- Fail Your Way To Success | sun-times
Fail Your Way To Success By Bryan Golden Aug 13, 2025 Fear of failure is one of the biggest fears people have. Ironically, failure is an integral component of the success process. There are two distinctly different types of failure. Absolute failure is when you give up. Successful failure is when you get back up. Of course, not everything you attempt works out as planned. When striving for a goal, you will likely discover many ways which don’t work as anticipated. Successful people throughout history have experienced this phenomenon. It took Thomas Edison 10,000 tries before he finally discovered a workable formula for a commercially viable lightbulb. When asked how it felt to fail so many times, Edison explained that he hadn’t failed at all. Instead, he had discovered 9,999 ways a light bulb wouldn’t work. Henry Ford went bankrupt twice before his third attempt at a successful automobile manufacturing company finally took hold. R.H. Macy went bankrupt three times before he came up with a successful business model. Dr. Seuss was rejected by 23 publishers before the 24th publisher sold millions of his books. Most job seekers go through this process before landing a position they want. They fail their way to success by sending out hundreds of resumes. Their goal is to get one or more interviews which ultimately lead to at least one job offer. Then, if the job doesn’t meet their expectations, they have to start the process over again. You learned to walk by failing your way to success. Each time you fell down, you struggled to get back up. Each iteration of this process taught you muscle control and balance. You ultimately learned to walk because you refused to give up. There are countless other examples of people who have failed their way to success. Yet, there are also even more people who have failed and then given up. It’s up to you whether you will experience successful failure, or absolute failure. Here are some strategies to use in order to fail your way to success. First, accept failure as a necessary ingredient for success. Each failure gets you one step closer to your objective. Failure is a learning opportunity which shows what requires adjustment. After each failure, determine what went wrong and look for ways to make improvements. Success requires continuous learning. Seek to constantly add to your skills and knowledge. Study successful people to determine what they have done right. Learn from unsuccessful people what not to do. Taking action is crucial for producing results. Always be in motion working towards your objective. Keep trying new approaches until you find a working formula. Get up right away each time you stumble or fall. Leave your comfort zone. You’ve got to try things you have not done before. When what you are doing is not working, you must make positive changes. This requires venturing into the unknown. Failure is likely if you take steps which are too big. Big steps are difficult to manage and complete. Big steps should be broken down into a number of smaller, more manageable steps. For example, opening a large restaurant from scratch is fraught with challenges. If you have little or no experience, your chances of failure increase. Instead, start with a small sandwich shop. As you gain success and experience, you could expand your business. By taking smaller, more manageable steps, failures are more readily recoverable. Don’t fear failure. Embrace successful failure as essential for goal attainment. Use each failure as the invaluable learning tool it is. The way you fail yourself to success is by getting right up whenever you fall down. Bryan is the author of "Dare to Live Without Limits." An Educational Send-Up Of Epic Laughs Awaits - Audiences Are Embracing The Needle-Sharp Satirical Look At Parenting, Privilege, And The Minefield Of Modern Communication South Florida Sun Times Sep 3, 2026 All Voices Matter. But Do Some Matter More Than Others? Throw Yourself Into The Debate As Inclusion, Equality And Education Are Comedically Put To The Test In Island City Stage’s Production Of The 2025 Tony Award-Winning Play, Eureka Day By Jonathan Spector. Tickets Are On Sale Now For This Needle-Sharp Satirical Look At Parenting, Privilege, And The Minefield Of Modern Communication That Runs Through Sunday, September 13th, 2026. The Show Closes Out Island City Stage’s 14th Successful Season Of Bold, Inventive Storytelling. “You can always spot a Eureka Day kid because at soccer games, they’re the ones who cheer when the other team scores.” In this ultra-progressive private school in California, every voice matters—until a mumps outbreak turns harmony into hysteria. In this, a well-meaning board of directors