  • In Sync - Niki Haris & Shelly Berg Live - A Night Of Synchronicity And Soul Presented By Gold Coast Jazz Society | sun-times

In Sync - Niki Haris & Shelly Berg Live - A Night Of Synchronicity And Soul Presented By Gold Coast Jazz Society South Florida Sun Times Jan 1, 2026 When Niki Haris — The Radiant Spirit Of Soul — Meets Shelly Berg — The Maestro Of Motion — The Result Feels Nothing Short Of Inevitable. Some Collaborations Are Carefully Arranged; Others Appear As If Called Into Being, Sparked By An Unseen Rhythm, A Shared Pulse, A Glance Across A Piano And A Microphone. The Partnership Between Haris And Berg Belongs To The Latter. Their Music Is Effortless, Luminous, And Profoundly Alive. Don't Miss This Duo On Wednesday, January 14th, 2026 At Broward Center For The Performing Arts In Fort Lauderdale, Florida As Part Of The Gold Coast Jazz Society's Sizzling Season Series. Haris, daughter of the legendary Gene Harris, was raised in a world where melody was as natural as breath and Gospel grounded her. Jazz expanded her reach. And her years performing alongside icons — from Madonna to Ray Charles — widened her artistic horizon. “I don’t think music should ever lose its joy,” she has said, and her voice proves it. Warm, vital, and generous, Haris sings with the emotion of soul, the storytelling of the blues, and the unbound freedom of jazz. Berg meets her fire with a fluid brilliance of his own. A five-time Grammy® nominee, Steinway Artist, and Dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Berg is known for playing with both wisdom and wonder. Bill Kohlhaase of the Los Angeles Times once described him as “a whirlwind of motion on the piano bench,” and yet beneath the movement lies depth, poise, and clarity. His mastery allows him to listen deeply — to shape the moment while letting others shine. This spirit of musical interplay is precisely what the Gold Coast Jazz Society has championed throughout its history. Together, Haris and Berg embody that mission: creating music that is evolving, expressive, and alive in every measure. “The beauty of jazz,” Berg has said, “is what happens between the notes.” In those spaces, the duo finds connection — yielding performances that breathe, open and unguarded, moving through the room with ease. When the final note lingers, audiences don’t simply applaud; they exhale. Joined by Chuck Bergeron on bass and Gary Novak on drums, the Shelly Berg Trio provides the steady roots beneath Haris’ radiant bloom. In their shared synergy, something takes hold — a seed planted in sound, unfolding long after the last note fades. Event Details Date: Wednesday, January 14th, 2026 Time: 7:45 p.m. Location: Amaturo Theater, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale Presented by: Gold Coast Jazz Society Experience a night of pure synchronicity and soul. • Patriots Support Israel & COHB Retaining Sanitation Department

Patriots Support Israel & COHB Retaining Sanitation Department By Beverly Carawan May 27, 2021 Share Candidate Carla Spalding for 23rd, Beverly Carawan and Suzanne Vazquez of Hallandale & Beaches Patriots. Hallandale & the Beaches Patriots are all about actively taking stands on issues not only in our City but Statewide, Nationally and Internationally. On May 23rd, 2021 a group of members joined to rally with Israelis, Jews and Christians from all over to cheer, dance, pray and hear Passionate speakers. The enthusiasm and the love of Israel, was indeed, palpable. Learning of several City Commissioners’ proposals to ”farm out” the Sanitation Department, angered several members. The awesome sanitation department in our City, not only provides garbage collection and other services, they also help in times of natural disasters, to help secure our City and help clean up debris, afterwards. Outsourcing contracts, often require that there is an uncapped up-charge to be paid, in addition for those services. Mayor Joy Cooper commented by text, "I believe with the new leadership in the City Manager's office and DPW, this service can be retained and actually be provided for, efficiently.” Patriots will actively campaign for keeping the services local, caring about the workers who take pride in COHB and go beyond their job descriptions, to service our residents. At the May 18th, 2021 monthly meeting, Laurie Cardoza-Moore of Proclaiming Justice to the Nations, gave a compelling presentation on what every conservative American patriot, parent and grandparent must know –“Taking Back America’s Children” brings wisdom, insight and an action plan on protecting our next generation of American leadership, turning our nation back to faith, values and freedom. She showed paragraphs from US textbooks actually rewriting history to insidiously indoctrinate children into Socialism and Anti-Semitic feelings. Ruben