Hollywood Beach Renourishment Project Update January 11, 2024 Share Now that Turtle Nesting Season is over, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer contractor has resumed work in Broward County. Having just completed work in Hallandale Beach, they have begun work at the south end of Hollywood Beach. They will continue using their staging area in Hallandale Beach to place sand in Hollywood until they reach the Diplomat Beach Resort. Then they’ll shift to the staging area at Keating Park. Sand will be placed from the southern boundary of Hollywood to Iris Terrace. Sand placement will continue from Scott Street to Balboa Street in the north. The schedule intends to have all work completed by April 30th, 2024. Project Details Segment III of the Broward County Shore Protection Project continues through April 2024. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) awarded the Segment III Beach Renourishment Construction Contract to Continental Heavy Civil Corporation. The project area is along the shorelines of Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, Dania, Hollywood, and Hallandale Beaches. This project is expected to place approximately 887,000 cubic yards of Upland Sand along the shoreline, with a 100% cost share by the Federal Government. Where feasible, Shore Protective Dunes may be placed to complement this project. Construction will only occur on Upland Beaches where Property Owners have granted Construction Easement and, where Construction Easement has not been granted, Sand will only be placed below the Erosion Control Line, which defines the boundary between State Sovereign Submerged Lands and Upland Ownership. Beach Construction Access and/or Staging will be at the discretionary needs of the Construction Vendor. Hollywood Schedule: Beach Renourishment began in Hollywood's South Beach in December and construction is expected to be completed by April 30th, 2024. Staging And Beach Access: Keating Park And Meade Street The goal of Engineered Shore Projects is to reduce Risk and promote resilience in coastal communities. Shore Projects help to reduce the damages - Economic, Environmental, Infrastructure, Human Health and Safety of Tropical Storms and Hurricanes. Thousands of residents and businesses in Broward County will benefit from this Shore Project because Storm Events Erode the Beach rather than damaging or destroying Coastal Infrastructure. Beach Nourishment Projects also have inherent benefits in restoring Critical Habitat for Shorebird and Marine Turtle Nesting. The construction is estimated to cost $7,864,770 and is fully funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Under the Prior Law, this Recertification was done after 40 years. Once Recertification takes place, buildings will undergo Recertification every 10 years. Recertification requires that the building undergo Structural and Electrical Inspections and make any necessary Repairs. Condominiums will now be required to undergo a Reserve Study to determine their needs every ten years and Fully Fund Reserves for Structural Integrity. Associations have until 2025 to achieve Fully Funded Reserves. This Requirement only applies to Structural Reserves. Funds for things such as upgrading the appearance of Common Areas or Replacing Furniture or Equipment remain at the discretion of each Association. Last year, The City of Aventura Adopted the First Legislation in Florida which requires all of its buildings to submit any Engineering Reports it receives to the City. The Show Must Go On…As Well As a Mask: Face Coverings and a Recent Negative COVID-19 Test Policy To Be Implemented September 16, 2021 Share For entry to performances, all guests 12 years of age and older are asked to provide documentation of a recent negative COVID-19 PCR test result conducted within 72 hours prior to the performance Among the first to close when the pandemic began, The Broward Center for the Performing Arts has announced new health and safety protocols that will enable it to welcome back artists, audiences, staff and volunteers to all of the stages at the Broward Center and The Parker. Mandatory face coverings for performances and guest documentation showing a recent negative COVID-19 test will be required for all patrons attending ticketed performances. As an alternative to a negative test result, patrons are given the option to provide documentation showing full vaccination status. The policy will be implemented beginning Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021 with a 2021/2022 Season opening concert at The Parker by Firefall, Pure Prairie League and Orleans. The policy applies to all ticketed events including those presented by the Broward Center and its partners in the arts including Bank of America Broadway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida Grand Opera, Gold Coast Jazz, Miami City Ballet, Slow Burn Theatre Company and Symphony of the Americas. “Since the pandemic closed concert halls around the world, we have been working with other industry leaders who share a deep commitment to public, guest and staff safety on a path forward to raising the curtain again,” said Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley. “The return of live performing arts depends on artist and audience confidence. Many artists are now requesting these types of safety protocols, and our new policy is quickly becoming the industry standard and similar to those being implemented by Broadway theaters, major concert promoters and venues around the nation.” The Broward Center is following health and safety guidelines developed in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic that have been informed by guidance of public health officials including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition to the guest entry policy, vaccinations are required for staff, volunteers and crew working performances. Any guest two years of age or older is required to wear a suitable face covering that covers the nose, mouth and chin (rather than gaiters, shields or respirator masks) while inside the venues. For entry to performances, all guests 12 years of age and older are asked to provide documentation of a recent negative COVID-19 PCR test result conducted within 72 hours prior to the performance, or a negative COVID-19 Antigen test result conducted within 24 hours prior to the performance start time. The test result can be printed or digital (including an email or text message from the test provider displayed on a phone or electronic device), but must clearly reflect the name of the guest, the date of the test, the type of test performed and the negative test result. As an alternative, fully vaccinated guests have the option of presenting documentation of full vaccination with the final dose at least 14 days prior to the performance date. Acceptable documentation may be the original vaccination card, a printed copy of the vaccination card or a digital copy of such card. As part of the new policy, staff will check for matching photo identification. The venues will not duplicate nor retain any of the documentation provided by guests. It is the responsibility of the ticket purchaser to communicate these policies to all those who will be using the tickets. Performance ticket holders who do not comply with these policies may be required to leave the theater without refund. Specific health & safety guidelines, which will continue to evolve as the environment changes, are available at BrowardCenter.org/safety and will be communicated to ticket holders in advance of performances. Refunds are available for anyone who submits confirmation of a positive test result in the ten-day period prior to the performance. To celebrate his life and legacy, Dave's sons Chris and Dan Brubeck, who performed and recorded with their father beginning in the 1970s, curated a multimedia show with their own Brubeck Brothers Quartet. With Dan and Chris as the foundation, Guitarist Mike DeMicco and Pianist Chuck Lamb complete this dynamic quartet. Through stories told by his sons and music performed by the quartet, the show invites audiences to travel along the timeline of Dave’s extraordinary life and career. Chris and Dan Brubeck have been making music together practically all their lives. Drummer Dan and Bassist, Trombonist and Composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966. They’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of groups, performing at concert series, colleges and Jazz Festivals across North America and Europe, including the Newport, Detroit, Montreal, Playboy/Hollywood Bowl and Monterey Jazz Festivals. The quartet's most recent Album, 2018’s TimeLine, celebrated Dave Brubeck's famous 1958 State Department tour. ZOA Settles Antisemitism Lawsuit Against Cherry Hill Public Schools Jewish Connection News Feb 12, 2026 After Months Of Litigation, The Zionist Organization Of America (ZOA) Successfully Resolved Its Federal Lawsuit Against Cherry Hill Public Schools In New Jersey. In partnership with attorneys Jeffrey Schreiber and Stephen Meister of the Law Firm of Meister Seelig & Fein, PLLC, the ZOA filed suit on behalf of a Jewish student at Cherry Hill High School East and his parents after the student – a proud and vocal Israel supporter – was repeatedly threatened and nearly physically assaulted by other students after he documented on Social Media the provocative, dangerous, pro-terrorist Hamas conduct of fellow students. Just days after Hamas massacred over 1,200 Jews on October 7th, 2023, a group of Cherry Hill students walked through the halls of the high school enthusiastically waving Palestinian Arab flags, wearing keffiyehs, and shouting, “Free Palestine.” The complaint alleged that school and district officials not only failed to protect the Jewish student from the repeated threats he received and reported. They also retaliated against him – the victim – and harshly, undeservedly and outrageously punished him in violation of their own rules and policies, while ignoring and downplaying the conduct of his attackers. Under the settlement negotiated by the ZOA and its partners, the school district was required to (1) expunge the information and evidence related to the disciplinary action taken against the Jewish student; (2) continue to provide antisemitism education as part of its mandatory Holocaust instruction; (3) commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 24th, 2025, and commemorate it annually thereafter; and (4) during the week of April 21st, 2025, maintain a table of books in the district’s libraries that commemorated Jewish history and survival through the centuries. The settlement also required the school district to issue and post on its website a detailed statement providing data about the “skyrocketing” rise in antisemitic incidents in New Jersey and affirming that the district would “not tolerate antisemitism in any form.” The statement promised that all perpetrators of antisemitism, both staff and students, would be held accountable by the district. In addition, the statement emphasized that understanding how antisemitism can be expressed “is critical for effectively addressing” the problem and provided much-needed information to the community about the many forms of antisemitism: Included in the district’s statement was a definition of antisemitism almost identical to the widely accepted International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition, including the examples related to Israel. ZOA National President Morton A. Klein and the Director of ZOA’s Center for Law and Justice, Susan B. Tuchman, Esq., expressed their satisfaction with the terms of the settlement, stating, “We are pleased and gratified that we were able to achieve the result our clients were seeking and that justice was served. The school district took much-needed corrective steps. It also educated its community about the many forms of antisemitism and made it clear to the community that the district would have zero tolerance for all of it.
