  • Burning The Flag Or Torching The Constitution - Only One Destroys Freedom | sun-times

Burning The Flag Or Torching The Constitution - Only One Destroys Freedom John & Nisha Whitehead Sep 3, 2025 Cancel Culture - Political Correctness Amped Up On Steroids, The Self Righteousness Of A Narcissistic Age, And A Mass-Marketed Pseudo-Morality That Is Little More Than Fascism Disguised As Tolerance-Has Shifted Us Into An Age Of Intolerance. Nothing illustrates this more clearly than President Trump’s latest executive order calling for criminal charges for anyone who burns the American flag—a symbolic act long upheld by the Supreme Court as protected political expression. This push is not about patriotism—it is political theater. For an administration under fire—from the Epstein cover-up to tanking approval ratings and mounting constitutional crises—flag burning serves as symbolic outrage staged as political cover, a culture-war diversion to distract from more serious abuses of power. Consider the timing: on the very same day Trump announced penalties for flag burning, he also signed an executive order establishing “specialized” National Guard units to patrol American cities under the guise of addressing crime. This is the real bait-and-switch: cloak military policing in patriotic theater and hope no one notices the deeper constitutional violations taking root. In other words, Trump’s flag fight is a decoy. Yet in today’s climate, where mobs on the left and censors on the right compete to silence speech they dislike, even this form of protest is under fire. In 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Texas v. Johnson that burning the flag of the United States in protest is an act of protected free speech under the First Amendment. Today, that ruling matters more than ever, yet there is an important distinction: the First Amendment protects the right to burn your own flag as political expression but not to vandalize public property in the process. That distinction matters: the Constitution protects dissent, not destruction. And it’s exactly that distinction—between lawful protest and punished expression—that makes the flag-burning debate so important. Although the courts have held that symbolic acts of protest deserve the highest protection, the culture wars have turned those protections into battlegrounds. For decades, mobs, politicians, and bureaucrats alike have worked to silence unpopular or politically incorrect opinions. Whether it’s a student disciplined for refusing to recite the Pledge, an athlete demonized for kneeling during the National Anthem, or a dissenter deplatformed for expressing views outside the mainstream, the message is the same: toe the line or be punished. This new Age of Intolerance is not limited to the cultural left. President Trump has been waging his own right-wing brand of cancel culture: sanitizing museums, scrubbing exhibits of “unpatriotic” narratives, renaming anything that doesn’t fit his preferred version of history, and punishing dissenters with executive orders and loyalty oaths. What the left enforces with trigger warnings and deplatforming, Trump enforces with prosecutions, cultural re-branding and militarization. They are snowflakes of a different political persuasion, but the result is the same: dissent is silenced, history is rewritten, and only the approved narrative remains. And here’s the danger: when symbolic outrage is used as a political smokescreen for militarization and constitutional erosion, it distracts Americans from the machinery of control being built in real time. The fight over flags and museums is not just about culture—it is the smokescreen for expanding surveillance, militarization, and police-state powers. That is why the sudden outrage over disrespect for the country’s patriotic symbols rings so hollow. In a culture where the flag is already plastered on bikinis, beer koozies, and billboards—with little outcry—it’s not reverence that’s driving this crackdown. It’s control. Worse, it divides the nation and distracts us from the steady rise of the police state. Let’s not confuse patriotism (love for or devotion to one’s country) with blind obedience to the government’s dictates. That is the first step towards creating an authoritarian regime. There is nothing patriotic about the lengths to which Americans have allowed the government to go in its efforts to dismantle our constitutional republic and shift the country into a police state. The irony is this: it’s not anti-American to be anti-war or anti-police misconduct or anti-racial discrimination—but it is anti-American to be anti-freedom. What we are witnessing, in the flag-burning debate and far beyond, is a culture war in which political tribes police thought, speech, and