prides itself on consensus and inclusion. But when public health collides with personal beliefs, even the most open-minded parents find themselves at odds. As tensions rise and Zoom meetings spiral into chaos, the community must confront the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, doing the right thing means not pleasing everyone. Although penned prior to COVID-19 but after California’s infamous measles outbreak at Disneyland, the timely, relevant play diagnoses the rapid social decay that can occur when even like-minded people can’t agree. “Eureka Day” has a certain straightforwardness to its tightly drawn plot that belies its sophistication. It’s satirical — and billed as such — in poking fun at Bay Area liberals, and yet it also has a kindness and sensitivity in the way it approaches its characters, including its anti-vaxxers (who are also Bay Area liberals!). Yes, Spector clearly takes sides here in the debate over vaccines, but he makes sure that, in progressive parlance, everyone is “heard.” – Chicago Sun Times. Local theater critics and audiences are already embracing the thoughtfully staged production. “Spector’s strong script receives strong staging from Andy Rogow, who is Island City’s Artistic Director. Rogow’s smooth hand keeps the comedy infused with the play’s serious aspects. Rogow has assembled a solid cast, molded to his vision, to close out Island City’s 14th Season. Michael McClain’s colorful scenic design sets the tone of “Eureka Day,” with its artfully arranged books, naturally color-coordinated, and a poster with diverse hands reaching toward each other and the saying ‘All stories matter.’” – Oline Cogdill, Sun-Sentinel and Florida Theater On Stage "Saw the Tony-Award Winning Play Eureka Day at the iconic Island City Stage. Next-level acting. Brilliant rapid-fire dialogue. Funny. Poignant. Timely." - Matt Tesoriero "I have to say that Eureka Day is an incredible final play for Season 14. I truly loved it and enjoyed it. Keep on presenting great performances for Season 15." - Richard Paul "This is a great show. Triggering. Brilliant." - Baris Ipeker Eureka Day premiered at Aurora Theatre Company in Berkeley, California in April 2018 then moved to New York at Walkerspace the following year. Its European premiere at The Old Vic in September 2022 featured Mark McKinney, Helen Hunt, Susan Kelechi Watson, Kirsten Foster and Ben Schnetzer. In 2024, Eureka Day premiered on Broadway at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre starring Bill Irwin, Amber Gray, Jessica Hecht, Thomas Middleditch, Chelsea Yakura-Kurtz and Eboni Flowers. Island City Stage’s production of Eureka Day is helmed by Artistic Director Andy Rogow and stars Brandon Campbell (Eli), Jen Chia (Meiko), Rita Cole (Carina), Ted DeChatelet (Don), and Maribeth Graham (Suzanne). “When I first read Eureka Day more than five years ago, I knew we had to produce it,” said Rogow. “Through searing comedy and heartfelt storytelling, this explosive play confronts us individually and as a community to question what inclusion for all really means and what we're willing to sacrifice to be inclusive.” Eureka Day Lights and Sound Sponsor is Scott Bennett and Costume Sponsor is Howard Kurzweil. Additional funding is provided by the following: The Our Fund Foundation, The Schubert Foundation Inc., the SHS Foundation, the Warten Foundation, and OutClique. Individual show tickets start at $45. As part of its commitment to the community, Island City Stage is offering South Florida educators a $5 off per ticket discount with the code EDTEACH5. A Women’s Night at the Theater with a pre-show reception sponsored by PJ Hitchins will take place on September 4th. The show runs for one hour and 50 minutes with an intermission. - Stay Healthy, Sunshine: Mental Health & COVID-19 Resources For The New School Year
Stay Healthy, Sunshine: Mental Health & COVID-19 Resources For The New School Year September 1, 2022 Share As schools open across Florida, it’s important for parents, teachers and adults who work with children to stay aware of the ongoing effects of COVID-19 on youth mental health. Many people have struggled with their mental health during the COVID-19 Pandemic, children and teens are no exception. Pre-Pandemic mental health symptoms were already significantly on the rise among our nation’s youth and the COVID-19 Crisis has only escalated the issue. The Health Council of Southeast Florida is bringing awareness to the public that numerous resources exist to help families have an important conversation or find assistance for mental health and wellness. A new interactive and supportive tool for kids is the CDC’s How Right Now Online Guide: https://www.cdc.gov/howrightnow/index.html and helps