- From Miami’s Jewish Beginning, There Was Isidor Cohen | sun-times
From Miami’s Jewish Beginning, There Was Isidor Cohen By Sylvia Gurinsky Feb 18, 2025 Recently the City of Miami celebrated Isidor Cohen, a true pioneer of Miami, with the naming of Isidor Cohen Road. The event, held with family and friends present at the Center for Jewish Life at Beth David, 2625 Southwest 3rd Avenue, honored his legacy of community growth, cultural inclusion, and vision for our city’s future. (Pictured: All descendants of Isidor and Ida Cohen.) In June, 1896, Isidor Cohen, a young merchant, was beginning his first summer in Miami and was already experiencing business ups and downs, mosquitos, snakes, rats and hot weather. Nevertheless, he wrote in his diary, “This is going to be a wonderful city.” Greater Miami has had its own ups and downs, but Cohen’s prediction has generally been correct. And he and his family have been among the reasons for that success. Cohen had arrived in February, 1896, two months before the first train. He tried to negotiate with Julia Tuttle for land on the north side of the Miami River. She recommended he take a job clearing land. “I tried to impress this naïve lady that the last labor of this character my race had performed was in the land of Egypt, and that it would be a violation of my religious convictions to resume that condition of servitude,” he later wrote. After starting on the south side of the river, Cohen soon moved to the north side, where most of the business was. He quickly became part of the growing community, joining most of the new organizations except the Tuxedo Club – because he didn’t own a tuxedo. In July, 1896, Cohen voted to officially incorporate the city of Miami. He took note of the Black men who voted and spoke in favor of the new city and wrote favorably about them. His book, “Historical Sketches and Sidelights of Miami, Florida,” was published in 1925 – the first locally published book with a positive look at the Black community. In the beginning, things looked favorable for the growing Jewish community as well, with an 1896 Commemoration of the High Holy Days. But two fires and a Yellow Fever Epidemic before 1900 temporarily reduced the size of that community. Cohen didn’t give up. In 1904, he married Ida Schneiderman, the widow of another early Miami Jewish merchant, and adopted her son, Murray. Isidor and Ida added two more children – daughter Claire and son Eddie, who had the first Bris in Miami in 1908. The growth extended far beyond the family. In 1912, Isidor and Ida were among the founders of Beth David Congregation, the city’s first and oldest Synagogue. In 1941, Ida Cohen was a principal creator of what’s now Miami Jewish Health Systems. After World War 2, the Cohens were among the founders of Mount Sinai Medical Center. During the 1950’s, Claire Cohen Weintraub helped to begin what is now the Frost Science Museum. By the time Isidor Cohen died in 1951, Miami was on its way to becoming a major international center. Today, members of his family continue as community leaders. In January, the City of Miami honored Cohen by naming the street just north of Beth David Congregation for him. Such an honor is long overdue for a primary founding father of Jewish Miami. The event will take place December 17 – 18 at the Johnson Street Hollywood Bandshell. Holiday Shopping Safety Tips from the Hollywood Police Department The holidays are a joyous time to spend with loved ones and many of us enjoy exchanging gifts and donating to charitable causes. While we continue to navigate the pandemic, many people have chosen to stay home and shop online, however with shipping deadlines creeping up, many people are hitting the stores to finish up their holiday shopping. Unfortunately, crowded stores aren’t all that shoppers have to be aware of. There are a high volume of thieves and scam artists who want to take advantage of the holiday spirit of giving. Here are some tips from the Hollywood Police Department to help you ensure your purchases and donations don't end up costing you more than you expected: Shopping in Stores • Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan ahead by taking someone with you or ask a store employee to help you carry your packages to the car. • Consider alternate options to pay for your merchandise, such as one-time or multi-use disposable credit cards or money orders. • Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. An enterprising thief would love to shoulder surf to get your account information. • Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. The same applies if you are using mass transit or walking to and from your car. • Deter pick-pockets. Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket. • Carry only the credit cards you need and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. • When shopping with small children, keep them close to you and make a plan in case you are separated from each other. Select a central meeting place and teach them how to identify mall personnel or security if they need help. • Teach children to never leave the store until you find one another. • When parking your vehicle to go shopping, remember where you parked it! Always park in a well-lit and well-traveled area. Do not park in a remote dark area. • Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. You will be ready to unlock the door and will not be delayed by fumbling and looking for your keys. • When you return to your vehicle, scan the interior of your car to be sure no one is hiding inside. Check to see if you are being followed. • Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. When storing items purchased at the stores, place them out of sight. The best place is in a locked trunk or if possible, take them directly home. • Do not leave any valuables (i.e. your purse, wallet, or cellular telephone) in plain view in your vehicle. • Lock your vehicle and put up your windows, even while you are driving. • If you go to an automatic teller machine for cash, check for people around you and make sure it is well lit and in a safe location. • Drive defensively. Traffic is heavier during the holidays. Drivers may also have indulged in too much holiday spirits. Shopping Online • When shopping online, it’s wise to pay with a credit card instead of a debit card if possible. Both allow you to dispute a charge if the merchandise never arrives or is different from what was ordered. However, with a debit card, the price will have already been deducted from your bank account and it will take time to get your money back. • When ordering online, look to ensure that your browser is a secure connection. In the address bar, a padlock should appear if your browsing session is secure. • Some credit card providers offer one-time card numbers to be used for online transactions to further protect your financial information. Contact your financial institution to see if they offer such a service. • Keep your personal information safe. Never provide your credit card, bank account information or social security number to a stranger. No reputable vendor or service provider will ever initiate a call and ask you for this information over the phone. • Save all receipts. Print and save all confirmations from your online purchases. Start a file folder to keep all receipts together and to help you verify credit card or bank statements as they come in. • Beware of the "good deal" scams. Things are not always what they appear to be. Holiday Charity Scams • Be sure the charity is legitimate. Check to see if they are a registered charity with the State Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at https://www.fdacs.gov/Consumer-Resources/Charities or by calling 1.800.HELP.FLA. While there, be sure you check to understand how much of the donation will actually go toward the work of the charity as opposed to administrative expenses. • Contact the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance at http://give.org or by calling 703.247.9321 to determine if the charity you are donating to has any complaints against them. • Watch for similar sounding charities. It’s not unusual for scam artists to choose names that sound like the names of legitimate, widely known charities. • Never give your credit card number or bank account information to a caller on the phone or someone who sent you an unsolicited email. If you are interested in donating to a charity that has initiated contact with you, ask them to send you a pledge form and information about the charity in the mail. Legitimate charities should have no problem with this request. • Most tax-exempt organizations are also required to file an annual return or notice with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS Code requires automatic revocation of a charity’s tax-exempt status (some charities are exempt from this requirement) if it fails to file a return for three consecutive years. Publication of an organization’s name on the Auto Revocation list on the IRS website helps potential donors determine the status of a charity. To learn more about the tax-exempt status of a charity, go to www.irs.gov and search the Charities and Non-Profits topics. Being mindful of these important tips to safeguard your identity, avoid scams and shop safely can help ensure you have a happy, healthy and safe holiday season. - Stand Against Hunger: Food Shouldn’t Be an Impossible Choice
Stand Against Hunger: Food Shouldn’t Be an Impossible Choice August 25, 2022 Share For many, a daily meal is a simple choice of what to eat. But for people facing hunger, a daily meal poses a very different type of choice. It’s often an impossible choice between food or other crucial needs, such as electricity, childcare or medicine. Make the choice to participate in Hunger Action Month in September and together we can eliminate hunger. Hunger Action Month is a time dedicated to raising awareness of the hunger crisis nationwide. In South Florida approximately one million individuals face hunger and have no idea where their next meal is coming from. This includes nearly 500,000 children and seniors. Food shouldn’t be an impossible choice. Feeding South Florida works to make food available and accessible to those who need it most. Join fellow South Floridians during Hunger Action Month to take a stand against hunger by sharing, volunteering, donating, fundraising and other actions to draw attention to this critical issue. Feeding South Florida experienced an unprecedented increase in providing nutritious food to over 1.1 million individuals due to