- A Trickle in History: Pembroke Pines Resident Wins International Writing Contest
A Trickle in History: Pembroke Pines Resident Wins International Writing Contest October 20, 2022 Share Pembroke Pines, Florida resident Elaine Midcoh is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest earning her a trip to Hollywood, a week-long master-class workshop and her winning story will be published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39. Elaine Midcoh (the pen name for Elaine Cohen) lives in Pembroke Pines, Florida. In time she came to love history too and majored in that in college. Her winning story, "A Trickle in History," combines Elaine's love for both sci-fi and history, and is also about family, loyalty and the fight to maintain one's identity in terrible circumstances. This is Elaine's second time appearing in "The Writers of the Future." She was a published finalist in WotF v. 37 with her story, "The Battle of Donasi." Elaine's science fiction has also appeared in the magazines Galaxy's Edge and Daily Science Fiction and in the anthology "Compelling Science Fiction" (Flame Tree Press, Oct. 2022). - Harold Solomon Will Navigate You Through The Quandaries of Medicare
Harold Solomon Will Navigate You Through The Quandaries of Medicare PROFILES May 2021 May 15, 2021 Share Harold Solomon, principal of The Solomon Insurance Group in Fort Lauderdale, is the founder of The Medicare Enrollment Center, a specialty service that guides seniors through the confusion of making healthcare decisions with Medicare. Harold Solomon says, “When it comes to making decisions about health insurance when you are 65 or older, don’t worry. We are here to help.” Harold Solomon, principal of The Solomon Insurance Group in Fort Lauderdale, is the founder of The Medicare Enrollment Center, a specialty service that guides seniors through the confusion of making healthcare decisions with Medicare. Having always been in service industries, Solomon says he began to hear horror stories about decisions involved with making Medicare choices and the limited, sometimes discourteous, assistance from Medicare 800 numbers. That’s when he decided this was a population he would like to help. “When the average person is about to turn 65, he or she begins to research how to enroll in the Medicare program,“ says Solomon. “That’s where the confusion begins as the person is confronted with a myriad of plans and options that require reviewing, comparing and deciding which plan is the best for them.” So, they call a Medicare 800 number. They reach a voice who does not know anything about them, nor their current medical situation or future needs. Likewise, the caller does not know who that person is and probably would have difficulty finding that same individual again. Aside from that, there is no likely follow-up to the caller from the insurance side, even after enrollment. Thinking as to how Harold could help others, he developed a process to accomplish his mission: 1) LISTEN -The first important thing is to listen. Harold asks questions to determine the kind of Medicare health coverage, will meet the client needs. 2) EXPLAIN – Carefully explain all of the best options for each individual. 3) ENROLL - Once decided on the best of the options, Harold explains the enrollment process and enrolls his client, simplifying this burdensome process. Once you become a client, Harold Solomon and his team will stay with you. He will always be available for your questions and will periodically check in with you. He will keep you abreast of any modifications, new benefits or planned policy or premium changes and will work in your best interest at all times. In other words, he and his team will always act proactively on your behalf. Harold Solomon is well-qualified to do this. He is a licensed Medicare specialist. That means he has taken a series of programs and examinations that each require their own certification until the agent can proceed to the next step. It begins with exams for state licensure to sell health insurance. The next step is to pass two state-mandated courses (Preventing Medicare Fraud and General Compliance with Fraud,Waste & Abuse), in order to be certified by AHIP (American Health Insurance Plans). Then the agent must get certified in Errors & Omissions (E&O) Insurance. Following that, the agent must contract with a Medicare wholesaler, and follow further by contracting with multiple other Medicare companies. And, it does not stop there, since certifications must be renewed every year with updated courses. Harold Solomon is licensed in 36 states throughout the country and because Medicare often differs from state to state, sometimes even from county to county, The Solomon Insurance Group has a host of carefully chosen agents in those states to deliver the same personalized service. Mr. Solomon is available to meet with social, condo or business groups to explain the latest options, including the various Medicare supplemental programs that can provide 100% healthcare coverage for the rest of a client’s life. The team at the Solomon Insurance Group will listen to you and provide a health insurance evaluation at no cost. They will review all coverage options available in your area, across all 50 states. A variety of plan options exist for every health care need and it takes someone with total understanding of them to recommend what will be best for you. “My goal is to make Medicare simple and easy to