Young, Candidate for USC District 23, gave a passionate introductory speech. Primary candidates are all welcome to come to the meetings and the club continues to grow larger, every month. Members eagerly discussed planning and task assignment for the MEMORIAL Day Remem-brance Event to be held at 220 Southwest 6th Avenue, Hallandale Beach. Residents including Police & Firefighters are welcome, as we honor those who have sacrificed for our Country and Vets who served or are serving, now. It was decided that hot dogs and hamburgers are free for Gold Star families, Police, Fire and Active-Duty military. Others can buy $1, $2, or $5 tickets good for raffles, food and beverages. Games, contests, prizes and a variety of food should assure a good time. Remember to bring your best apple pie and wear your best patriotic outfit to win! Meetings are every 3rd Tuesday at Upper Deck Grill & Sports Bar from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the next meeting is on June 15th, 2021. This is a Hebrew School of the highest quality that kids can’t wait to go to! An Educational Consulting Company hired by Miami-Dade to rate All County After School Programs, has rated Chabad Chayil’s Program one of the best. • Why Are There CRAs? Part II - The Hallandale Beach CRA Was Established 28 Years Ago | sun-times

Why Are There CRAs? Part II - The Hallandale Beach CRA Was Established 28 Years Ago By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper May 1, 2025 In My Previous Article, I Began Explaining The History Of CRAs And Our CRA. The CRA Was Established 28 Years Ago, And We Had To Decide What To Do With It In Two Years. When I first was elected, I began to understand CRAs and believed in their mission. I explained by saying. “You can have a car but will not be able to go anywhere with a flat tire.” For years, the western part of our City was neglected and that was the target area of improvement. The combined revenues from the City, county, children services council and hospital district have been allocated to address the many needs. The questions became: What if the State passes the Bill to end CRAs by October? Is our work done? Should we continue with the CRA if the state keeps the law? Should we reduce the size? Should we totally sunset it? Should the city continue the programs? What would that look like? What programs would continue? To start, we need to look back on what we have done. Our City was developed parcel by parcel unlike communities today that are preplanned and built with all new Infrastructure. In addition, the area of the northwest that was segregated needed major investment. The parks were crumbling. The pool was closed and filled in. We had plenty of work to do. We had a long list, and these types of projects cost millions of dollars. When the CRA was first established the Base Revenues were a little over $1 Million. We began with a vision of improvements and addition to housing. We began to build a land bank and set aside parcels for affordable housing. We continued to work while the TIF increased bit by bit. By 2016, we had a robust plan to rebuild the three parks in the Northwest, OB Johnson, BF James and Foster. OB Johnson alone cost $14 Million. We borrow money based on a Revenue Bond. This is typically done with CRAs. Rebuilding on time and on Budget laid the groundwork for our citywide Parks Master Plan. This year the Base has grown to over $24 Million annually. The City’s contribution is $14.3 Million. This may sound like a tremendous amount, but projects cost millions of dollars. We paid back the CRA portion of the Revenue Bond and began to look to leverage future TIF. Over the years, we continued to plan many programs. We made an additional Revenue Bond of $20 Million five years ago. This has been utilized to build out all sidewalks and implement lighting throughout the CRA. We have built affordable housing units over the years. Partnered with developers to build market rate housing. I for one pushed for inclusionary zoning which would require a percentage of affordable units for years. This policy is now the norm not simply in Hallandale Beach, but is being implemented throughout the state. Five years ago, we set out to build 50 CRA owned affordable housing units. This was to address gentrification and persevere affordable units for the future. We have all watched Investors’ flipping homes and selling them for twice market rate. This is not bad from a Tax Revenue standpoint but it has priced many of our residents out of the market. To date we are up to 35. Other signature projects include a partnership with Gulfstream and Forest City to build the Village at Gulfstream. We also are building out District8, formerly Schmatta Row and The Fashion Art and Design District. We also continue to provide home improvement