Petty Officer 2nd Class Luke O'Malley, a native of Cooper City, Florida, was recently named Sailor of the Quarter (SOQ), fourth quarter, serving in the U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Unit (NMRTU) Bahrain.
The SOQ program recognizes Navy personnel, E-6 and below acting as role models of Navy professionalism and personal dedication.
O'Malley, a 2017 graduate of Cooper City High School, joined the Navy four years ago.
"I joined the Navy to serve in the greatest fighting force the world has ever seen alongside people who share the core values of honor, courage and commitment," said O'Malley.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Cooper City.
"I learned that you have to not care about people's opinion of you," said O'Malley. "My brother and sister are amazing at that, however I am still working on it."
Today, O'Malley serves as a hospital corpsman responsible for providing medical care to Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their families.
"HM2 O'Malley is an exemplary sailor and a remarkable asset to our team," said Lieutenant Adeyemo Olusola, Administrative Department head for NMRTU Bahrain. "As a dedicated Fleet Liaison, he tirelessly ensures that our warfighters at the forefront of our national strategy and foreign policy receive the healthcare they need in a timely manner. His commitment not only helps maintain the readiness of our forces but also enables them to effectively carry out their missions at sea, countering threats and preserving open access to international waters. O'Malley's passion and professionalism truly embody the spirit of service and dedication within our ranks."
NMRTU Bahrain is a Department of Defense (DoD) facility that is part of the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and U.S. 5th Fleet who provide a range of services, including primary care, dental care, occupational health, aviation medicine, lab services, pharmacy, mental health, physical therapy, preventive medicine, and industrial hygiene.
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
O'Malley serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.
“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”
O'Malley has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
"My proudest accomplishment while serving in the Navy is becoming both surface and air warfare qualified, serving aboard USS George Washington," said O'Malley.
O'Malley can take pride in serving America through military service.
"In my eyes, serving means that you sacrifice some of the freedoms that you would have to better yourself, protect your country and uplift the communities around you by striving for greatness every day," said O'Malley.
O'Malley is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
"I would like to give a huge shoutout to my beautiful wife, Emily Sasser, who is stationed on board USS George Washington," added O'Malley. "I am blessed and thankful that she supports myself and our country every day."