understand,” says Solomon, “and to help our clients make the best choice for their health coverage.” Harold says the the most frequently asked questions are: • Should I get Medicare supplemental • 100% coverage or an Advantage Plan? • How do I know what coverage is best for me? • Does Medicare cover Long Term Care? • Does Medicare cover dental, vision and hearing? • What if I have a family history of cancer, • heart attack or stroke? • Does Medicare cover final life expenses? • Can I get home care as I get older? • Will it cover extensive cancer treatments? • What if I get disabled? What does Medicare cover? • Who can I trust to guide me as I begin to • lose my decision capabilities? Harold Solomon acts in a fiduciary capacity. That means he is bound ethically to act in your best interests. You will know you have the best coverage, at the best price. We want our Medicare clients to enjoy life, not worry about their Medicare health coverage. In addition to Medicare supplemental insurance and Medicare Advantage plans, the Solomon Insurance Group can offer further protection plans that include Hospital indemnity Insurance, Long-term Care Insurance, Heart Attack & Stroke Coverage, Dental, Vision & Hearing Benefit Plans, Cancer Lump Sum Benefits, and Final expense coverage. The Solomon Insurance Group is highly recommended by All Star Public Adjusters. - Hallandale Beach Infrastructure Update
Hallandale Beach Infrastructure Update By Joy Cooper - Hallandale Beach Mayor July 28, 2022 Share Over this past weekend there was another Water Main Break on Three Islands. On behalf of the entire City Commission, I want to first apologize for the inconvenience this creates to everyone’s daily life. Our City’s Public Works Department has been amazing with finding the source of the Break and timely fixing it. In this case, our work over the past year was replacing older paid off valves so that we could contain the broken area more efficiently. This 16-inch Main is over 50 years old and is part of our current scheduled replacement. The RFP is underway for this large-scale infrastructure project. Regretfully, when Water Pipes break residents in the area are placed under a precautionary boiled water notice. This means water used to drink, cook, make ice, clean dishes and brush your teeth must be brought to a rolling boil for at least a minute before use. The alert stays in place until the water passes the safety test. This typically is two to three days. During these events, our City Information Officer works utilizing many tools to alert impacted residents. We use robocalls, text alerts, email and social media to make sure that the residents are updated with emergencies. I always encourage residents and business owners to sign up on our website to make sure that you are included in our robust messaging system. Visit: https://www.cohb.org/ and click on the Communications and Media Tab. Scroll down and you will come to NotifyMe and then Emergency. You can sign up for both. NotifyMe is for all meetings and non-emergency events. If you simply want to get emergency alerts, follow the prompts. You can also sign up for Broward Alerts on our site. I strongly recommend everyone to sign up since we are in the middle of Hurricane Season. As Mayor, I try to make sure to write about issues impacting our residents. While many of our residents that have lived here for a while know what is transpiring, we also have many new residents that often have questions about how we implement certain policies and fees. One such question was about utility bills. The new owner was surprised as to why she was receiving a bill even though she was out of town for a month. I want to share the information with all our readers. Our Utility Bills contain: Water, sewer, storm water and trash removal. Even if you are not in your home there are fees charged as base fees. The base fees for example for water run approximately $21 base with 4.23 per 0-5000 usage rate. If you use more gallons, the rate per 5,000 goes up. Both water and sewer are around the same. Also on the bill is storm water which is a flat rate of 7.37. As a note, we will be looking at our City’s Rates. We do this every few years. Storm water will be of particular interest since we now have large-scale flooding infrastructure that will need to be maintained and expanded. Trash is also charged monthly with a base of 27.87 with a $2-Dollar Recycling Fee. Residents can add containers at an Additional Fee. We are currently looking into these rates. For those following the outsourcing of our trash service I am happy to report it is off the table. I have been very vocal about not contracting out due to the fact that we lose control and there will always be built-in automatic rate increases. With this said we need to evaluate the entire program and adjust operations and fees to make sure that they are sustainable. So, you can see that the typical bill for ALL Utilities can run around $75 Dollars before the gallon rates kick in for water and sewer. The next question is, “Why would I be charged a fee when I am not at home?” This type of billing is done in many cities and companies. It provides a base rate to make sure that every property helps to cover the cost of infrastructure. Pipes, pumping systems, treatment plants, etc. The Usage Fee is just that, charges individual properties for the amount of what they use. This creates fairness especially with the large number of seasonal residents