inflation, the strained supply chain, rising fuel prices, increased housing costs and other factors stemming from the COVID-19 Pandemic. “The community’s support comes at a crucial time, when the demand for food has increased significantly due to inflation at its highest in 13 years and rising food costs,” said Paco Vélez, President and CEO of Feeding South Florida. “Hunger Action Month is a great opportunity for the community to be a part of a month-long initiative that has a real and lasting impact on our mission of ending hunger in South Florida. We are proud to serve the South Florida community for over 40 years and will continue to do whatever it takes to provide access to nutritious food, tools and education for economic growth throughout Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.” To commemorate Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative created by Feeding America® to inspire action toward ending hunger in the United States, Feeding South Florida will unveil the winning artwork from its third annual “Feed Your Creativity” Art Competition. Artwork by Caeden Khouri, a sixth grader at Coral Springs Charter School, will be displayed as a truck wrap on one of its 36-foot tractor-trailers that travels throughout Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. Feeding South Florida of Pembroke Park will offer a range of events and activities to encourage South Floridians to get involved and “go orange,” the color and call to action of Feeding South Florida. Monetary donations go further during September with the Delta Air Lines one-to-one match up to $25,000. - The Lessons Of Bondi Beach | sun-times
The Lessons Of Bondi Beach By Howard Barbanel Dec 18, 2025 Let’s Be Perfectly Blunt -- The Bondi Beach Chanukah Massacre Happened Because The Feckless Woke Liberal Government In Australia Has Allowed Two-Plus Years Of Nonstop Pro-Hamas Pro-Gaza Rallies In Their Major Cities (Much As London Has), Non-Stop Verbal Violence Like The “Long Live The Intifada” Rallies At Sydney’s Bondi Beach (The Footage Is Easily Searchable) Preceding The Massacre, The 100,00-Strong Pro-Hamas Marches Across The Sydney Bridge Along With Attacks On A Melbourne Synagogue And Kosher Market In Sydney This Year As Well. As with most Woke governments, Conservative speech has been squelched and throttled while the most vile radical hate-filled words from Islamists and the far left are actually protected by the government instead of condemned. Warnings from the Australian Jewish community went unheeded and were in fact derided. Given all that, what do you expect will eventually happen? Australia, much as with the rest of the Woke-led Left tolerates and enables limitless Moslem migration – people with no proclivity to acculturate or assimilate into the cultures and societies of the nations to which they migrate. It is a perverse form of reverse colonization whereby the irrationally guilt-stricken majority white population not only welcomes the dilution and subversion of their cultures but actually pays to make it so by proffering extraordinarily generous welfare benefits to the migrants which often exceed those given to their own citizens. The Woke self-loathing of their own national origins, traditions and cultures is alarming and dangerous because this delusional self-inflicted self-flagellation could lead to the end of The West as we’ve known it and that could lead to the end of order and freedom in the world as well which depends on a strong West. The US, not immune, was careening headlong down this path between 2021 and January 2025. The Islamists, in an astonishing alliance with the far left sows chaos and violence in every Western nation – a cancerous malignancy that needs immediate surgery. The murder of 16 Jews at a Chanukah celebration at Bondi Beach can be described as the first official act of the terrorist State of Palestine in Australia. Australia (along with the UK, Canada, France, Spain, and Ireland) officially recognized "Palestine" towards the end of the Gaza War. The complete unmooring of a basic moral compass during the war by Woke Western governments leads in a direct line to the intimidation, harassment, and murder of innocent Jews. Trump should be praised for rolling back all this Woke snowflake pro-Hamas bile across the US government and academia. Were I living in New York City, I'd be very afraid of what is coming under a Mayor Mamdani. Just look to London for a crystal-ball view. London also has a leftist-Moslem mayor. This teaches us that sadly the Chanukah story is still incredibly relevant in our time -- not the menorahs and latkes so much -- but the 30-year war for independence to restore divine revealed morality as related in the Books of the Maccabees which culminated in the recapture and rededication (Chanukat HaMisbeach) of the Temple in Jerusalem. The struggle for Jewish security and freedom continues in our time as Jews are faced with unrelenting and unrepentant hatred all around. Why are Jews so hated? Because the Jewish people stand in the way of evil’s march across the earth. The lights of the Menorah show the world that decent people will not be silenced, cowed, or eradicated. Truth and decency will continue its forward march even in the face of Islamist and Woke headwinds. Previous Next