even symbolic protest. Those who refuse to conform—whether they burn a flag, take a knee, question authority, or simply refuse to parrot the official line—are demonized, deplatformed, and sometimes even criminalized. The upshot of all this editing, parsing, banning and silencing is the emergence of a new language, what George Orwell referred to as Newspeak, which places the power to control language in the hands of the totalitarian state. Under such a system, language becomes a weapon to change the way people think by changing the words they use. And while Orwell imagined it as dystopian fiction, we are living its early chapters now. The First Amendment is being whittled down not just by government decree but by a culture that rewards conformity and punishes divergence. In such an environment, burning a flag is not the real danger. The real danger is a society that no longer tolerates free thought at all. The Framers of the Constitution knew very well that whenever and wherever democratic governments had failed, it was because the people had abdicated their responsibility as guardians of freedom. They also knew that whenever in history the people denied this responsibility, an authoritarian regime arose which eventually denied the people the right to govern themselves. Citizens must be willing to stand and fight to protect their freedoms. And if need be, it will entail criticizing the government. This is true patriotism in action. Love of country will sometimes entail carrying a picket sign or going to jail or taking a knee or burning a flag, if necessary, to challenge injustice. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the real danger isn’t someone burning the flag. The greatest danger we face is the U.S. government torching the Constitution. • Sipping On Spice: Savoring The Spicy Side Of Wine

Sipping On Spice: Savoring The Spicy Side Of Wine August 15, 2024 Share Earthy, mineral, spicy … these terms are commonly used to describe wine. The spiciness in wine is like the spiciness in food, it is not a flavor, but a sensation. Spiciness in wine is one of those intriguing characteristics that can elevate a wine and add complexity to it. It’s a sensation that parallels the heat from a Chili Pepper or the warmth from a touch of Cinnamon. But what exactly makes a wine spicy? How can we identify it, and more importantly, how can we enjoy a Spicy Wine with food? What is a Spicy Wine? When we talk about Spicy Wine, we’re referring to Wines that evoke a sensation of warmth and tingling on the palate, much like certain spices do. This spiciness can manifest in various forms. For instance, a Wine with a Peppery character can remind one of the sharp bite of Black Pepper or the more subtle heat of White Pepper. On the other hand, a Wine that exudes Baking Spice Flavors might reveal the sweetness and warmth of Cinnamon or Nutmeg, adding a familiar touch to its profile. Other Wines might bring to mind the slightly sweet and woody heat of Cloves or Ginger, offering yet another layer of spiciness. Certain Wines are particularly known for their spicy profiles. Syrah, for example, is the most common Spicy Wine, known for its Black Pepper notes, especially in Wines from regions like the Rhône Valley in France or the Barossa Valley in Australia. Meanwhile, Grüner Veltliner, the iconic Austrian White Wine, displays a White Pepper spiciness, setting it apart among White Wines. Gewürztraminer, with its exotic and aromatic profile, often carries a Ginger-Like spiciness, along with Floral and Lychee notes. In fact, “Gewürz” means “spicy” in German. On the other hand, Zinfandel, a robust and often fruity red, can express a range of spicy characteristics, from Cinnamon to Cloves, depending on the region and Winemaking Style. Why Does My Wine Taste Spicy? Credit Midjourney 2.png The spiciness in Wine can be attributed to several factors, primarily the Grape Variety and the Winemaking process. The inherent spiciness in certain wines often comes from the Grape variety itself due to specific chemical compounds present in the Grapes. Rotundone is the primary aroma compound responsible for Peppery notes in Wine. Found in Grape Skins, rotundone is particularly prominent in varieties like Syrah and Grüner Veltliner, making the wines feel Peppery and adding a layer of complexity to their flavor profiles. Similarly, 4-Vinylguaiacol is known for contributing clove-like aromas and flavors. It’s more commonly found in Wines made from Grapes that have a higher Phenolic Content, influenced by the Grape Variety and growing conditions. Beyond the Grape Variety, the Winemaking and aging processes can also play a significant role in developing spiciness in wine. One of the key factors here is the use of Oak Barrels. When Wine is aged