in Hallandale Beach. It also helps us have a stable funding source to budget for infrastructure repairs and replacements. It is like cable. Even if you are not at home, they charge a flat rate. FPL charges a $25 flat rate too. I do want to let you know that over the past few months there was a problem with our electronic meter readers. Our Staff has been collaborating with the Vendor and trying to correct the reading problems. In addition, our Billing Staff has finally addressed multiple billing issues and adjustments. No late fees or anything to be charged during this time. We have many online options to pay Utility Bills and review your Account. Another good practice is to make sure that all residents check every fixture in their home. The smallest leak or drop can add up to gallons. I want to thank our wonderful Staff in DPW. Under the leadership of Director Jeff Odoms they are taking our City’s infrastructure to the next level. The emergency repairs are one component. Over the next months and years, our residents should rest assured that our team is knowledgeable, ready and making sure that services are in place for years to come! As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out to my office at: (954) 457-1318. On my cell/text at: (954) 632-5700. Or email me at: jcooper@cohb.org < Previous News Next News >

- Celebrate Women’s History Month: The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami Offers New Exhibitions
Celebrate Women’s History Month: The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami Offers New Exhibitions March 9, 2023 Share Through the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA)’s continued efforts to include diverse voices and perspectives, the museum is offering a robust series of educational and public programming to commemorate Women’s History Month this March. Currently on view are MOCA’s newest exhibitions, Leah Gordon’s “Kanaval” and “Didier William: Nou Kite Tout Sa Dèyè.” On view through April 16th, 2023, “Kanaval” is a survey by Photographer, Filmmaker, Curator and Writer Leah Gordon that documents twenty years of Carnival in Haiti. Curated by MOCA Curator Adeze Wilford, the exhibition consists of a series of black-and-white photographs taken on a mechanical medium format camera. The images are contextualized by a series of oral histories relayed by various troupe leaders, who also oversee the design of the costume and generate the narratives surrounding Carnival. Their stories reflect the wealth of invention, fable and self-generated mythology prevalent in much of Haitian culture. The photographs will be accompanied by a new feature-length documentary on the Carnival providing a kinetic counterpoint to the portraits. Also, on view through April 16th, 2023, “Didier William: Nou Kite Tout Sa Dèyè” is the largest solo presentation of Didier William’s career. Translated as “We’ve Left That All Behind,” the show presents an in-depth look at the Haitian-born, North Miami-raised Artist’s career and memory among the very neighborhood where he once grew up. In a blend of personal reflections, biographical anecdotes, art historical moments, some of the works in the show recontextualize historical iconographies and ideas, stripping them of their “known” truths and transforming each into something entirely new. By doing so, William playfully and unapologetically reclaims autonomy over a fragmented record of history, engaging his personal connection to the complexity of immigrant narratives and queer identity to create opportunity for investigation and redemption. MOCA’s March programming includes: MOCA Makers Printmaking workshop with Vinicius De Oliveira will be Saturday, March 11th, 2023, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. MOCA Makers are a series of adult art workshops, which bring forward an artistically interested public to work with and learn from local artists in South Florida. Topics such as figure drawing, printmaking and portrait painting are hosted for all levels of participants. Art Packs are available for purchase from the MOCA Shop. This March, participants will be studying printmaking with artist and educator Vinicius De Oliveira. The event is Free and you can RSVP at: https://111401.blackbaudhosting.com/111401/MOCA-Makers-11Mar2023 Virtual Conversations at MOCA will be held Wednesday, March 15th, 2023, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Experience this conversation with MOCA as it explores an intersection of identities. It is often said the Vodoun makes space for difference and that it challenges the strictures of perceived heteronormativity. But, what about Haiti and its diaspora? Drawing on Didier William’s work, how might artists develop and deploy black, queer aesthetics and sensibilities to challenge heteronormativity and dysfunctional power dynamics in Haiti and beyond? Cost: The event is Free and you can RSVP at: https://111401.blackbaudhosting.com/111401/Conversations-at-MOCA-Queer-Black-and-Being--Haitian-Virtual Impromptu, A Miami City Ballet Pop Up Performance will be Friday, March 24th, 2023 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Join MOCA on the Plaza for a special performance as part of “Impromptu: A Miami City Ballet Pop-Up Performance Series.” “Impromptu” is choreographed and performed by Miami City Ballet’s world-class professional dancers, offering audiences an accessible, fresh way to experience art in unique settings, like MOCA’s Plaza.