kids identify how they’re feeling at any given moment and points them to additional resources for handling emotions like fear, grief, anger and sadness. “We want people to know they are not alone in experiencing changes to their mental health or seeing worrisome changes in their children. The important thing is to remember there is help all around. Early intervention gives young people and the adults in their lives the right tools to cope and heal from the current anxieties and traumas they are suffering,” says Andrea Stephenson, Chief Executive Officer for the Health Council of Southeast Florida and sponsor of Florida’s Local Health Councils’ COVID-19 Community Awareness Campaign, “Stay Healthy, Sunshine.” Ms. Stephenson noted to consult your child’s pediatrician, school counselor and local children’s mental health centers for expert guidance and support. Numerous free online resources exist such as those offered by the CDC and the National Association of School Psychologists, which created their supportive site “Helping children cope with changes resulting from COVID-19” at: www.nasponline.org Along with promoting mental health and wellbeing, “Stay Healthy, Sunshine,” encourages continuous health education and Vaccination as “your brightest bet” to proactively reduce the risk of severe health symptoms and hospitalizations that have occurred in Unvaccinated patients. At the campaign’s website: https://www.stayhealthysunshine.org/ and all visitors will find a reliable source of updated information and facts, a Vaccination Finder Link, a list of Florida’s 11 Local Health Councils and connections to assistance for COVID-19-Related Needs. In addition to buying pencils, notebooks and putting school clothes in order, getting kids Vaccinated against COVID-19 is an essential step for getting back into the classroom. All children 6 months and older are eligible for COVID-19 Vaccines, children ages 5 and older who have already been Vaccinated are eligible for a Booster for continued protection. “Being in school, interacting with other students and teachers and participating in extracurricular activities are important to the overall well-being of kids,” said Dr. Kenneth Alexander, Chief of Infectious Diseases at Nemours Children’s Health in Orlando, Florida. “Vaccinations are the best way to protect kids of all ages from COVID-19 and the best way to make sure they stay engaged in the classroom and activities they need and enjoy.” Parents should know that getting children Vaccinated will: • Protect their child. Getting Vaccinated can help prevent serious illness and keep children learning in-person for the entire school year. COVID-19 Vaccines were developed with safety as a top priority and side effects are generally mild, if they occur at all. • Protect the whole family, including vulnerable members of the household. Getting Vaccinated protects children, relatives and other care providers in the household, as well as other friends and loved ones, children spend time with. • Help avoid interruptions to in-person learning. Asymptomatic, Vaccinated close contacts may not need to quarantine at home following an exposure to someone with COVID-19. Getting Vaccinated helps students and staff remain safely in school. • Help prevent extracurriculars, sports and other activities from getting canceled. Activities like sports, band and chorus can be safer and more likely to continue uninterrupted if all participants are up to date with COVID-19 Vaccines. • Allow children to keep doing the things they love. Getting Vaccinated can keep children from missing out on the fun of childhood—like sleepovers, birthday parties, sporting events and more. As children get back to the classroom, they may be exposed to COVID-19 more often. Parents can consider providing their child a comfortable, well-fitting mask to wear for additional protection. Parents should also keep kids home and get them tested if they have symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone who tested positive. Vaccines are available at no cost to everyone aged 6 months or older living in the United States, no matter their immigration or health insurance status. No matter your concern, there are resources available to help guide parents when dealing with their child's physical and mental health wellbeing for the new school year. - Parks, Arts & Entertainment: PAL Comedy Night, Food and Groove & Curci Village Are Gems In Hallandale Beach
