastal areas, especially those already vulnerable to flooding. Hollywood is particularly susceptible to tidal flooding due to its flat topography and proximity to the coast. The city boasts seven miles of shoreline and nearly 8 miles of canals, making it highly vulnerable to Sea Level Rise and tidal inundation. As climate change contributes to Rising Sea Levels, these events are becoming more frequent and more severe, posing ongoing challenges to coastal communities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted above-average high tides for several periods between now and mid-December, including: • November 12th - November 19th • December 13th - December 16th These high tides are expected to cause tidal flooding in low-lying coastal areas, especially during the times of highest tide. Coastal roads, parking lots, and docks are especially vulnerable. Flooding can also affect local Infrastructure, including stormwater systems, creating challenges for both residents and city officials. The anticipated high tides could raise water levels by more than 2.5 feet in some areas, exacerbating the already significant flooding risks. Motorists are urged to use caution and avoid flooded streets during these times. Flooding is most likely to occur during the hours of peak tide, and it may persist for several hours depending on weather conditions, including rainfall and wind. While King Tides are the primary cause of seasonal tidal flooding, they can be further influenced by other weather factors, particularly rainfall and wind strength. Heavy rainfall can lead to runoff, which, combined with high tides, can overwhelm stormwater drainage systems and increase the flooding risk. Wind can also play a significant role: winds blowing onshore (from the ocean toward land) can push additional water inland, exacerbating the height of the tides and flooding in vulnerable coastal areas. These compounded effects make tidal flooding particularly unpredictable, and it’s important for residents to stay informed of weather forecasts and tide predictions during these periods of heightened risk. Hollywood is one of many coastal communities grappling with the effects of climate change, which has caused Rising Sea Levels over recent decades. The city’s **flat topography** and a large network of canals and waterways mean that water has few natural barriers or elevated areas to flow toward. As a result, tidal flooding can easily spread across the city’s streets, particularly in neighborhoods located closest to the coast. City of Hollywood’s Flood Mitigation Efforts To address the ongoing risks of tidal flooding, the City of Hollywood has been actively working on both short-term and long-term solutions to mitigate the impacts. One significant project already completed is the installation of flap gates in the city’s stormwater system. These gates are designed to prevent tidal water from flowing back into the stormwater drains, reducing the amount of water that floods streets during high tide events. In addition to flap gates, the city has also deployed auxiliary pumps in high-risk areas. These pumps help to remove flood water from streets quickly, reducing the duration of flooding and minimizing its impact on local residents and businesses. These pumps are particularly important during periods of high tide when the natural drainage system is overwhelmed by rising waters. "The Price For Freedom" The First Civil Rights Martyrs Story To Be Filmed In Davie June 30, 2022 Share There are many well-known figures whose names have become synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century. Many that have truly paid “The Price for Freedom”. Martin Luther King Jr. Rosa Parks. Malcolm X. Medgar Evans. Emmett Till. The list sadly goes on. Two names that are not as easily recognized by most are the very first martyrs of the Civil Rights Movement – and the only married couple to be assassinated for the cause. Educator, activists, and Civil Rights Leaders Harry T. Moore and his wife Harriette V. S. Moore. Telling Their Story Top Cat II Productions has begun pre-production of a Mario Van Peebles Film entitled The Price For Freedom, the true story of NAACP organizer Harry T. Moore and his wife Harriette, who were the only husband and wife to give their lives to the movement when a bomb exploded under their bedroom floor killing them as they slept on Christmas evening at 10:30 p.m. in 1951. No one was ever convicted of their murder. The film is directed by Mario Van Peebles (Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Empire, The Last Ship, Sons of Anarchy) who stars as Moore opposite Aisha Jackson, the first Black actor to portray the role of Anna in Frozen on Broadway. Van Peebles’ many film roles include his critically acclaimed performance as another civil rights icon, Malcolm X, in the Oscar® nominated Ali. The cast is rounded out by three-time Emmy® winner Keith David (Greenleaf), Kevin Sorbo (Soul Surfer, God's Not Dead, Faith Under Fire) and Harry Lennix (The Blacklist). The screenplay by John Didonna and Walter T. Shaw is inspired by The Bomb Heard Around the World and explores the mystery behind the Moores’ slayings. Filming will take place for six weeks in Davie, Florida starting late July 2022 in an orange grove setting that strongly resembles the Mims, Florida home in Brevard County where the Moores worked, lived and died. Top Cat II Productions will complete exterior and interior shots with three specially constructed sets that replicate the Moores’ home. “Nineteen years before passage of the Civil Rights Act, Harry T. Moore launched voter registration drives in Florida that increased Black registered voters from 5% to 37%,” noted Van Peebles. “His slogan was ‘A Voteless Citizen is a Voiceless Citizen,’ and that message and his commitment is extremely relevant today as Florida and states across the country enact legislation that could limit Black participation at the polls.” Shaw, who heads Top Cat II Productions with Diana Ross-Shaw, had created a curriculum, written by Erica Fix, about the Moores to be used in Florida schools that now faces some uncertainty due to a new Florida law commonly referred to as the “Stop WOKE Act,” that restricts how racial history and issues may be addressed in classrooms. “Harry and Harriette Moore were Florida school teachers for more than a decade and both were fired due to their Civil Rights Activism,” Shaw said. “It is incomprehensible and infuriating to me that students in Florida classrooms may not be allowed to learn of their history and, indeed, much of the history of the Civil Rights Movement. It underscores the need for this film and I continue to work with