Making Strides Walk-A-Thon To Thwart Breast Cancer By Ira Liebowitz November 3, 2022 Share A sea of pink converged Saturday in Downtown Fort Lauderdale as some 15,000 clad in the color of the day, a few with pink hair or butterfly wings, came out to honor loved ones and raise funds and awareness at the Annual Making Strides Get-Together at Huizenga Park to thwart Breast Cancer. Unlike last year's event, when attendees had to combat rain and slog through puddles, Mother Nature cooperated to grace them with a picture-perfect, cloudless morning. Aside from the weather, several of the festivities and presentations remained the same as well as a jubilant spirit and smiling faces. WSVN7 Meteorologist Vivian Gonzales attended again this year. The event kicked off with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from Pembroke Pines who performed a dignified American Flag Presentation. Folks on the amphitheater stage and milling about the park grounds, put their hands to their heart or saluted for the Pledge of Allegiance. Tiffani Dishner sang the National Anthem. Speakers from the American Cancer Society, Sylvester Comprehensive Center and other Organizations introduced the occasion and shared info. "Creating a future free from Cancer runs deep.... Today we are celebrating the survivors and thrivers." said a representative. That sentiment conveying caring and camaraderie was echoed throughout the day. The ACS has fought Cancer for more than a century. During the past 30 years, Breast Cancer fatality has declined in women by 41 percent. Today there are some 3.8 million survivors of Breast Cancer. Each year some 280,000 succumb to the disease, about one in a hundred being men. The goal at this event is to raise $800,000. Edward Aguilar, the main sponsor from Seminole Hard Rock, presented on stage a check for $100,000 to the ACS. Hard Rock has raised more than $1 Million Dollars to fight Cancer during the last nine years, it was noted. Like at last year's event, for a $100 donation one was invited to be photographed smashing - that's right, a pink guitar! Sort of like The Who's Pete Townsend. Purple robots towering at least seven feet tall added color to the already festive occasion. Piquant sights highlighted the picturesque Riverwalk and the iconic Las Olas Boulevard, dotted by yachts, café patios and verdant foliage. Air temperature seemed to be in the mid-seventies, but veered into the mid-eighties by late morning. Participants partook of cold bottles of water handed out at intervals along the 3-mile route. At tribute boards people could post a message on a card, free of charge, honoring their loved ones who had succumbed to Cancer. Brittany Balom and Courtney Myles, the "Butterfly Girls," from Miramar had pink wings on. "Supporting my mom!" Brittany commented. Kristie Wilcox: "Breast Cancer affects us in many ways & more than one! Outfit Training supports BCA Month!" - Outfit Training Success Manager. John Pean Pean from Miami, Florida, noted he was there to "support a friend who is in Remission." Scoutmaster, Andres Alvarez, "We're excited to be returning for our sixth year as Presenters Of The American Flag. This event, in my opinion, is the most important to help support our fight against Breast Cancer in our community. We're blessed to be a part of it." Our canine population was well represented. Big and small, feisty and sheepish, Poodles, Chihuahuas, German Shepherds and more! This reporter had the privilege of having his devoted Siberian Husky-Mix, Daisy, walk with him. Last year Daisy, to be 13 on November 22nd, had met a "sweet" lookalike named Brownie. Today she met Max and Nanook. Hopefully, this is not her "last Hoorah, "at a Walk-A-Thon. People love her and vice-versa! Rebecca said of her eight-year-old Siberian Husky, Nanook, "she's a funny person." Upon leaving, a few blocks away from the park a disc jockey on the sidewalk was playing festive music. Walking past, a hit song from the 1970’s piqued my attention. "We are family" by Sister Sledge. Elected officials need to be made aware of what the issues are, reach out to the proper agencies and become agents of change in search of a solution. In January 2023, I participated in a Public Meeting at our NSE SIB K-8 School to discuss issues affecting our children’s educational experience. As a result, a “taskforce” was created with representatives from MDCPS, SIB community leaders and parents. Many steps were promptly put into action to address cleanliness, teacher shortages, security, etc. However, despite the progress made and due to the overcrowding situation, MDCPS made the decision to put a cap on new enrollments. It is extremely unfair for residents of SIB to be denied enrollment in our school because students from other cities are taking their spots. Another school must be built. Nevertheless, we in the taskforce continue to look for short and long-term solutions. In another instance, residents of Poinciana Island (my home residence) approached me seeking help in communicating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and DERM regarding their finger pier applications. I am proud that after several meetings and reviews with these agencies, we were able to update the permit process to bring the unpermitted structures to compliance and for owners to apply directly to the agencies to build their finger pier. Line an 18-by-13-by-1-inch baking pan with foil. Lightly spray foil with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. In a medium bowl, toss tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, oregano or dill weed, salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Place fish pieces, skin side down, on one side of the prepared pan. Sprinkle it with remaining pepper. Lightly press Feta cheese on top of fish. Pour tomato mixture on the other side of the prepared pan. Bake, uncovered, for 12-15 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Place Salmon on serving plates. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in onions, carrots and sweet bell peppers. Saute vegetables for about 5 minutes, or until they brighten in color and begin to soften. Add tomatoes, salt, pepper and garlic. Cook and stir for 1 minute to allow tomatoes to release juices. Pour reserved pasta water into the skillet, stirring well. Bring sauce to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 3 minutes. Taste sauce and adjust seasonings, as desired. Transfer drained pasta to skillet along with lemon zest and smoked Provolone cheese, tossing well to coat. Drink God’s Water, Help Save Haiti By Austin Torres - Aventura Digest September 16, 2021 Share Local Entrepreneur Creates Charity to Help Victims of the Earthquake in Haiti On August 14th 2021 Haiti was stricken by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, claiming the lives of 2,248 people and injuring over 12,000 others. Homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods have all taken a brutal hit, leaving thousands of citizens to pick up the broken pieces. This event marks yet another moment in history of tragedy for Haiti. Paul-B Carré, a local citizen, real estate guru and auction bidding specialist, and ambassador to the Diaspora Power– an organization whose goal it is to rally Haitians across the globe to help support causes that could improve the conditions of their home country– saw in this tragedy a God-given chance to give back to his community. Upon receiving a pallet of water from Syllas food store, a supporter of the Diaspora Power, Paul had an epiphany. The cost of shipping the pallet of water (60 cases of 40 bottles, 2400 in total) to Haiti, is more than the price of the water itself. Realizing this, Paul decided that it would be more effective to give the water away in exchange for donations that could be sent directly to the communities affected by the earthquake where they could spend it on water as well as other necessary resources. To implement this, Paul has created his own official charity: “It’s called God’s Free Water, it’s essential to life. I realized I can give this water out for free, thirsty people can get the water they need and we can also help Haiti get the support they need, and perhaps I can get a donation in return from those that want to give back,” said Paul. Paul’s philosophy is simple. We have been blessed with an abundance of water, so why not give it away for free? “It’s natural, it’s from God. I just feel it’s right to give the water back.” Paul will work with volunteers to hand out water for free with an option to donate. All proceeds will be sent to the victims of the Haiti earthquake. But it doesn’t end there, Paul also hopes to expand his charity and give to other causes, choosing at the moment to focus more on Haiti. “Although everything we receive at the moment will be sent back to Haiti, our program will not be limited to this. We will keep on passing out water on the streets with volunteers and I will accept donations for different causes such as the children of St. Jude, Camillus House for the homeless, and any other just causes that need support. I just want to give back to humanity,” said Paul. From the moment he was born, Paul was thrust into an environment that put special emphasis on communal participation and social and political awareness. His father, Hubert Carré, was a Haitian diplomat for over 45 years, under 4 different governments, and spoke 7 languages. Due to his father’s occupation Paul moved frequently and was raised not only in Haiti, but also South America, Europe, and Africa. This upbringing would go on to influence Paul in notable ways, inspiring him to be a contributing member of his community. Since July of 2021, Paul has been acting Ambassador to the Diaspora Power, a non-profit 501c3 organization whose objective is to work globally with Haitian communities in the Diaspora to bring an end to hunger and to considerably reduce poverty in Haiti. According to the UN, 1.5 million people are facing food insecurity, and 6.7 million are struggling to meet their food needs on a regular basis. This has been further exacerbated by the 2010 and 2021 earthquakes. As ambassador, Paul’s works together with other members of the Haitians diaspora (those living in different parts of the globe other than their homeland) to help directly fund projects that could benefit their community back home. “As an ambassador my job is to unify and put together projects where I can get the community together to donate towards specific projects that can help out back home.” Although he has only recently begun his position as Ambassador, Paul has worked with the Diaspora Power and other organizations for several years. On January 18th, After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Paul