programs called Neighborhood Improvement Program, NIP. These include a shutter, window, roof and other improvements to update blighted housing. As mentioned, the life of the CRA as we know it will end in two years. The state every year for years has presented bills to kill CRAs. This year has been no different with a bill to require every CRA to end and have all money earmarked for projects or return to the other contributing tax agencies. So, we as a community have been faced with what to do with our CRA. In the short term and possible long-term depending on what happens in the state. So, what is the true benefit of the CRA if the city keeps it? In short, if it is kept we can enter into an agreement with the City to fund the trust and continue the CRA. The Revenue would be set in place and would have to be spent in the CRA for 10 years. If we do away with the CRA there is truly no guarantee money will be put aside for the programs many of our residents have utilized. The City held a two-hour meeting to debate the pros and cons of the CRA. Next week, I will share that outcome. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . • Sweethearts In Search Of Home: Sadie And Bubbles Are Ready For Their Next Chapter | sun-times

Sweethearts In Search Of Home: Sadie And Bubbles Are Ready For Their Next Chapter South Florida Sun Times Sep 3, 2025 At the Humane Society of Broward County, two very different but equally lovable animals are waiting patiently for their second chance. One is a quirky, shepherd-looking pup with a heart full of loyalty. The other, a spunky little tuxedo kitten with a playful streak. While they may come from different backgrounds and have their own unique personalities, Sadie and Bubbles share one important thing in common: both are ready to fill a forever home with joy, fun, and unconditional love. Sadie: The Short-Legged Sweetheart Sadie may not fit neatly into any one breed category - she resembles a shepherd, but her short legs add a unique twist. What she may lack in pedigree, she more than makes up for in personality. At three years old, Sadie has already worn a few hats in life, including that of a loving mama dog. She arrived at the shelter after being transferred from another facility, and while her past remains a bit of a mystery, her future is looking bright and her heart is full of love. For a brief time, Sadie found herself in a home with an older gentleman who was charmed by her gentle spirit and eager to give her a chance. Although it turned out that Sadie’s energy level and playful nature were a little more than he had expected, their time together revealed a lot about what makes this dog so special. She’s house-trained, sleeps peacefully through the night, and adores her morning and evening walks. Her love of toys, intelligence, and affectionate nature make her a joy to be around. Sadie also gets along well with other dogs and thrives in a loving, active environment. What she needs now is a family who’s ready to embrace her lively spirit—one that will take her on daily adventures, toss around her favorite toys, and provide the affection she so willingly gives. Whether it’s hiking trails or cozying up for a movie night, Sadie is the kind of dog who will be by your side through it all. Bubbles: A Kitten with Big Personality Then there’s Bubbles, a four-month-old tuxedo kitten with energy to spare and a lot of love to give. When Bubbles first arrived at the shelter, he wasn’t in the best condition. A rough start and skin issues left him in need of some serious TLC, but thanks to the dedicated care of the Humane Society’s clinic staff, Bubbles is now healthy, thriving, and more adorable than ever. His black and white fur gives him the appearance of a well-dressed gentleman, but don’t let the tuxedo fool you—Bubbles is all about fun. He’s curious, playful, and endlessly entertaining. He’s also the last of his litter to be adopted, having watched his brothers and sisters find their forever homes one by one. Kittens like Bubbles do best when they have a playmate, which is why adopting two kittens can be a great option. Whether you already have a cat at home or are open to welcoming another kitten alongside Bubbles, he’s sure to bring joy, laughter, and lots of antics to your household. How to Adopt Both Sadie and Bubbles are available for adoption at the Humane Society of Broward County, located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312. If either of these sweethearts has captured your heart—or if you’re simply looking to add a new furry friend to your family—the first step is to complete a pre-adoption application online at: https://www.humanebroward.com The shelter's adoption kennels are open daily starting at 11:00 a.m., giving you ample opportunity to meet Sadie, Bubbles, and many other pets hoping for a home. For questions, you can call: (954) 989-3977 and speak with a knowledgeable staff member. Whether you’re a dog lover seeking a loyal companion or a cat enthusiast looking for a playful sidekick, Sadie and Bubbles are shining examples of the love and companionship that shelter pets have to offer. Their next chapter is just waiting to be written—could it start with you? Sadie - ID#: 701219 Previous Next