in Oak Barrels, it can take on additional spicy characteristics. The type of Oak, the level of toasting, and the length of aging all influence the final profile. American oak, for example, tends to impart more Vanilla and Coconut Notes, while French Oak can contribute subtle spices like Clove and Cedar. The interaction between the Wine and the Wood allows for the development of complex flavors that enhance the Wine’s overall spiciness. What Food to Pair with Spicy Wine? When it comes to Wine and food pairing, the key is to complement and balance the Wine’s spicy notes with the right dishes. Just like light foods with Crisp Wines, sweet dishes with Sweeter Wines, one approach is to pair Spicy Wine with Spicy Food. Similar flavor profiles can create a harmonious match where the flavors complement each other. For example, pairing Syrah with Pepper-Crusted Meats can enhance the Black Pepper notes in the Wine, creating a cohesive and robust flavor experience. Grüner Veltliner pairs wonderfully with Spicy Asian Cuisine, balancing the heat of dishes like Thai Green Curry or Sichuan Cuisine with its fresh acidity and White Pepper spiciness. Gewürztraminer can be a great match for dishes that have a touch of sweetness and Mild Spice, such as Indian Curry. The Ginger-Like Spice in the Wine enhances the overall richness of the dish. Similarly, Zinfandel pairs well with hearty, smoky dishes like Barbecue Ribs, where the Clove and Pepper notes in the Wine complement the smoky, tangy flavors of the Ribs. In addition to the dishes with similar taste profiles, it's helpful to think about broader categories of foods that pair well with Spicy Wines. Meats, particularly those with rich, robust flavors, often match well with Spicy Reds like Syrah or Zinfandel. The spiciness in the Wine can stand up to the bold flavors of the meat. For White Wines with spicy notes, like Grüner Veltliner or Gewürztraminer, consider lighter fare that still offers complex flavors. Asian and Mexican Cuisine, with its intricate balance of Sweet, Sour, Salty, and Spicy Elements, can be an excellent match, as can dishes with a touch of Sweetness or Mild Spice, which help to highlight the spicy characteristics of the Wine. Spiciness in wine is a multifaceted and enchanting characteristic that adds depth and excitement to the Wine. Whether it’s the Peppery Punch of a Syrah or the warm, Gingery Notes of a Gewürztraminer, Spicy Wines offer more complexity to the Wine and pleasure to the overall tasting experience. < Previous News Next News >

  • Celebrating the unique flavors of Hispanic Cuisine

Celebrating the unique flavors of Hispanic Cuisine (BPT) September 30, 2021 Share Hispanic Heritage Month offers an ideal opportunity to celebrate Hispanic contributions to the U.S., inviting everyone to explore the unique art, music, talent, innovation - and food - that has enriched the American experience. These vital cultural influences come from regions spanning Mexico, Central and South America to the Caribbean and Spain itself. Possibly the most impactful influence from Hispanic culture centers on food. American food culture is invigorated by these exciting inspirations. Hispanic foods make an impact, from barbacoa to birria Traditional foods with Hispanic roots are as diverse and varied as the people themselves, with many dishes adapted from place to place to showcase local ingredients - or reflect unique cultural and regional differences. To raise awareness of Hispanic culinary contributions, Rumba Meats is partnering with Latino food and lifestyle influencers to share their recipes and stories behind the flavors Hispanic culture has contributed to the U.S., on the brand's website and social media. Barbacoa A favorite of Instagram influencer Saraa Franco, this traditional dish dates back to pre-Hispanic times. The Mayans developed this technique of cooking meat wrapped in agave leaves in a hole in the ground. Spanish explorers brought barbacoa north from the Caribbean into the present-day U.S. in the 16th and 17th centuries, and "barbecue," as it's known, has only gotten more popular in the last 500 years. "There are lots of places in the U.S. where you can find really good barbacoa tacos," said Franco. "Or you can learn how to make barbacoa yourself." Franco makes barbacoa using Rumba Meats beef cheek. "There's something so special about food that reminds me of my childhood," said Franco. "Waking up in my grandfather's ranch, the smell of coffee, homemade tortillas - and barbacoa being prepared so we could all have breakfast as a family." Birria Birria is easily one of the greatest, most widely appreciated foods that Hispanic culture has contributed to America. This traditional Mexican stew originated in Jalisco, Mexico, where it was made with