worked with the Gaskov Clergé Foundation to team up with doctors and bring supplies back to the communities afflicted by the catastrophe. “In 2010 I rallied 60 doctors and went on to a C-130 out of the air force here in South Florida and was part of a team that brought back home 60,000 pounds of medication and water,” said Paul. As a pillar of the community, it’s Paul’s greatest ambition to continue to give back as much as he can. Aside from raising money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake and other organizations with the express intent of making the world a better place, Paul also hopes to get the youth, especially those that have a troubled history, involved as volunteers who he can also mentor on how to give back to the community and teach them how to give back to the community. At the moment, Paul intends to begin handing out water on the corner of I-95 and Hallandale Blvd where he will also hand out pamphlets with verses from the Bible, but he also intends on targeting other locations as he begins to gather more volunteers for his organization. God’s Free Water is currently accepting and inviting any citizens to join in and volunteer. Currently, water is being stored by supporter and friend, Aaron Moss, President and coowner of Appetites, a custom catering solutions business that specializes in cold meal packaging, and shipping. Together, they are hoping to also begin sending out 50,000 meals bi-weekly to those in need, paid for by the Diaspora Power. Avant Garde Safe Route To School Sidewalk Improvement Program Underway In Hollywood January 26, 2023 Share As part of the Safe Route to School Grant Program, the Federal Highway Administration through the Florida Department of Transportation is funding approximately $765,407 of sidewalk improvements in Hollywood’s North Central neighborhood. The scope of the project includes adding 13,225 linear feet of new 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalks to fill in missing links along 26 different blocks that serve Oakridge Elementary School, Beachside Montessori Village, the Avant Garde Academy and Dowdy Field in Hollywood. Sidewalks are being constructed on one side of these neighborhood streets in the following locations: Wilson Street: North side of the street from North 26th Avenue to Dixie Highway. North 25th Avenue: West side of the street from Arthur Street to the alley between Arthur Street and Cleveland Street and the east side from that point north to Wilson Street. Roosevelt Street: South side of the street from North 23rd Avenue to Dixie Highway. Cleveland Street: South side of the street from North 24th Avenue to Dixie Highway. Arthur Street: North side of the street from North 24th Avenue to North 22nd Avenue, and the south side from that point to Dixie Highway. Garfield Street: South side from North 26th Avenue to just east of North 22nd Avenue. Hayes Street: North side from North 26th Avenue to North 25th Avenue, then the south side to North 24th Avenue and then north side to North 22nd Avenue. Grant Street: North side from North 26th Avenue to North 22nd Avenue. North 25th Avenue: East side from Johnson Street to Arthur Street. Sidewalks will be constructed along the property line. Property owners adjacent to the new sidewalk locations are asked to remove all personal private property, including plants, walls, pavers or other structures that could be in conflict with the new sidewalk path. Personal items that have not been removed at the start of construction will be removed by the City’s contractor and discarded. The preservation of existing street trees is a priority. As such, when possible, sidewalks will be rerouted around trees in an effort to preserve the tree while ensuring a safe path for pedestrians. Permits will be obtained when removal is necessary. Removal will only take place as a last resort. During construction, partial roadway lane closures are possible when workers are present on the job site. A Lot Is Happening In Hollywood June 15, 2021 Share Mural Project Dedication, Community Pools Are Open & ArtsPark Movie Night Join us on Friday, June 18th at 10 a.m. to celebrate the completion of the community-led project to create the Sheridan Street wall mural. The dedication ceremony will be held at the 2500 Block of N. 28th Avenue, just east of the I-95 northbound ramp at Sheridan Street. Back in February 2016, Hollywood resident Bettina August began a community effort to “paint the ugly wall” that runs along the north side of Sheridan Street just east of I-95, functioning as a sound barrier. After a several year fundraising effort, a call to artists and working through all of the logistical matters, Artist Cat Ferraz and her partner Nick Rother were selected to paint a 460-foot ocean-themed mural on the “ugly wall.” The finished product has turned this spot into a welcoming passage which is one of the main access points to the City of Hollywood with more than 40,000 cars passing this location every day. The Dedication will include: • Remarks from City officials • Recognition of the Volunteer Project Coordinator, Bettina August • Recognition of Project Sponsor Pinnacle Art in Public Places Program, Louis Wolfson III, Partner • Reflections from Mural Artist Cat Ferraz The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony to celebrate the completion of the community-led project.