  • Cyberwell Commends Meta Oversight Board Decision Overturning Meta’s Decision To Keep Emoji-Based Hate Online | sun-times

Cyberwell Commends Meta Oversight Board Decision Overturning Meta’s Decision To Keep Emoji-Based Hate Online Jewish Connection News Mar 17, 2026 Cyberwell, A Nonprofit And Trusted Partner Of Meta (Facebook, Instagram And Threads), Tiktok And Youtube Working To Combat Online Antisemitism, Commends The Recent Decision By The Meta Oversight Board (OSB) Overturning Meta’s Original Determinations In Two Cases Involving The Use Of Monkey Emojis 🐒 To Target Black Individuals With Racist Abuse. In its February decision, the OSB found that the content violated Meta’s Hateful Conduct policy and called on the company to strengthen both automated and human moderation systems to address “algospeak,” including emoji-based hate. The Board further recommended auditing and regularly updating training data to improve detection of violative emoji use across languages and ensuring that content is routed to reviewers with appropriate linguistic and regional expertise. These recommendations align with CyberWell’s expert public comment submission on this issue, which analyzed the use of algospeak to target the Jewish community. “The Oversight Board’s ruling highlights an important reality: emojis are not neutral when deployed as coded hate,” said CyberWell Founder and CEO Tal-Or Cohen Montemayor. “Algospeak has become a sophisticated tactic used to evade monitoring and moderation while promoting dehumanization and hostility toward minority communities. From what we have observed in the online universe, the popularity of algospeak has increased following the roll out of generative AI platforms and generative AI content on Social Media.” As the Oversight Board recognized, contextual analysis, updated datasets and regionally informed human review are essential to countering these evolving tactics. CyberWell’s monitoring across English- and Arabic-language platforms identified four dehumanizing archetypes of algospeak used to target Jews, including animal emojis such as 🐷, 🐀 and 🐒 comparing Jews to pigs, rats and monkeys; devil emojis such as 😈, 👿 and 👹 portraying Jews as evil or satanic; and proxy code words such as “tiny hat,” “juice,” and the juice box emoji to circulate conspiracy theories about Jewish global control or moral corruption. “For Meta, the next step must be operationalizing the OSB decision and translating its impact to content targeting other minority communities,” added Cohen Montemayor. “By strengthening automated systems, investing in regionally competent human moderation, auditing training data and partnering with specialized external stakeholders, Meta can ensure this decision translates into measurable impact. Addressing complex and fast-evolving forms of online hate requires sustained collaboration between platforms and expert civil society partners.” “The risks of nefarious actors using algospeak and emoji-based coded language to evade monitoring extend beyond antisemitism online. An entire generation is growing up using algospeak and recent reporting has even highlighted its alleged use by Hamas as a covert signal to operatives ahead of the October 7, 2023, terror attack. Social Media platforms and digital shorthand are being weaponized by terrorists and extremist groups for radicalization online and even to carry out attacks. Governments and the international community must keep pace by recognizing this emerging lexicon and the impact of an abused and underregulated digital infosphere,” she added. CyberWell is an independent, tech-based nonprofit combating the spread of antisemitism online, operating globally. Its AI-technologies monitor Social Media in English and Arabic for posts that promulgate antisemitism, Holocaust denial and promote violence against Jews and their allies based on the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. Its analysts review and report this content to platform moderators while indexing all verified posts in the first-ever open database of antisemitic Social Media posts, cataloging it openly for transparency at: app.cyberwell.org. Through partnerships, education and real-time alerts, CyberWell partners with Social Media platforms and digital service companies to help them enforce their policies more effectively, promoting proactive steps against online Jew-hate.