goat meat. Today, in the U.S., birria is made with other meats. Lifestyle influencer Petia Mitchell uses Rumba Meats beef cheek in her birria recipe. Teresa Barajas, whose grandfather had a birria stand in Jalisco, uses hind shank and marrow bones. In fact, birria has undergone lots of popular adaptations. It's having a moment in the U.S. as Quesabirria, a taco variation on the dish, became a social media hit. However you make it, birria is a savory, satisfying, time-honored treasure that fosters inventiveness and experimentation - making it a great choice for any Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Birria recipe from Petia Mitchell Servings: 4 (stew) or 10 (tacos); Prep time: 30 minutes; Cook time: 11 hours Ingredients 1 package (about 2 pounds) Rumba Meats Beef Cheekmeat 2 teaspoons beef bouillon powder 1 teaspoon fresh cracked pepper 1 teaspoon granulated garlic powder 3 cups water 2 bay leaves Chile Sauce 5 dried California chiles 6 dried Morita chiles (or chipotle peppers in sauce) 4 cloves garlic 1/3 cup oil 2 cups water, reserve 1 cup 1 teaspoon Mexican oregano 1 teaspoon cumin 1/3 teaspoon Mexican cinnamon 1/3 teaspoon ground clove 6-8 peppercorns 2 teaspoons beef bouillon powder Instructions 1. • For 2022 Everyone Should Be Resolved To Make Changes

For 2022 Everyone Should Be Resolved To Make Changes By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper December 30, 2021 Share “For 2022 everyone should be resolved to go and get a vaccine. You should stand up and talk about this issue. I have resolved that I will not be silent.” Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper This weekend marks 2022! Like many of you I was hoping not to be dealing with Covid. It seems it will still be around. I am calling out those that have still refused to get a vaccine. Sadly, recently an Emergency Operations Center call with all the mayors was held due to the current situation that shows infection rates up to 20% plus. Over 80 percent of those presenting to the hospital are due to individuals that still have not gotten a vaccine. I keep thinking to myself how could people be so challenged, so afraid, as to not simply go and get a simple vaccine shot? For over two centuries we have had vaccines. Children cannot attend school without having received vaccines that prevent life threatening diseases and more importantly the spread of diseases like Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chickenpox, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Influenza Type B, Hepatitis A and B and even now a shot to prevent certain cancers. Hospital workers for years have been required to have flu vaccines to go to work. But now even with a proven safe vaccine many are not getting the vaccine. Could you imagine having an elder parent in a nursing home knowing someone could give them Covid. It is unconceivable. My biggest complaint is this freedom argument. My father like many young men went to fight for freedom overseas in planes, on land and at sea. They made sacrifices not seeing their loved ones for years living day to day not knowing if it would be their last. Sadly, many died as heroes for the true freedom we have. Now that’s courage. That’s strength. That’s the real machismo we need now in this country. We have individuals that aren’t even patriotic enough to take a shot for our country. The vaccine is safe. While you may be young and healthy it still does not mean you cannot die from the complications of Covid. More importantly you are hurting those at high risk. I challenge these individuals. You are not patriots at all. For 2022 everyone should be resolved to go and get a vaccine. You should stand up and talk about this issue. I have resolved that I will not be silent. I will call those out that are hurting others by not helping to stop the spread of Covid, stifling our economy and hiding under the guise of freedom. Have we all really become a country of selfish cowards? Also is 2022 I want to congratulate our Team Hallandale Beach. Dr. Jeremy Earle under the leadership of a civil collegial commission has put together a game plan that will not only take us thru 2022 but has laid the groundwork for another 4 years. He has made significant hires across all departments who have proven to be hardworking, innovative, and committed to excellence. We certainly have many challenges to address in the coming year, but I am confident with us all remaining focused on the goal of financial stability and improvement of service within all areas of the city, we will continue to see results. As of January 2, all parking regulations will be fully enforced. The new parking program has been in effect but not fully enforced yet. With the increase in our traditional enforcement, we