Parks, Arts & Entertainment: PAL Comedy Night, Food and Groove & Curci Village Are Gems In Hallandale Beach By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper February 16, 2023 Share This weekend back by popular demand PAL is hosting its Comedy Night at Sports of Kings Theater. On Saturday February 18th. Hosted by comedy legend Bruce Smirnoff with three other comedians including Craig Shoemaker “The Lovemaster” you will have a fun filled night. Tickets are only $50 dollars and include dinner, a buffet and a complimentary drink. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with the show starting at 8:00 p.m. Come out, have fun and support our local kids! Tickets can be purchased at: www.hallandalebeachpal.com/comedy-night Hallandale Beach is home to many parks thanks to our residents that supported our GO Parks Bond. We have added parks and have redeveloped the old ones. We are currently developing Sunrise Park located in the northeast section of the City. We broke ground on the park during COVID-19 and construction has been moving forward as planned. The original small pocket park was expanded and has been designed with a larger playground, extreme fitness course, butterfly garden, restrooms and parking. At our last meeting two residents came forward to ask questions about the park and its elevation. Due to Sea Level Rising, all new construction is required to be built to address flooding. While buildings will be higher all construction is required to keep drainage on their property. Many residents are not aware that cities are not exempt from the process. We must file permits and meet the same standards as all applicants follow the same rules to build this including city properties and infrastructure. The other concern was speeding around the park. Our current Staff was unaware that a while back there was a Commission Directive that I had suggested to install speed calming at all parks. This simply makes sense. Speeding is a real threat around the entire playgrounds and obviously created an additional concern for children's safety. Now that it has been brought up, Staff will be addressing these areas. The next Groundbreaking will be a Curci Village. This hidden gem is located in the southwest section of our City right off Dixie Highway. It is the Historical Home of one of our founding families. The City restored the home with the help of developer contributions. While the house has been open for tours, the building itself is not fully Handicap Accessible. On February 24th we will be hosting a Groundbreaking to start a makeover of the surrounding grounds and the addition of a Handicap Elevator. The property lends itself to be a quaint party facility. I actually officiated the first wedding there a few years back. A new patio area will be added to accommodate a party area. For more Information visit: https://hallandalebeachfl.gov/facilities/facility/details/Curci-House-Historic-Village-6 The last park that is scheduled to be done is Chaves Lake. Currently due to construction delays and the increased cost of construction, we are still working on financing. Originally we were going to make this site a charging area for our Electric Bus System and create a park focused on sustainability. When the parks were planned I had envisioned creating an intercity bike trail connecting all the parks. While formal plans were not done during the initial phases, Staff have continued to work on mobility projects. Not only are we connecting the parks, we were just presented with the plan to create the Hallandale Beach Art Trail. Once completed it will be the longest continuing art trail at 8 Miles in Broward County and maybe the state. Each park will contain a trail head that will be designed with various amenities and art installations. The trail itself will be a marked path. Once a visitor arrives at the trail heads the markings themselves will be artist designs. There will be various artist indicators on the streets drawing visitors to stop by and enjoy the installation. There will be interactive technology and art fixtures. The trail will also be adaptable to change out different art installations. Keeping with arts and entertainment goals here, the Hallandale Beach CRA is once again hosting its Food And Groove. As part of the South Beach Wine and Food Festival and in partnership with Gulfstream Park Pegasus Park will be the place to be on February 25th. Starting at 7:00 p.m. you can come out and try out tastings from over 50 of our local restaurants. In addition to great food and drinks there will also be live entertainment. Please visit: www.SOBEWFF.org for ticket information. If you want a more intimate experience there will be a dinner hosted by by Celebrity Chef Jernard Wells and Icebox Café’s Corporate Executive Chef Omar Martinez at the Ice Box Café. Proceeds from all events support the FIU Hospitality and Tourism Management Program. Tickets to the Celebrity Chef Dinner are $175 and include a complimentary ticket to Food & Groove, a $75 value.