a task force to allow this to be part of the curriculum.” Activists & Advocators The Moores were the first true Civil Rights Activists of the modern Civil Rights Era in the State of Florida. Harry organized the first Brevard County Branch of the NAACP in 1934 and became its President. He would later coordinate chapters throughout the State, and in 1941 became President of the Florida Conference of NAACP Branches. In 1944 Moore formed the Florida Progressive Voter's League and became its Executive Director. The league was instrumental in helping register over 100,000 black voters in the State of Florida. As the head of the Florida State Conference of the NAACP, Harry T. Moore led the fight against injustices on behalf of the state's African American population on a number of fronts, including voting rights and the equalization of pay for the state's black teachers. Significantly, Moore also served as a forceful advocate against racial violence and lynching in Florida. His efforts in bringing attention to the lynching of the African American teenager Willie James Howard in 1944 and to the miscarriage of justice in the Groveland Rape case in 1949 are vivid examples of his activism on this front. Moore's vocal criticism of the failures of the criminal justice system—especially the ineptitude and complicity of law enforcement and the racism that permeated the courts—offered a much-needed critique of the tragic intersection of Jim Crow and civil rights violations. The Day They Were Slain At 10:20pm, on a foggy December 25th in 1951, a bomb exploded under their small shotgun style home on the outskirts of Mims, Florida – directly under their bedroom. It was both Christmas day, and Harry and Harriette’s 25th wedding anniversary. Harry T. Moore died on his way to the hospital in Sanford, FL in a car being driven by his brother-in-law George Simms. Harriet’s death came 9 days later, just after saying final goodbyes to her husband at the mortuary. The story of the Moores is one that is equal parts civil rights history, and a personal tale of love, commitment and family. Sadly, it is a story that has for decades receded into dim memory. And yet the voices of these two pioneering leaders in the early struggle for civil rights call out through the decades not to be forgotten. Hallandale Beach Residents: There Are Programs To Help If You Are In Need August 17, 2023 Share If you struggle with providing food for yourself and your family, you may qualify for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). If you don't qualify for TEFAP, Project Lifeline provides food distribution without registration. The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of Low-Income Americans, including elderly people, by providing them with Emergency Food Assistance at no cost. Through TEFAP, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) purchases a variety of Nutritious, High-Quality USDA Foods and makes those foods available to state distributing agencies. Food Programs The Human Services Department offers two Food Distribution programs that provide temporary assistance to residents of Hallandale Beach. The Food Pantry at The Hepburn Center houses a pantry consisting of canned items, staple foods and meats available to those in need. The pantry is open Monday through Friday, but you must see a Social Worker before receiving any food. Individuals are interviewed to ensure they meet eligibility requirements. Senior Activity Center The Hepburn Center operates a program Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for residents 60 years or older. A comprehensive schedule of services and activities are provided to enhance the ability of senior citizens to maintain their Independence, improve Socialization Skills, provide Counseling, Medical, Housing and Legal Aid. Program services include: Transportation to and from the Center, Continental Breakfast, Arts and Crafts, Computer Classes, Music, Enhance Fitness, Education, Forums, Field Trips, Nutritious Lunch, and Special Events. A Social Worker is assigned to provide Counseling, Case Management and Referrals for seniors in need of services. You must register for the programs to participate. Training is conducted by a certified instructor from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. every Monday. Blend in the Milk, the Eggs and the Butter. Grease the Bundt pan with the Butter and pour in the Batter. Bake according to package instructions for the Bundt Cakes then add 10-15 minutes. Let it cool before icing it. To make the frosting: In a bowl, mix the Butter, the Cream Cheese and the Whipping Cream. Slowly blend in the Powdered Sugar. Ice the entire Bundt Cake or place the Frosting in the Piping Bag and pipe with back and forth "drip" motion. Sprinkle the Sanding Sugar for a sparkly snow appearance, if desired. Red Velvet Cake Balls Recipe courtesy of "Cookin' Savvy" 1 Red Velvet Cake mix 1 Cup of All-Purpose Flour 1 Heaping Tablespoon of Cocoa Powder 1 Cup of Sugar 1 Cup of Milk 3 Eggs 1 Stick of Melted Butter Frosting: 1/2 Stick of Softened Butter 4 Ounces of Softened Cream Cheese 1/8 Cup of Heavy Whipping Cream 2 1/2 Cups of Powdered Sugar, plus additional for rolling, divided Heat oven to 350 F. In a mixing bowl, mix the Cake Mix, the Flour, the Cocoa Powder and the Sugar. Blend in the Milk, the Eggs and the Butter. Grease a 9-by-13-inch pan and pour in the Batter and bake it for 45 minutes. Remove it from the oven and use a fork to crumble the Cake and then place it in a large bowl. To make the Frosting: In a bowl, mix the Butter, the Cream Cheese and the Whipping Cream. Slowly blend in the Powdered Sugar. Mix the Frosting into a bowl with the Cake. Form the Cake Mixture into balls and then roll in the Powdered Sugar. Red Velvet Cookie Cutouts Recipe courtesy of "Cookin' Savvy" 1 Red Velvet Cake Mix 1 Cup of All-Purpose Flour 1 Heaping Tablespoon of Cocoa Powder 1 Cup of Sugar 1 Cup of Milk 3 Eggs 1 Stick of Melted Butter Frosting: 1 Stick of Softened Butter 1 8 Ounce Package of Softened Cream Cheese 1/4 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream White Sanding Sugar (optional) Heat the oven to 350 F. In a mixing bowl, mix the Cake Mix, the Flour, the Cocoa Powder and the Sugar. Blend in the Milk, the Eggs and the Butter. Cover the two Cookie Sheets with the Parchment Paper. Pour half the mixture onto each sheet. Bake them for 25-30 minutes. Let the Cookies cool then freeze them for 1 hour. Use the Cookie Cutters to make the desired shapes. To make the Frosting: In a bowl, mix the Butter, the Cream Cheese and the Whipping Cream. Slowly blend in the Powdered Sugar. Using a knife or a piping bag, frost the Cookies.