have seen revenues that will be able to pay for the parking program and create additional funds to pay for much needed vehicle replacements that were put off for years. Our new Director of Code Enforcement has geared up and is finally addressing cases that have been left idle for years. This will result in hopefully a much cleaner safer city. Property owners that have not been taking care of their liens have been put on notice. They need to address property deficiencies. Once addressed they can ask for fine mitigation. I must note there is not a free ride for absentee landlords or owners that have down work without permits. Owners will have to pay at least a portion by law for their neglect. Code enforcement takes staff time and city resources. Another great change has been taking place in our Police Department. Under the leadership of Acting Chief Michel many of our safety programs are being implemented and expanded. They have activated the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system. ShotSpotter is a gunshot detection service which alerts officers to gunshots within an expanded coverage area. The system alerts officers on their laptops and/or cellphones as well as over police radio through the BSO dispatch. ShotSpotter detects and accurately locates within 25 meters of the actual gunshot location 90% of unsuppressed, outdoor gunshots and alerts police in less than 60 seconds. The coverage area is approximately 2.18 miles and includes the I-95 to Federal Highway and from Pembroke Road to County line. This technology will increase our response time during life threatening incidents. I will cover our Police Department changes as well as discuss the critical support of our department in my first article of the new year. Please have a safe and blessed 2022! • Hallandale Beach Parking Program: Residents Are Still Concerned How It Will Impact Them

Hallandale Beach Parking Program: Residents Are Still Concerned How It Will Impact Them By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper November 4, 2021 Share I have received some questions about our parking program. It has been discussed many times over the years and was adopted by the commission. It started last month and will not be enforced by our parking enforcement team through the Police Department. There were requests to have residents that live on 3rd street be able to apply for an annual parking pass. This was not recommended by staff due to the fact this is a commercial area and many of the units already have two spots. I was not at the last meeting or I would have brought the issue up. The main issue is that we truly do not want residents storing their cars on the street. This may change but it will be up to the commission to do so. Below is an article I wrote on the topic. Please save the date, on Tuesday, November 16th 2021 at 12:00 p.m. via ZOOM, I will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting to discuss the 40 Year Inspections and to introduce our new Building Official Shellie Jackson. She will be reviewing our new permitting system and programs, for further info, check out my Facebook Page. Over the past year our City Commission had directed staff to develop a comprehensive citywide parking program. Over the past two months we have hired parking enforcement officers. We also have equipped them with electric vehicles. They have been going around the City and issuing tickets for both illegally parked or unpaid parked cars at our metered locations. This past meeting the Staff parking committee brought forward recommendations on a plan. It included analysis of existing on street parking throughout the City. They recommended two types of parking rates: premium and regular. The residual rates were not changed but on-street parking now will be charged and a monthly rate of $30 per month for residential. The main reasons for enforcement are threefold and public safety is paramount. We need to enforce no parking zones, blocked crosswalks and hydrants. We also need to enforce parking and storage of privately owned commercial vehicles. Maintenance also needs to be provided for on public spaces and roadways. Lastly reimbursement for planning, zoning and enforcement costs for the parking itself. Currently we have a standard parking rate of $1.00 per hour and a premium parking rate of $2.50. The residential beach parking is $300.00 per year of which only 3 permits have been issued. There are no overnight parking passes and sadly there has been limited enforcement. Other surrounding cities have parking programs with varying rates. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Pompano, Hollywood, Surfside and Dania Beach all have parking fees that range from $1.75 to $3.00 with residential passes available. During the season and on special events, the rates are a bit higher. Staff has developed two tiers of parking: premium nonresidential at a rate of $4.00 and a standard parking rate at $2.50. Residential rates will not change and remain at the standard rate of $1.00 and the $2.50 holiday rate. Holiday flat rate is $20.00. Premium parking was proposed for 4 locations: South Beach lot, North Beach lot, Diana Drive, The Fashion Art And Design District (FADD) on First avenue and on Northeast 3rd Street. During our meeting it was suggested that FADD be set as Standard until all of the construction on the new lot is completed and that the stores have had a chance to expand. Diana Drive will remain due to the fact that we have issues with commercial overnight parking generated by the surrounding hotels. Please note that there will be a residential pass which equates to $1.00 a day for $30.00. There will be five zones, Zone 1 is Diana Drive and Golden Isles Drive, Zone 2 is Three Islands Boulevard, Zone 3 is Atlantic Shores Boulevard and 14th Avenue, Zone 4 is around Peter Bluesten Park and Zone 5 is the Northwest around the new proposed Development on Dixie Highway and East of OB Johnson Park. It also needs to be noted that we are looking to expand parking on Three Islands Boulevard and Atlantic Shores Boulevard. When the Diplomat is reconstructed, there will be a public lot that I requested and was incorporated as part of the development agreement. I have already received two constituent questions on this proposal. The Parking Program was passed 4-0 by the City Commission and an ordinance will be coming forward. We know this is new and we are surely expecting push back. It is a change and I responded to the second question which was an email to explain in my opinion the logic in supporting this proposal. The resident was in general complaining about new taxes and comparing us to the States of California and New York. As I stated before we already had parking fees. What has changed is a new non-resident's fee. What is changing is where people are parking for free, where there will be parking charges and the added resident pass rate. I explained to the City governments that they must provide services to our constituents while balancing a budget under the restraints of the limited availability of resources. We are in the business of providing: Water, Wastewater, Stormwater, Police, Fire, EMS, Trash Removal, Parks, Maintaining Roadways, providing Code Enforcement, Building Services and an array of other services. Our choice to provide on-street parking and the ability for residents to utilize our City assets is a service that needs to be managed and the management of our assets costs money. We are trying to add parking spots. In addition, enforce parking where people are storing their work vehicles, recreational vehicles, simply parking their cars and renting out their own personal parking spots for revenue. Condominiums that were built years ago without parking spaces or with one parking space are not paying a thing to utilize city property. This is a reality in our community and to many others. Individuals living in condos know that they bought the condo with one parking spot. In my humble opinion, it is not fair that these residents are utilizing City property, but are not having to pay for its upkeep. One would argue that property taxes should be paying for everything and that we should not have fees. Also, when we charge fees, it makes it more difficult typically for those on tight budgets. The reality is that our costs just like every other business go up and we can only charge up to 8% percent millage by law. Millage rates are capped by the state. In addition, Save Our Homes and other exemptions that reduce the amount of taxes that are collected, however, this structure does not generate enough to pay for everything that we must provide. Please be assured that as a resident myself I am very sensitive to taxes and fees that we must pay within our community. Those combined taxes and fees for services run approximately 22%. That is low comparatively speaking to any other communities. We will continue to work on ways to balance our budget and utilize our City resources for the benefit of all individuals. While we are working to implement this new program, it should be noted that residential parking fees will be approximately $30 a day. I hope that this sheds some light on the rationale of the direction our City is going in. We are stewards of our City's assets. People in our City, State and Nation need to understand that the quality of life, the amenities and services cities provide around our country cost money. Therefore, so many people want to come to our country and enjoy living in our wonderful nation.
